Princeton's dining halls serve all meals on reusable plates. After their meal, students are expected to return their eating utensils to the dishwashing area, where they can be cleaned to be used by other students. But in recent years, the University has reported paying thousands of dollars to replace missing and damaged plates and silverware, particularly in the new colleges. I sat down with Senior News Editor Charlie Roth to find out more.

You can read more of Charlie's coverage at dailyprincetonian.com or at the link in our show notes.

In campus news, on Friday, the University introduced the Office of Innovation, which will be housed under the Office of the Dean for Research. Professor Craig B. Arnold of the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department will head the initiative. He said that the office plans to [quote] “nurture and support an environment where bold ideas take root”. The group plans to build partnerships with industry leaders and governments, work with faculty members to turn their discoveries into products for social benefit, and provide support for Princeton Innovation Center Biolabs, among other efforts. The office also intends to help boost local economic growth, through initiatives like building a New Jersey AI hub.

In national news, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court has declined to step in on mail-in ballot issues before the election. This decision follows a request from progressive groups to stop counties from throwing out ballots with no handwritten date or incorrect dates on the return envelope. Currently, Pennsylvania requires absentee voters to handwrite the date and sign the envelope of their mail-in ballot. The court said it [quote], “will neither impose nor countenance substantial alterations to existing laws [...] during [...] an ongoing election.” Chief Justice Debra Todd opposed, writing [quote], ‘“we ought to resolve this important constitutional question now, before ballots may be improperly rejected and voters disenfranchised." Bucks County, a notorious battleground area in Pennsylvania, is just under an hour away from Princeton.

In international news, Maldivian President Mohammed Muizzu is expected to seek a bailout worth hundreds of millions of dollars during his visit to India this week. The Maldives' foreign exchange reserves have dropped to $440 million, and are projected to see the country through only another six weeks of imports. Muizzu, who landed in Delhi on Sunday, said in an email statement that [quote] "as one of our biggest development partners, [India] will always be ready to ease our burden." This is in contrast with his previous policies, which worked to distance the Maldives from India and grow economic and infrastructural partnerships with China. According to economic analysts, China hasn't provided financial support during this period. Last week, Muizzu spoke at a Princeton School of Public and International Affairs event, where he said that the relationship with China has [quote] "the full support of the Indian government."

Today, you can expect morning clouds and some sunshine in the afternoon, with a high of 74 and a low of 45 degrees fahrenheit.

That’s all for Daybreak today.
