Welcome back to Check the Net Impact eighty nine FM's men's and women's college basketball podcast. I'm your host, Colin Pearson. I'm joined today by the future of this podcast, Tylee, Eli Porter, and Josh.
Speaker 2:No. Colin, I
Speaker 1:I Because I'm graduating on Friday or Saturday.
Speaker 2:Can't even remember when he's graduating. You didn't get
Speaker 3:it right.
Speaker 1:Jeez. Can't even remember. It's been a very long week, folks. A very long semester.
Speaker 4:How long's last episode?
Speaker 1:Yeah. It's I was doing the math earlier today. I have done 63 episodes of this podcast.
Speaker 4:Holy cow.
Speaker 1:Gagged. I have been on it since literally it started. And
Speaker 4:And that means that it's over now.
Speaker 3:This this is actually the last episode.
Speaker 2:We're ending mid season.
Speaker 1:Did the math. I've been I have recordings on Spotify for more than sixty hours of podcast, which That's feels like a a lot of all of us talking That's a lot of my voice that I have gone through and edited, and that, you know, I will not be going back through at any point until I'm like 52 or something. Period. But yeah, should we get into basketball?
Speaker 2:I mean, I guess. And I think it'll make me feel better if we do.
Speaker 1:Yeah, let's do it. Women's basketball, let's jump right in. Number 16, USC. Number 21, Washington. They faced off.
Speaker 1:USC won that one fifty nine to 50, and frankly, these two teams played like the exact game we expected from them. Lot of good, of bad. What do we got? He did end
Speaker 3:up saying it.
Speaker 2:I because the Washington went into this game undefeated. Correct?
Speaker 5:Correct. That is
Speaker 2:I'm I mean I'm not gonna lie usc's kind of been battered a bit miss yeah just because of their schedule just because their schedule so I was kind of expecting Washington to come in and show something special but I guess that's what's clearly not the case.
Speaker 1:It was a nine point game. It wasn't anything was all a
Speaker 2:shameful. Fifty nine fifty game.
Speaker 1:It was all defense.
Speaker 2:Yeah, or just or bad shooting.
Speaker 1:Well, it was a combination. I'm sure.
Speaker 4:Yeah. I mean, Avery Howell, even though she probably didn't get the result she wanted in her homecoming game after transferring from USC to Washington last year, she still got a double double. She put up 16, she grabbed 13 rebounds. Still a great game for her. USC missed 10 of their 21 free throws and still won by nine.
Speaker 2:Josh?
Speaker 4:Yeah. I don't know.
Speaker 3:I don't know how that's possible, but fair enough. But it is possible because Jazzy Davidson's a star. Mhmm.
Speaker 4:He is
Speaker 3:a star and when they get the chance to run Juju and her next season or I it'll be fun to watch. Twenty two and twelve in this one, just an unreal performance. She's actually the only person on the USC team that made a three point shot.
Speaker 1:Yay. I'm not cheering.
Speaker 3:I was saying I'm not cheering for that because the entire team went two of 17 from the three three balls.
Speaker 5:Sounds familiar? Mhmm.
Speaker 4:I haven't been there.
Speaker 3:We'll get to that later. But USC also did it with rebounding. They had 50 rebounds to Washington 38. Again, despite shooting 11 of 21 from the free throw line, they still managed to pull out a nine point win against Washington on the road.
Speaker 2:Dang. On a road. On the road
Speaker 4:is a
Speaker 5:So this game probably should have been less close than it was.
Speaker 4:Yeah. Probably.
Speaker 1:Hey, fair enough. Let's hop over to Oregon UCLA. UCLA won this one, eighty to 59, and Lauren Bettsman just Yeah. Going crazy once again.
Speaker 4:I mean, we've been worried about her for a couple weeks.
Speaker 2:Mhmm.
Speaker 4:Because she was not hitting double digits, but she is back like she never left. 24 points, 14 rebounds, five blocks.
Speaker 1:Against Oregon. You know, that's That
Speaker 4:was a lot of undefeated.
Speaker 1:They were undefeated at that That's
Speaker 3:why I picked them
Speaker 4:last week.
Speaker 1:Not a
Speaker 4:great weekend for the Pacific Northwest schools.
Speaker 5:No. I mean, I think, you know, UCLA's had a bit of a struggle, like, their wins haven't been super clean, but I think they're showing that they are here to compete for the Big 10.
Speaker 1:Yeah. They're ranked four for a reason.
Speaker 2:Oh, yeah. And and Lauren Betts and the Big 10 is that you know what to expect. Like, that's that's their comfort zone. So they're gonna they're gonna be able to to adapt better and play well within conference. So I can I predict going forward, she's gonna keep being extremely consistent and so is UCLA as a whole?
Speaker 1:Yeah. Absolutely. Hopping over to number 11 UNC versus number two Texas. We had seventy nine sixty four score for Texas won that one. Again, you know, number two seed Texas looks really, really good.
Speaker 2:I
Speaker 1:worry about Texas, though. I worry a little bit more than any of those other top teams because they don't have any depth.
Speaker 2:Mhmm.
Speaker 1:They played Jordan Lee and Rory Harmon for all forty minutes of that game
Speaker 2:Yeah, yeah, and you really need Rory Harmon out there absolutely I mean I mean she's insane. She is she's a leader. She's the point guard I mean she's running that offense and without her
Speaker 1:only one yes running that offense Yeah, it's
Speaker 2:gonna be it would be a big struggle so yeah, and I
Speaker 1:mean we didn't even get to see a chance or get a chance to see Without Rory Harmon what they would look like against the top team because she just never came out of the game. I I worry a little bit about wear and tear there especially going into an SEC schedule.
Speaker 4:Yeah, I and I mean only having a seven player rotation overall looks really unsustainable, but we've been saying that for a couple weeks, and they
Speaker 2:It's sustaining.
Speaker 4:They still beat South Carolina, so
Speaker 1:It's sustainable up until about February usually Mhmm. Is the issue. Yeah. Once February comes around, once March comes around, it gets really rough if you're playing, you know, back to back games, you know, one day separation in March for SEC championship, for March Madness. That's where wear and tear really takes a toll.
Speaker 4:Yeah. I mean,
Speaker 5:we saw what happened last year with Juju Watkins and USC, right? Yeah. Absolutely. You know, you don't have depth. Your star player goes out.
Speaker 5:Yeah. Here's the season.
Speaker 4:Problem.
Speaker 1:The the
Speaker 4:Big problem.
Speaker 3:The big thing in this one was just UNC could not stop turning the ball over compared to Texas. 20 to eight in terms of turnovers. And if you're gonna turn the ball over against a really good Texas team, you're not gonna win the basketball game.
Speaker 1:No. Not a chance. But I do love
Speaker 3:that Madison Booker did it from the stripe. I believe she went 10 of 11 from the stripe
Speaker 4:Nice.
Speaker 3:When she got there. And the old school way is still kind of the best way to do it is just get drawing fouls, go into the paint, and getting your free throws. That's in the modern way of shooting threes and all that. It's still Mhmm. The most fundamental and easiest way is to draw fouls from the paint, dry, go to the hole, and then if you get fouled, go to the free throw line and just take your time and knock down the easy shots.
Speaker 3:It's simple. Texas Texas took advantage of it.
Speaker 4:Yeah. And that's something both of these teams have really invested in. Neither of them really shoot the three ball all that much. UNC only took 11 and only made two, and Texas only took nine three pointers, making four. So
Speaker 2:Honestly, like, I I really enjoy watching Madison Booker especially play because she does a lot of she shoots a lot from mid range, especially the, like, mid range corners and, like, though like, mid the mid your mid range shooting is very underutilized. It's, like especially on the men's side. The women's side, I feel like they take a lot more within a lot more shots within the arc, but it's still really underutilized in comparison to three pointers and stuff like that. So I I can appreciate it.
Speaker 4:I I think a smart possession focused two point jumper can be one of the most beautiful and technical shots on basketball.
Speaker 2:Oh, yeah. And that's and why and women's basketball is full of that. Yeah. And that's why it's great.
Speaker 4:And that's why it's awesome. So
Speaker 1:Alright. Should we jump into some of the mid majors? Yes.
Speaker 4:Let's do
Speaker 1:it. Alright. One of the games of the week, Gonzaga versus UC Davis. Zags won that 80 three-seventy two, not a terrible surprise.
Speaker 2:Solid game though.
Speaker 1:But a solid game, especially Now here's the team that's know what UC see Davis. In Yeah.
Speaker 4:The Bulldogs took 27, which is more than Texas and UNC combined, and they made 12 of them, which is also more than Texas and UNC combined.
Speaker 1:Mhmm.
Speaker 4:But, yeah, I mean, new model of basketball, old model of basketball, if you commit, you can get the win. But this is deeply tragic for UC Davis, for the Aggies. They made all 15 of their free throws, but just could not keep up in rebounding or shooting. Yeah. And Which are generally more important.
Speaker 1:That is how you play basketball, I fear. Yeah. Know, You the other thing is, with Gonzaga, if the threes aren't falling, I get a little bit worried. But for a team like this who's not playing a whole lot of tough competition for the rest of the season, especially outside of the non con, In the West Coast Conference on the women's side, it's a fairly weak conference.
Speaker 4:And if you just shoot that many of them, you're bound to make a gravel.
Speaker 1:Yeah. And if you're making 12 of 27 on a day like that, you can make nine. Especially if you
Speaker 4:have a fast offense like Gonzaga does, you have you can afford to miss two thirds of them.
