Full show transcript:
Our daughter hasn't been feeling well, she just had a little bit of an eye infection.
Yes.
Is it?
Is that what it is?
Yeah, we didn't really get a diagnosis, but he did prescribe us some eye drops for an
infection.
Okay.
And it's not conjunctivitis or pink eye or anything, so settle down.
So, you can't divide us.
Let's see official name of pink eye.
Is it?
Yep.
Oh.
I did not know that.
Well, now you do.
So, she's been kind of like staying at home, kind of hiding out the light a little
hurt, so she's been kind of hanging out in the basement in the dark.
And last night she needed a little bit of a pick me up and she was like, "Refreshment?"
Yeah, oh, can I have a treat?"
And so I said, "I'll go get your refreshment."
So, we went to one of her favorite places, which is Dutch Bros.
And she had a specific order and she goes, "Never mind, they're going to mess it up."
And I went, "They're not going to mess it up.
Send me a picture of what it looks like and if they get it wrong, then I'll just say,
"I'm sorry, this isn't it."
She sent me a picture and the name of the drink and I told the woman that helped me, the
very kind woman that helped me.
I said, "Listen, I have a very cranky teenager at home and if you don't get this right,
then I'm going to have to pay for this.
So, I need you to help me out."
Yeah.
She was like, "I got you."
Yeah.
This is all good.
It ended up being the right thing.
It ended up bringing the right thing.
We ordered it correctly.
Tasted great.
Everyone was in good spirits.
I know.
Dodge the whole it on that one.
It's a rush, but yeah.
We might live with someone toxic in our house.
You think?
Yeah.
We got a people pleaser who also is a bit selfish and needy.
And when she needs something, whether it be attention or a treat or food, the whole house
shudders.
Yeah, and it's, yeah, everything is on her turf.
Yeah.
We might be in the abusive relationship.
We might be.
We might be.
I think it gets better like early 20s.
They become normal people.
Yeah, I think so.
So we're close.
I love her 90% of the time, but it's--
Well, it's 100% of the time.
It's just the--
The dealin' with-- with ya is tough.
Some days you're like, oh, OK.
What kind of motor we in today?
Oh, everybody run and hide.
You never know.
[LAUGHS]
Well, good job on the treat.
I'm glad that that worked out because that was disaster avoidant.
Yeah, I know.
It had been very stressful.
High five to the employee at Dutch Bros.
Yeah.
Great job makin' the right drink.
You want to start today's show?
Let's do it.
Hello, hello.
You want to mash up a bunch of words like, hey, good morning,
and hello, all together?
Like, if you--
Is that what happened in your mouth?
Hello, hello.
Hey, there.
That is exactly what just happened.
A bunch of weird noise fell out.
Doing good this morning, Josh.
So far.
Too in, so good.
So far, so good.
Hey, what's going on today?
Let's see.
I have no idea.
I mean, on the show?
Just in general, on the show, in life, in the world,
hmm.
You know, what's going on?
Well, I know on the show today, we've
got a bunch of giveaways to do--
We do have a lot of giveaways.
We have smarts, and we've got North Pole password,
and we've got fun to have.
We're going to have a lot of fun.
Are we?
We always have a lot of fun.
Not just a little fun, a lot.
OK, buckets of fun.
Come in your way this morning.
Buckets, pales, sandpales.
[LAUGHS]
I feel like buckets are bigger than sandpales.
I feel like a sandpale is pretty small.
Yeah, I guess so.
Depends.
Is it a mop bucket or a home depot bucket?
I was thinking five gallon big buckets.
Was that what you were thinking?
Yeah, if I was going to go bigger, I'd say barrels.
When you said buckets of fun, you were like, yeah, five gallons.
Yes, five gallons of fun.
Stowed away in a little bucket.
Sometimes it overflows, and you can't put the lid on.
That's how much fun we're having.
Over, five gallons of fun.
It's a new slogan.
Yeah, over five gallons of fun.
[LAUGHS]
What is it?
You could get a 10 gallon hat.
I was thinking about that.
And you could have 10 gallons of fun.
I was thinking about a 10 gallon hat.
You were?
I was.
When you said five gallon bucket.
Why is it called that?
I was just going to say that same thing, too.
Ah!
That's like you're in my mind.
What?
[LAUGHS]
What is that?
A 10 gallon hat cannot hold 10 gallons liquid,
but it can hold 10 gallons of fun.
Or 10 gallons of cowboy.
It actually holds less than one gallon.
Why is it called that?
Linguistic experts in historical records indicate
the term comes from a misunderstanding
of the Spanish word galón, which means a braid or decorative
hatband, or the phrase tangolan, which
means very handsome by a Mexican vacayero.
Cowboys?
Yeah.
So that is where the term is because people heard galón.
And they're like, "Oh, that means galon."
It's a galon hat.
10 gallon.
[LAUGHS]
I know what that means.
That's right.
OK.
10 gallons of fun.
Five gallons are show is five gallons, not 10 gallons.
Over.
We're all flowing the buckets of fun.
Heaps.
Heaps of fun.
Udals.
Piles.
[LAUGHS]
Whatever.
Good morning.
[MUSIC PLAYING]
How about some good news?
Sure.
OK.
This is from the class of 1972.
All right.
At C-more High School in Indiana, they
returned to class earlier this month,
and they were greeted--
students that returned to the school
were greeted with a brand new sign
out in front of the school that says,
"Welcome to C-more High School."
They started school before we do around here.
But the sign was donated to the high school by the class of 1972.
They held a fundraiser for their 50th class reunion.
And since the reunion, the class of '72
has raised $40,000, which is pretty awesome.
And they worked with the high school district
to have the sign designed, built, and installed.
It's both a lasting monument to the classmate
who attended C-more High School so many years ago,
and also offers a welcoming spirit.
All the students will be attending the school
in the years and decades ahead.
So welcome to C-more High School.
That's kind of nice.
Yeah, that's quite fun.
That's kind of fun.
Prior graduates are like, you know what?
I still have enough school pride that I
want to make the students that are currently going
there feel special.
Yeah.
And it is a cool brick sort of thing with a lit up--
it's a light up sign that says,
welcome to C-more High School.
It's kind of cool.
That is cool.
Yeah.
Super fun.
They're possible by the C-more High School class of 1972.
The C-more Owls.
