The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

A trip down memory lane as Prince Paolo made his two hour debut just over two years ago on March 24, 2020. Thus, we decided to rebroadcast this gem of a show. Enjoy!

Show Notes

Originally broadcast March 24, 2020, this was Prince Paolo's original two hour broadcast with us on Under The Radar.  Prince Paolo leaves Gwangju forever this weekend, and it was a brilliant three year ride with him, two of those with him doing the full broadcast with Danno.  Thus, we decided to rebroadcast this season 3 debut show for this week's show, since some people can't even do what Prince Paolo does for more than a week, which says a lot.

FACTS Part 1
Oozelles- Refill The Swamp
• The Oozelles is a band from LA. This track comes from their upcoming self-title debut LP. What a strange and mysterious song that is also really catchy. Their music has been described as weirdo-punk, and I think that is a great description of this song in particular.
• The band says this is the first song that they wrote all together. They wrote it in real-time without any premeditation. The lyrics are about the collapse of a society built on flimsy foundations and determined to destroy nature.
• Their debut LP will be released May 1st. It will be released everywhere digitally of course but the band says they will also release 200 limited edition copies on “Coke bottle clear” color vinyl. Pretty cool.
War Strings- My Alien Heart
• War Strings is from LA. It’s a pretty cool alt/indie track.
• A lot of teenage angst in this one though, I think the song is about just feeling alienated and not quite being sure about how to fit in and be in relationships.
• Musically, the track is great, I like the drums and guitar solo and the vocals are also really well done. This track is the first single to be released on War Strings’ forthcoming album entitled Who Cares How it Ends.
S G Maniak- Moonlight Feel
• S G Maniak is an artist originally from Florida but who is now based in Brooklyn.
• This track has a lot going for it. Musically, there are tons of different elements going, the production is super tight on this track. I was also impressed by the lyrics of the song. He uses a lot of cliches but the way they are arranged still managed to surprise me a bit.
• Overall, the song has a “familiar but still new” quality that I think a lot of people might light. I’m curious to see what else S G Maniak has for us in the future.
The Caress- The Grave
• The Caress are a 5-piece band from London.
• The song is quite emotional, both lyrically and musically. The lyrics in the chorus are about visiting someone’s grave, making sure the flowers are checked up on. More than that though, I think the real meaning of the song is about remembering and reminiscing on all the good times shared together. That interpretation is not in the lyrics but I think it is there in the music.
• The more I listen to this song, the more I like it, The Caress have really captured the feeling of remembering a loved one who has moved on to the next life.
Sirens of Lesbos- Zeus
• Sirens of Lesbos is a quintet from Switzerland.
• I’m really loving this track. It kind of just floats you along as you listen. I would describe this sound as disco/ bossa nova song, very reminiscent of music by Sergio Mendes and similar artists in my opinion, at least in terms of song structure and overall vibe.
• The bongo drum fills are great and all the little vocal harmonies are also on point. Just a great song overall for sure.
Nina Chuba- I Can’t Sleep
• Nina Chuba is a 21-year old artist from Hamburg, Germany.
• Interestingly, when she was around 8 years old, she was actually a famous child actor in a TV show. She learned the piano in her youth and now she is ready to release her debut EP this year.
• The song is very well done, she definitely has some star power and charisma so I predict she’ll probably appear on future Under The Radar playlists for sure.
Part 2
Dro Carey- Clear to You (feat. Francesca Gonzales)
• Dro Carey is producer from Sydney, Australia and last week he premiered his latest double A-side release, Clear to You and Healer.
• Dro Carey collabed with fellow Aussie, Francesca Gonzales to provide the smooth and soulful vocals. He reached out to her via Soundcloud and together they have made a very solid dance track.
• Dro Carey says that significant changes to the arrangement had to be made late in the game but Francesca had lots of ideas and alternatives to help the project get completed. I think it’s nice to see when the main artist gives the featured artist props for their creative contribution. Typically, I think I as well as many others just naturally assume that the main artist is the one doing all the heavy lifting but we have to remember that it isn’t always the case.
Charly Jordan- Blackstrap Molasses
• Charly Jordan is an interesting person. She is one of those people that seem to find success everywhere they go.
• She is from Las Vegas. In her youth she was an athlete, playing competetive soccer and running track and eventually winning tons of competitions, including placing first in the Diamond Kid Triathlon. She then turned towards modeling and has become a famous social media influencer.
• Now she is setting her sights on music and she has released her debut single, Blackstrap Molasses. It’s an electro-house kind of song and its really catchy. The song has already gotten a lot of attention and I’m sure just like her previous endeavors, her music career should be just fine if she keeps releasing music like this.
Cobrah- Debut
• Cobrah is another artist who is making some serious waves. She is an electro artist from Stockhom. She was actually nominated for a Swedish Grammy as a co-director for her debut music video.
• About this song, she says debut is about introducing someone to a totally new experience. More specifically, she says there was a point in her life when she casually dated some straight girls and she wanted to make a song that captured the emotions they must have felt as they explored their sexuality.
• Cobrah released her debut EP, entitled ICON, last year via her own label, GAGBALL, and it already has over a million streams. She has also been tapped by H&M to do a placement in their online campaign for Ariana Grande’s “Thank U, next” merch collection. Cobrah is already kind of a big deal and it looks like she’ll become an even bigger deal in no time.
Muscle Cars- Don't Go (feat. Brandon Markell Holmes)
• Musclecars is a duo from New York City. The duo is comprised of Brandon Weems and Craig Handfield. Both of them are producers and DJs in their own right but I think they sound great together on this track.
• Don’t Go is their debut single and it features Brandon Markell Holmes singing those silky-smooth soulful vocals.
• It’s a really nice chilled out house song and I like everything about it. Very high level procution and an excellent vocal performance from Brandon Markell Holmes.
Catastrophe & Cure- Another Wave
• Catastrophe & Cure are a 5-piece band from Austria.
• This song, Another Wave, is their latest single and it is taken from their forthcoming new album. That album will be entitled Somewhere Down the Line and it is set to arrive on April 17th.
Karate Boogaloo- Slappy
• Karate Boogaloo is a 4-piece funk band from Australia.
• Slappy is the second single from their upcoming album entitled Carn The Boogers.
• I’ve heard a couple of cuts from Karate Boogaloo and I got to say, it is great stuff.
• I was also impressed to find out that this song was recorded to tape in their studio. Which is actually an attic in a factory in the Melbourne suburb of Collingwood.
• Carn The Boogers will be released on May 1st and will come via College of Knowledge Records.