Speaker 1:And if you're rebounding.
Speaker 4:And if you're rebounding, which they were.
Speaker 5:Metrics wise, Gonzaga's just like low mid major, but Santa Clara looks pretty good for the West Coast Conference.
Speaker 1:Santa Clara does look good. Was looking at them a little bit.
Speaker 3:For this game, and I mean, if you just look at the box score, three players were really contributing for UC Davis versus four for Gonzaga. So last time I checked, a four is greater than three.
Speaker 4:You gotta spread it out.
Speaker 2:Yeah. I'm glad you fact checked that though, because
Speaker 1:Yeah. Like
Speaker 4:Actually, can somebody Google that? Can I get a third party?
Speaker 1:That's what they taught me in engineering.
Speaker 3:I was about to say, can someone make sure that four is greater than three? Last time I checked my sources
Speaker 5:Greater than or less than calculator.
Speaker 3:Is four greater than or less than three?
Speaker 1:Or equal to. I feel like I should know this as someone who they're giving a degree getting
Speaker 4:a STEM bachelor's degree in seventy two hours. Mhmm. Four is greater the relationship of three.
Speaker 1:Four is greater than or equal to three. We got it.
Speaker 2:We got it. It's greater than three.
Speaker 1:Poor to confirm it. Thank you.
Speaker 4:I mean, if we're speaking in engineering terms, both of those numbers are pi, So
Speaker 3:That's horrible. Oh, gosh. Not pi.
Speaker 1:It depends where you're around. Right?
Speaker 2:I'm not a STEM major. Moving on. So
Speaker 4:More West
Speaker 1:Coast basketball. All right. Cal Baptist at Boise State. This one was a really, really close game. Boise State ended up taking the win here 82 to 80 but Cal Baptist looks like a really interesting team The whack is really gonna have to watch out.
Speaker 1:I think especially if Chloe lemon is scoring as many points as she did for Cal Baptist I
Speaker 4:don't remember exactly talked how about preseason.
Speaker 2:We yeah. None of us picked them. Don't
Speaker 4:think We all like, mentioned yeah. Abilene and Tarleton State.
Speaker 1:Yeah. And and the thing about Cal Baptist is they have some good talent, but they spread out that talent really, really well.
Speaker 4:Mhmm.
Speaker 1:Kinda like how Michigan State men's does it, where you kinda just cycle. A little bit less, but realistically, they're not a team that we looked at because they had a big talent, you know, one huge player, but they're really talented as a whole and they really play well together. Yeah.
Speaker 4:And as we've just learned, four contributors is better than three contributors. So if you have like six contributors, can we confirm if that's bigger than four?
Speaker 2:You know, I'm gonna go on a limb and say, yes.
Speaker 5:We have
Speaker 3:six greater than four?
Speaker 5:Let me plug it into the calculator, hold
Speaker 1:on.
Speaker 3:Thank you, thank you.
Speaker 1:Can we confirm that it's six and not seven? Oh.
Speaker 5:Six is greater than the second number four.
Speaker 4:Thank you. Wonderful.
Speaker 1:And this is why I'm retiring.
Speaker 3:I was
Speaker 2:gonna say, I'm gonna walk
Speaker 1:out and say, I'm retire after this. Without thinking about it.
Speaker 4:I'm gonna say, I'll That was so terrible. Okay. I wanna point out
Speaker 1:They have eight contributors, by the
Speaker 4:Oh, you go. Oh, And that's, and I know this is complicated, twice as many as four.
Speaker 1:Yes. Well, we're getting into multiple stages
Speaker 2:of a bit, This is a
Speaker 1:by the way.
Speaker 3:Super And
Speaker 4:it's retired.
Speaker 1:Fairfield beats Richmond, by No. The
Speaker 2:Kyle, okay. We were not ready.
Speaker 4:Only drew eight free throws, and they only made six of them, which is pretty terrible. But Boise State took 35
Speaker 1:free throws.
Speaker 5:That's how you win basketball games.
Speaker 4:And even though they only made 20 Driving against the stripe. Yeah.
Speaker 3:I agree, Border. I agree.
Speaker 4:If Cal Baptist had drawn 12 free throws, like, a third as many as Blazey State, they would've won.
Speaker 2:Yep. Yeah. That's a good strategy. It's a skill. That's interesting.
Speaker 2:Good for them.
Speaker 3:And it's not even like Cal Baptist, like, obviously, we can boil it down to free throws, but it's not even like Cal Baptist had, like, a bad game. Like, they had a good game, 45% from the field, 33% from three, and they had 26 from Chloe Lemmon. Like, they had a good game. Just Cal Baptist Go to the free throw line a little more. Just a little.
Speaker 4:You can't make your free throws if you don't shoot any.
Speaker 1:Yeah. But you can't miss them either.
Speaker 4:I mean
Speaker 1:You miss all the shots you don't take.
Speaker 5:Thanks, Colin.
Speaker 1:Alright. I think we gotta move on.
Speaker 2:You think?
Speaker 1:This game is causing us to fall apart into a chorus of random sags.
Speaker 2:We're all really tired.
Speaker 3:It's late.
Speaker 2:It's finals week.
Speaker 1:Fairfield, Richmond, like I said a few minutes ago, Fairfield beat Richmond by twenty, ninety three to 73, and they just continue to dominate, man.
Speaker 4:I love Stags basketball.
Speaker 5:They shot really well.
Speaker 4:Mhmm. 66% from the field, and 63% from three.
Speaker 5:Hard to lose games when you shoot like
Speaker 4:that. Only got one offensive rebound they only needed one offensive rebound.
Speaker 1:And and mind you, this is a Fairfield team that is currently coming off a two game losing streak. They lost to Howard, and they also lost by not very much to 11 ranked Iowa. Now Iowa, not that embarrassing. Howard, that's
Speaker 4:a That's a rough loss. But I mean Richmond Bounce back though. Mid major powerhouse. Yeah. That's a huge win.
Speaker 1:You know, you walk in there for Fairfield and I mean, they just dominated. I
Speaker 4:mean, on some level, you gotta feel bad for the Spiders, because you can play as good as you want to. If the other team is shooting two thirds from everywhere Yeah. I don't I mean, what do you even do?
Speaker 1:Richmond was playing a clean game, too. Fairfield only shot six free throws. This was not like
Speaker 4:And they didn't need any more. They didn't
Speaker 1:need any more. You know, like, maybe he played tougher defense? Holy I don't know what to say. You know, Fairfield's play style is so different from literally everyone else in the country. They've got those roadrunners
Speaker 4:I forgot about that.
Speaker 1:And like, you gotta respect it, and it really
Speaker 4:It works.
Speaker 1:Well, it works, I think in part because it confuses every team they play.
Speaker 4:If you're not prepped for Fairfield, they're gonna punch you in the nose and beat you by 20.
Speaker 1:Exactly. And that's exactly what happened here.
Speaker 3:They got it done a lot from Katie Lamoreaux, who finished the night with 31 points. Dang.
Speaker 1:Yeah. Katie Lamoreaux was crazy.
Speaker 3:Just what can you do? It's not even like that. They also moved the ball around effective and really well. 25 assists in this game.
Speaker 1:And they were really spread out in assists too. It was not like one player had a bunch. No. Janelle Brown had eight, but a bunch of players had like three assists.
Speaker 3:Like everybody is contributing their part and getting people involved. So just a good just a really good win for Fairfield. And for Richmond, who came into the season ranked, maybe going back to the drawing board, just trying to figure something out, get some momentum going back.
Speaker 4:You need a defensive scheme.
Speaker 3:You need something different because I don't know if I don't know if it was just that kind of night for Fairfield where they're just hitting everything and anything. But to what Eli said, if you're making two thirds of your shots from literally anywhere on the floor Literally everywhere. You're not gonna stop it. I don't know if it was port port on ball screen switching, if there was just help defense wasn't there.
Speaker 4:I mean, with that many assists, you're clearly not generating very many turnovers.
Speaker 3:Just it was it's just overall not a good game for Richmond.
Speaker 5:Yeah. I dunno, maybe take a page out of Boise State's playbook.
Speaker 4:So true.
Speaker 5:Drive, get 35.
Speaker 4:Get 35 free throws.
Speaker 3:Yeah. That sounds like a
Speaker 1:great recipe
Speaker 3:They for had
Speaker 1:a bunch of free throws is the issue.
Speaker 4:Oh, no. Oh, no, Richmond.
Speaker 1:Let me double check the actual numbers here.
Speaker 4:Yeah, the shooting might be enough to compensate for the free throws.
Speaker 1:I believe, yeah, they shot 17 free throws. Gotta get to 30. They drew 18 fouls, like what more can you ask for from this Yeah. It's not like they shot awfully, but sometimes
Speaker 4:the other team just doesn't miss
Speaker 1:Sometimes the other team just doesn't miss and when you're going up against Fairfield for that to be your third loss after two top 10 losses That's rough. Yeah, but hey, moving on, UMass Army. This was a great game. 64, 61 Army win. You know, Patriot League looking really, really interesting right now.
Speaker 2:Looking fun.
Speaker 4:It's looking intensely competitive for second place. Cause currently, army is pretty conclusively ahead of the rest of the field. They have like three more non conference wins than everybody else does. But, yeah. Shout out to the cadets at West Point, they remain perfect at home, pretty conclusively on top of the Patriot League.
Speaker 4:I think they're eight and two. Navy's in second at five and five. Yeah. So Huge difference.