That's their mascot.
That's a cool mascot?
Yeah.
I want to--
I was a bobcat.
Yeah.
And then a bangle.
I was a griz.
And then a radio DJ.
Because I don't think the school that I dropped out
of had a mascot.
I don't think DeVry Institute of Technology--
The DeVry Devils?
No.
The DeVry Demogorgans?
Let me see if they have a mascot.
I don't know why it has to have the same first letter.
The DeVry.
Yeah.
DeVry University is not having official masks.
Yeah.
Because they do not have traditional sports teams.
You know why?
Why?
Because--
Because it's a bunch of engineering--
It's a bunch of engineers.
It's not really the thing.
The school focuses on career-based online and campus programs
for adult loan learners.
So it skips standard college athletic programs and spirit
symbols.
And instead, it just says, do your work.
We don't want any spirit symbols whatsoever.
No.
No, we're here to have engineers.
We're here to learn.
That's right.
That's right.
That's right.
Learn.
Anyway, congrats to see more at high school.
That's very fun.
And well done, class of '72.
So there it was in the store, in the toothpaste aisle, going,
do I typically get crests or cold gait?
And this happens every time.
And I don't know what toothpaste I like more than the other.
But I know that there's one that I like more than the other.
Right.
But I can't ever remember what it is.
Did you get the wrong one?
I got the wrong one.
No way.
But what I found out is I'm a crest girl.
So am I.
I like crest.
I'm a crest girl with scope.
I am a crest girl.
Curly.
I think that's what they say.
I'm a crest girl.
We don't share the same toothpaste because you don't like the way that I get the toothpaste
out.
We've talked about you being a middle squeezer quite a bit.
Yeah.
And it's fine.
Yeah.
I proudly--
It'd be way worse if it was a metal tube like it used to be.
Metal tube?
I'd never known a metal tube.
You've never known a metal tube?
Well.
I don't remember toothpaste coming in metal tubes.
Yeah.
Did it really?
Sure.
And then they switched everything to plastic like decades ago.
Okay.
Because I noticed I got the cold gate which is not-- it was on sale.
And I think that's why I picked it.
Okay.
Which I had to do one of those like--
On sale from how much to how much because I'm looking right now online at the gay hour.
Crest with scope that I use and it's $3.99.
Yeah.
Mine was-- it was on sale for $3.99 but then it was on a digital download for $2.99.
Oh yeah.
You had a coupon.
Yeah.
But the digital download-- I don't even know if that worked.
Did you do it?
I don't know.
I thought I did.
But then I didn't look when I was checking out.
I don't know if it worked.
Anyway, then I got the toothpaste tube that has the cap that you flip off.
Oh, I hate that.
And I don't like that either.
I like a screw on lid.
I like a screw on lid too.
Yeah.
Because the cap just gets all gung done.
Yeah.
A double ruined it.
Yeah, you did.
I got the cold gate and the pop off lid.
Bummer.
I know.
And so what's in the cold gate?
I don't know.
Does it have like breath strips?
Does it have like max fresh?
Which one did you get?
I don't know.
With a cool mint.
I don't know.
Do you know that I stood in that aisle for a long time going?
What does my toothpaste look like?
Yeah.
I couldn't remember what brand.
I know mine has scoped in it, so it's really easy.
Because cold gate doesn't have scoped.
No.
Cold gate has max fresh.
Maybe that's the one I got.
I might have gotten that one.
What does it look like?
The thing is, here's the thing.
Yeah, it's max fresh with whitening breath strips.
I know.
I did not get armen hammer.
You don't like that?
My mom used to get armen hammer.
That's just the baking soda stuff.
I did.
I didn't like it.
You ever do the charcoal toothpaste?
I have it.
Have you?
No.
I always thought the people that used aquafresh were rich.
Fancy?
Yeah, because it has the red, the white, and the blue.
Oh, yeah.
I always thought that was fancy toothpaste.
I remember those commercials when they were like, "Oh, look at that toothpaste."
The commercials where they put way too much toothpaste on the toothbrush?
No, I got-- okay, yeah, they did put way too much toothpaste.
Way too much.
I'm just looking at the cold gate brands here.
I got the cavity protection.
No.
Fancy.
Yeah, totally $1.99 on sale.
With your digital coupon that may or may not work?
Do you have the app on your phone?
Yeah, I do.
And so when you scan it, it should open up the app and you would hit the clip coupon button.
Why do they have to make the toothpaste so similar?
Look, I'm looking at the one they both start with C to their both red and blue.
This is why we get confused every time.
Right.
They're counting on that because if you weren't such a crest girly, you might be like, "Oh,
I got the cold gate, it'll do."
Oh, it's on sale.
You never did the cinnamon?
I have done that before.
You have?
I don't like the aftertaste.
It's something else to wake up and close up is the cinnamon brand.
They're still making it.
Anyway.
Anyway, I know now I'm a crest gal and I won't soon forget it.
Well, okay.
I don't know why I haven't just been like, "Listen, this is the type of toothpaste you use."
Just remember scope.
No, I'm crest.
I'm a crest gal.
Then when I go to the stall, I'll be like, "Cool gate gal."
Yeah.
That's why I remember scope.
It has scope in it and then I can go, "Oh, that's the only one with scope in it.
Got it.
Crest.
That's what I have."
That's your slogan.
Crest.
That's what I have.
That's what I use.
Crest.
Crest is the best.
Oh, look at what they need to pay you for that.
Thank you.
You were trying to fall asleep last night and I went to the bathroom and I grabbed a basket.
Yeah.
And you said, "What's that?"
I knew what it was.
Why did you ask what it was said?
Because I just wanted to confirm that that's what was about to happen.
I was trying to figure out why I had a headache this morning.
I think I figured it out.
No, it is not because of that.
Because in this basket is fingernail polish remover and little scrubby pads and files
and all the fingernail polish and whatever and it's 10 o'clock at night and you're like,
"I got to paint these nails."
Yeah.
And I went here in bed where I'm trying to exist.
We're out of my guess.
It smells so bad.
We're out of my supposed hair.
Outside.
Go outside.
Improper ventilation.
And also, ugh.
It stinks.
I know.
I know it stinks.
Didn't stop you?
No.
I had to do it.
It's like if I cleaned a fish in the bed.
You're going to do that here?
Yeah.
