Jen Porter (00:00)
Hey friends, welcome back to an episode of Lioness Women Rooted in Christ. I'm your host, Jen Porter. I'm a leadership and empowerment coach for ambitious and heart-centered women who wanna put God in the center of everything that we do. So welcome back. This week we're talking about our identity in Christ and what it means to be blessed. We are blessed when we are following God.
We'll talk more about that. want to start with again, why I'm doing this. What I've recognized is that we need an anchor for our souls. We will get way off course in our lives. We will become confused. We will follow things that are not actually good for us. We will pursue things that don't actually add to our lives. We will spend time on things that don't really matter.
in the eternal perspective and we need something that's going to help us root down and be super grounded in who we are so that we can contribute to this world in the way that we were designed for. mean all of us were created for purpose. There is meaning to our life and it's not on accident that we are living and breathing and having our being in this world.
in this decade, in this year, in this moment. So let's make these moments count. In order to do that, I have just found that we have to remember who we are. ⁓ There's so much self doubt that comes up when it comes to particularly women. It's what I see in myself and my friends and the clients that I work with. There is so much self doubt. Why is that important?
Self-doubt actually holds us back from fulfilling what we're created for. It causes us to be silent. It causes us to stay small. We don't fulfill what we're actually designed for. you know, we're not giving to our families in the way that we're created for. We're not giving to our communities. We're not showing up with the light that is inside of us when we are feeling doubtful about ourselves. That self-doubt is rooted in
not understanding who we are and relying on our identity as the world would define it. And so I want to differentiate today between what it is to be blessed in the world's perspective and what it truly means to be blessed in the kingdom perspective. Okay, one thing I want to say, I've gotten some feedback from some dear friends. I've asked for feedback as I've started this new season of this podcast.
And I've gotten some awesome feedback that I'm incorporating is to the extent that I'm able to. Thank you, keep the feedback coming. I want to know how this is landing. One of the things that came up is, you you'll hear me pause. And sometimes that pause is actually really intentional. It might throw you off. You might have thought, gosh, did I lose the connection? Is there something wrong with my phone? It's actually me creating space. I just did it there.
It's an opportunity for us to slow down and really reflect on what's being shared. There might be a truth that you want to meditate on and I'm letting that sink in. So if you hear me pause, know that it's intentional and I'm inviting you into a different pace than what the world typically offers or expects of us.
So I invite you into a more gentle experience, one that is not as rushed as what you might be used to. So I just wanted to share that, that that's a little bit of my style. You'll see that in the way that I speak and in the pace at which I move. So blessed. Let's start with what it means to be blessed by the world's standards. Usually when we talk about being blessed in the world's perspective,
We're talking about an easy life. Right, things are going swimmingly. Everything's good. We may be talking about wealth. We have more than enough. There's an abundance of wealth and finances and we're secure in being able to provide for ourselves. We might be talking about a pain-free life, a life free of suffering. I'm not suffering in this season immensely and therefore I am blessed. Or maybe I'm...
you know, we're talking about being admired, you being famous, a reputation that we may have. you know, he or she is blessed. Actually, that's not the way that the kingdom defines it, and that's not how I'm defining it as our identity in Christ. You know, when it comes to the kingdom, being blessed means being loved, pure and simple, and actually perfectly, perfectly loved, because we're being loved by a being who is perfect, and that is God.
Being blessed in the kingdom is about being chosen, being accepted just as we are. We don't have to clean ourselves up, we don't have to fix anything. We are simply loved and chosen just because God created us, just because we're breathing and we exist. We're accepted, we're secure.
That is so huge. I can't tell you how many people that I talk to when I'm coaching clients are looking for security. Most of the time they're looking for it in finances is what they're talking about. Like I just need some security in my life. And you know that is helpful to a great degree. I mean it certainly helps our nervous system and helps us pay our bills.
But there's a deeper, much more profound security that comes from being a daughter of the King. It's that, that's the anchor for the soul. Being secure in who we are, knowing what's in store for us, the hope of eternal life, and being in the presence of God forever, it's that eternal kind of security.
that is for our soul. That's what we're leaning into. That's what can change the way in which we move about this world because we come from a place of deep security. And the other thing is, you know, being blessed, we are free. We are free, not in the world's sense, but there is a freedom that comes in Christ. You know, it says in the Word that,
It's for freedom that he set us free. It's for freedom. Like God wants us to live with our hearts and our spirits and our minds being free. There's so much that comes with being blessed in the kingdom. So when it comes to the world's perspective, it really is about circumstances. How's my job going? How is my family? How are my kids? How are my finances?
What's the state of the bills that I have or my debt? It's all based on circumstances. What's my reputation? How are my performance reviews at work? It's all circumstantial and all those things can be fleeting. They can change on a dime. How many of us have been laid off? We thought we had some security. We thought we were performing well and then bam, you're done.
You've been severed. That's all circumstantial stuff. The kingdom is based on relationship. Being blessed in the kingdom is based on our relational perspective, our relationship with God. Who is God to us, not what is happening to us. And so God offers this, blessings upon blessings upon blessings.
He calls us blessed because we are his. So the world focuses on performance and competition and circumstances, but in the kingdom we're just loved, period. We're so deeply loved and so deeply blessed. Now why is it that some of us experience that blessing, that being blessed more than others? It's actually a mindset.