Speaker 1:Those will
Speaker 4:be fun rivalry games, one, and also Army's having a great non conference season.
Speaker 1:Yeah. Yeah. Can't wait for, like, the one random upset.
Speaker 4:But the free throw disparity here.
Speaker 3:Yeah. Thank you. I have to get the actual disparity up because my mind's in a million other places, but
Speaker 4:It's still finals week.
Speaker 3:Yeah. Everything everything is going on. It's just
Speaker 4:And also Josh has been in this basement for hours.
Speaker 3:Yes, I've been trying to keep up to date with sports talk and everything. When aren't we? Army had 17 free throws compared to UMass's seven.
Speaker 4:There you go.
Speaker 1:There it is. Yep.
Speaker 3:They made 14 of them compared to UMass's five. Like, that just says the story, doesn't Like, there's not much else to me
Speaker 4:And UMass wasn't shooting 66% from the field.
Speaker 3:No, that's a problem that's a problem too.
Speaker 1:Also helps. That also helps.
Speaker 3:They were only shooting 43% from the field and 27 from three.
Speaker 1:I will say, UMass looks really interesting for the MAC in general as well. We're gonna
Speaker 3:We're gonna take an intermission.
Speaker 1:Very briefly stop, because we have Iowa, Iowa State is about to finish up, and we'll talk about that in a moment.
Speaker 4:Iowa basketball, they're trying to inbound it. Inbound, like 40 foot three pointer missed. Iowa State rebound, game over. Cyclones win seventy four sixty nine.
Speaker 3:See, this is why I want I want Eli to come with me on these road trips I need to do.
Speaker 4:Another excellent addition of the CyHawk series. I'm sure Jay and Jensen will be ready in Iowa City next year. But Iowa State improves to 11 and o.
Speaker 1:Alright. Let's jump into Anyway. 11 Iowa at number 10 Iowa State, which
Speaker 4:concluded seconds ago in a 70 four-sixty nine win for the Iowa State Cyclones at home in Ames.
Speaker 1:Yeah, we just took a break from recording to watch the end of that. Audie Crooks is insane. I know. She has been all season,
Speaker 4:like I know. Holy Believe.
Speaker 1:30.1 rebounds double double tonight against the number 11 team in the country.
Speaker 4:And seven of them were offensive rebounds.
Speaker 1:And seven of them were offensive rebounds. Can we talk about that for a very brief moment and that, like, she should be in the running for National Player of the Year? Oh. I'd also like to keep putting up.
Speaker 3:You're you're preaching to the choir right now. I I I like, I think we all agree with you. I think Iowa really the one player that the broadcast highlighted, I'm gonna I don't wanna butcher her last name, but I know she's been so good for Iowa all season. Ava Hayden? Hayden?
Speaker 3:I don't wanna Thank you. Mhmm. She only played sixteen minutes tonight. And looking at it, she had in foul trouble. So Iowa stayed attacked.
Speaker 4:That fouled out.
Speaker 1:Makes a big difference.
Speaker 3:They pointed out who Iowa one of Iowa's best players is, and essentially made them be a non factor. I mean, Ava's averaging 16 points, nine rebounds, and she fouled out.
Speaker 4:She got eight points and two rebounds. Hannah Strelke also fouled out.
Speaker 2:Yep. That all That's also a huge difference maker.
Speaker 4:But I wanna shout out two other Iowa State players also got double doubles. Addie Brown, thirty nine minutes, 20 points, 12 rebounds.
Speaker 2:Nice.
Speaker 4:And Jada Williams, thirty five minutes, 11 points, 12 assists.
Speaker 3:Love that.
Speaker 1:Wow. Just absurd that you have three players on your team with double doubles.
Speaker 4:I will say four.
Speaker 1:Against the 11 ranked team of the country.
Speaker 4:Four of five Iowa State starters played at least thirty five minutes.
Speaker 3:Ricky. I would just like to say both of
Speaker 2:these teams Check.
Speaker 3:Shoot your free throws better, please.
Speaker 4:Yes.
Speaker 3:For my sake And that is
Speaker 4:small free throw game.
Speaker 3:Six to 12 for Iowa and nine to 20 for Iowa State. Shoot your free throws
Speaker 1:way worse. Talking 50%. And below. Like 45%. Yeah.
Speaker 1:Terrible. Bad. The engineer in me is like, I can do this math in my head. Nine divided by 20.
Speaker 2:Yeah. We're doing a lot of math, talking a lot of numbers.
Speaker 4:Is way
Speaker 2:too much math for
Speaker 4:sports numbers,
Speaker 2:in my opinion. But you know what is fun numbers? Cool segue. Upsets.
Speaker 1:Sure, Kylie.
Speaker 2:Yeah, when the smaller school scores more points than When the the
Speaker 4:bigger school with the larger number ranking beats the school with the smaller number ranking.
Speaker 2:Or no ranking at all.
Speaker 4:Or no ranking at all. Yeah. Yep. That's fun.
Speaker 2:I'll start. Brian beat Boston College. I know, we know listen, I know Boston College I'm Women's upset. Yes, it is. I know Boston College Women's team is not exactly the premier Welcome to
Speaker 4:the fifth edition of which liberal arts college in New England is beating Boston College this Shout
Speaker 2:out Brian.
Speaker 1:Shout How out, many wins does Boston College have? Four?
Speaker 2:They have wins?
Speaker 4:I think they're four and five.
Speaker 3:Oh, I thought they would have been I like two
Speaker 1:and don't believe they are. I believe they are. Are four and nine.
Speaker 4:Dang. So I was right about their wins.
Speaker 1:And their wins have come by five points over Merrimack. Love. Oh.
Speaker 4:Imagine being one of the liberal arts colleges that lose in That's Boston embarrassing.
Speaker 1:They also they lost in overtime to Harvard, which is crazy.
Speaker 4:Love.
Speaker 1:They lost they beat Ryder by 40.
Speaker 4:Oh, well, beat Well, they're not
Speaker 1:little by 30, and they beat New
Speaker 4:Also Hampshire by not a liberal arts college. My theory is impeccable. It Except for Merrimack.
Speaker 1:Really thoroughly appreciate the 25 loss to Quinnipiac. Yep. Love. But, yeah, Boston College, not very good. Bryant No.
Speaker 2:Shout out, Bryant,
Speaker 1:Solid upset still. Heck Bryant's eight and three. Why is this an upset, Kylie?
Speaker 2:Alright. It's an upset because they're not a P5 team.
Speaker 4:Let's Fair leave New England immediately and never return. Porter.
Speaker 5:I have Eastern Washington beating South Dakota for their first win on the road.
Speaker 1:Go, EWU. That's that's a solid
Speaker 2:South Dakota snagged a really good win at the beginning of the year.
Speaker 5:No, that's South Dakota's first home loss.
Speaker 1:Yeah. There you go. That's impressive.
Speaker 4:Stormed into Vermillion, came out with a win.
Speaker 5:South Dakota beat k state.
Speaker 1:Yep, it did. Shout out to all my friends.
Speaker 2:Shout out k state.
Speaker 4:Speak to
Speaker 1:K State. They've,
Speaker 4:I guess, redeemed themselves since that loss to South Dakota. They upset number 13, Ole Miss.
Speaker 2:Word.
Speaker 4:And they are much, much better than their men's team, but we'll get into that.
Speaker 2:Is a 100% true. That's
Speaker 4:a
Speaker 1:lot Shout out Kansas
Speaker 4:State. Alright. Clearly, they put in a lot of work in the last couple of weeks. You're not losing to Summit League teams anymore. Great win.
Speaker 1:Mhmm. Yeah. Josh, what you got?
Speaker 3:It it kinda hurts me to say this one as the as as our the college bat women's college basketball for impact eighty eight nine FM, but Wisconsin Knock knock off MSU and MSU they missed they were missing Theron Hallock. Think that was a big Yes.
Speaker 1:Yes. Absolutely, it was. They just they
Speaker 3:were getting dominated all throughout the game. They had one lead, I believe, early on in the first quarter, and that was about it. Wisconsin would just play them off the court, kind of. And I think it was a I'm gonna have to go back and look at what Frayluk said, I feel like this was a good reset. Just kinda like their first real test.
Speaker 3:No disrespect away game. No disrespect to and Clemson. Those are good programs, but now you finally played a Big Ten team. This is time to really go back to the drawing board.
Speaker 4:Now it's time to earn it.
Speaker 2:I was gonna say that our strength of schedule, non conference, abysmal.
Speaker 4:Abysmal.
Speaker 2:Absolutely abysmal.
Speaker 3:Yeah, say aggressive.
Speaker 2:So this is not a shocking development to me at all. Did I want it to happen? Absolutely not. I love our women's basketball team. But I'm really not surprised that the that their first test against a Big Ten opponent
Speaker 5:This unfortunately resulted in a is their second q two game. They beat Clemson, and every other game has been Q4.
Speaker 4:-GIGI: Yep. Was I'm gonna say, we're going to a four team invitational in a couple weeks, where if we win and they win, we will be playing Ole Miss.
Speaker 3:-MATT: Oh. That'll be a great game.
Speaker 4:Which I think would be our first Q1 game.
Speaker 1:That would get really, really interesting. It'd be
Speaker 2:a fun
Speaker 4:to play.
Speaker 1:We don't have
Speaker 5:The other thing, though, is MSU has to take advantage of every single q one game they get. They're not gonna not gonna do them any favors.