While you're trying to sleep.
We turned on a movie.
Yeah.
And I was watching the movie.
Okay.
Well, painting my fingernails.
Yeah.
It could have been done elsewhere.
It could have.
You're right.
It could have.
Should have.
It didn't.
No kid.
I can't.
You got to be the only person painting their fingernails at 10 o'clock while somebody's trying
to sleep.
Doubt it.
I bet there's other people.
Raise your hand.
Raise your hand.
Yeah.
None.
Look at all these people.
Zero.
No hands up.
Whatever.
I bet there's at least five.
No way.
Yes.
No way.
Here's when I kept hearing.
It's so bad.
And then you'd bury your face in the pillow.
I know, but then it was too hot.
And then I'd be like, oh, chill out.
I'm almost done.
Oh, I've got to find something equally as awful to do while you're trying to sleep.
Cleaning a fish.
That's equally as awful.
Yeah.
Stable.
Except the difference is that I am much more vocal about complaining.
I know.
I'm recognizing that.
Oh, I'm just going to take notes so that I know what to say when I do something horrifying,
terrible, gross, smelling thing.
And you go like, ooh, this is awful.
And I'm going to go chill out.
It's no big deal.
Chill out.
You're going to be fine.
Go to sleep.
Put your head in the pillow.
Shh.
I'm busy.
That's how it's going to go.
What's something you could do?
What's something equally as Iick?
I don't even know because it's uncomfortable to do anything in the bed anyway.
No, lay down, sleep.
That's it.
I'm going to sit up there and do like, tie flies?
No.
Well, that doesn't sting.
No, I know.
I do my makeup in the bed.
Sometimes when you were gone all last week, I would go make breakfast and then I'd come
back and eat it on the bed.
Why?
Because I like it.
What's the tables for?
No.
We have a table for eating at.
Oh, I'm full aware of the table.
We have a bathroom and everywhere else in the house for doing fingernails stuff.
It isn't in the bed with someone else trying to sleep.
I don't know.
I don't know what gross thing I'm going to do that is going to be right when you're falling
asleep, but I'll come up with it.
Oh, I'll be ready.
Yeah.
Relax.
It's okay.
It's only going to take 30 minutes.
It took less than 30 minutes.
The smell did not.
Cry, baby.
Oh, I'm a cry baby.
Okay.
Marriages, spot, huh?
Yeah, it is.
I enjoy it.
Just not that part.
Go do it somewhere else.
Next time?
Maybe.
I'll think about it.
It's whatever is convenient, Josh.
I had just gotten out of the shower.
I was waiting for my hair to dry.
Right.
You said that.
I got to do this.
We turned on a movie.
I would have left the movie paused while you did that.
And then you would have fallen asleep.
Yep.
Without smelling that.
That's why I have a headache.
You did it out.
Poor memories.
You know, those magic tree house books that our kids used to.
Yeah.
Like dinosaurs at dawn.
Right.
A row on our show, today is that fingernail painting at bedtime.
Yeah.
It's a magic tree house store.
It's not though.
It's real life and it happened.
And I'm sad about it.
Still?
Yes.
Okay.
You can still smell it.
I've officially started my drumming adventure.
Yeah.
I just saw you with two pens.
Yeah.
And I noticed you're holding them not the same.
They're not long enough.
No, but one's upside down and one's the other way.
Well, I know.
I just grabbed them.
Those aren't drumsticks, Josh.
I'm aware they're pens.
I can see with my eyeballs that are indeed pens, not drumsticks.
At one point you said you were carrying drumsticks around so you could practice, but that
is not the case.
Well, I actually forgot this morning, but I wanted to because as I'm sitting here, I could
practice.
I could practice drumming along to the music.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I really could.
And I just forgot.
There's a picture of you behind the drum kit.
Well, part of the drum kit.
I have not fully assembled the kit because it's big.
It's all already taken up a lot of the living room.
You had to turn the coffee table the other way so that you could get around the living room
around the drum kit.
Right.
That's in the middle of the living room.
Yeah.
And that's the way it goes when you want to practice drums in your house.
So I have, yeah.
I just took out the bass drum, the snare drum, and the hi-hat.
That's right.
Because I figured that's where you need to start.
And you have a friend who's a drummer, a co-worker, someone you know who's a drummer who you've
talked to about lessons.
And you said to him, "Oh, Josh told me I just need to focus on these three things."
And he went, "Well, yeah, yeah, but then as you've been taking a video lessons and stuff
off of YouTube or whatever, what are they focused on?"
Those three things.
Because you got to kind of get, like, figure out how to get the basic rhythms.
I'm like, "I'm not going to throw you floor tom and these toms and crash cymbals and all
this other stuff all at once.
It's too much.
You're going to look at it and go, "I don't know what to do with all this stuff."
Right.
And then we had to, like, hold the drums, fix properly.
It's all about like being relaxed, which I know how to do.
It's comfortable.
Yeah, you do.
And then finding like the rhythms and then reading sheet music and...
And we did, I showed you a video from the drum and granny, which, "Did you like it?
She's cool."
She is cool.
She was playing some rock and roll.
But then she had a nice little message at the end that was like, "Hey, listen, don't judge
people just by their looks.
You don't know what they're capable of."
Exactly.
Like, she had a really nice, positive, like, "You can be a drummer if you want to be a drummer.
They come in all different shapes and sizes."
I want to be a drummer.
I see that.
I really do.
I've wanted to play a lot of different instruments throughout my whole...
But this one I'm like, real serious about.
Okay.
So I'm going to devote an hour every day to practice.
Wow.
That seems like a lot.
At least a little bit of practice every day, maybe not a no.
But I've got to practice every day.
I have to because that's the key.
It's a practice.
Right.
True.
And I got to carry around my drumsticks so that I can just practice where I can...
You need to get a practice drum pad.
Have you seen those?
No.
So it's just a little disc, but it lets you practice...
Ooh.
Yeah, drum rhythms in kind of a muted way.
Okay.
I need that.
I think my family is not stoked about me learning...
I'm into it.
To play.
I think Emory is not stoked about it.
Yeah.
They've got one on a little stand that you can practice with.
Okay.
They're not super expensive.
But yeah, then you carry that around with you and then you can...
You know...
I just don't...
Here's the thing.
When things start to get too hard for me, then I quit.
I bail.
