Full show transcript:

So I just uh got dragged as uh it was explained to me for just talking normal. I know I stood up for you. I appreciate that. I am being bullied a little bit by your friends uh for the way that I speak. And I think I talk real.

You talk good. Yeah. Uh so it's a little frustrating because it's just you know, it's one of those things where I go like this is just me. This is just how I talk.

I'm just shooting off the cuff. And apparently that annoys people sometimes. Like when I say things like accessories. Like, oh, look, I have a camera and all of these accessories. And they go, you're saying that wrong. It's accessories, which feels so weird to say. Like, acty.

No. Accessory. Accessory. It doesn't feel weird to me.

It feels weird to me because my accessories.

And all of my accessories. It feels weird. Look at my camera and all of its accessories. I don't like that. It should be accessories. Look at my accessories.

Accessories would be S though. Accessory is ACC. If you were saying accessories, it would be ASS.

No, that's a bad word.

Because if you're if you're if you're spelling a CSS, it's A S S E S S. Yeah.

But if you're selling access, yeah, yeah. No, I'm AC.

Following along, I'm just saying. The word has always been in my vernacular has been accessories. Look at my drawer of accessories.

It's never been. Look at my drawer of accessories.

Well, why are you saying

it's not a good thing? Because it feels weird. It feels weird to say it. Accessories. It's clunky. It feels weird. I don't like it. I don't look, I got a bunch of accessories for my truck. It doesn't feel natural. Okay. I'm just saying. I'm not sure.

They feel a little bit heated. Well, you know, challenge my whole life. I've said accessories, and then you're like, that's the wrong thing. And now I'm like, well, too bad. You're not gonna change. It's gonna be that's a difficult one for me to try to wrap my head around. Yeah, it's been accessories forever. Okay. But apparently, I'm an idiot.

No, no one ever said that.

Feels like I've been dragged.

He said it might be a colloquialism. Colloquialism? Yeah. It's not.

It's just a it's a Josh word. It's my decision that I have made actively for my whole life.

Then just keep it. Who cares?

Apparently, someone.

Okay, well then do it just to annoy him. Oh, it's fine.

I'll fix it. I'll fix myself to make everyone more comfortable. It's fine. I'll say the words correctly so that everyone can feel good. It's fine. It's just, you know, you learn things about yourself after 44 years, and somebody's like, you know, you've been saying that wrong since you were like since you could talk. Okay. We know better and we do better. I'll try. I'll try to be an accessory guy. It'll be okay. It feels weird. It's gonna be just fine. Okay.

What else do I say wrong? Uh I'll let you know when you do it. Yeah, well, I'm sure I'll hear. You want to start today's shoot. shoe? Let's begin. Oh. Show. Stop. Hi. Oh, hello. How's it going? Hello.

Hello. Oh, hello. Hello.

You haven't done the barbershop quartet in a while.

I haven't. Did you miss it?

I don't know if I missed it, but it's uh, you know, I don't hate that it showed up. I just wasn't prepared. You know. I don't think you never are.

I don't think you I don't think you're ever like, you know, I think I'm ready for the barbershop quartet to be here. It just is a thing that happens, and you go, well, that was a thing. Yep. Yeah. Yep. Well, hi. Hi. You're just gonna repeat what I said.

Well, I don't know what else you want me to say. Well, what else you got going on? Uh it's Friday. Facts. And as the cure once said, it's Friday, I'm in love. Oh. Uh that's nice.

That's a that's a fine reference. Thank you. Yeah. Thank you. Um, what is happening today? Nothing. Just a regular old file.

We're going to the popcorn shop.

Yes. That's happening later on. So 4 30, you and me, we got a date at the popcorn shop.

in Pocatello Yeah, baby.

Which by the way, if you have not signed up, if you're listening early and you have not signed up yet to win yourself the summer family fun pack. Family summer fun pack. You got it.

One or the other. You have until today. Like we're gonna go draw the winner at 4 30 this afternoon. So uh go sign up for that if you haven't yet. Um that's a good thing we got going on today. That is a good thing. Uh and then this is the last show for many, many days.

Live. It's also the last show of July.

This is the last show of July. Yeah.

Holy, we just had the Fourth of July. Right.

Well, tomorrow will be the first of August. That's insane. That is crazy. When are you gonna put out fall decor? No way, dude. I know. That's a September question. That's an October question. Okay. Just the first day of fall is officially in September.

I understand that, but I'm still it's still warm weather. I don't put stuff that stuff out till October. Don't rush me.

I am in no way rushing.

No, but the stores are rushing me. Okay.

Well, don't take that out on me. I was asking a question. Well, step back. I'm I'm so far step back. No. You can't even barely see me. You better change those subject. Now I'm all right. Oh. Do you want me to change your name to that all day? It's Josh and I rate.

No. Because I'll get over it. Just step back. Okay. Let's see. What else? I don't know what else. That's it. That's how you know. Oh, you said this is going to be the last show for a couple of days.

For quite a few days. You packed your bag. You're heading on out. Uh yeah. I'm working on I leave Sunday. Everything's kind of coming together. Uh, and then I won't be back until a week from today. And then we'll be back in the studio with a brand new show on August 10th. Correct. So when when we leave today, we won't see you for like 10 days.

But we'll be back. That's right.

That is that is true. We will be back on the 10th with a new show. Uh so anyway, thanks for hanging out today. Uh happy Friday. Let's get things going. Let's go. I got good news coming up here in a couple minutes. So hang tight. Here we go.