Speaker 3:No. And the best the best thing for them is a lot of them are gonna be home games. A lot of those are going to be a home games because you get Michigan at home.
Speaker 4:You get
Speaker 2:both
Speaker 3:the California schools at home.
Speaker 1:Maryland and Ohio State at home. Home. Nebraska at home.
Speaker 4:Not a
Speaker 3:lot of your toughest road game, I could say, is either Washington
Speaker 4:I think ours might be Iowa.
Speaker 1:We have Iowa on the road, Michigan on the road.
Speaker 3:So, I mean, yeah, tough test, but you're getting a lot of the talent in the Big Ten coming to Breslin.
Speaker 4:So we need to take advantage have
Speaker 3:take advantage of that. I'm sure for UCLA, USC, and Michigan, the crowds are gonna be really good.
Speaker 2:Oh, yeah.
Speaker 3:So, you have to take advantage
Speaker 1:of it. You really do. We also have a nice little five ranked teams in six games stretch there from January 15 to February 4.
Speaker 3:It's a lot of fun. And the only and the only one that is not ranked is Purdue. Purdue.
Speaker 4:Well, men's team holds one of those runs off last year, so
Speaker 3:True, true.
Speaker 2:Yeah, that is also true. Yep. But Alright, Colin, round Alright, out the
Speaker 1:last upset of the week, I've got New Mexico beating Arizona. New Mexico women's basketball, not notoriously
Speaker 2:Neither is it. As of late, neither. Yeah, but, like, still
Speaker 4:Arizona, new head coach this season, kind of rebuilding, but it was only their second loss.
Speaker 1:Yeah. I mean, hey, Arizona took Grand Canyon's coach, correct?
Speaker 4:No. ASU
Speaker 1:did. ASU did. Who'd Arizona take? Buffalo's coach. Buffalo's coach.
Speaker 1:That's right.
Speaker 4:I think someone.
Speaker 1:So, you know, it's still a rebuild year, right? But, and kinda, you know, that first year, rough loss to start, but, hey.
Speaker 4:Great win for the Lobos.
Speaker 1:Great win for the Lobos. Let's hop into men's basketball, where we had so many good games. So many good games. Let's start Purdue Iowa State. Iowa State won that 80 one-fifty eight.
Speaker 1:Just walked Purdue out of their own
Speaker 2:Out of Mackinac.
Speaker 1:Buh bye. Like, just I believe it was tied for the biggest win over a number one ranked team at home ever.
Speaker 5:Correct?
Speaker 3:Correct?
Speaker 1:Yeah.
Speaker 4:With Villanova over 1995 Yukon.
Speaker 1:Yes. Crazy stuff. Thank goodness. You know I root on Purdue's downfall. Most of us do.
Speaker 1:Not necessarily excited about Iowa State being that good.
Speaker 4:I mean, we don't have to play them.
Speaker 1:But like, the Big twelve is getting really, really interesting really, really quickly, and I'm loving it.
Speaker 4:Yes. I mean, incredible win for the Cyclones, shell shock in West Lafayette, I have to assume. Mhmm. I mean, we talked about it so much preseason. Purdue returned everybody they needed to return.
Speaker 4:Like, they had the their dream roster preseason. So this is not Good. Acceptable, frankly.
Speaker 2:No.
Speaker 4:Losing by 23 at home like, a tough loss to a top 10 team may be acceptable.
Speaker 2:Right. Fine.
Speaker 4:Tying the worst margin for a number one team on their home floor in history, utterly unacceptable. Yeah. Yeah. They have to be better.
Speaker 1:Can I just say the Big 12 looks wild, though? Got Arizona number one in the country, Iowa State number four, Houston number seven, BYU 10.
Speaker 5:Yeah. Four teams on the top 12.
Speaker 1:Texas Tech 16, I mean, you're not that far off, and Kansas at 19, right? You know, we are looking at an absurd top of the Big 12 that they might get, you know, I don't know what's gonna happen with that season.
Speaker 4:It's gonna be very entertaining.
Speaker 1:It could be the end so much.
Speaker 3:But Mhmm.
Speaker 2:I mean Oh, yeah.
Speaker 5:What does Texas Tech You gotta be looking at Iowa State and thinking, you know, we got smoked by Purdue, and then Iowa State walked Purdue out of their gym. Yeah. It's not a good sign
Speaker 1:for Texas Tech. Yeah, it gets really interesting.
Speaker 4:Top of the Big 12?
Speaker 1:Top of Number Big 11, good Zag averse. Number 18, Kentucky. The Zags absolutely killed Kentucky 9459.
Speaker 5:Mark Pope's got problems.
Speaker 3:This was actually, going back to Purdue, Iowa State, I wrote in our document, this was bad, like really bad.
Speaker 2:This is worse. Gonzaga, Kentucky.
Speaker 4:This was worse.
Speaker 3:This was bad. Like, really bad. Like, this
Speaker 4:So is Michigan might be good.
Speaker 5:No. Gonzaga's a fantastic basketball team.
Speaker 2:I it was a flu game. Think Michigan probably would have ended up winning. However, Michigan
Speaker 5:shot 70%, and, like, Gonzaga shot less than 30%.
Speaker 2:Unreal. Think
Speaker 3:I think the first time when Michigan shoots below 50%, I think the entire like, I think the Michigan fan base is gonna be, like, crying, thinking that this is the end of the world.
Speaker 4:Also, I'll finally breathe out.
Speaker 3:Like like Yeah. Like, this stuff happens. Like, Michigan has done it now for what? Like, six, seven no. I am sorry.
Speaker 1:You have no room to talk.
Speaker 4:You're both
Speaker 1:better. Have no room to talk.
Speaker 4:You're both better.
Speaker 2:Like, six games. Michigan just beat Xavier last night by, Villanova? Sorry. Villanova by over 20.
Speaker 1:Look, it's finals together. But,
Speaker 3:Yeah, this is just
Speaker 4:every biggie school is a navy blue letter. Okay.
Speaker 1:I was
Speaker 2:gonna say they all kind of their colors It's
Speaker 3:a it's a red.
Speaker 4:It's either a navy blue letter or the dog, and I can't
Speaker 3:be bothered or a blue or
Speaker 4:a blue Jay Whatever. It's blue.
Speaker 3:But this was just Kentucky's in a really bad spot.
Speaker 5:The effort's just not there, you know, like, last year, the players played for Pope.
Speaker 3:No one's doing it.
Speaker 5:You know, breaking your ankle and still getting back on transition defense, and this year, it's they don't
Speaker 3:care.
Speaker 1:-They look lazy.
Speaker 5:It's a culture issue, -DAVID: and, like, he's gotta figure that out, and he's
Speaker 1:got the gotta get the locker room behind him if he wants to have any Yeah. And he's gotta do it quick, because he will be fired at the end of the season if he doesn't.
Speaker 4:Who all picked Kentucky to win the SEC again?
Speaker 1:Not I.
Speaker 2:Not me. Me and Quieter. My
Speaker 1:other team
Speaker 2:is sucking right now.
Speaker 1:There it
Speaker 2:You never know. Conference play hasn't hasn't started yet.
Speaker 3:Actually, never know. Transfers
Speaker 5:are still hurt.
Speaker 3:I want I want the two people to that didn't pick these schools to chime in whose pick is worse between Kylie and Porter or mine for the SEC I I pick Florida. Oh, and they pick Kentucky
Speaker 1:Kentucky is way worse. Okay, Colin who did you
Speaker 2:so what injured so what injuries does Florida have because I'm gonna I'm gonna I'm me
Speaker 3:I all of Florida's losses have come against good teams. I'm saying my
Speaker 1:True. That's not
Speaker 2:a All of
Speaker 4:Kentucky's challenges, I hear you come to of New Orleans.
Speaker 2:Ranked well, University of New Orleans is like I'm a private I'm not a drag. I'm not defend mule nporter. Most of Kentucky's transfers are hurt. Yeah. And they've all of the games they've lost, while the deficits have been insane, they have been to top 25 ranked
Speaker 1:opponents.
Speaker 4:Are their transfers gonna be back by January?
Speaker 2:Well, hopefully this this hopefully they'll have some time, but
Speaker 1:But they also haven't
Speaker 4:beaten a ranked opponent.
Speaker 5:Luckily for them, the SEC does not look I think
Speaker 2:we're still gonna be good, and they're gonna finish in the top half, Porter. What are we thinking?
Speaker 3:Also think,
Speaker 4:look, maybe you won't lose any points.
Speaker 2:What I'm saying, long as we get points.
Speaker 3:I think also Florida is just they're just they've been into a unfortunate streak between Arizona, who I think Arizona is the best in Yes. The Barely losing to Duke on the road.
Speaker 2:Yeah. That's rough.
Speaker 4:That was close.
Speaker 3:Which was a not a buzzer beater, but like a last second three, and then a tough close game against Yukon last night.
Speaker 1:Yeah. Florida's not finishing their games, but they're playing just fine.
Speaker 4:They're also playing, like, the strongest schedule in the country.
Speaker 3:They get they get a little bit of
Speaker 2:a break mean the same when you lose. So
Speaker 4:Right. Like, Kentucky does.
Speaker 2:Right. Like, Florida. I'm just saying, I'm not not hate on Josh, but I'm defending I my
Speaker 3:just I just wanted I just wanted a conversation.
Speaker 5:Arkansas is the front runner for the SEC.
Speaker 1:Yes. That's Eli's pick.
Speaker 2:For sure.
Speaker 1:I wanna jump down to my pick who just played Illinois. And lost.