I don't want to quit this.
Then don't.
I don't want to.
Okay, then don't.
I want to really learn how to play.
Yeah.
I'm committed.
Okay.
Well, I'm excited for you.
I think it's cool.
I think it's cool.
It's fun to see...
Oh, look.
And they make these little drumstick dampeners that you can put on the end of your drumsticks.
Little silicone, little booties.
Okay.
So it's not so loud.
Yeah.
So that you can practice on the pad wherever you go.
What were you going to say?
I don't even...
You said it's fun to...
I don't even...
It's fun to watch you.
Is it?
Do I look cool?
Oh, the coolest.
So cool.
It's my main mission in life is to just look cool.
Yeah?
Yeah, clearly.
I look cool at every turn.
Turn it.
You do.
You posted a picture on our Facebook and Instagram of yourself behind the kit.
You look cool.
Thank you, Josh.
I know I look cool.
Oh, yeah.
I got my little red shoes on.
Right.
I asked people for some tips and there was a lot of people that gave some big tips.
Okay.
Watch a lot of drummy, though, they said.
Yeah.
Just what you've been doing on YouTube, yeah?
Don't ignore the fundamentals, protect your ears.
Sure.
So...
How do you feel about the protect your ears thing?
Because I don't think you're hitting it that hard.
I don't think you're wailing on the kit yet.
Not yet.
But I play it's a little bit louder.
I don't think I'm wailing yet.
Yeah.
Yeah, yours is super loud, but I'm not hitting quite so hard.
Yeah.
You also...
But I will be.
I'll be wailing soon, just to wait.
Oh, yeah.
Oh, I know.
You said to me.
Who is that wailing on the drums?
Because I was playing the ukulele.
I was playing the drums.
I was doing all kinds of fun little things yesterday and you said to me, what is up with
you?
How come you can do this?
You just go to everything.
That's not true.
You are.
No.
Yes.
No?
Like, here I am.
I'm trying to keep like, because you have to, like, you know, like, hit the base and hit
this nail and I'm trying to figure it out.
I'm like, this is hard.
And you sit down and you're like, let me have a turn.
And you're like, just hammering out stuff.
But listen, I have an unfair advantage.
My cousin took drum lessons when I was a kid.
I was a little kid and he had a drum kit and I admired that.
And when we would go over to my aunt and uncle's house and he was downstairs in the basement
playing his drums and I got a chance to sit down and he showed me a couple of things.
I'm doing exactly what he showed me when I was 10.
Okay.
So I've been around a drum kit a little bit, not like consistently and I certainly am no
drummer.
But I can do like a rhythm thing and that's fine.
But I found that the faster I play it, the better it sounds.
Sort of like when you sing.
The louder you sing, the better it sounds.
Yeah.
You don't have to be a on pitch.
You just have to be loud.
Exactly.
Yeah, okay.
But it actually helped me count better and I made fewer mistakes when I played it faster,
which I thought was kind of interesting.
Because if I could do any style of drumming, like do you have a style you want to play?
Like you want to play jazz?
No.
Stat, tat, tat, tat, tat, tat, tat.
Some of that.
What kind of drumming do you want to do?
Like punk rock.
That's what I want to do.
It's so fast though.
It's so fast and it's just loud and obnoxious.
Yeah.
It's kind of what I want to do.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I just want to punk rock it, man.
Okay.
Like you got to listen to some punk rock drums because you're going to go whoa.
Oh, I have listened to punk rock drums.
Or if you just listen to like some all indie kind of drumming.
Both.
I've listened to both.
I know you have.
I'm not saying you're not cool.
So settle down.
I'm saying there's like a real urgency to like real punk rock drumming.
It's very fast.
We're going to get to the end.
And the songs are like two minutes long and they just go like, okay, that one's done.
Next one.
Same drumming.
Or do you want to do like metal drumming and get the double kick pedal thing going?
I do like it.
It's pretty cool.
I do like a double kick pedal.
Yeah.
I don't know yet.
I don't know what my style is right now.
You've got to just got to do the fundamentals and you'll find your art later.
Yeah.
Right now it's just like a basic one and two and three.
And let's add the snare.
Yeah.
Yeah.
That's what it sounds like.
You're going to get there.
It'll be fun.
I'm excited.
I'm going to be a drummer.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah.
Do you have like, are you feeling a little bit sad because of summer regret?
No.
Oh.
No.
One, summer isn't over.
Two, you can do a bunch of stuff in the fall, fishing picks up in the fall.
You can still camp.
I have no regrets.
Okay.
You do this every year.
I do this every year.
You do this every season.
You do this every day.
I should have made more of today.
And it's like, dude, relax.
Chin up.
Chill out.
Give yourself a little bit of grace.
Okay.
I just think about like, oh, it went so fast.
Am I having all these big ideas of things I wanted to do?
Stop there.
I wanted to go camping more.
I want to go swimming more.
Right.
Guess what you can still do?
I love that.
Swim.
Yeah.
I still can.
Right.
Okay.
Wow.
I was looking at the weather.
Oh, okay.
Something you can control.
That's good.
Just wanted to see what it looked like today.
Chill.
I was in training.
It's supposed to be rainy.
Yeah.
You're not camping today.
No, I'm not camping today, but I thought I could go swimming today, but not if it's raining.
We have another trip this weekend.
We're talking about another trip next weekend that are not camping because there's other
things to do.
Yeah.
And I told you in the early, early spring, I
said we need to put camping trips on the calendar.
You said we got to put the camping trips on the calendar first.
Correct.
So we have those already planned.
And then everything else could just be feeling because what you do inevitably is you go,
oh, well, this thing's coming up this weekend and this thing's happening this weekend and
all this other stuff ends up on the calendar that fills all the camping time.
But it's not just.
And then you go, we didn't even camp enough.
And it's not.
It's just stuff.
It's just life that gets in the way.
I get it.
It's not that I'm purposely trying to avoid camping.
I understand.
We've only taken our trailer out once this year.
I know.
Memorial day.
But we've got plans for Labor Day.
So we got the end caps.
That's not even really camping.
I understand.
Like we haven't even gone to the woods.
I have.
I know.
I have not.
I've been in the woods for a lot.
It makes me really sad.
I need to go to the woods.
I need some quiet.
That's nice.
I know.
I had to do a lot of walking to get there.