This is this is pretty fun. Uh, an 11-year-old girl who was battling leukemia, turned her hospital room window into a menu, and local restaurants answered the call in a big way. Here's what she did. Her name's Emily Wilkins. She's currently being treated at Cincinnati Children's Hospital. She made handmade posters and then taped them to her window asking for stuff like pizza, donuts, stuff like that. Uh and once photos of her signs hit social media, uh, local hotspots like Snappy Tomato Pizza, Abbey Girl Sweets, Bourbon House Pizza, they all rushed to deliver fresh pizza cupcakes and encouragement directly to her floor. They're like, we gotta get pizza up there. The children's hospital sign says we need pizza.

Let's go. Uh, which is really cool. Uh so some of the deliveries caught Emily completely by surprise. Uh, when asked how it felt knowing Complete Strangers had seen her signs and wanted to help, she said, Well, it makes you feel good. Uh and can you tell everybody thanks?

Which is really nice. So she's 11. She needed some pizza and some sweets. She put it up in the window and it happened. And they delivered. Yep. That's awesome. Well, I think that's pretty fun. So way to go, Emily.

And I love that the city responded. I love that people responded. Yeah. Like, we got to get this taken care of.

Then her signs are cool. It says Emily, 11-year-old. I need pizza and donuts. And then she put her Venmo up there as well. Um, and then the sign next to us says leukemia pick the wrong cowgirl.

No. Which I think is a really good sign, too. Um, but yeah, no, when they showed up with the pizza and the cupcakes and stuff, they didn't show up with like, here's a pizza. Yeah. Which they didn't. A lot of stuff they dropped off for the entire uh hospital, which is pretty cool. That's awesome. Good job, Emily. That's good news.

If you've been around here for a hot minute, you would know that I have made friends with the wasps in our backyard. Tell that to the wasps.

Yeah. I don't think they got the memo.

I don't think they did either. And that makes me really upset because every day I would go and I would talk to the wasps. Yep. And I would say, listen, guys, I've killed some of your friends before, but I'm gonna leave you there. You're in my wood pile. Right. I'm gonna leave you here. I know that you do good work most of the time. Yeah. You kill the bugs, the aphids.

Well, and they'll eat a lot of like the weird caterpillars, and like they are they are a bit of a pest control. And we normally have quite a few uh colonies of wasps in the backyard that I'm battling all summer. Uh, but this year, because we had that weird 20 degree day, it froze a lot of things and killed off a bunch of them. Uh, but this one little at the time, very small colony of like four. We said, let's we'll let them chill.

We did a campfire uh in the fire pit in the backyard, and uh when I pulled some wood, it exposed their nest, and they were like, oh no. And they've been doing fine. We've just been leaving them alone, they've had their thing.

Yeah, and I know that they imprint your face, and so they know what you look like.

Wasps do that or bees.

I can't remember. I thought it was wasps.

I'm just I don't know enough about it.

Made a point to go and talk to them every day, and it would say, hey buds, like you're doing good, doing good stuff. Uh eat the bugs, but like I won't bug you if you won't bug me. And then I would end the conversation with have a blessed day. And they would look at me every time I would go to the nest.

Like they would kind of put their wings up a little bit, like attack mode, but I'd be like, hey, chill, chill, chill. Right. I'm just here.

White flag. Like, chill out. So I went to do that yesterday. I considered them my friends. So I went to do that yesterday. Said, hey buds, what's going on? Yeah. And they stung me. Well, the one did. Yeah.

Right in the right in the cheek. Right in the eye. I'm over trying to move around, and I'll tell you my own pains here in a minute. I'm trying to to move my uh squash vines and stuff, so they'll trellis. Yeah.

And so I've got a handful of of vines, and now because I dropped everything and rushed over to make sure you were okay. That didn't happen. Yes, it did. I was behind a fence. It took a minute to get over there.

I dropped everything and moved over towards you. But as I did that, my my fingers are full of uh on those vines, they're very pokey. Uh huh. Uh, the the squash and pumpkin vines. And uh, so I got all these little itches. It feels like I have um fiberglass in my fingers from a little squash spikes. So, yeah.

So uh anyway, I've got my own little troubles I'm dealing with, just in case you wanted to know. But I I ran over and I looked and and uh and it wasn't swelling up, which I was like, that's great news. You're not gonna have a puffy closed half your face.

Except I kind of wish that it had. You wanted half puffy face? Because at least that would look cool. You'd look like you got stung. I know. But then I'd have a really cool story.

You made a noise. I didn't care for the pain noise that you made. What did I make? It Like I it was very scary. I wasn't super excited about that.

Unexpected and it hurt. Yeah. And I was betrayed.

Well, and I was worried that there would be like a pheromone release and then they would swarm or something. I was I was super concerned about like we've we have to escape the backyard. Well, I did later. Yeah, because then you got cranky and you were like, I'm gonna go tell them who's boss, and you went over with what was in your hand? Pair of scissors, a pair of scissors, and you smack the board they're on. You didn't even do anything to them, and then they all flew up and you were running away. And I went, what are you doing?

My middle name is Danger. Reckless.

Uh apparently in everyday encounters, regular wasps do not recognize or single out individual human faces in order to hold a grudge. If a wasp acts aggressively towards you, it is reacting to sudden movements, vibrations, or closeness to a nest rather than remembering who you are. Okay. You got too close. I did get with your face.

I mean, that's fair. Because I said hi to them and then I bent down. Yeah. And I pulled a weed.

And they thought you were coming down there to eat them. Yeah. And so the one said, Enough's enough.

I know. It's my fault. I get it. But I am mad at you. Wasps. Yeah. I just don't think I can let you live there anymore.

So we were nice, and now you blew it.

The whole colony's got to go because of the actions of one. It's just the way it is.

What else? What other I What other options are there? Yeah. I got nothing. I can't let him stay there after they expect.

We need to figure out which which one it was, and we need to the he needs to serve time. Yeah, he needs in a little wasp jail. Yeah. You know?