Speaker 2:And lost Illinois? Yes.
Speaker 1:I'm a top of
Speaker 2:the world. Your pick
Speaker 5:is the least bad because the SEC is just
Speaker 1:Falling apart.
Speaker 4:And my pick almost lost to Winthrop.
Speaker 1:Yeah. So, number 13, Tennessee, number 14 Illinois. The Balkan block took down Tennessee 70 five-sixty two, and holy cow, what a weird game.
Speaker 4:Yeah, friendly fire in the small contingent of orange D1 teams,
Speaker 1:but
Speaker 4:13 Tennessee turnovers to six for Illinois really helped decide this one. Even though the Vols outrebounded them 46 to 31.
Speaker 2:Well, yeah, because I've watched I'm watching Illinois play the little bit I have. They're not getting in the paint. They're not they're not putting up They're not fighting for I'm for rebounds, like, this is this is not surprising to me at all. Also, forgot that Kylan Boswell was still in college.
Speaker 1:Yes. Real.
Speaker 4:Me too.
Speaker 2:I was like, uh-oh. You're still there.
Speaker 4:Yeah. It's seeing a long lost enemy.
Speaker 1:Yeah. Illinois' team is just very interesting. They play unique style of basketball that clearly works against SEC teams. We'll see how it works against Big Ten teams.
Speaker 2:I think it's gonna be we talked about this last week. I think it's gonna be similar to last year's Yeah.
Speaker 4:Team. Yeah. I mean, For sure. Worked against Ohio State.
Speaker 1:Yeah. Yeah. That's my concern.
Speaker 3:Last we you alluded at it. Last night was a weird one. They won 88 to 80 against Ohio State, and the way they play is so interesting, but we talked about it. Ohio State had their one game where Bruce Thornton decides he's just gonna take over. He had 34 last night.
Speaker 3:And, yeah, it's really this Illinois team is just really confusing to me because you can make a case that they're a really good they're a really good team. They're a great team, but they're not they don't I don't know what happens, but they can't crack to the next level to get to There's no flash leads.
Speaker 4:It's like they're not fighting for it.
Speaker 3:No. Like, they're a great team. Don't get me wrong, but they're not elite. Right. Like, have good they have good wins, but then they also have losses against teams that are just better than them.
Speaker 3:So it's like they're not ready to crack to the next level, but this is also consistent for a Brad Underwood, Illinois team. Yeah. They have really good wins, but they don't have the wins that
Speaker 2:Put them over the top. Yes.
Speaker 3:Yeah. So
Speaker 1:Mhmm. Yep. And
Speaker 3:then also,
Speaker 1:I looked at They're at baseline.
Speaker 3:Yeah. And I also looked at it
Speaker 4:Which is disappointing for her, like, the whole brand new roster strategy they tried. Like, this team was designed to do anything except what a typical Illinois team does, but that's exactly what they're doing. Yeah.
Speaker 3:Also, Tennessee's gotta be a little worried now. This is three in a row, also make your make your free throws
Speaker 4:And don't lose to C. A. Q.
Speaker 3:Eight of 18. Also, Syracuse might be a sneaky shout in
Speaker 1:the ACC I like Syracuse a lot. I think they're
Speaker 3:gonna I think they were very
Speaker 4:unpleasant don't lose to Syracuse.
Speaker 3:They were very unlucky at players era to
Speaker 4:oh yeah that heartbreaker overtime lost to Houston
Speaker 3:that they're very they were unlucky I think they're a really good team this year.
Speaker 1:Yeah, they'll be ranked by the end of the season if I had to guess
Speaker 4:Should we jump back up to the one we skipped?
Speaker 1:I think we should. I don't don't
Speaker 4:want to.
Speaker 1:In the Breslin Center versus your number seven Michigan State Spartans, and it was a 60 six-sixty loss for the Spartans.
Speaker 4:Bleh. Gotta be able
Speaker 5:to shoot the ball.
Speaker 3:A game, first of all. Unbelievable to watch on TV.
Speaker 1:The energy in the Breslin was quite possibly the best I've ever experienced. It is the way to go out for me.
Speaker 2:Stop. Dude. Dude, it made me sad again.
Speaker 1:And like, here's the issue
Speaker 4:The for upper bowl was on their feet for most of the second half.
Speaker 2:That's unbelievable. Started coming at 04:30. Like, we were out there. Yeah. It was Yeah.
Speaker 4:Were outside the Brads for, like, six hours.
Speaker 2:Yeah. Low key kind of fun.
Speaker 3:Were you guys singing Spardi Wonderland? Yep.
Speaker 1:Oh, Oh, of course.
Speaker 2:And Tom Izzo, shout out, walked through the crowd at, like
Speaker 4:I got padded.
Speaker 2:7AM. That's nice. Yeah.
Speaker 3:What were you gonna say, Colin?
Speaker 1:It's just like Michigan State's defense played the same defense they've been playing. They just couldn't get shots to fall. I I Can I piggyback off what you're saying?
Speaker 3:Yeah. I I Absolutely. The problem is the number one guy should be Jeremy Fierce. It should be Jeremy Fierce, the guy that you can look at and say, can you make this shot? Well, Jeremy Fierce did not he was excellent off the ball.
Speaker 3:He was great at Facilitating. Facilitating defense, everything. He went o of 10 from the field. That's actually a problem. It's okay.
Speaker 3:They don't have a true number one. They don't have the guy that they can look to and go go get us a bucket. They just don't. And that's okay. Like, there's nothing wrong with that, but you can't expect you have to essentially play yourself into bigger leads.
Speaker 3:If you're gonna play closer games, it's gonna be tough to get wins.
Speaker 4:You gotta have a guy.
Speaker 3:Mhmm. Have to have that guy. Duke ended up give credit to MSU and their defense. They stopped the guy for the first half. Then the guy kicked in in the second half for Cameron Boozer.
Speaker 5:So they only scored 66 points. Like, MSU's defensive strategy worked really well.
Speaker 2:Without Cameron Boozer, that team is they lose by 20. Yeah. Like, literally lose by 20. But
Speaker 3:eventually, the guy kicked in, then he started scoring, which he was finding ways to just get like, he made it look so effortless. Good
Speaker 2:players are going to score. They are going to make good plays.
Speaker 4:They're gonna they're gonna get through eventually.
Speaker 3:Yes. You can see the development of Jeremy Fierce. It's going up. He's at a great level right now. I just want him to take that one extra step where he can make a three.
Speaker 4:And we've seen flashes of that this season. We have.
Speaker 3:I just want it consistently. I just want consistent play, but I'm not too harp I mean, I'm not too upset by this. We always lose I'm always proud of
Speaker 1:this loss. Like, this is way we played, I can be happy with that. Like, it it's As
Speaker 4:long as Penn State by, like, 40 this weekend.
Speaker 3:Yeah. It's not it's not gonna be a big deal in the long run.
Speaker 4:Otherwise, I will be less happy.
Speaker 3:It's just this is a little bit of a heartbreaker just because this would have been this would have been an amazing way to send everyone home for the winter break.
Speaker 1:Absolutely. To get
Speaker 3:a great win at home against a very, very good Duke team.
Speaker 2:Mhmm. Yeah. Yeah. I mean,
Speaker 5:we held Boozer to his season low, like, when you factor in playing more than twenty minutes,
Speaker 2:like Yeah. Mhmm.
Speaker 5:A good defensive game. You just gotta 100%. Get those shots to fall.
Speaker 1:Yeah. And we can do that at some point. That's last season
Speaker 2:It will happen.
Speaker 1:Last season, we watched the shots start falling in, like, February, so, you know, the fact that they have fallen against teams like Kentucky and Arkansas
Speaker 4:And North Carolina.
Speaker 1:And North Carolina, I'm feeling okay, you know? Yeah. A few games where the shots are not falling It's gonna
Speaker 2:hate to
Speaker 1:I feel that early season
Speaker 4:I don't want it now. Yes. And if you're gonna lose to anybody, I mean It's gonna be Duke.
Speaker 2:Right, might as well.
Speaker 4:If you gave me our schedule and then pick a loss
Speaker 2:That's what I'm picking
Speaker 3:that would be the one that we all went yeah They're probably gonna lose that one also the development of Carson Cooper
Speaker 2:Machines
Speaker 3:I more say I wanna say more Carson Cooper than Jackson caller because caller was a wasn't he a four star recruit coming out of Utah Cooper was literally a guy on the img b team. Yeah, and oh, yeah, he had offers from Duquesne American, Detroit Mercy. He was a zero star recruit and he's turned into
Speaker 2:He's consistent. His rebounding.
Speaker 4:He's
Speaker 3:so impressed. Sixteen and sixteen against a Duke team for a guy that was a zero star recruit out of high school. I gotta give him I gotta give Izzo so much credit for the way he recruits and develops these guys because who could have seen a guy like Jack or not Jackson, Carson Cooper coming out and playing like that against Duke. Is one
Speaker 1:of the only coaches that still develops players, and you can tell when you see players like Carson Cooper.
Speaker 2:Because he picks players who have the right work ethic. Like, I mean, Carson Cooper's been working his tail off for for four years, and you can tell how much effort he's put into bettering his game.
Speaker 4:And and not to go back in on Kentucky, but maybe they could use a little bit of that.
Speaker 1:Yeah. Maybe. Speaking of coaches that put a lot of time into their players Oh, and really developed players. Yes. Greg Campy got an amazing win at home.