Oh, that's not true.
I went to the woods.
We went on a high kick.
We went on a little backpacking trip.
Yeah, I know.
I was in the woods.
You did an overnighter.
I know.
But I need more.
I know more of the woods.
I agree.
I like the woods.
True.
Okay.
It's not over yet.
You made the wilderness.
Yeah.
The forest.
The woods.
Yeah.
My brother and I was making fun of me.
What you call it the woods?
Because it's the woods.
It's the woods.
I'm going to the woods, man.
What are you talking about?
So everyone calls it.
I know.
You want to go to the woods?
I think the reason he doesn't call it that is because for years he's worked around like
what's the word I'm looking for?
Like a cabinet shop.
He's working shop.
He's worked in a woodworking shop.
So when he hears woods, he's like, no, I got woods in a rack over here.
That's where the woods are.
So he doesn't think about the forest as the woods.
He's like, that's the wilderness.
It's the woods.
Yeah.
You could go to his woodshed and be like, look at all this altar.
Yeah.
Look at all these woods.
Boy, am I in the woods?
Yeah.
It's all there is to see his woods.
That was all there.
All there is to see.
I could see him thinking about that.
I put that one together.
That was a good one.
Anyway, we've got to prioritize these things or else they get lost.
I know.
And that's what's happened.
I know.
Again, this year, this has been multiple years of this conversation where I go, if we're
going to camp and be serious about it, we have to prioritize that on the weekends.
We have to go, nope, we're camping.
And then when something comes up and you go, oh, this is happening.
No, we're camping that weekend.
Okay.
But it never happens.
I know, Josh.
The calendar gets filled every weekend with something else.
Something else.
I know.
I'm having summer regret.
I'm not alone.
There's a lot of people that are having summer regret.
Oh, for sure.
Oh, I get it.
I do understand.
Our daughter tells us every day.
I know.
I didn't do anything on summer.
We didn't go to roaring springs.
We didn't go to the good.
Yeah.
There's a two main complaints.
Yeah.
Because she just wants to go to those big water slides and rollercoaster.
Yeah.
I feel too old for that.
I'm not trying to say I don't have like an inner child.
I'm just saying my body doesn't react well to the rollercoasters like it used to.
I know, but you still have a child who's like, hey, these are my prime days.
Don't.
Let's be clear.
She's 16, right?
Yeah.
Look, it's isn't like she's going to be 40 tomorrow.
No, I understand.
Like, and I don't like to do it because I don't like to compare the childhoods.
But like, it's real easy to go, I don't do any of this stuff.
I was a kid.
We were lucky if we got to go there like once every five years.
What's that thing?
You said the other day you said, if if if I was my kid, if I was the same age as my kids,
I would look at my kids and go, those kids are rich.
Yeah.
No kid.
That's the best kids are doing lots of cool things that I'm not doing.
Right.
And are they all they are?
My summer was just go outside.
Yeah, ride your bike until it's dinner time.
Yeah.
So go outside and board an amazing terrible summer.
Go outside.
You have an terrible summer because you're loafing around on a couch.
Go outside.
Do something.
Intertain yourself.
You have a driver's license.
You're 16.
Go do something.
Yeah.
Don't blame me for your bad summer.
Go outside.
What do you mean?
I'm having a bad summer.
We didn't do anything.
I don't have I don't have summer regrets.
Okay.
You made me there.
I have more weekends that I want to spend doing things.
We have a furnace.
We can camp anytime.
It can be cold outside.
It doesn't matter.
Be warm in the trailer.
You'll be fine.
We can do camp fires.
Once the heat breaks and things start mellowing out and the wildfire risk isn't very extreme
then you can enjoy the outside a little better.
Okay.
It's all good.
That summer, summer stretch into the fall.
This is why we need each other.
Oh, is that right?
Yeah.
You're out here panicking.
I'm like, what are you worried about?
You know what else happens?
After Labor Day, a bunch of people are like, yeah, put the trailer away.
Summer's over and then all the campsites are available.
That's true, Josh.
You see?
Don't say that too loud.
Then everybody will be like, oh, go on camp after Labor Day.
People do.
There are other people there.
There are just fewer people because they're like, nah, it's done.
Time to get ready for fall.
Football's back on.
Football?
I got to spend the, if I leave, I'll miss football.
You know, see ya.
I'm out.
What are you convinced that people are pretending to enjoy?
I saw this online.
Some of the responses are.
Mushrooms.
Oh, no way, dude.
I love mushrooms.
No, you're pretending.
You're trying to be cool.
I'm not.
You're like, look how cool I am with my mushrooms.
No.
No.
I don't think anyone has ever been like, that is so cool that you eat mushrooms.
I don't think anyone has ever said that.
I love mushrooms.
I genuinely do.
No, no pretence here.
I'm not.
I'm not.
I'm missing nothing.
You know what?
I think people are pretending to enjoy running.
Do you think so?
Yes.
There's no way you're having a good time.
Oh, no.
That's awful.
Have you ever seen a runner that looks at me?
I've ran across country.
Yeah, it's fine.
No, they look miserable.
And then I work with a couple of runners and all they do is come out.
I'm not.
I'm not.
I'm missing nothing.
You know what?
I think people are pretending to enjoy running.
Do you think so?
Yes.
There's no way you're having a good time.
Oh, no.
That's awful.
You're not playing about how hard it is.
Stop doing it.
They almost died.
They went on like a super ultra marathon and they almost died.
And I was like, well, you did that in your free time.
You paid to be that miserable.
Yeah.
How is that enjoyable?
They're not making that up.
Now mushrooms.
Literally yuck.
Nobody in their right mind is like, that looks edible.
Nobody in their right mind is like, you know what?
I'm going to put some veer damage on my body today by putting it through the ringer.
Yeah.
People do that every day.
They go to the gym and they're like, I'm going to lift heavy stuff till it hurts.
No.
Good for you.
You know what I'm going to do?
Not that.
Not that.
No.
I'm just going to be fat and lazy.
That's right.
You know, but he got time for that.
So everything else you can think of?
Things people pretend to enjoy.
Yeah.
Um.
I don't know.
Gender reveal parties.
Oh, they're awful.
Ew.
Oh.
Whoever started that trend.
I mean, it's been around for a while.
But yuck.
Why?
We got to have another party.
I just love a party.