Yep. Which one was it?

You tell me you remember their faces. I ran away.

I said, ow, ow, ow, ow.

Yeah, you did. Like a like a dog squelching. I mean, it was like comparable. It was a comparable reaction. You didn't sound like a dog. Not saying you're a dog.

Thanks, dear. I'm saying you yelped. Yeah. That's what I'm saying. No, I absolutely did. And it was scary. Sorry.

And I'm glad you're okay and that you didn't puff up half your face. I'm sorry about your fingers. They hurt. Like, I'll be okay.

So there's kind of this unspoken thing about um. Well, I guess it's it's not unspoken because we have talked about it before. Let me explain. I'm so good at talking on the radio. Okay.

You're you're doing fine. You're doing great. It's been four years. You're new. What are you trying to say?

Okay, there was a song when Emery was little, and the song is Wildflower by Tom Petty. Yeah. And for some reason it just reminded me of our daughter when she was little. She was a little bit. She would be in like a beautiful princess dress with crazy wild hair, digging in the dirt, catching bugs. And she just reminded me so much of a wildflower.

Correct. That song just spoke to me and reminded me so much of her. And so ever since then, that's been her song. And I there's this unspoken thing that that will be when she gets married if she chooses to have a daddy daughter dance. Right. That will be the song that you guys dance too. I have not asked either one of you.

No, I'm just I'm glad you're planning it. I'm sure she appreciates that. But anyway, go on.

Okay, so then I often think about songs that remind me of Beck. And there used to be a song that I used to sing to him when he was little, and it's a Lia Lovett song called If If You Needed Me. And so then I was like, well, that could be like a mother-son dance for when he gets married.

But then the other day we were driving in the car, and we heard this we heard this song that reminded us there was a video game years and years and years ago called Just Dance. That is correct. And it was with the connect on the Xbox. It was on the Wii. It was on the we and you would just like repeat the moves from the people that were dancing, and there was a song. Ra rah rahute did.

Yes. And Beck was little and just loved dancing to that video game song. Like we couldn't get him to stop. And that would be the only one he would dance to, but he would turn that one on, and he just loved it so much. So then that reminded me when we heard it the other day, I was like, Beck, this is it. This is the song. Like this is the song that we have to dance to at your wedding. And he immediately said no. Yes. Yeah. I found it. Of course you did.

It's the whole video, so you could dance along if you want.

I told him, I said, we gotta dance to this at your wedding, and he refused. Yeah. He said, No. Yeah.

I think he would say no just to dancing in general. He doesn't want any dancing. He's like, nah, there will be no dancing dance.

I know. I'm positive of it. I gotta convince him to do that somehow, some way.

Because if you could get him to do the Rasputant dance. Come on. I mean, you know.

I would do it with him in a minute.

I know you would. You would choreograph it. You would get out the we and practice it. Yes. So you could do the entire uh four-minute song or whatever it is here. Yeah. Okay. Again, I'm sure he he is in the same boat uh as our daughter, and that they both just love that you're planning it.

No, just one little section of their wedding that we have to do. Neither one of them are in any mode to get married. This is years and years and years and years and years down the road. I'm just saying out loud, saying it out loud, putting it in the universe to be like, everyone help me remember.

Because I will forget. I don't think you will. I think this one's pretty locked in. These are built around core memories. You're not gonna forget. Okay, you're right.

Oh man, Beck, how am I gonna get you to dance with that at your wedding? Rah. You Yeah, see? bought You bought a couple of new shirts recently, and one of them was a button up short sleeve button up that has uh what's on it? Like the brown one. So like the the coyotes.

No, there's no coyotes. No. I got two new shirts. Uh one is a dark blue and it has flamingos all over it. Yes. And then uh, which is a fun little shirt. Uh, because they're bright pink. And then uh the other one uh is like a kind of a burnt sienna.

If I had to pick a color, uh it'd be a burnt sienna. And then it has like uh like not mountains, they're more um it's more of a desert. So they're more plateaus. Yeah. It's kind of got some plateaus on it.

I thought there was cactuses on it.

It might have cactus, but it doesn't have coyote.

That's what I meant. Coyote. Uh hold up, please. Because you have a picture of me wearing it. I do. I'm gonna prove you once and for all.

There's no coyotes on it, so you're gonna prove nothing. It's got plateaus and maybe some little green cactus.

When you bought this shirt. Yes. Your daughter said to you. Oh, I bet are you gonna wear that, or is that gonna sit and rot in your closet like the hot dog shirt I got you?

Well, I've already worn it twice. Now maybe three times. Okay, they're horses. Horses. It has horses on it. It's like a desert. Like they're little desert landscape things. But it has horses? I guess I didn't realize.

Yeah, there's a dude, there's a cowboy even on the horse. Really? Yeah, you can see. Oh, yeah. Look at that.

He's standing near the plateau.

So Emery bought you for Father's Day a couple of years ago.

She bought you a this is like three or four years ago. She bought you a button-up shirt. Let's let's tell the whole story. Okay. Because the whole story was they said we want to go get some stuff. And uh, and so you you were like, okay, cool, like go get some treats or whatever, and we'll put out a little thing on the table, and then when he wakes up in the morning, you'll have some little gifts or whatever. While they were there getting treats, which was a giant bag of peanuts and a couple of other things. It was the biggest bag of peanuts ever. You like peanuts.

I do. They were in shell, giant big bag of peanuts and some other stuff. Uh there was also a shirt they stumbled across that was like on the clearance rack, and it's uh it's a kind of a heavier knit material. It's not like a lightweight button-up. Uh, and it's covered. I mean, every half inch is a small little hot dog. It's a lot of hot dogs. And I'm not like huge on hot dogs anyway.

