Shalom and welcome dear listeners,
Today, we delve into the wisdom of Pirkey Avot, Ethics of our Fathers, specifically Chapter 1, Mishnah 6. It teaches us, "Joshua the son of Perachia says, 'Make for yourself a mentor, acquire for yourself a friend, and judge every person favorably.'"
In our everyday lives, we often find ourselves in situations where we need guidance, a mentor. A mentor is not just anyone, it's someone who helps us navigate life's complexities, and simultaneously, helps us grow spiritually and morally.
The Mishnah also advises us to 'acquire a friend.' A true friend is more than just a companion, they're our support system, our confidant, our sounding board. A friend helps us understand ourselves better, and in turn, helps us become better individuals.
Lastly, 'judge every person favorably' is a reminder for us to look at the good in people. Each person we meet is fighting their own battle, and as we navigate through life, we need to practice empathy and kindness. Even when we are at odds with someone, we should strive to understand their perspective, thereby judging them favorably.
Let us carry these pearls of wisdom with us, as we navigate through life, making the world a better place one day at a time.
