Shalom, friends! Today we delve into the wisdom of our fathers, specifically from Pirkei Avot, Chapter 2, Mishnah 6. It reads: "Hillel used to say: He who increases flesh, increases worms; he who increases possessions, increases worry; he who increases wives, increases witchcraft; he who increases maidservants, increases lewdness; he who increases manservants, increases theft; but he who increases Torah, increases life; he who increases study, increases wisdom; he who increases counsel, increases understanding; he who increases charity, increases peace."
What a profound message! The underlying principle here is one of balance and moderation. Excess in physical and material possessions often leads to more worries and problems. However, Hillel teaches us that increasing in Torah, study, counsel, and charity, things of spiritual nature, leads to an increase in life, wisdom, understanding, and peace.
In our daily lives, we are often tempted to accumulate more and more, whether it's wealth, possessions, or even power. But Hillel's wise words remind us that true fulfillment comes not from material excess, but from spiritual growth. Each day is an opportunity to increase our wisdom, to deepen our understanding, and to bring peace into the world through acts of kindness and charity.
Remember, it's not about how much we have, but how we use what we have that truly matters. Let's strive to increase in Torah, in wisdom, in understanding, and in peace.