So I was but you're big on flamingos and desert scenes.

You know how I am. And so anyway, so I turned that into my Fourth of July shirt. And I said, I will wear this. I'll wear it for barbecue season.

I'll wear it around Fourth of July. And so it comes out once a year, and it's uh it's the hot dog shirt. But I get to hear about that shirt every single day. Oh, you're wearing your hot dog shirt today? The other day, I was like, man, I I can't figure out what to wear, and she disappeared and then came up from the it's stored in my studio downstairs, and she comes up with it in her hand and was like, here's an option. And I was like, are you serious right now? What is happening? I don't know. It's not hot dog shirt day.

So she has really been so offended. I think she was really excited that she had found it because she thought it was funny. It is funny. Has been very offended that you don't share the same thing.

same excitement. Oh, it's now a very, very big bit. It's it's a huge bit in the house to talk about me not wearing the hot dog shirt or me saying that the hot dog shirt only comes out once a year and bringing it up as like, oh, I gotta I don't know what I'm gonna wear to this thing. How about the hot dog shirt? So you know, it's head to toe hot dogs. It's so funny. Or I guess shoulder to torso and waistline hot dogs.

And why don't you wear it just because it's heavy? It's heavy fabric.

It is a heavy fabric and it's sweaty. And also it's covered in hot dogs.

Yeah, but why is that stopping you? You have one that's covered in skulls with flowers coming out of its head, but you'll wear that. Yeah.

I have one covered in lightning bolts. I have a lot of different shirts.

Yeah. I don't, I just don't understand your thought.

I like to keep that one for special occasions. Like the Fourth of July. America's birthday. Wear a hot dog shirt.

But you don't wear it on the Fourth of July because you have to wear a work shirt. That's right. So you don't even wear it on the Fourth of July.

I wear it around the Fourth of July. It comes out Fourth of July weekend. That is my Fourth of July adjacent hot dog shirt. Got it. Yeah. It makes sense. You know?

It's rotting in the closet, apparently.

Well, that's what she thinks is gonna happen with these other shirts, but I've already I haven't I've only worn the flamingo one one time. But I I've worn the uh the desert the desert the desert landscape one two or three times. Yeah, you like that one. It's nice. That's a good I like the color. I have a pair of shorts that match. I should wear them together. It looked like a full body suit.

I'm surprised you haven't worn them together. You like to do that. What are you trying to say? Here's my olive shirt with my olive shorts. That's right. Here's my green shirt with my green shorts. And what's the problem? Head to toe one color. What's the problem? Nothing. You do you, boo. And you usually do.

That's right. That is right. I know fashion. Now earlier you said if you've been around the show long enough, you know this or that. And I think uh right here is an example of if you've been around the show long enough, you know that there's a fun little game that I apparently like to play where I try to get Chantel to make noises or uh do impressions of people. Uh because I think it's very, very funny.

I think it's I think it's uh one of the funniest things ever. And so for my own selfish enjoyment, I will uh I'll uh try to get you to do impressions. Now, years and years and years ago, got you to do uh a line, a bunch of lines from Dirty Harry. Which is which was so good. It's my uh because if you're lucky well you gotta ask yourself one question.

It was so funny. do you think lucky Well you punk punk. It was so funny. Uh and uh and I still have that audio somewhere, and I dig it up occasionally, and I go like, oh, this is the this is the greatest thing ever.

There's a piece of audio that you've also kept. This is from really early when I first started on the radio, and I asked you what your best witch cackle was.

Josh It was it wasn't a witch cackle as much as it was a uh an evil laugh, is what it was. Josh, I shouldn't have brought that up. Why?

It's it's so embarrassing. It is uh yeah, just play it and get over with because I know you're gonna just go top.

It's a crazy piece of audio. it's a scary Woody Woodpecker, is what it is. And it's and it works, it just works. So anyway, I have that saved forever.

Yeah, I know you do.

You bring it up every now and then. And it's awesome. It's a scary laugh. If I heard that in the darks of the night, I know you would run away.

It would be scary. I know.

I was in a tunnel somewhere, and that echoed through. I would not feel okay. Exactly. So uh anyway, yesterday. You I don't know if you were reading something, something came up, and you uh you said a name.

I was watching a video, and the person's name was Sarah. And so then I said, Sarah. Right.

And I said, what was that? And you said it's Ludo from Labyrinth. And I went, okay, but do the other line.

Smell bad.

And then I was like, this is the best impression you have. This is the top rung. It's really good.

It's not like it's hard though. Anyone can do it.

It doesn't matter. You did it, and it's very good. And so I'm really excited. Uh, that Ludo is your uh number one top impression of all the people, characters in the whole existence of time and space. Ludo's your number one. What about Charlie Chaplin? Does he say much?

No, but I can maybe that's fine.

That doesn't work on the radio. Fair. All right, go ahead and do it. Yep, there it is.

I don't even have all of my supplies.

I don't have to.

I don't have a cane. I don't have I got nothing. I can't do Charlie Chaplin without props. Yeah. And it's also inaudible. So one of my favorite parts though is just like that's my big party trick to be like, oh, I can do a Charlie Chaplin.

Well, but now you you really can do a Ludo.

Yeah, but he he has that one line. That's all he ever says. He says, smooth, bud. And then they say, goodbye, Sarah.

I know he has more lines too.

He doesn't. I looked him up.

That's it. He always says two things the whole movie. He says, Ludo friend. Yes.

So good. Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh. What? When our dog grows her hair out, she looks like Sir Didymus. Yes. So I have to go as Ludo for Halloween. And we'll see.

Do you think she's gonna look like Sir Dididymus by October? Yeah. Uh yeah. She will. We'll have to put a little saddle on there.

