Renew Your Mind: How to Break Negative Thought Patterns
(Hook)
Before you can renew your mind…
You have to identify what you’ve been believing.
Because many of your thoughts are not random…
They’re rooted in beliefs.
(Intro)
Welcome Back to The Word Woman.
Over the next few weeks, we'll explore what it truly means to understand your identity in Christ through our IDENTITY SERIES titled: From Lost to Rooted in Who God Says You Are. This series is designed to help you break free from false beliefs and begin living as the woman God intended you to be one-step-at-a-time.
(Music)
Let’s be honest…
Have you ever known what God says…
but still struggled with what you think?
Like you hear the truth…
you read the scriptures…
but your mind keeps going back to the same negative thoughts?
If that’s you…
This episode is for you.
You won’t experience transformation in your life until your mind changes.
The Real Battle Is in Your Mind
The biggest battles you face are not always external…
They’re internal.
The enemy doesn’t need to control your life if he can control your thoughts.
Because your thoughts shape:
• Your emotions, decisions and behavior
And eventually… your life.
Romans 12:2
“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind…”
Notice that word—transformed.
That means real change happens when your mind is renewed.
Not just when you pray.
Not just when you listen to a message.
But when your thinking actually changes.
I found this to be one of the hardest things to do during my Christian journey. Trying to undo years of thinking one way, how we’re brought up, our cultures, words people spoke over us in order to live another way. A Christ-centered way. And just when you thought you got it, you found out there was more to it. Just like humans, the word has many layers. When you think you’ve received all the revelation of a scripture, the Holy Spirt will show you something deeper in that same scripture. So, you never stop growing and changing.
You Can’t Live a New Life With an Old Mind
Think about the old wine skins in Matthew 9: 17: “Neither do people pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst; the wine will run out, and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.” God is taking your old life, your thoughts and changing you into someone new for His Glory and your good.
A lot of people want a new life…
But they still think the same way.
You can love God…
and still struggle mentally.
But if your mind hasn’t been renewed…
You’ll keep going back to the same patterns.
2 Corinthians 10:5
“We take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”
That means you don’t just accept every thought that comes into your mind.
You evaluate it.
You ask yourself:
“Does this align with what God says?”
If it doesn’t… you cast it down, don’t entertain it and tell yourself, no, I won’t let my mind go there.
Identify the Lies
Before you can renew your mind…
You have to identify what you’ve been believing.
Because many of your thoughts are not random…
They’re rooted in beliefs.
Some common ones:
• I’m not worthy
• I’m not lovable
• I’ll never get it right
• I’m too broken
But just because you think it… doesn’t mean it’s true.
You have to stop agreeing with lies.
Replace Lies With Truth
Renewing your mind is not just about stopping negative thoughts…
It’s about replacing them with truth.
John 8:32
“You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
So, when a thought comes like:
“I’m not enough”
You replace it with:
“I am God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good work, which God prepared in advance for me to do. (Ephesians 2:10)
When the thought says:
“I’m stuck”
You replace it with:
“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13)
When the thought says:
“I’m alone”
You remind yourself:
“God is with me always, even unto the end of the world” (Matthew 28:20)
This is how you fight.
Speak It Out Loud
There is power in what you speak.
Romans 10:17
“Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
So sometimes you don’t just think the Word…
You say it out loud.
Even when you don’t feel it.
Even when your emotions don’t match it.
Because what you hear repeatedly…
Eventually shapes what you believe.
Be Consistent, Not Perfect
Renewing your mind is not a one-time thing.
It’s daily.
Some days will feel easier than others.
Some days you’ll catch the thoughts quickly.
Other days you might struggle.
That doesn’t mean it’s not working.
It means you’re in the process.
Isaiah 26:3
“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are stayed on You…because they trust in you.”
Peace comes from keeping your mind on God.
And that takes intention.
Closing
If your mind has been a battlefield…
I want you to hear this:
You are not stuck.
You are being renewed.
Every time you choose truth over lies…
You are changing.
Every time you speak God’s Word…
You are strengthening your faith.
This is how transformation happens.
Its consistent repetition everyday
