I’m Leah Brueggemann, a Functional Diagnostic Nutritional® Practitioner and Hormone Health Coach, helping you balance your hormones in effective and realistic ways so you can live a healthier, happier life.
Five years ago, I found out I had fibroadenomas (benign breast tumors), which 90% of the time return after surgical removal. I decided not to undergo the operation and instead found a way to heal the underlying cause. After years of extreme pain, irregular cycles, and ovarian cysts, I finally learned how to balance my hormones which healed my fibroadenomas and led me to regular, pain-free periods.
I learned how to make lifestyle shifts, remove toxins from my environment, and give my body what it actually needs to function optimally and heal on a cellular level. After my experience, I became a Functional Diagnostic Nutritional® Practitioner so that I can empower women in their own holistic health journey.
Even if you’ve been told your labs are normal or that your symptoms aren’t a cause for concern - YOU are the expert of your body and your experience. You deserve to feel AMAZING, not just “normal”. I’m here to help you achieve optimal overall health through simple, straightforward lifestyle changes that you can start to implement today.
Balancing Hormones Naturally isn’t just the name of the podcast, it’s the way forward to a happier, healthier life and I can’t wait to join you on the journey!

[SPEAKER_00]: What is going on tell me what is going on and she was just like oh you got mold like I know but bummer and she helped me you know take more of an objective look at that because you get so deep into your own health and it's hard to be objective.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm just over here like I'm a failure.
[SPEAKER_00]: I know nothing my labs weren't optimal
[SPEAKER_00]: This is horrible and thankfully I do know to ask for help.
[SPEAKER_00]: So I don't spiral out of control, but it was spiraling for sure.
[SPEAKER_00]: Didn't quite hit the out of control, but it was definitely spiraling.
[SPEAKER_00]: Welcome to the balancing hormones naturally podcast.
[SPEAKER_00]: This is your podcast host, Leah Brugman.
[SPEAKER_00]: I am a functional diagnostic nutritional practitioner.
[SPEAKER_00]: Here you're going to get actionable steps.
[SPEAKER_00]: You can take today to start balancing your hormones naturally so that you can maximize your menstrual cycle for painless periods, more energy and weight loss.
[SPEAKER_00]: Learn my three secrets to balancing hormones naturally.
[SPEAKER_00]: Just go to freehormonetraining.com and save your spot.
[SPEAKER_00]: Let's dive on it.
[SPEAKER_00]: High ladies, let's talk about the healing journey.
[SPEAKER_00]: Because it's ongoing in the fact that I don't think you ever go, I don't think about my health anymore.
[SPEAKER_00]: And I feel like my health and healing journey has taken turns where when I originally started, I definitely was very, I thought everything was soap women's, triton, the right labs and you can fix any issue.
[SPEAKER_00]: And as I continued, down that road, I realized that
[SPEAKER_00]: There's another big aspect to healing and that is nervous system.
[SPEAKER_00]: And I think nervous system is getting at some moment right now.
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know how long have we been doing nervous system in our program.
[SPEAKER_00]: We've been doing nervous system for a year and a half almost two years.
[SPEAKER_00]: So I would say we were just ahead of the curve of it being trendy.
[SPEAKER_00]: Or maybe it's just trendy in my world because I live in this world.
[SPEAKER_00]: But the reason why I found it to be so important in that healing journey is that we tend to have these beliefs that we've just always need to be working on our health or something.
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, if you've been sick for a really long time, we tend to just kind of stay in that mindset, you know?
[SPEAKER_00]: And it's kind of weird.
[SPEAKER_00]: So I wanted to kind of give you a recap of what started my healing journey in the first place.
[SPEAKER_00]: And then I want to share the hiccup I had when we had mold in our house.
[SPEAKER_00]: So that's fun.
[SPEAKER_00]: And you guys have heard the mold episode as long ago.
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_00]: So I first started my health journey when I was diagnosed with fibranonomas, which are benign breast tumors.
[SPEAKER_00]: I so breast cancer gallops in my family on both sides.
[SPEAKER_00]: So that's what made me take my health seriously at that point.