Speaker 2:I know you're not talking about this being an amazing
Speaker 1:9897 just pretty I
Speaker 2:mean Oakland okay?
Speaker 1:Both teams were shooting really really well And Oakland you know pulling away with a victory Greg Campi's got a good looking team this year playing one of the toughest schedules in the
Speaker 2:town Oakland students. What are you doing? Yeah? Go to a basketball
Speaker 4:basketball Yeah,
Speaker 3:well in fairness to Oakland students I think they're having a little bit of a heating issue on campus right now.
Speaker 4:They are? Right. They have
Speaker 3:they've they've all had to move out of dorms because of no heat. Wow. And they've had to go to different places. So in fairness to Oakland Okay. Students
Speaker 2:That's little different. Guess what I've had to
Speaker 4:be their basketball opening up. That was true.
Speaker 2:True. You need to warm up?
Speaker 4:Go watch your
Speaker 2:go watch your basketball team play. They're good.
Speaker 3:Just say good.
Speaker 4:If you guys don't start going to games, we're gonna have to. Okay? Hey. I'll be I'll be I'll
Speaker 3:be home for Christmas break. Don't tell
Speaker 1:No one's complaining about that.
Speaker 2:Yeah. Just the LCA game is calling my name.
Speaker 3:Just a good win for Oakland over a max school.
Speaker 1:I I like solid gritty, and they just fought.
Speaker 5:Yeah. Let's play four q one games.
Speaker 3:Yeah. Insane. This team looks like, in my opinion, a tournament team. Absolutely. None of
Speaker 2:us picked them.
Speaker 3:Playing their way to winning Horizon.
Speaker 4:Yeah. Yeah. I mean, both teams shot better than 50%. Obviously, they got into the high nineties. But Oakland, were hotter from three, they took advantage of turnovers, and they are still undefeated at home.
Speaker 1:Yeah. Crazy.
Speaker 4:So go to basketball games, OU students, what are you doing?
Speaker 5:Yes. They played Michigan State, that's their last Q one game. UNI is their last Q two game. Their only Q two game.
Speaker 4:In the McLeod, right?
Speaker 5:Correct. And then the rest of them were just Q three and Q four, so
Speaker 2:It's setting up Horizon League place.
Speaker 5:Setting up pretty nicely for Oakland.
Speaker 2:Yeah. Rough Horizon League this year, I fear. And I think we all, when we talked about the Horizon League, I think we all mentioned that, it's looking looked a little bleak.
Speaker 1:Yeah. Think Detroit Mercy on the horizon because there was You did?
Speaker 2:I did. Yeah. To
Speaker 4:Who did I pick?
Speaker 2:None of us picked none of us picked Oakland.
Speaker 3:Who, I picked
Speaker 2:Colin Colin picked right state.
Speaker 1:I picked right state.
Speaker 4:And Porter picked
Speaker 1:Detroit Mercy on the women's Oh, Yes. That's my
Speaker 4:bad. And Andy Katz picked Purdue Fort Wayne.
Speaker 1:Oh. Which is not fucking great.
Speaker 4:Anyway, let's talk about another Mac school.
Speaker 2:Yeah, also lost. Heartbreaking for the back.
Speaker 1:Utah Valley at Bowling Green. Utah Valley came away with a victory, 80 two-seventy one.
Speaker 4:This is so tragic.
Speaker 1:You know, mind you, Bowling Green coming off of that Kansas State win.
Speaker 4:So Kansas State so Kansas Might State be bad.
Speaker 1:Might be? They are not winning a Big twelve game at this rate. And let's just you know who's
Speaker 2:gonna beat them. Colorado.
Speaker 1:Let's just
Speaker 4:open that spreadsheet again Let's for one stop. Because it's in row one.
Speaker 2:Because we'll bring this out later Conference
Speaker 4:we picked. And I'm just gonna look
Speaker 1:at I that believe I was the worst. Pick. And I you
Speaker 4:talked first. And we're just gonna come back to what that sell says in a minute.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 1:Utah Valley one.
Speaker 3:Yeah, Javonte Campbell, not enough for BGSU. Sorry. I'm trying to figure out what I wrote, because, like, it's not making for BGSU with four players
Speaker 4:wrote four players twice.
Speaker 2:So what I meant what what I is
Speaker 4:equal to four. I I
Speaker 3:really screwed myself up, but Utah Valley had four players in double digits and one with nine. That's what I was trying to say. I don't know why I wrote with two players for Utah Valley. Yeah. I I really screwed
Speaker 1:myself up, but, yeah. Get that four for four.
Speaker 2:Not sponsored, but
Speaker 3:four is greater than one.
Speaker 1:That's what
Speaker 2:I know. Yeah. Back to math. Alright.
Speaker 1:91 is greater than 65.
Speaker 4:Oh. And
Speaker 1:South Alabama lost to Eastern Tennessee State.
Speaker 2:Yeah, that's
Speaker 1:ninety one sixty five.
Speaker 4:And this is a South Alabama who is currently on They have the best non conference record in the Sunbelt. They're like eight and three.
Speaker 2:Yikes.
Speaker 4:But definitive win for the Buccaneers, they outrebounded South Alabama 45 to 29.
Speaker 1:Just wild.
Speaker 4:Shout out to TSU.
Speaker 1:Any other comments?
Speaker 3:Yes. Not not really. I mean, blowout for East Tennessee State, four players in double figures, 20 for Blake Barkley, and 29 for Makih Johnson. That's impressive. And two players scoring in not only double figures, but twenties, it's not gonna be a pretty night for the other team.
Speaker 4:You're gonna get to 90 points.
Speaker 1:ETSU is a team we've talked about a few times already.
Speaker 4:Yep. They're cleaning up on the Alabama schools, actually. Yeah. Because I think we talked about their win over North Alabama earlier.
Speaker 3:I was just I believe
Speaker 1:you're right.
Speaker 4:Yeah. As well.
Speaker 1:That sounds right. Alright. Porter, I assume this is your game. This what? This one.
Speaker 1:Colorado State. Colorado State, SCORams, 906 victory.
Speaker 5:Yeah. So, Colorado was undefeated coming into this game. Couldn't handle Moby Arena for their first away game of the season.
Speaker 4:No. And and not in Fuchan.
Speaker 5:No. They missed six free throws and it gave me the loss by five. They shot better than Colorado State in most categories. Most of the stats were the same. Colorado State tried to give this game away midway through the second half.
Speaker 2:Wait, hold on. Let me pause for shock and awe.
Speaker 4:Hearing none. Colorado State was
Speaker 5:up by 11, and then Colorado came back and took the lead, but Colorado State was able to put them away.
Speaker 3:Yippee. The
Speaker 1:Rams. Yeah. All right, upset of the week time.
Speaker 2:Hofstra over Pitt. Hofstra beat Pitt.
Speaker 1:Kylie, once again, you have picked one of the worst, like, You power conference
Speaker 2:want to pick Illinois over Tennessee? Like, bro, be for real. They got Ohio State. Got yelled at for that's a fourteen, thirteen, whatever.
Speaker 3:Okay.
Speaker 2:Hofstra beat Pitt.
Speaker 1:Hofstra did beat Pitt.
Speaker 4:So true.
Speaker 1:I have UNLV beating Stanford because when a Mountain West school beats an ACC school, you don't expect it to Ew. Stanford Ew. Ew. Ew. Ew.
Speaker 3:I hated every second of that. Never
Speaker 4:call Stanford an ACC school my presence ever
Speaker 3:again. That's exactly what I was thinking.
Speaker 1:Eli, what do you got?
Speaker 4:Iowa State Purdue.
Speaker 1:Yeah, fair enough.
Speaker 4:Come on. Yep. Tied the record for definitively, mathematically, the upset of the century. Alright.
Speaker 3:Josh. Washington over USC.
Speaker 1:Again, very fair.
Speaker 3:Yeah.
Speaker 1:Yeah. That's a solid
Speaker 4:Their freshman big man is really good.
Speaker 3:Yes. I was watching Washington play u UCLA, and I think UCLA ended up coming away with the win,
Speaker 2:I think.
Speaker 4:Oh, I was Washington. I was watching Washington like two weeks ago when they needed overtime to beat Southern.
Speaker 3:But they they have some good pieces there. It's looking it's looking brighter and Yeah.
Speaker 4:They're pulling them together.
Speaker 1:Yeah. Porter?
Speaker 5:I have former Colorado State head coach, Nico Medved in Minnesota beating Indiana at home.
Speaker 3:That was a great that was a great win.
Speaker 2:Yeah. Yeah. We were reporting when that happened last week too.
Speaker 3:Yeah. Yeah. We were talking about
Speaker 1:it. Mhmm. Yeah. You know, beating Indiana is
Speaker 2:A ranked Indiana. I mean, a ranked Indiana.
Speaker 1:Right? Yeah. Like, Indiana looks really good, and so that's a solid one.
Speaker 2:These new coaches, for the most part, are stunting.
Speaker 4:They're doing well.
Speaker 2:And I say for the most part.
Speaker 4:And that and that was two new head coaches Yeah. Matching up.
Speaker 2:Yeah. Now,
Speaker 1:onto I think it's time.
Speaker 2:A memorial. Not memorial. That's terrible. Yeah. To celebrate.
Speaker 2:Sorry. That's better.
Speaker 4:And and also a celebratory.
Speaker 2:Yeah. A
Speaker 1:celebration of life. Kellen. I knew it.
Speaker 2:And all of the all of the great things you've done
Speaker 1:because you guys are just going to beat me over the head.