I like parties.
Yeah.
I don't mind a party.
I need another reason to have a party.
We'll talk it together and decide what do we think and then we'll find out for real.
I like when they fail though.
I like to gender reveal fails.
They make me look as you know if nobody gets her.
I don't want people to be hurt.
No, right.
But when it's like the balloon floated away and no one found out before it like went away and they're like, oh no.
Oh, we're never going to know.
Yeah.
Another thing I read was like dance for titles.
Oh.
I don't think people's pretending to enjoy those.
Everybody knows how miserable those are.
If you've ever been to a three hour dance for titles.
Yes, multiple.
I went to a lot of them.
And here's the part that always made me craziest.
The editing.
The audio editing is so bad.
I actually enjoyed that part because it made you so miserable.
I don't know how the dancers could keep in step like because they're one two three four.
Whatever their count is, right?
To eight or whatever they do.
And five, six, seven, eight like that, right?
How are they keeping in step when the edits are not on beat and so awkward?
Like I would lose my mind.
I do.
I lose my mind.
We haven't been to a dance for a long time, but I do.
Because you, that's what you do for a living and you're good at editing music.
It's bad.
That I always would be like, oh, here we go.
Josh is going to hate this.
We got to cut it down to 90 seconds.
How are we going to do it?
Just take out the middle.
It doesn't matter if they mash up together.
That's good, Josh.
I'm just saying like people waking up early is on the list.
Waking up early.
No one likes that.
I actually don't mind waking up early.
I like being awake early.
I don't like waking up early.
Okay, that's fair.
Don't, you know what I mean?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Like once I'm up and moving and things are going to the days on a roll, I'm like, okay, this is fine.
But I'll tell you, waking up early is for the dogs.
And they don't even do it.
It's for the birds.
It's for the dogs.
Yeah, the dogs.
Small talk.
Nobody likes small talk.
I don't think anybody pretends to like that though.
I just love meeting new people.
How's the weather?
Yeah.
Tell me if I'm living here.
Yeah.
Oh, can't wait.
I just love going to a group setting with a bunch of people I have to network with.
Yay.
Let's get to the meat and potatoes.
Yeah, can we just go like we're all here for business transaction, right?
Like let's just be real.
None of our relationships are going to be deeper than what we need transactionally.
So hello fellow members of this club.
Here's what it means for you.
This is the deal.
What do you need for me?
We're all here to exchange pleasantries and money.
So let's just get it over with.
Ready?
Everybody in agreement?
Awesome.
Put your hand in the circle.
Let's just not all be like fake nice.
Let's just because there's no time for this.
Imagine how much you can get done if you took out all that stuff.
Take out all that social business instead.
Just be like, here's the deal.
We're all going to exchange money so that we can all support each other's programs.
You ready?
Here we go.
What do you need?
Cool.
Who's going to step up and do it?
Awesome.
Great.
I need this.
Who's got?
Cool.
You need that.
I got you.
Let's go.
And then everybody just shifts the money around and then we leave the meeting.
I like that better.
That's it.
I like it.
Let's do it.
We love lunch.
All right.
Business done.
Eat your salad.
Let's go.
Thank you.
Mushrooms.
There's mushrooms.
Oh.
Why?
I saw a video yesterday and I said, oh, we got to do this.
And you quickly shot down that idea.
Yeah, because I know it's going to fail and not listen.
This is one of those physical challenge trends that will fail.
Okay, but even if it fails, it's still going to fail.
If it fails, I die.
You do not die.
You do not die.
What's the task?
What's the task?
The task is you get to a place in your house where it feels like there is like on your
stairwell.
So in our house, for example, to paint you a picture, there's stairs and then there's
like a land like at the living room.
There's like a house where it looks the stairwell and then I would be over the, in,
I'd be standing in the living room overlooking the staircase and then you would be dangling
and I would try to hoist you up.
And here's where it fails.
No, it's not going to fail.
Bro, all you need is the confidence to try a willingness to try a confidence to succeed
and a support system and you are offering none of those.
You're not even willing to try and you're not going to die.
I've seen you try to carry the dog food bag.
You're not going to hold me up.
Yes, I am.
No.
You're a person, not dog food.
You're my person.
I won't let you down.
Josh, I fall late, fall.
You got to trust me.
You have no faith in me.
Listen to me.
This isn't about trust.
This is about I've moved furniture with you.
Here is not you.
Dude.
The idea is there's zero chance.
You're lifting me out of that situation.
The idea is that you save.
It's the idea that you're falling off a cliff and I have to rescue you from the cliff.
You're not.
You won't even try.
Throw me a rope so I can tie a bowline and you can try to pull me up with a couple of
pulley systems in a car, maybe.
I, okay, listen, I've got no upper body strength.
I don't.
So I wouldn't be able to hoist you up by my arms, but I could probably do it with my legs.
Explain that.
What strange, contorted position are you in to be able to throw me a leg over a cliff?
I would sit on the ledge.
No, you're done.
You have two few points of contact you're going over the edge.
No, I did.
Yeah, wait, dude, let us give it a shot.
Let's try it.
I'm not going to have us both get injured in the stairwell at home.
You won't even try.
No, because I know the outcome.
Okay, I'm going to try it with Emory then.
Yeah, she weighs a fourth of what I do.
Doesn't matter.
I won't let you fall.
Josh.
No, no, no, we're not doing whatever viral video thing you found and think you're capable
of.
I'm not, I'm not going to get injured in the stairwell or off of a cliff.
Just let me go.
I'm done.
I fell off the cliff.
Forget about it.
Do you want to try it with me?
Like not particularly.
I have a bad elbow.
It's not you.
It's me.
I just don't want to hurt my arm more.
Fine.
I never get to have it any fun.
What?
Never?
You tried picking me up off the couch.
You tried yesterday.
You tried pulling my leg off the bed for some reason because you were bored and you
were pulling and pulling and pulling.
You barely moved me.
You're going to lift me over the ledge.
You're a brick.
No kidding.
No kidding.
No kidding.
How else am I going to get some upper body strength if I don't try and practice?
We don't practice with me.
Practice is something lighter weight.
No, we have.
Until you build up the strength.
I have to practice with you every day.
No.
No.
No.
No.
We're not doing this.
Find something else.
Just settle down.
You're doing a lot of breathing over there about something that doesn't matter.