[SPEAKER_00]: So I grew up.
[SPEAKER_00]: My mom is very holistic.
[SPEAKER_00]: My mom is all into like holistic medicine.
[SPEAKER_00]: Leah.
[SPEAKER_00]: thought that skittles were appropriate breakfast food.
[SPEAKER_00]: So if I can give you insight into how someone can just vastly shift in their ideas of what is an appropriate breakfast food, I hope that gives it to you.
[SPEAKER_00]: Um, and I grew up with mom who was very, very, very much into holistic health.
[SPEAKER_00]: So I just makes me laugh.
[SPEAKER_00]: So anyways,
[SPEAKER_00]: When I graduated college, I was doing a self breast exam and I discovered a golf ball size and I went to the doctor was diagnosed with fibredinomas and that put me on the path of healing.
[SPEAKER_00]: No, it didn't put me on the path of wandering around trying random stuff because up till this point, I had had really painful periods like growing up on your period.
[SPEAKER_00]: taking the highest dose of my adult pop, and that stuff like it's candy, and throwing up on my beard.
[SPEAKER_00]: When I did ovulate, my cycles were super irregular all over the place.
[SPEAKER_00]: When I would, when I would ovulate, my projection was so low.
[SPEAKER_00]: My luteal phase, so ovulation period was eight days.
[SPEAKER_00]: Eight should be twelve to fourteen.
[SPEAKER_00]: And so obviously, not enough projection to be able to sustain pregnancy.
[SPEAKER_00]: And I went to natural pass, functional doctors there.
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, a lot of times I think certain doctors will just hone in on one thing.
[SPEAKER_00]: their specialty is heavy metals, their specialty is parasites, their specialty is mold, their specialty is lime, and you come to this doctor, and you really are expecting more of a holistic view of your health, it's like you have better, that's the issue.
[SPEAKER_00]: You know what, everyone who has a pulse who has a parasite, but not everybody needs to do a parasite cleanse.
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, and I just went around in circles and circles and circles and trying all sorts of stuff, you know, obviously I put me on a progesterone because that should definitely tell them the issue to not tell them the issue.
[SPEAKER_00]: Progesterone kind of made me psycho to every time I would have to cycle on a progesterone.
[SPEAKER_00]: It just made me feel like I was losing my mind.
[SPEAKER_00]: I would just
[SPEAKER_00]: get so mad at everyone around me and still didn't fix the issue of my irregular ovulation.
[SPEAKER_00]: Did all of the cleanses?
[SPEAKER_00]: Did all the detoxes?
[SPEAKER_00]: Did all the random labs?
[SPEAKER_00]: Nothing really worked.
[SPEAKER_00]: I was just told you know you have estrogen dominance.
[SPEAKER_00]: You have one of the MTHFR gene mutations.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's your issue.
[SPEAKER_00]: Nothing that they had me do was working.
[SPEAKER_00]: So when you fire them all and you hit the books, if I go back to have passed Leah and tell her to change something when she started her health journey, I would tell her to go find somebody who had done it.
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, instead of going, you know, you're a functional doctor and you went to school and you did that great.
[SPEAKER_00]: No, I want to go find somebody
[SPEAKER_00]: who had what I had, or very similar story, and then went on to study this, and works with women like me.
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, it's just a little bit more useful.
[SPEAKER_00]: So I would've told myself that.
[SPEAKER_00]: Anyways, that is when I went back to study, and figure this out myself, and look at my body as a whole.
[SPEAKER_00]: And it wasn't fast journey, but within six months, I would say, of implementing this, I was able to regulate my cycles and raise my testosterone
[SPEAKER_00]: and I got a positive pregnancy test.
[SPEAKER_00]: So all within that timeframe of implementing that and got painless periods or a digit painless periods before I got pregnant.
[SPEAKER_00]: And it was really, it was not one thing.
[SPEAKER_00]: I wish it was.
[SPEAKER_00]: It was no one thing.
[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously you have your basics.
[SPEAKER_00]: You know that you hear me talk about all the time blood sugar balance, eating for the rise and fall of your hormones, removing endocrine disruptors, getting on a little bit more specifically targeted supplementation than I needed versus just more general.