FACTS Part 3
Black Beach Baby- Hold On
• We’ve played Black Beach Baby on the show before and I’m pleased to bring you their latest cut, which is called Hold On.
• It’s a very dreamy, jangly guitar, kind of indie rock. I love the guitar in this track, very catchy melodies going on there.
• The duo is comprised of Andy and My, and they hail from Stockholm. Their band has a mature sound that I really enjoy. It’s simple and straightforward, just very pleasing to listen to.
Fika- Only One
• Fika is another band that we’ve played on a previous episode of Under The Radar and they are back with a new cut.
• This track is the third single of 2020 released by this saf London band.
• It features Australian producer Jafunk, of course in charge of the production and I like what they have created together.
• Kind of off topic, I just learned that Fika is actually a common way to refer to a coffee break in Sweden. So you can say “I’m taking a fika”, which is fitting because I think Fika’s music in general sounds really good while having a coffee break. It’s just great, soothing music.
MF Tomlinson- You & Me Babe
• MF Tomlinson is an artist from Australia but he is currently based in London.
• This track, You & Me Babe is the latest and last single off of his recently released EP Last Days of Rome, which was just released.
• About the EP, I was impressed to find that MF collaborated with a very international set of musicians to create his EP. His flutist is from Japan, the bassist is from Finland, and the guitarist and percussionist is from Turkey.
• In terms of this song, MF says the main idea is that people are places and that you can experience love and friendship wherever you go as long as you are surrounded by great people.
• Unfortunately, we have to stay away from people these days with all this social distancing but hopefully, we’ll all be able to go out and live normal, social, lives soon.
Gentle Ivanhoe Death Skulls- Careful is My Middle Name
• You know Danno, while working on the radio, and from just loving new music in general, we come across some interesting band names...Gentle Ivanhoe Death Skulls has to be near top of the list when it comes to unique band names.
• This track has nice vocals and guitars and I like the chorus especially. Great song title as well. Interestingly, this song was part of Bandcamp.com’s most recent “Round Up” article, which is always a great source for finding cool, new music.
• Bandcamp recently held a great fundraising initiative. This past Friday, the site waived their revenue so that all the money earned goes directly to the artists. This is super important because these days, musicians make almost all their money from live shows and merchandise sales. With all the concert cancellations going on, this is a really rough time financially for musicians so it was nice to see Bandcamp.com do their part. Props to them for that.
Little Folk- Wire On My Teeth
• Littlefolk is the moniker of Toronto’s Brandon Pearse.
• This song, wire on my teeth is the first single from his upcoming full-length album, entitled Songs of Harry Throat. That album will be released on May 8th and will come via Blob Records.
• Littlefolk says that the song is about his early morning thoughts, which tend to be pretty deep. This song is a slow burning indie track with guitars that I would describe as shimmering. After a few listens the song did kind of hypnotize me, and I found myself thinking a lot about life in general. This song definitely has some medataitve qualities to it.
Medasin- Everytime (ft. Naomi Wild)
• Medasin is another artist that we’ve played on the show before. He released a 10 track album two weeks ago. That album is entitled RIPPLS and it is really very good.
• I haven’t played any dubstep music on the show in a while so I thought I would throw this track on tonight’s selection.
• As I mentioned, the RIPPLS album is pretty good, I especially like the three songs with featured artists. There is this song which features Naomi Wild and there another track that features Cautious Clay and another that features Duckwrth. Great work from Medasin.
Sevdaliza- Lamp Lady
• Sevdaliza was born in Iran but her family left the country and entered the Netherlands as refugees. She grew up in the Netherlands and is a self-taught singer, writer, and producer and tonight she delivers a great track for us.