I'm not going near cliffs anytime soon.
So we don't need to practice this skill.
One of these days we're going to find ourselves on a cliff and you're going to get lost
forever.
And I'm going to say it's because we didn't practice.
This is your fault.
This is your fault.
Okay.
I want you to know that.
I saw another video challenge on the internet.
What's this one?
This one.
[Laughs]
Quit, quit with the internet.
Here we are.
Here we are.
Give you the internet was a bad idea.
What, what is this one?
This one is, it's a, how much do you trust your partner?
We did one of these.
Oh, God.
A couple of years ago there was a shoe game where you had like a cup on your head and I had
to throw a shoe.
Yeah, and you broke my phone.
Oh, no.
I did not break your phone.
You dropped your phone.
That's all on you, bud.
What caused me to drop the phone?
The shoe falling through the air.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I think you intentionally planned that because you wanted a new phone and you got a new phone.
The phone I have now.
I think that was your intention.
I do for a new phone.
Let's play this challenge.
Is this what you had me do yesterday?
Yeah, yeah.
With the truck.
You've already done your part.
Now I have to do my part.
Yeah, I'm good.
You don't trust me.
You don't have depth perception.
The challenge is.
I've driven with you.
Here's the thing.
You're not going to hit me.
You're going to stop a mile away.
No.
You have no idea where the front of your car is.
I know right where the front of my truck is and I prove that.
The challenge, they don't even know the challenge yet.
Who's that?
The listeners.
Oh, okay.
The challenge is that you stand in front, you stand on the road and then your partner has
to drive to see how close they can get without hitting you.
Yeah.
You got real close.
That's because I know where the front of my truck is.
Every time I'm parking, you go, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
I'm like, I know where the front of my truck is.
I'm good to go.
It's okay.
I got a little bit nervous.
I trusted you.
I absolutely did.
Yeah.
But I stood there and I went, whoo, whoo, whoo.
Yeah, I know.
I got it.
In the video, you go.
I get nervous.
So today, are you supposed to do this thing where you try to park close to me?
Well, yeah, I have to do my part.
You will either hit me.
No.
Or stop a million miles away.
But one of these two things is going to happen.
I don't think you're going to be, I got close.
You're either going to be too close and hit me or you're going to be way off.
I'm not going to hit you for a reason.
The reason you'll hit me is because you know in your head that you're going to stop away
too short.
And so you're going to be like, I have to get closer.
And then you're going to, you're going to hit me.
No, it's going to be, I'll tell you what, it is, you got like, you just got not gas because
that meant that you were going fast, but you put your foot on the gas a little bit and
you went the whole way and then stopped.
Yeah.
What I'm going to do probably more than likely is gas breaks.
Inch inch inch.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So you should, you should only get so many of those before you have to say I'm done.
Okay.
How many should I get?
Like three.
Okay.
Okay.
Two probably.
Okay.
I did it in one.
Yeah.
Cause I know where the front of my truck is.
We know, Josh.
I'm trying to, I know we know, but do you know?
Because I don't think you know, like every time I'm trying to turn in as tight, I get
an out of a parking spot, you're like, you're going to hit that.
I'm like, I've got a mile.
You're right that I don't have any depth perception.
Yeah.
It's not.
When it comes to where the front and back of your car are and our daughter has the same
thing, but I, she gets stressed out, back and out of spots because she's like, I don't
know where the back of my car is.
She wanted to put a flag on the back of her.
Something.
I don't know what's going to work.
I mean, there's the back of it.
It's right there behind you.
Okay.
Can I try at least?
Sure.
We could do it after the show today in the parking lot.
You don't trust me at all.
Yeah.
I'm just, I'm not getting where we at on our deductible.
Pretty good.
Yeah.
Oh, we've met it.
Okay.
Good.
I just need to know where I'm going to be once I'm flying as a pancake.
Zero trusted me.
Zero.
I'm not one.
Gonna let you fall.
Oh, you're going back to the cliff thing.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Two.
I'm not going to hit you.
Those are two things you can be sure of.
If somebody goes, Josh, what can you be sure of?
One, Chantel's not going to let me fall.
Two.
Chantel's not going to hit me.
And then they'd say, okay, thank you.
That's all I needed.
It's, why do you look so nervous?
I've been run over before.
You are.
Would you rather this or that?
Would you rather clean up a toddler's messy bedroom or a teenager's messy bedroom?
Toddler.
That's easy.
So easy.
So easy.
Why?
Because the toddler's room is messy with toys.
Yeah.
And that's pretty much it.
You got to clean up the toys.
Some random sticky substances perhaps.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Perhaps some random hand prints on walls and stuff.
But when it comes to just like cleanup, it's just going to be put the toys back in the baskets.
And that I can handle.
Maybe some socks that need to go into the laundry basket.
But nothing, it's going to be easy.
Yeah.
Teenagers.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Way more dirty clothes, plates, cups, soda bottles, cans, it's a disaster.
Plus, here's the thing.
If you throw something away accidentally from a toddler, they might not remember the thing
that you threw away.
But if you do something, if you misstep in any way in a teenager's room, watch out.
How dare you touch my stuff?
This one's too easy.
I'm picking toddler.
I am too.
It's the stuff that you have to clean up is so much easier.
Most of it's really durable so you can kind of just chuck it into the baskets.
I don't have to worry about breaking something.
Yeah.
Teenager rooms gross.
You can clean your own room.
You're a teenager.
Get your room clean.
Yeah.
Get a garbage bag and just throw it all in there.
Yeah.
I don't want to.
I don't.
I'm not touching a teenager's bedroom with a 10 foot pole.
No way.
But please give me my dishes back.
Yeah.
That'd be nice.
Also, where's the bag of chips?
In your room?
Yeah.
That's what I'm asking.
Where did it go?
Is it in your car?
Oh, I'll look today.
Before you go, I might want to snack on those today.
It'll work.
Yeah.
You sent me a text yesterday.
Yeah.
I'm missing a bag of chips.
I said, did you throw that away?
I don't know.
No.
I'm out.
I'm out.
I probably did.
Did you throw away that bag of crumbled up chips?
That's right.
And I said, I might have crumbled up chips.
You want me to keep a bag of crumbled up chips?
Why do you want to eat those?
I crumbled them on purpose.
For what purpose?
For backpacking.