[SPEAKER_00]: And my fiber at Indomas had shrunk.
[SPEAKER_00]: They weren't completely gone at this point.
[SPEAKER_00]: And I got pregnant and had successful pregnancy very tired, post-partum.
[SPEAKER_00]: I was very tired, which I couldn't sleep very well.
[SPEAKER_00]: But very, very, very tired.
[SPEAKER_00]: And that is when I discovered minerals.
[SPEAKER_00]: So up until this point, you guys know, I talk about minerals all the time and how important they are.
[SPEAKER_00]: But before this, I hadn't run HTML testing.
[SPEAKER_00]: And I was very, I had done all the other testing.
[SPEAKER_00]: hadn't heard of HTML testing, hadn't done HTML testing.
[SPEAKER_00]: And so after I had my first son, sorry, I discovered minerals.
[SPEAKER_00]: And I...
[SPEAKER_00]: truly think that was such a game changer because now I had foundations, now I had the knowledge with nutrition and the lifestyle and all of that other stuff and then I added in this missing puzzle piece which is minerals and that is when my fiber and I was completely just peered.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm trying to think if I had anything else in that timeframe, this was like four and a half years ago.
[SPEAKER_00]: if I have to think back a while, see you guys.
[SPEAKER_00]: I should remember I was so tired, which is what made me look for something new because I needed more help postpartum than just nutrition because I was so depleted from the pregnancy and breastfeeding, which is how I found minerals.
[SPEAKER_00]: And I think when I started minerals, I also started herbs to support overall vitality of the body as well.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's when I came across mushrooms and used more herbs.
[SPEAKER_00]: So they kind of like integrated at the same time.
[SPEAKER_00]: And such a game changer.
[SPEAKER_00]: Such a game changer.
[SPEAKER_00]: Second pregnancy was worlds of difference in terms of, you know, energy and that postprime experience.
[SPEAKER_00]: And then we had a leak in our basement, which is where I worked majority of my time working and it had more bummer and
[SPEAKER_00]: We found it really quick.
[SPEAKER_00]: I was having symptoms.
[SPEAKER_00]: I remember being tired in my joints ache.
[SPEAKER_00]: Like, I felt like an old person.
[SPEAKER_00]: Like, I would wake up.
[SPEAKER_00]: Like, okay, I was thirty.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I was thirty.
[SPEAKER_00]: Like, why do my joints hurt?
[SPEAKER_00]: Like, I can't.
[SPEAKER_00]: I feel like I can't walk my ankle through everything.
[SPEAKER_00]: I was just in there.
[SPEAKER_00]: And that's when we found the mold.
[SPEAKER_00]: We did get our health remediated and
[SPEAKER_00]: pretty soon after that I decided to run labs because I suspected mold and obviously we had I had mold but something that I just felt was so defeating because right I'm constantly like you know supporting and taking care of my health right was that my blood work came back so wildly not great to me I wasn't that bad but it wasn't it wasn't great favorite
[SPEAKER_00]: ever mushroom company has a new set to just change your life, okay?
[SPEAKER_00]: So we love a versatile wellness mushrooms and I'm gonna quickly tell you why they are the only mushrooms that you should buy because you shouldn't waste your money, right?
[SPEAKER_00]: Nobody wants to waste their money.
[SPEAKER_00]: When it comes to mushrooms, you have to make sure you're taking a therapeutic dosage.
[SPEAKER_00]: And for a lot of companies out there,
[SPEAKER_00]: in order to hit an actual therapeutic dosage that's actually in the studies, you are going to be taking many, many, many, many, many capsules and nobody wants to do that.
[SPEAKER_00]: But because a versatile wellness has such a wonderful, beautiful extraction ratio, I don't need to do that.
[SPEAKER_00]: So I get to take one capsule of ratio to reach a therapeutic dosage that is actually shown to be beneficial in studies versus other companies having to take six to reach the same amount.
[SPEAKER_00]: One capsule, six capsules.
[SPEAKER_00]: This is why we choose a virtue.