Oh no. Like a Like a coat. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I had a different idea for Halloween, but it's gotta be.

I guess Sir Didymus rode like a sheepdog thing. Yeah. So we'll have to get how's she gonna pull that off? I don't know.

I'll figure it out. Don't even don't even worry about it. Can I go as the blue worm? Yeah. No, look at me. Oh. Not that way. Yeah. Oh, that's funny.

Anyway, uh, I'm super excited you tapped into your Ludo. It's it's really good. I got two impressions. I could go as the uh the trash heap lady. Oh, yeah, you could. You love your dolly, don't you? All that stuff. You know? That's great.

Well, you could go as Toby, the

baby the baby in the striped pajamas, or I could go as the goblin king.

Come on. You already have those payons.

No, I do not. But I will soon.

Okay, we have some friends who used to live here and they would listen to our show. And then they moved away to Boise. That's right. And they don't listen anymore.

But they could because they could. One, uh, they can't listen on their radio because they're too far away, but they could listen on the app. Yeah. They could, you know, if they wanted to, if they really were good friends. Exactly. And they could also listen to the podcast on demand after the fact. If they were good friends. We're good friends.

I mean, geez always. First of all, if you were good friends, you wouldn't have moved anyway.

Well, there's that. Yeah. Okay. Jobs. What? Come on. What? You got a you got new jobs? Whatever, dude. Whatever, dude.

So we posted a video yesterday. Yeah. On our social media pages of you having a fit that the cart was disorganized. It's horrible. So we got we got a text.

You put jugs of water on top. What is wrong with you?

So she said, we get a text from our friend. Do you normally organize your cart? And if so, what happened? And I said, Josh normally organizes the cart. I don't care about it. And so sometimes I throw things in extra haphazardly just to annoy him. And I said, it works. She said. Every time. I love how you both switch pushing each other's buttons. Yeah, well.

It builds up the strength of our relationship to just know that you're living life on an edge.

But it is true. You push my buttons. Yeah. And I know here's the dumbest part is I know you're pushing my buttons, and I still go. No, you don't. I'm gonna let this one get to me. You don't know. I absolutely do. After 23 years, you don't think I know? When do you know?

Oh, you about fell into my trap.

You about fell into my trap. It was a slippery slope. You caught yourself.

I know when you're doing it. Oh, do you? You almost didn't.

See? Life on the edge. You Never know.

My middle name is Danger. No, it's not. It is.

It's reckless. We discussed this. Danger.

No. When I smacked that board.

Yeah, with the bees on it. And then I ran away screaming. I said, middle name danger. Yeah. I was already in the garage. Yeah, you. Because I was you did this to yourself. Like if they're swarming, I'm gone. And then you ran past the garage to the closed gate where they would never catch you.

I didn't want them to follow me inside the house. Be faster. I don't know how. Middle name slowpoke. Yeah, that's true. Right.

So uh so yeah. I mean, that is a common theme through our relationship is pushing. Taking turns, pushing each other's buttons. Yeah. Yeah, but but understanding that it's in good fun.

It's not vindictive or or revenge or anything like that. Like we're just having a good time. We're just a couple of goofs having a good. We're having a good time.

One of us is having a good time, depending on who the button pusher is having a good time.

Well, and yesterday, uh, while we were at the store, I pulled off the bit of driving Emory into a corner with the cart, and she really is getting tired of that bit. She is and she was already like in need of a snack. And which is never a good time.

Listen, if you have a 16-year-old daughter, don't go trying to be funny when she's hungry. No, you gotta check it out. It's a pile of anger that comes towards you until you fix it. And it's mean. It is. It is mean. And so uh yeah, I I like to sort of herd her with the cart.

It makes me laugh. Uh, but now she just goes, bro. Bro. Like, don't do it, bro.

And I go, eh, I'm gonna do it. Because I'm mean. And I get bored teasing you all the time. So I needed someone else to tease. Sometimes you both gang up on me. Yeah. Yeah.

Like you don't all gang up on me. Like it's just this is a trade-off. This is a constant. It is on the edge.

And if you aren't living on the edge or you living at all. I mean, Arosmith said. Right.

Living on the edge. All right. Well, it is cute how we switch off, isn't it? Isn't it? Yeah. Isn't it? I'm gonna push this button.

Go for it. I'm just scrolling away, and I saw this video uh a few minutes ago of this couple. Uh he the guy had just come in to uh grab a drink, or maybe was done with his lawn work and he's all sweaty, and his his wife uh had started giving him gold stars for things. So she had his name's Matt, and she had a post-it note hung on the side of the fridge that said Matt, and it had three gold stars on. And he's like, What is this? What is this about? He's like, I saw this the other day, but I didn't know what it was about, but now it's got more stars on it. And she said, Well, you just mowed the grass and uh did the dishes and did the dishes, so you get two more stars. And he's like, I get stars for mowing the grass. And she's like, Sure, yeah, why not? And uh, and then uh he's like, Well, what else can I get stars for? And she's like, I don't know. I just get to decide when to give them out. And he is like lit up about earning gold stars.

Yeah, he's like, How many, how many do I get? Right.

He's like, I was real sweaty. Do I get two stars for that? She's like, No.

And she's like, I took some away yesterday.

Yeah, because he went golfing. And and he's like, I lose stars when I golf. And she says, Well, sometimes, which means he went golfing when he was supposed to be doing something else. Yep. And so he lost a gold star.

So listen, this is a the most passive aggressive troll ever. Because he's so excited about these stars. He's like, When I do I have a goal, like, do I get a prize when I get so many? And she's like, I don't know, what do you want your goal to be? Like, she doesn't care. She's just doing it to like make herself have a laugh at his expense.