And then you eat them with your spoon or your sport.
And you're saying, well, that's a weird thing.
Is that what you're saying?
And then I'm going to say, wins last time I wash my hands on trail.
I'm going to eat them with these dogs.
Pull up the chips and eat them with your sport.
Then you don't have dirty hands in your bag chip.
Chip bag.
You know?
Clfer.
Yeah.
Backpacking hack.
Now you know.
Yeah, but why do you still need them now?
I want to snack on those chips.
And I thought you'd throw them away because I think you would look at the bag and go, this
is just crumbs and throw it out.
But they were smashed on purpose.
I might have thrown those away.
No, look at how am I supposed to know that I was supposed to keep those?
Why do you throw away my stuff?
It happens regularly.
There's a good handful of times a year where I go, where's that thing?
And you go, I didn't know you wanted that.
And I go, well, I don't need more.
A bag of crumbled up chips.
I'm sorry.
I didn't know that I'll go look at it.
They might be in my car.
End the break.
We're cleaning up the toddler room.
That's where this started.
All right.
Would you rather start that?
Do you remember when you started in college, what was some of your big stressors?
Math.
Okay, math.
Okay.
What?
I get that.
I understand.
Math was a stressor probably in high school before that.
Yeah.
Okay.
I just math in general, I suppose, but was there anything else about the classes that had
you worried or stressed or anything?
Were you worried about grades?
No, not really.
You weren't super like, I got to be on the Dean's list.
Like you didn't, you didn't stress out about that kind of stuff.
No, I didn't care about that.
As long as I passed, I was solid.
So if they removed the grade system and it was only a pass fail, would that have been
better or would that have made any difference?
I don't think that would have made any difference for me.
Because if I showed up and did the assignments and passed, great, which is what I did, except
when it came to math.
What'd you do there?
I showed up and I took the tests and I got sad when I got my grade back.
Okay.
University of Michigan announced that for their freshman this year, they're not going
to do letter grades.
They're only going to do pass fails.
They said it's for mental health because they think that having the stress of grades and
letter grades is a lot for the students.
And so they said, we're just going to get rid of it.
And instead, we're just going to do pass fail.
It's a pilot program.
They're testing out.
Interesting.
Yeah.
I wonder if other schools will take suit or--
I think this will be interesting to see what happens.
I mean, I like that, you know, there's a lot of stuff that's going on your first year
of college.
You're trying to figure out the social thing.
You're trying to figure out how to live on your own.
You're trying to figure out--
I mean, there's a lot going on.
There's a lot going on.
And schools part of that mix and having to have school as part of that mix of trying
to figure out the real world.
And also worrying about grades is a lot of stress.
And so they said, we are going to eliminate a little bit of that by not making you worry
about whether you're getting an A, B, C, D.
If you pass, if you fail, you get no credit and you have to take the class again or whatever.
What are the reactions?
This is the first year.
I haven't heard anything.
No, I know, but are people upset or are they like, cool?
I would think people are kind of cool.
There's some older people who are arguing that it's not helping students because it's not
preparing them for the real world after school where there is actual accountability.
One older person said, I'm not sure the bosses will do the same.
They're first job and by helping them acclimate, we mean delaying, acclimating to an amount
of time equal to the exactly one semester.
So everything changes after this, so why do it is kind of their thing?
Look, they may end up just doing it all the way through.
Does it, does it, I mean, I know people would look at your college transcript perhaps,
like when you were getting hired, I've never seen that.
Like if you have a degree, they go, you have a degree, right?
Like you earned the degree.
They don't go, oh, but did you get all A's to earn this degree?
Right.
Like do you have the degree premium?
You've degree plus?
Well, and that's, if you're at a job, it's not like you're getting graded at your job.
You show up, you do your work or you don't and you're let go.
Yeah, right?
It's kind of a pass fail at work.
Kind of, yeah, I don't know.
That's interesting, but I don't know.
pressure, they say. They were leaving academic pressure to help the freshmen adjust.
Well, I just know that if this had been the standard when I was in college, I would have been a big
old fail. You think so, just in math? Yeah. When it came to math. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, it was a
math. Everything else you did fine? I did fine at everything else. Yeah, kayak and class.
Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, hold on. I knew you took a class, but you can't, you can't put that up there. I was no good of math, but I let me tell you, I learned out of kayak. No, that your electives don't count.
Let's keep it, let's keep it in the right lane. Let me tell you that I actually failed the kayak in class because you couldn't roll over because I couldn't do a barrel roll. It was too stressful, and I
had been sick the first day, so I missed all of the instruction and it was moving too fast. They couldn't, and I also couldn't swim, and it was too stressed out, and so I dropped the class. But Jen, you took a swimming class.
Then I took a swimming class, and I passed the swimming class, and now I know how to swim. So now go do the kayaking class again. I don't want you. Why? Because then I don't want to do barrel rolls. Oh, you'll do great. You just have to learn body position and how you use your paddle to throw yourself back over.
I'll just get a kayak that doesn't flip over so easily, which I already have done.
But what, put on the kayak skirt and the life jacket and the helmet and do a white water style.
No, good. You don't want to go white water, kayaking? What if that's your thing?
Like now that you know how to swim, what if that's your thing?
No, I don't think it is. I don't think it is. So the two classes that I distinctly remember failing, math and kayaking.
Well, do you know that I initially had signed up to take a yoga class?
Yeah. And my friends were all taking a kayaking class, and they convinced me to drop out of my yoga class.
You would have loved yoga. And I stressed every day. I was like, I have kayaking in an hour.
You would have loved yoga. I know I would have. You should have said no.
It was very bad for my mental health.
I'm not doing this. I'm going to yoga. Couldn't you have switched mid, like,
No, it's too late. You can't switch classes. I don't know how it works.
It's not like when you're like weeks and weeks in. I bet you could.
No, you can't. Weeks and weeks in. How many weeks and weeks in?
It was like three or four. That's not that long.
Josh. Talk to the councilor. Just your schedule. Come on.
Being an adult is the real world. I made it. They said you're too far in. You can't.
They didn't say that. Josh. You didn't ask.
They probably would have been like, yeah, we're looking at yoga right away.
There's just rules, dude. It's different from to fry.
Wow, slow down. Don't attack my school.
You dropped out of that school. Don't attack the school I dropped out of.