• This track is very dark, it’s very unnerving but as you know, I do enjoy darker shades in my music quite often. She says the song is about a reflection on what her life could have been if her family had stayed in Iran.
• This is the second release from her upcoming album. She was actually set to tour Europe and North America but all her dates have been cancelled until further notice due to Covid19.
Part 4
James Rubiolo- How You Make Me Love (feat. Rosie Timmon)
• James Rubiolo is a Sydney born and based house producer. This track is his second ever studio single.
• He enlists the help of Rosie Timmon for the vocals on this track. Rosie Timmon was born in Ireland but is now based in New York City. Interestingly, the two actually met in Bali. They were both there on vacation and met on a night out.
• They created the song after that night out via instagram messages, building it piece by piece. I think that is pretty cool.
Limon Limon – The Way Things Were Before (Wake The Wild Remix)
• Limon Limon is a duo from LA comprised of Jason, who is in charge of the vocals, guitars, and bass and Rand, who is in charge of the keys synths and drums.
• I’ve heard a handful of their songs already and I must say, if you are looking for some classic west coast music, Limon Limon is your band.
• This version of The Way Things Were Before is the Wake the WIld Remix. Wake the Wild are a trio and they also hail from the city of angels.
• Judging by Limon Limon’s Soundcloud page, it seems as though a lot of artists like to remix their songs, which is great for us listeners because we are treated to various interpretations of already, solid original music by Limon Limon.
Louis Futon- All My Life (Where Is Alex Remix)
• Louis Futon is another artist from LA, and just like our previous track by Limon Limon, this track is also a remix.
• Louis Futon actually released a 14 track album last year. It was very warmly received. That album is called Way Back When.
• A couple of weeks ago, he released a remix EP of Way Back When. That EP contains 3 remixes and we have one of those remixes on tonight’s selection.
• Where Is Alex provides this remix and upon further research, I’ve concluded that Where Is Alex is super mysterious. Not much information on him at all, but I have to say that his music and all the visuals and artwork he provides is really cool. All his tracks have really cool cartoon drawings, he seems like a really cool guy hopefully we’ll hear more from him this year.
Lyrah – The View
• Lyrah is a writer, singer, producer and self-proclaimed alien from San Francisco.
• This is her latest single, its hypnotic, airy, and very soothing. And I have to mention congrats to her, this song was just added to Apple Music’s Night Cap playlist. I think that is quite an honor for an upcoming artist, especially when the playlist includes some industry heavyweights.
• I’m sure she’ll gain a lot more fans from that for sure.
Luka Kuplowsky- Anew Day (feat. Felicity Williams)
• Luka Kuplowsky is a quiet crooner from Toronto.
• Anew Day is his new single and it will appear on his upcoming EP.
• Actually Luka has just been signed to the Mama Bird Recording Co. His upcoming EP will be his label debut and that EP will be released April 24th.
• The EP will be entitled Judee Justin Arthur Mary. The reason for that title is because Luka will perform covers of songs from Judee Sill, Arthur Russell, Justin Hayes, and Mary Margaret O’Hara. It should be an interesting listen so I’ll be on the lookout for that EP for sure.
Lilla Parasit- Blasted Gems
• I absolutely love this track, it is so great. Lilla Parasit is a four-piece band who is signed to Sweden’s Rama Lama Records.
• The band describes their music as semi-psychedelic lo-fi folk which sounds kind of pretentious if you ask me BUT I would say that description is actually very accurate. They have a great sound.
• This song in particular is a nice gem. Musically, it is really interesting to listen to and I absolutely love the lyrics. The lyrics are a mix of serious social commentary and ironic comedy, I feel like the band put a lot of thought into the track. It’s a good one no doubt.