I think he is awesome. Like bought in on the gold stock. Uh so if you're looking for a way to motivate somebody, a sticky note with their name on it with some stars, it seems to be the trick.

I think I need three on the fridge. Three different sticky notes. Yep.

You probably better put one for yourself. No. I don't know. Just three.

One for you, one for Beck, one for Emery. Does the dog get one? No, the dog doesn't do anything.

Exactly. It'll never have stars on it. And then you can prove a point. See how everyone has stars and you don't pull your weight.

Pull your weight, dog. Every day I come home and I go, What'd you do today? And she just looks at me like I slept a bit.

I barked at a squirrel. I threw up in Emery's room. Yeah, when do you want to get it? Does that count? Do I get a star? So what's some gold star behavior?

Doing emptying the dishwasher without me asking. I do all the time. Okay, but our daughter's home most of the time.

Okay. Oh, you're so you're taking this beyond just me.

Yeah, I said there's three post-it nights. One for you, one for Beck, one for Emery. And each of you are gonna get gold stars. You can get some for cooking dinner. I do that all the time. No, I know. You'll get lots of stars for that. If we if you're not cooking, we're not eating. Let's be real.

You cooked last night. You made shrimp tacos. They were very good.

Yeah, and I hated every minute of it. I didn't hate it. I don't hate cooking. I just don't find enjoyment in it. But I was like, I gotta eat. And Josh is busy doing something, so I guess it's up to me.

Well, I appreciate you cooking.

I know what are we gonna do next week when you're out of town?

I guess you're gonna starve. I know it. I don't know what to tell you. You're going hungry.

What do you think you would get gold stars for?

Definitely chores makes sense. Okay. Um maybe I get one for like wearing a nice outfit that you're like, you look good. Gold star. Nah. You don't think so? No. Oh. That's not gold star worthy. I just, you know, doing something that you like, maybe I smell nice. You go, like, oh, you smell good.

Again, that's not gold star worthy. That just should be basics, basic hygiene.

No, I understand. I'm just saying there are times where you'll you'll like give me a hug and you go, Oh, you smell nice. I feel like you saying that means it should be worthy.

No, it's not gold star worthy. It's nice. Don't get me wrong, but no. No. You don't get a gold star for that. Try again. Next. I don't know. Mow in the yard for sure. Remember to take the garbage out. I do that. Okay, that's all just normal stuff. You're gonna get lots of gold stars.

What's the difference between those and and smelling nice? It's just general stuff I do.

That's not anything to benefit me. Huh.

Now I see how this works. I don't want these stars. Why? Because it's a made-up system.

It is a made-up system, but you knew that to begin with.

Right. But I was kind of into it, and now I'm like, no, you're just gonna be rude about it. Oh, you only get stars when it benefits me. So that's just rude. I should get stars for my performance, not for the benefits of you.

Okay, what if you had a gold star chart for me? What would be on the list? If I had an outfit on that you thought was cute. Yeah. If I smelled nice, gold stars for me. Let's go. See? See? Gold starts. See what? Dumb.

Maybe let's not do the gold star thing. Feels it feels like it might be uh what's the word I'm looking for? I don't know. A pitfall. It's probably a trap. It is feels like a trap. It feels like a trap.

Feels like somebody's gonna get real excited, and then they're not gonna get a star for something, and then they're gonna be mad about not getting a star because they feel like they've done something star worthy. Like smelled nice. I smell nice. Give me a star. And you go, no, I don't think I will.

I'm like, fine. Why even try? See how fast that falls apart? It's not a good system. You brought it up. I thought it was a good system. I changed my mind. I talked myself out of it. Don't do it.

How many years do you think you've tried to get the kids to go fishing?

Well, let's see. I started in what 20 16, something like that. Uh and I I tried a couple different fishing things. And when I got into fly fishing, I was really super into fly fishing, and I've still been like hooked. It's the best. I know, I know.

It's cliche. Uh, but it is one of the like great joys that I have in the world, and sharing it with other people is uh is awesome. So being able to go fish with with family and friends and being able to fish with the kids and you, it's that's it's great. It's good quality time, and I enjoy that because when you catch a fish, it lights you up.

It's a it's an adrenaline rush, it's just it's it it gives you an endorphin dopamine thing, it's just really cool. Like something something happens when you catch a fish and you you light up differently. I've got a picture of you holding a fish with the happiest smile, and it's just a silly fish.

But it's fun. I like that really I like to catch that fish. It's really cool when you catch a fish. It there's something that happens to you. You get real excited. That's why you smile different. You get big smiles when you catch a fish.

But you have tried desperately to get the kids to go with you, and they've every time you ask, they go, Oh no, no, thanks.

Well, so last year, Beck was like, I'm gonna go fish. Yeah. And so he got a license. He bought his own fly rod and reel. He's got a few flies in a box.

But it's uh, I would say it's a low-tier interest for him. This year he got a license again. I don't think he's gone. He hasn't gone. Oh. But he has a license, and he's like, I think I want to do that some more. But I'm like, okay.

You try and try and get to get Emory to go. She always turns you down. Yeah. Um, last night she well, yesterday she texted us and said, Hey, my boyfriend wants me to go fishing with him. And I went, you're gonna go.

Because there's a lots of times where he goes and she's like, I'm not going to hang out with you. Right, you're going fishing. And so I said, You're going fishing with him, and she said, Yep. And then she called me a little while later after she he had come to pick her up, and she goes, Hey, I'm buying a fishing license and I need this information. And I went, uh what? Yeah, I know. Won't go with her dad. It's fine. No, that's the way you know. You see how it is. Not cool enough. So she bought herself a fishing license. Yeah.

