Welcome to the Know the Difference Minute for Thursday, February 9th.
At the end of last year, there were 231 million Netflix subscribers worldwide. At last estimate, there are 100 million subscribers sharing their login information.
For a long time, Netflix didn’t care. Until it hit the bottom line significantly. But putting the password genie back in the bottle isn’t easy. But it’s coming.
Netflix performed a test in 8 countries last year, mostly in Central and South America. When evidence of password sharing was found, a note went out with an invitation to add a paying second account. Next up is Canada, New Zealand, Portugal and Spain.
All other streamers will be watching. If there’s huge backlash against Netflix, they’ll steer clear. If it works, don’t be surprised to see others do the same thing. It’s dog-eat-dog world for streamers where every legitimate account is real revenue—while freeloaders aren’t.