Speaker 2:No, no, no, no, no. This is celebration of all the great things that you've done here at check the net.
Speaker 3:Oh, no.
Speaker 2:And you know, Colin, I've been able I'm very fortunate to be able to have sat here for four seasons and do this with you. So I appreciate you for inviting me, and everybody listen up. When you you and your friend talk about starting a podcast, actually do it. Because that's what we did. And so, this has a blast.
Speaker 2:It's been a lot of fun. What we're gonna do It now yeah. Is we're gonna make fun of Collin's picks over the past
Speaker 4:For ideally ten to fifteen minutes. Yes.
Speaker 1:So And the worst part about this that I will have to edit this, and so I will have to listen through all of this again.
Speaker 4:And also, remember, if you need fact checking on any of this, you can go back and listen to Cullen's sixty hours of recorded opinions, which are preserved for you wherever you get your podcasts.
Speaker 2:Or you can just check the conference picks episodes because that's kind of where I'm gonna be pulling
Speaker 4:these That's generally where they're concentrated.
Speaker 2:Yeah, generally where they're
Speaker 1:You can check the conference pick make fun of episode even if you were Yeah, got it.
Speaker 2:Those are fun ones. Is also true.
Speaker 4:At the end of the season we always have a conference picks review. So if you want like a condensed version of generally us making fun of each other, highly recommend them.
Speaker 2:Don't worry, we'll include Colin's picks in that episode, trust, I'm even though he won't be hoping
Speaker 1:to join on Zoom.
Speaker 2:We'll where it all
Speaker 3:goes. We'll include
Speaker 4:him. You don't deserve Zoom, we're getting you on Skype.
Speaker 2:So looking so looking back, one of my one of my favorites I can't really hate too much, so the year I'm looking at, I had a rough go. So but what I'm looking at is so back in 2023
Speaker 4:So your guys' first full season?
Speaker 2:First full season. It was me, Colin, and Derek. Derek, shout out.
Speaker 1:Miss you for real.
Speaker 4:This is one year PE pre Eli.
Speaker 2:Yes. Colin picked Fordham.
Speaker 1:Yes, I did.
Speaker 2:To win the big to win the A10.
Speaker 1:I I have that distinct memory.
Speaker 2:Yep. Where me and Derek picked I picked Loyola, and and Derek picked Dayton. Both of them tied for the top of the Big 10 of the A10. And and Fordham went four and seven Mhmm. And were 12 out of 15.
Speaker 2:Collin
Speaker 1:Could've been worse. My not my worst. Not my worst. Yes.
Speaker 2:It gets worse. So then
Speaker 4:Not much.
Speaker 2:The same yeah. The same year, we're just sticking the same year. Collin picked West Virginia to win the big 12, which in retrospect last year, that would not have been a bad pick. However, at the time, Virginia went three and eight in conference, and they were 13 out of 14 in the big 12.
Speaker 1:Yeah. So Collin has learned things in the last two years. If you can't tell Yeah. Collin's a lot smarter. They're actually letting him get a degree at the end of this.
Speaker 3:Are you sure?
Speaker 4:It's not in basketball.
Speaker 1:It's not in but it does have
Speaker 4:two Or in even statistical analysis.
Speaker 2:Oh, yeah.
Speaker 1:A little bit of statistical analysis.
Speaker 4:In basketball.
Speaker 1:I pass that class? Get out of here, Eli.
Speaker 2:And I and will I round out the funny picks from this year with Colin's MEAC pick. He picked Maryland Eastern Shore. First of all, I did not know that was a school.
Speaker 4:I had love you now.
Speaker 2:I needed a refresh. They went two and five, and they were seven out of eight in the MEAC. It was rough. Mind you, once again, Derek and I projected the the tie for the first place in the conference.
Speaker 5:Yeah. Sounds like some people know ball.
Speaker 2:Yes, go ahead.
Speaker 4:Let's move to last year Which is when I got to join the podcast and have all of my wonderful opinions consistently validated, and it was great
Speaker 2:right,
Speaker 4:but in our in our season review So we do scoring for Depending on where your pick places at the end and in our women's review last year Kylie won with a 117 points
Speaker 2:Kylie knows a lot
Speaker 4:about women I guess and second. 110 points, and Colin finished with 74.
Speaker 1:Yeah. Yep.
Speaker 4:Which is, even if you're not a math major, pretty far behind. Josh was there to kind of sit around and make fun of us.
Speaker 3:It was aka making fun of Colin for Yeah. Yeah.
Speaker 1:But And it was a valid. It was a valid.
Speaker 3:But there
Speaker 4:were two particularly stand out Two particularly stand out picks that lost him three points each because they both finished dead last in their respective conferences.
Speaker 1:Yeah, I'd like to comment I was the one who came up with the scoring method of dead last negative three.
Speaker 4:Yes, he
Speaker 1:did. And then it back fired tremendously.
Speaker 4:And I think we'll we'll start with the warm up which was in the Patriot League where I picked Navy who finished in the top half, so I didn't gain or lose any points. Kylie picked Colgate who finished third garnering her a point and Collin picked American who came twelfth of 12
Speaker 2:or whatever it is. Yeah.
Speaker 4:Unfortunately, it gets worse.
Speaker 2:No, it gets better
Speaker 4:for us. In the whack, last year, Kylie and I both picked Grand Canyon.
Speaker 2:Because obviously.
Speaker 4:Because Grand Canyon is good at women's basketball.
Speaker 3:The Shout out, Molly
Speaker 2:Miller. Yep.
Speaker 4:And the Grand Canyon I agree. Grand Canyon won the WAC to the shock and surprise of really no one.
Speaker 5:Well, Colin.
Speaker 4:Garnering Kylie and I five points each. Colin picked Utah Tech, who once again finished dead last. And I think won one conference game.
Speaker 1:The fact that I had multiple of those last year on the women's side is just really, really rough. Yeah.
Speaker 4:It's really rough.
Speaker 2:Also, you didn't have any none of us had any bottom of the conference men's picks last year.
Speaker 4:Some of the other on the women's side, there were four other conferences where Kylie and I both picked the eventual champion, and Collin picked a team that finished in the bottom half, losing him a point.
Speaker 2:Yeah, and notable ones There were lot
Speaker 1:of those.
Speaker 2:Notable ones which we made fun of Colin for a lot when he picked them and later on Stanford to win the ACC.
Speaker 3:That was the worst one.
Speaker 2:After Tara VanderVeer retired.
Speaker 1:After the After Tara VanderVeer.
Speaker 4:That was she
Speaker 3:retired. That was a bad one, and I even remember making fun of you for
Speaker 1:that one.
Speaker 2:Yes. And also, this one's my favorite because Colin seriously, I think, made this pick after me and Eli made ours. Colin picked Indiana Third. To win the big 10 last year.
Speaker 3:That was a dumb decision.
Speaker 2:I did. The all of the West Coast schools got added. You know, we have already had a lot of talent in the big in the Big Ten. Indiana wasn't was a pretty decent Big Ten team, but they were not.
Speaker 1:I think I was in denial about the fact that, like, the West Coast
Speaker 2:We're gonna schools be that good.
Speaker 4:But you picked Stanford to win the ACC.
Speaker 1:I just didn't want them to win the Big Ten. That's fair. It was a want, not like a belief, you know?
Speaker 2:Yeah, you were manifesting something and it did not go well.
Speaker 4:I I believe Indiana went on to lose to like They lost to Harvard in what I wanna say was their third game.
Speaker 2:They did.
Speaker 1:Yeah. Well, Harvard was also a tournament team.
Speaker 4:If you listen back to that episode, there's a lot of cackling.
Speaker 2:Yeah, there's a lot of laughing.
Speaker 4:So I'm
Speaker 2:sure. Yeah, those are kind of the the big ones from from the past two two years. So how do we feel? Let's make fun of Collin's picks right now for this year. Yes.
Speaker 2:Just while we're here
Speaker 4:because again, we don't know final results yet.
Speaker 1:Yeah.
Speaker 4:But we do know what's happened in the last five weeks.
Speaker 1:Alright. Before you start with Kansas State.
Speaker 2:Oh, I'm
Speaker 1:Oh, I'm starting
Speaker 2:Kansas State. Let's talk about Kansas State.
Speaker 4:We've talked about Kansas State and how they lost to Bowling Green last week. Yeah. Who just lost to Utah Valley
Speaker 3:Yes.
Speaker 4:At home. Correct. And Collin picked Kansas State on the men's side to win the Big twelve.
Speaker 2:Over It was so many good Big twelve teams.
Speaker 4:And we just talked about how the Big twelve has five teams ranked in the top 16, none of which Collin picked. He picked Kansas State.
Speaker 1:Kansas State who had a bunch of Memphis transfers?
Speaker 4:Memphis didn't even win the American last year.
Speaker 5:Memphis got the first round
Speaker 4:as a high As a five.
Speaker 2:Go Rams.
Speaker 1:And And their
Speaker 2:opponent was favored. Yeah. Favored going into that game.
Speaker 1:Which is still wild, but
Speaker 4:And you were like, yeah, these guys can win the big 12.
Speaker 2:I believe in them.
Speaker 3:Can I jump in? Because Yes, this is actually please, Josh. I just I'm just looking through.
Speaker 2:Can we I
Speaker 4:was on a scroll.
Speaker 1:I was on a scroll.
Speaker 3:Shall we talk about Colin's Patriot League pick?
Speaker 4:Oh, I would love to. Uh-oh.