She was pretty excited to show you. show you last night I want to go yeah she comes in like I haven't seen one before But it is the first time she she bought one and with her own. Yeah, it's her own money and it's her own thing. And she went and did it. And I mean, she's 16, so she's had to have one since she was 14 to fish legally. Right.

Um, and so yeah, it's a big deal. This is the first time she's got one, and it was super cheap for for youth. What, like 18 bucks, something like that? Like it's not very expensive for resident season uh fishing.

I was just lord.

You but she called me now I've got to take her.

I need my social security license.

Your car. Yeah. Here's here's the thing. Uh, and and this is just my own little hang up about Idaho uh fishing licenses versus somewhere like uh Wyoming and I think Montana. Both of those uh states, when you buy it, it's good for 12 months. So if you buy it today, it expires a year from today.

Okay. In Idaho, it expires the 31st of December, and you have to get a new one in January. So it's good for the calendar year, not 12 months. I wish it was good for 12 months.

I agree. Because if I was, you know, if I was like I buy mine every year, and I have for a long time, but if I was going to uh honestly, you know what I should do. I should spend the money do the lifetime one and be done with it.

Oh, yeah, you should. I didn't even know that was an option.

Yeah, or they do a multiple year license. I should I should probably just spend a little extra and not have to think about it every year. I'm just thinking about that out loud. Uh but anyway, you know. But but I just wish it was on the annual calendar instead of the I didn't know that. Yeah. Like it you have to you have to buy it every year starting at January 1. Yeah, it should be worth a year. From when you buy it.

This date to this day. Yeah, I agree with you. I mean, it's technically the same.

It's I don't know if it's harder to keep track of. I don't know. Well, guess what?

Now you're gonna have to take Emory because now she has a fishing license. And now you're gonna have to go.

I know exactly where to take her. We'll have a great time.

I'm not I'm not gonna take her on the crazy hike. I'm gonna take her somewhere fun where she'll actually catch some little fish or something.

Well, then take me there too. Okay, but you don't have a license. No. Will you go get one? Maybe. And then put on your waiters. I do have waiters. I should probably use those. They were a lot of money. They're just hanging in the garage. I'll go buy a fishing license. Let's go. Why aren't you looking at me?

Would you rather this or that?

Would you rather your spouse laugh at all your jokes, even the bad ones, or never laugh unless they're genuinely funny? Okay, I'm gonna let you answer first. Well, you already you only laugh at stuff you think is genuinely funny, and it's not very often. When I do get a laugh out of you, I feel like the smartest, most funny person in the whole world. I'm like, wow. Wow. I feel fantastic.

I feel like it doesn't take much to make me laugh. Like I laugh at really dumb stuff.

Well, I get that, but like I'm I'm talking about like a full laugh. Like you'll chuckle.

Like yesterday, I couldn't, I almost lost my breath watching a video of a guy eating a banana. Like I know.

I can't compete with that. I I mean, it was hilarious.

I had to call people into the room to watch with me because I couldn't stop laughing. So it doesn't take much.

I haven't even seen that video. It doesn't take much, but I work my butt off every day to get you to laugh. Really? Yes. Yes. Really? I try so hard.

I really do. You sent me a video yesterday, and it was uh a guy, and he was like videotaping his wife kind of off in the distance, and he said, You're just trying. He said, Point of view, you're just trying to admire your wife. And then she happens to look over

and did the weirdest movement you've ever seen. He's like, look how great she looks. Isn't she just amazing? And then she turned into a troll demon. I don't know what it was the most awkward dance move you've ever seen. It was weird. Why'd you send that to me? Because that is the embodiment of you. Because that's what happens. I'll look at you over like, look at you. And you're like, this old thing. Stop it. Let me admire.

Oh, you like what you see. I did. So I do it.

Okay, what are you picking?

Well, what did you say? You want me to laugh at everything?

No, I feel like I don't want you to laugh at everything because I guess I'll just keep what I'm what we're doing. Just laugh at the stuff you think is genuinely funny, but I gotta either shoot lower because if you're just laughing at a video, a video of a banana.

Yeah, maybe you're thinking it's that's too eyebrow.

I might be. Wait till I show you this video. You're not even gonna believe it.

I know. It's that good. It's amazing.

What are you picking? I feel like I already laugh at you all the time. Anyway. I think you're hilarious. Oh, come on now.

I don't say that much funny stuff. Like I I just have a good time. I think that's all. I think you're just having a good time. I don't think you're like laughing at everything I say. I just think you're happy to be here.

I am happy to be here. I am happy. I'm I'm happy to be most places.

Actually, that's what I mean. Like I'm just happy to be.

I just feel like I'm a joyful person.

Yes, you are. and that I like. So I'm not changing it. Whatever answer is whatever you got going, I'll stick with that.

You said one nice thing.

I said one nice thing. all the time. What nice thing did you say? I said I think you're hilarious. Oh, that is true. You did say one nice thing. Look at us. Oh.

What are you doing? All right. So we've been talking about it a little bit this week, kind of Wednesday, yesterday a little bit, today, uh, here and there, but this is our last show for about 10 days. Uh we will be back in the studio live on Monday the 10th. So there won't be any live shows next week. Uh, because I'm headed to the mountains.

And I'm not saying listen to me when I say that I love you very much. You are, as I told you last time, you're my favorite person to be around.

But yeah, but so everything was made up until then. Go ahead.

Sometimes it's nice just to have a little bit of a break.

Yeah. Okay. Well, I don't know what you're gonna do.

I have already decided. I do like to sleep in the middle of the bed when you're gone. Yeah. So I'm already looking forward to that.

When are you washing the sheets? Sunday. Sunday. Yeah. Yeah. Got it. So I leave Sunday early in the morning. You're washing them Sunday, so you have fresh sheets. Yep. Because you love that. Yep.