[SPEAKER_00]: On top of that, they have glass packaging, which is fabulous.
[SPEAKER_00]: And they are rooting body only, which is very important with mushrooms.
[SPEAKER_00]: We don't want anything grown on grains.
[SPEAKER_00]: We don't like, we don't want the mycelium grown on grains.
[SPEAKER_00]: We want fruiting body only.
[SPEAKER_00]: certified organic and they're extremely transparent on their website posting all of their certificate of analysis.
[SPEAKER_00]: So this is why this is why we buy them because you actually notice a difference.
[SPEAKER_00]: I love hearing from you guys trying a versatile wellness mushrooms and telling me that you noticed such a difference and I just go, I know because they're amazing.
[SPEAKER_00]: So anyways, they came out with something called the starters that which just makes me love them because this
[SPEAKER_00]: is, is it the best set?
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's the best set to start with.
[SPEAKER_00]: So in a way, it's the best set.
[SPEAKER_00]: Hence why it's called the Starter Set.
[SPEAKER_00]: So it comes with the three-motion blend, lines, main, and regime.
[SPEAKER_00]: So three-motion blend, you're going to take in the morning.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's going to support your immune system.
[SPEAKER_00]: It is going to help give you natural energy and mental clarity.
[SPEAKER_00]: No jitters, literally.
[SPEAKER_00]: This will change your life.
[SPEAKER_00]: This is the one I tell everybody to start with.
[SPEAKER_00]: And then you're going to have that afternoon boost with Lyon's main.
[SPEAKER_00]: You're going to take that around lunchtime to help support mental clarity, sustain concentration, be productive.
[SPEAKER_00]: And then Rishi, you're going to take it night time to help manage stress, prepare for deep, restful sleep.
[SPEAKER_00]: great for cortisol, where she's great for my PCOS ladies as well.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's just all around amazing.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's called the starter set with worth it.
[SPEAKER_00]: All their sets are ten percent off and you can stack with a discount code, so you're really just winning at life here.
[SPEAKER_00]: So you can go to aversial wellness.com.
[SPEAKER_00]: It is called the starter set.
[SPEAKER_00]: You get ten percent off.
[SPEAKER_00]: You can stack that with the discount code Leah for an extra fifteen percent off.
[SPEAKER_00]: So like I said, crushing it.
[SPEAKER_00]: Eversio Wellness.com EVER SIO.
[SPEAKER_00]: Use the coupon code Leah.
[SPEAKER_00]: So I want to run these tests.
[SPEAKER_00]: I think I ran these tests like two and a half three months after being exposed to mold because I was finishing breastfeeding at the end of that.
[SPEAKER_00]: So that's why I waited to run them because I'm like, I can't do
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't want to get to intense into anything until I'm done breastfeeding.
[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm going off a memory here.
[SPEAKER_00]: I could pull them up, but I remember I got the labs back and my dream was needed help.
[SPEAKER_00]: My TSA, my thyroid was at two
[SPEAKER_00]: point.
[SPEAKER_00]: I was like my thyroid.
[SPEAKER_00]: My tears just never been.
[SPEAKER_00]: So what's going on here?
[SPEAKER_00]: And my antibodies were negative, but the T-IV T-III were not optimal.
[SPEAKER_00]: My glucose was fine.
[SPEAKER_00]: My fasting insulin was higher.
[SPEAKER_00]: I think it was a seven.
[SPEAKER_00]: And you guys know, I like to see that below five, seven point eight.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm trying to remember.
[SPEAKER_00]: I know it was seven.
[SPEAKER_00]: I think it was seven.
[SPEAKER_00]: I just felt so different.
[SPEAKER_00]: I just felt so defeated because I obviously was more tired.
[SPEAKER_00]: I was dealing with brain fog and my joints ached.
[SPEAKER_00]: I know that part was mold, but emotionally it was hard for me to go.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's also probably why your blood works off.
[SPEAKER_00]: As a practitioner, I know that.
[SPEAKER_00]: I can tell you that, but emotionally it was hard for me to make that connection.
[SPEAKER_00]: Emotionally I was just like, you suck.