Speaker 3:So we all did I say we all? I knew that was Kylie, Eli and Porter said Navy. I said Colgate.
Speaker 4:It's because I believe in America's Navy.
Speaker 3:And Colin picked Boston University.
Speaker 1:Has Boston u won a game yet?
Speaker 3:Yes. Yes. But to clarify,
Speaker 2:they lost to Maine. They lost.
Speaker 1:They lost
Speaker 3:to Maine. They lost
Speaker 2:pretty good. The four
Speaker 3:of us are doing pretty good when it comes to Patriot League. Colin, I'm a little concerned. Go Black Bears.
Speaker 4:You can't do that now.
Speaker 5:Luckily for Colin, the Patriot League is bad.
Speaker 2:Anything can happen.
Speaker 1:There's still a chance.
Speaker 5:Boston University, as bad as they are, is still a mid table Patriot League team. Yep. They are not as bad as the Bucknell Bison.
Speaker 1:Oh, I've got some good
Speaker 4:We should also talk about Cullen's West Coast contest.
Speaker 2:I was literally just about to
Speaker 1:bring We don't that have to bring that up.
Speaker 2:No, no, we do because I don't
Speaker 1:think that's that bad of a pick.
Speaker 2:Oh. Do you think they're getting close to beating Gonzaga? I
Speaker 3:don't think it's the worst compared to big but it's
Speaker 4:still pretty bad because Collin picked San Francisco.
Speaker 1:They just beat Mississippi State.
Speaker 3:Oh. Wow. Congrats, you beat Mississippi State.
Speaker 2:You know,
Speaker 3:just beat
Speaker 4:an SEC team.
Speaker 3:Bully or
Speaker 2:not Bully Green. Bully Green.
Speaker 1:Beating Mississippi State on the road is nothing.
Speaker 4:And Gonzaga beat Kentucky on the road.
Speaker 1:They did lose to Nevada North Alabama and Colorado before that.
Speaker 2:And Nevada. Losing to Colorado is a little rough.
Speaker 1:I'm not gonna Losing to North Alabama is rougher.
Speaker 4:North Alabama lost to East Tennessee State.
Speaker 2:They did. They did.
Speaker 1:Losing to Nevada by 16 is also My
Speaker 2:guy, it's not looking real good out here.
Speaker 1:And they they follow-up with an ACC or an A ten nightmare in St. Louis, like, at St. Louis.
Speaker 2:That'll be fun. Not for them, but, you know.
Speaker 1:Yeah. I know we're not doing Game of the Week, but watch that. Watch that one.
Speaker 5:Think I think I remember saying that there were two teams that you could reasonably pick to win the West Coast Conference.
Speaker 1:Correct. And San Francisco was clearly one of them. Nope.
Speaker 4:I really don't
Speaker 3:They're think it
Speaker 5:doing worse than the Pacific Tigers this year. Oh. That's okay.
Speaker 1:Yikes. That's really rough.
Speaker 2:No, no, it's okay, Collin. You know ball. Know all about ball.
Speaker 5:They're beating the Pac twelve. Oregon State and Washington State are worse than San Francisco,
Speaker 2:so That is true.
Speaker 5:Least you didn't pick them.
Speaker 2:Alright, I'm gonna hop over to the women's side real quick, and then low key, is gonna be a dunk on all of y'all but me, but Duke to win the ACC ding dongs. But now, since Colin, I gotta bring it up.
Speaker 1:Yeah. Yeah.
Speaker 2:Yeah. Kind of a surprise to all of us.
Speaker 1:That was a surprising one,
Speaker 3:you know.
Speaker 2:And and probably not just us. Because I'm surprised to, like, anyone who watches women's basketball. Unexpected, but still really funny. I don't know where they're gonna end up in the ACC. They could end up pretty far down.
Speaker 5:I think they're gonna be bottom third.
Speaker 2:They could yeah. Oh, I was gonna give them bottom half,
Speaker 5:but I mean, they should be pit. I'll give them that.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 4:I'd also like to just They
Speaker 2:should be Boston College?
Speaker 4:Yeah. I mean, quickly shout out to SOCON, the rest of us picked UNC Greensboro, who's five and five. Colin picked ETSU, who's three and seven, and one of those wins is over a d three school.
Speaker 2:Hooray. But, honestly, I think those are the big
Speaker 1:There's one more,
Speaker 4:but I'm
Speaker 1:not gonna bring it up. Where is it though?
Speaker 3:Where is it? There it is.
Speaker 4:The Big West. Yeah.
Speaker 2:Well, we all picked different teams. I really did not know, like
Speaker 1:We all picked different teams, four of those are in top five ish. One of them has not won a game yet.
Speaker 2:Oh. Long Beach State. Long Beach State.
Speaker 4:Beach State, which rhymes with o and eight, which is what they are.
Speaker 2:So true.
Speaker 1:No fault. Like, 30 losses to conference opponents.
Speaker 4:Yeah, and and the the Big West is one of those conferences that plays fall conference games, so Long Beach State is officially in last in the conference standings.
Speaker 5:I'd also just like to jump to the Horizon League real fast.
Speaker 4:Oh, I'd love to. Can do
Speaker 1:that too.
Speaker 5:Four of us picked Green Bay.
Speaker 1:Oh yeah. Has
Speaker 5:a winning record.
Speaker 1:Yay. Baseline. Good for us.
Speaker 5:Detroit Yeah. Mercy is three and five. They do have two conference wins.
Speaker 2:Okay.
Speaker 5:Yeah. They did beat Cleveland State and IU Indy.
Speaker 1:Hey, Detroit Mercy played a tough noncon. All right. That's Did? Tough ish. Day?
Speaker 1:I think.
Speaker 5:They beat Michigan. Yeah. And Wisconsin.
Speaker 1:Okay. There's two of their five lost
Speaker 5:And lost by 30 to Central. And lost
Speaker 2:by 15 to Toledo. Toledo!
Speaker 4:And lost to Eastern Michigan.
Speaker 2:Well, they got dominated by the Mac.
Speaker 4:Just just crunched
Speaker 2:Shout out.
Speaker 4:By the Mac.
Speaker 1:Shout out. You know,
Speaker 3:it's okay.
Speaker 2:Collin's like, if there's any conference that should be beating up on one of my teams, it's a 100% the Mac. Yeah. Like, out of all of them, it's gotta be that one.
Speaker 5:So Yeah, and they did beat Valparaiso. That's their
Speaker 2:Valparaiso. Third
Speaker 5:Yeah. Which hasn't won a game.
Speaker 1:Give them give them a little bit of credit, alright? The Horizon League women's is rough.
Speaker 5:But there's a Green Bay's, you know
Speaker 1:Green Bay exists, but like one upset. It's all all they need. Right. Sure. We're gonna come back at the end of the season.
Speaker 1:I'm going to clip this part of this episode.
Speaker 2:Colin, you're not sure, but you're not gonna be right. You can clip You all you
Speaker 4:can do whatever you need to do.
Speaker 2:I But think that's all we have for making fun of Colin. Colin, we
Speaker 1:love It's been such a pleasure. The last four years have been incredible. I'm tearing up over here.
Speaker 2:You make me cry.
Speaker 1:I had a bunch of stuff I wanted to say, and I'm now not going to be able to say it. But thank you. Thank you all. Thank you, listeners. It's been a pleasure talking basketball with all of you.
Speaker 1:It has been so much fun. I cannot wait to listen to this on Spotify. I can't wait to listen to all four of you on Spotify for Does the next
Speaker 3:that mean I have to go to the chair again?
Speaker 1:Yeah.
Speaker 2:Yeah, we're banishing Josh to the host chair. It's been Colin's chair, man.
Speaker 4:I can see Josh's face. Seriously, I never It's turn that's all the the way to the
Speaker 1:know. Colin has been sitting in this chair for the last Three and three and a half years. Yeah. And that time comes to a close tonight. So, thank you all.
Speaker 1:Yeah. Let's close it out, I guess.
Speaker 2:You got it, King.
Speaker 3:Go for
Speaker 1:it. Thank you for listening to this week's episode of Check The Net on Impact eighty nine FM. Let us know what you think by connecting with the station on Facebook, X, or Instagram at WDBM and at Impact eighty nine FM. This is our third full basketball season. The chaos is really getting going.
Speaker 1:From here on out, my friends will be talking about nonconference games and other basketball news and conference play. The season's madness is only just beginning, and I can't wait to hear about it more Next time on Check the Net.
Speaker 6:Welcome everyone to the first official episode of Check the Net, Impact eighty nine's new college basketball podcast. I am your host, Josh Gupprode, and I am joined today by Impact's own Kylie Tabler and Collin Pearson. A little bit about me, your host. I'm a transfer from the University of Akron. I actually graduated from Akron in May 2021 with a degree in sports studies, emphasis on coaching education.
Speaker 6:During that time, I was working with the Akron ZiPS men's basketball team. And here at Michigan State, I'm a games and interactive media major. Kylie, Colin, moving on to you guys, why did you guys wanna get involved to starting up this podcast?
Speaker 2:Yeah. So I've been playing basketball for about nine years, and I've played against a lot of, like, women's collegiate basketball players. So I think it thought it'd be really interesting and fun for me to kinda get involved in it, and I have a passion for basketball.
Speaker 6:Awesome. For sure.
Speaker 1:As for me, I'm not a basketball player. I have no hand eye coordination whatsoever. But I'm huge on the stats. I'm a bragatology nerd. That's kinda my thing.