I've already determined what I'm gonna watch on the TV. With captions on. Yes. What are you watching? All kinds of stuff. You have a whole list. I have a whole list.

Of things you've wanted to watch that you felt like you couldn't watch because I wouldn't be into it. Is that why?

Correct. Okay. Or things that you would make fun of me for watching. I'm not gonna make fun of you. Are you insane? When do I make fun of you? You go, I can't stand this show. Why do you watch this? Whoa.

Whoa, you who sounds like that. I never I never have that voice. Oh, I can't stand it when you watch this. I've never said that ever. I've I have said there are shows you watch that I don't necessarily enjoy, and you'll watch them like while you're cleaning or you carry your phone around watching them or whatever.

And I I go, okay, cool. I don't care for those shows. Some of the I don't know what they are, what they're called.

Dramedies or dra I don't know what they are. Uh I just don't like the some of the boy they're stories are told. So it's not funny. I get it. I know. And you don't like to watch a lot of the like uh Yeah. What what's this doc you series?

Oh, the other night. Hold on. We were going to bed the other night, and you said, hey, I'm gonna turn on this this video of this dude hiking of where I'm going hiking.

You want to watch that? Yeah, you fell asleep in about two seconds.

Yeah, you go, do you want to watch that? There's no narration or anything. I go, Oh yeah, let's watch that. That sounds weird. Wow. Josh.

I wanted you to see the beauty of where I'm gonna be because you're not gonna be there.

I understand. I know. I mean, I love you very much, but I am excited. I've already determined what we're gonna eat.

Yeah, I know you already went grocery shopping and uh

We're I think we're gonna go to sushi one night because you don't like sushi. That's right. We're absolutely gonna have breakfast for dinner one of the nights. Of course.

Um You're making delicious chili mac, which I like.

That was like that. That was a kid request. And I was not excited about that. They were like, we haven't had chili mac in a long time. I said, No, we're not.

I've been poor anymore. Whoa, whoa, whoa. Let's not get too ahead of ourselves. We also have been making real food that they don't like. Like I've been making all kinds of delicious food. And they're like, I'm not eating that. I'm like, okay. It's not chili mac.

Chili Mac was definitely something that they loved when they were little, and it was one of the quick, like it is super cheap, yeah, easy meals. It was kind of like uh, I don't know, just an easy it's good left over.

Like that's a yes, it is. I don't love it. Oh, I'll eat that for days.

they requested that. And so I said, okay, I'll make that.

So you got your TV shows planned. You got your clean sheets, so you're gonna have the bed all to yourself. Yeah. So you can uh you got we have a queen size bed. Uh so you get a little more room. You're gonna feel like you have a king when it's just you in there. Dude. So much space.

I want a king bed so bad. We stayed in the king when we were out of town. Right. It's so nice.

We could we could get rid of the nightstands and fit a king. That's what would have to happen. I know. Or at least one of them. I know.

It's not gonna happen. It's possible. Because I like my nightstands. Okay, but also while you're gone, you showed me around the garden and and told me what I need to do. I'm trying to give you kind of harvest while

you're trying what to keep an eye on. Do you remember? Uh that's it. The radishes? No, you know, I said you don't have to worry about the radishes.

You said I don't have to worry about the carrots. And then you said kind of keep an eye on the radio.

I just said if the if this one radish that's that's doing well gets decent, then you know, if if in ten days it gets big, right? Then you can harvest it. You said there's one.

There's new peas growing, so I kind of have to buy it. watch those. There's zucchini that we already have too much of that I've got to make some.

I have so much zucchini. Bread's crazy. And I have uh like what, five yellow squash as well. I got a lot of I got a lot going on there.

And then the butternut squash, you said keep an eye on.

Yeah, because it's a it's big. It's it's not quite all the way ready, but it's gonna be soon.

The pickle cucumber. Gotta watch for that. You gotta harvest pickles. I gotta watch the okra.

Yeah, if if it gets three inches long. Very good.

Then you clip that off. Good job.

Lots of cherry tomatoes. The cherry tomatoes, you're gonna you're gonna be able to pull those. I got a ton of those coming on right now. If more raspberries show up, emory's pretty good about the raspberries. Uh, she likes those.

Um that's pretty much it right now. Unless listened. Unless all of a sudden I get a whole bunch of like really fun squash and gourds and stuff, but they shouldn't like the they're blossoming right now for uh for pollination, which is very cool. That is very cool. Yeah. So yeah, if they get a little bit excited, I could get some uh some cool like bird house squash that I'm growing, like the gourds, birdhouse gourds, and all kinds of fun things. So I'm excited for those, but you gotta help them trellis. I will, Josh. I didn't get pokies in your fingers.

I I listened, I promise you. I know you think that I don't, but I listened. I know what I'm supposed to look out for. I got it. I got the garden handled. Don't even stress. I forgot to tell you.

Like every like three days, you gotta water the rhubarb and the herbs. They're not part of the watering system. Oh, okay. So they need supplemental water. Okay. Okay. I'll do that today.

So they won't only need it like a couple of times. Okay. That's another thing you gotta do. Okay, I got it.

The rhubarb and the herbs. Got it. Locked in. Okay. That's it. That's all.

Okay. Big plans. I'll be sleeping on the ground in my uh in my two-person tent by myself. So I'll have all the room in my tent on the ground. Fun. At an alpine lake every day. Different Alpine Lake. Which means fishing.

Which I'll do an alpine lake. cold It is gonna be cold. It's gonna be really cold.

We'll we'll be below freezing every night, which is weird because we'll be in the 80s and 90s in the day, and then sub 32 every night. That's crazy. Have fun. I will. And we'll be back with a new show on the 10th.