[SPEAKER_00]: If you don't know what you're doing, what on earth is wrong with you?
[SPEAKER_00]: and take a really big setback with myself.
[SPEAKER_00]: And this is why I outsource my lips.
[SPEAKER_00]: So I sent my lips to somebody else.
[SPEAKER_00]: I sent them to another FDN.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm good friends with.
[SPEAKER_00]: It was like, what is going on?
[SPEAKER_00]: Tell me what is going on.
[SPEAKER_00]: And she was just like, oh, you got mold.
[SPEAKER_00]: Like, I know, but bummer.
[SPEAKER_00]: And she helped me, you know, take more of an objective look at that because you get so
[SPEAKER_00]: deep into your own health and it's hard to be objective.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm just over here like, I'm a failure.
[SPEAKER_00]: I know nothing.
[SPEAKER_00]: My labs weren't optimal.
[SPEAKER_00]: This is horrible.
[SPEAKER_00]: And thankfully I do know to ask for help.
[SPEAKER_00]: So I don't spiral out of control, but it was spiraling for sure.
[SPEAKER_00]: Didn't quite hit the out of control, but it was definitely spiraling.
[SPEAKER_00]: And I
[SPEAKER_00]: Remember it just was impacting like all these areas of my life I felt like because I just felt all of a sudden like I just wasn't good enough and I remember I came back from a riding lesson and I I got into super nauseous while I was riding and I just felt like I can't even ride anymore I don't even know what I'm doing here see how you just start spiraling into all these areas and I came home and my husband had written me a note I love him.
[SPEAKER_00]: He doesn't also jump being a husband
[SPEAKER_00]: And he wrote, you have got the signal.
[SPEAKER_00]: It feels really hard right now, but you know what to do.
[SPEAKER_00]: Just take a step back and do what you know you know to do.
[SPEAKER_00]: And I just pulled my eyes out.
[SPEAKER_00]: I had to take a shower because this was like a horse.
[SPEAKER_00]: And I pulled my eyes out in the shower and I felt like that gave me
[SPEAKER_00]: the next step that I needed to do and that was just sit back, look over, you know, what this FDN, other practitioner had sent over to me and really dialing what I knew I needed to do.
[SPEAKER_00]: And part of that was taking a step back and really creating a boundary routine with my nervous system.
[SPEAKER_00]: Because it's really easy to start getting lost in the little looks and crannies of just being busy, right?
[SPEAKER_00]: And so I
[SPEAKER_00]: really dialed everything in for, I think it was four months doing all the things I knew I was supposed to do, everything I should do.
[SPEAKER_00]: And I rerun my lamps, and they were back to you.
[SPEAKER_00]: Good.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, think of it.
[SPEAKER_00]: But it was around that time that I also started becoming an NLP practitioner because of what a big impact I noticed it had with my house.
[SPEAKER_00]: because I needed to start to let go of these beliefs because if soon as something happened with my health, where did I go?
[SPEAKER_00]: I went right back to you're not good enough.
[SPEAKER_00]: You said, you know what you're doing?
[SPEAKER_00]: Even though that's not true.
[SPEAKER_00]: Objectively, that's not true.
[SPEAKER_00]: Emotionally, like objectively, this is connected to being exposed to multiple, right?
[SPEAKER_00]: But emotionally, I had a really hard time with that.
[SPEAKER_00]: And so because that made such a big difference in my health,
[SPEAKER_00]: like being able to really let go of those beliefs and rewire them more importantly, rewire this subconscious part of your brain there.
[SPEAKER_00]: I knew I needed to bring that to my clients and so that's when I went to become an NLP practitioner and we now bring that to our clients.
[SPEAKER_00]: So I kind of want to just share a little bit about like
[SPEAKER_00]: the simplification of things that really helped with rebarring my brain and what my focus is on, postpartum again.
[SPEAKER_00]: So I really feel like the simplification of things was not trying to overcomplicate healing.
[SPEAKER_00]: You don't need a million supplements, you don't need a million protocols, sometimes simpler isn't better.
[SPEAKER_00]: rewiring your brain doesn't mean you have to sit here and be like, I am healed.
[SPEAKER_00]: I am amazing.
[SPEAKER_00]: Your brain is not even going to believe that.
[SPEAKER_00]: So it was the little, like, it was the big moments of actually working with someone to help with that.
[SPEAKER_00]: But it was also the little moments throughout the day of the focusing on the good reminders.
[SPEAKER_00]: Like, look, like, you know, digestion was great with that meal or look, we're having more energy today or look.
[SPEAKER_00]: on whatever it is.
[SPEAKER_00]: Right?
[SPEAKER_00]: And when you would have a bad day, not letting it mean anything.
[SPEAKER_00]: Just feedback.
[SPEAKER_00]: Doesn't mean anything.
[SPEAKER_00]: Just feedback.
[SPEAKER_00]: It was those little things every day that made the big things.
[SPEAKER_00]: And I have to remind myself of this all the time, especially because of how kids feed off of your nervous system that if I feel like I'm getting overstimulated, nothing is an emergency.
[SPEAKER_00]: You can put down whatever I'm working on.
[SPEAKER_00]: we can all go outside, we can all go downstairs in the basement, we can all dance, we can all hum, it's not an emergency.
[SPEAKER_00]: And I really had to tell myself like it's an emergency, these things are not an emergency, right?
[SPEAKER_00]: And that has really just made such an impact because how often do you go throughout your day feeling like everything's an emergency?
[SPEAKER_00]: Everything needs to be done right now, right?
[SPEAKER_00]: And so,
[SPEAKER_00]: I feel like the biggest things that I'm currently working on when it comes to nervous system is always setting myself up for success with my kids because I'm going to be completely honest between running a business and having kids and making food.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's easy to get overstimulated.
[SPEAKER_00]: There's a lot of people asking for things.
[SPEAKER_00]: There's a lot of people asking questions.
[SPEAKER_00]: right and so I just have to set time for this is for this person and this is for this person and sometimes those lines blend through like sometimes on a call my kid has to be sitting with me you know and that happens but really setting the space that nothing is an emergency nothing is an emergency okay obviously there are real life emergencies you guys know that's how when I'm talking about okay so if things need to get set down and move to a later date it's okay
[SPEAKER_00]: And then also recognizing that we always need support, you know?
[SPEAKER_00]: And I think it's really important to make sure as a practitioner that you're coming back to retesting, right?
[SPEAKER_00]: You're coming back to retesting and you're coming back to having somebody else always like help you.
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, because that's what you're really good at for doing for other people, but it's easy to get lost in the weeds for yourself.
[SPEAKER_00]: And so I just recommend staying on top of
[SPEAKER_00]: having somebody else keep you objective, and I have somebody else ask you hard questions.
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay?
[SPEAKER_00]: Somebody asked me hard questions today, and I think it would be useful for you.
[SPEAKER_00]: So she said, how do you find yourself becoming, oh, we're committed?
[SPEAKER_00]: Like, how did you get to this base of feeling like you're overcommitted in different areas, like if too many things do you know?
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm just like, I don't know.
[SPEAKER_00]: How did I get here?
[SPEAKER_00]: Did I say yes to too many things?
[SPEAKER_00]: Did I not create a priority that I should have?
[SPEAKER_00]: Did I not hold a boundary?
[SPEAKER_00]: Did I not say no?
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
[SPEAKER_00]: So if you find yourself super busy running around like a crazy person, I just encourage you to ask yourself, how did that happen?
[SPEAKER_00]: And I also encourage you to outsource your house.
[SPEAKER_00]: not outsource your power, but outsource somebody else being able to take on the bird's eye view for you.
[SPEAKER_00]: Because it's like changing.
[SPEAKER_00]: It really is, and it makes such a big difference to have somebody walk along side you and for you to be able to let it go.
[SPEAKER_00]: You don't have to know everything.
[SPEAKER_00]: You don't have to figure everything out.
[SPEAKER_00]: You just gotta take the next step.
[SPEAKER_00]: So that's you.
[SPEAKER_00]: The hormone reset program would be a fabulous fit for you.