So our identity can become really shaky when we move into these things like comparison. Like when we're looking at others and saying, well, he or she has this and I don't, they're more blessed than I am. Or we might lose that sense of our identity when we're striving for something, kind of striving in our own strength.
wanting to force something to happen, make something happen, I'm gonna go after it I'm gonna make this happen. That's a striving sense and we might be stepping outside of what God is actually wanting for us. And when we do that, a lot of anxiety comes because we're relying on ourself in that. There's a self-reliance that can impede our ability to stand in our rightful position as a
a blessed daughter of the King. Fear is a big one. You know, we all wrestle with fear and fear can get in the way of us being able to receive what God has for us. We're so, consumed with what could happen, what if this happens.
not having control over what's happening in our lives or with our families. And it can really rob us of what God has for us. What God has for us never changes. It's always there for us to receive, but we're not always in a posture of reaching out and grabbing hold of it because we're so consumed with trying to make it happen ourselves. Another thing that gets in the way is shame.
Man, how many times has our self-worth been just demolished because of shame? And it's something that we carry with us, and yet it's like this old baggage that is just a heavy weight that is not serving us in any way.
And yet we keep carrying it along our journey because we feel like we have to sort of bear the weight of our sin.
and the consequences of what we've done. When what God says is you know there's forgiveness awaiting us all we have to do is ask God to forgive us and he is faithful to do that and what that means is that we can lay that stuff down. And you know I mentioned in the last episode when that shame starts to rise back up for me like I was telling a friend yesterday it can come back to me in an instant something that may have happened 25 years ago.
It comes back into my mind. Why is it there? Why did it come back? Well, for whatever reason it came back, I speak the name of Jesus. That's how I intercept that shame cycle. I just call out the name of Jesus. And what that does for me is it reminds me of who's I am. It reminds me of what is available to me. Forgiveness, redemption.
renewal, restoration, and that his power, the power of Jesus is bigger, greater than whatever I've done or whatever I've been through, whatever I'm carrying. I get to lay that down again and when it creeps back in I just say Jesus to remind my own soul, hey that's been paid for, it's been bought.
I don't need to carry that anymore. So all these things can get in the way of us understanding our true identity in Christ. So those barriers, you know, ⁓ it's a moment by moment decision to repent, right? That turning away from our old ways and turning back to the face of God.
And so some ways that we can do that, I'll give you some application for this. You can ask yourself, where has God been good today?
You may even want to pause this. You just hit the pause button, take all the time that you need. I'll be here when you get back. And ask yourself, really reflect, where has God been good today?
Another question you can ask yourself, where might I need to let go of control and surrender to God again? What am I holding onto? What do I have a tight grip on that I need to let go of and surrender that to God again, again and again and again?
So I talked about in the last episode the metaphor of adoption. You when parents adopt a child, they lavish that child with love and warmth and care and security and all the provision that they can possibly give. And that child's really done nothing to deserve it. It's the same, it's similar. It's similar in the kingdom. We've really done nothing to deserve what God offers us. We don't deserve it.
but his love is so much greater than anything that this world could offer. It's hard to grasp and understand, but it's there. It's just true that he loves us so deeply. And so all we have to do is turn and receive what he has for us. You know, sometimes it's as simple as asking God in the middle of your day, you know, God, I want to receive the peace that you're offering me.
That may be challenging. It may not come easily to you, but God can actually transform everything. And with the help of the Holy Spirit, He can help you even to receive of His goodness.
He helps us in all things. helps us, you we couldn't be saved without Him. It's not our own doing. You know, He invites us in. That's the only reason that we have salvation is because He pursued us first. So asking of Him, Lord, today I need Your peace. Will You give me?
your peace and let me receive it. You sometimes I pray, would you open the eyes of my heart so that I can see you more? Would you open my ears so that I can hear you more? Will you tune my heart and my eyes so that I can see the way you see? You know, today I don't feel very loved because of what I've done or who I am or
what's not working in my life, what's broken. Lord, I want more of the love that you say you have for me. Will you help me to receive and know, like deep down know the love that you have for me.
Use some of these tools to apply this as you step further and further into your identity in Christ. You are so deeply loved. You are the beloved. And you can't change that. There's nothing you can do that would make you more or less lovable to God. Isn't that crazy? Like it's so not based on performance.
It's just because he's so good. This all stems from how good God is and that defines who we are because we are His. We are adopted into the Kingdom of God. We are children of God. So we are simply loved and fully and perfectly loved before we do anything or say anything or think anything. Even if we are resisting that.
You know, I can possibly be loved, for example, if we said that to God. That doesn't actually change how deeply he loves us. His love just is. So use some of these things to partner with God.
Really, you know, when I pray, I would encourage you to pray and listen. Pray and listen. When I am listening most intently, I am in my journal, and I'll be honest, I don't journal a lot these days. Life just doesn't allow a whole lot of space for that. Or maybe I should say I haven't created the space for that. But when I do, I write the word listen on the piece of paper.
in my journal and I underline it and I stop talking, you know, even in my head. I try to let myself stop being the communicator and I listen for what God is saying to me. I encourage you to do that. One of the things that God says to me more than anything else when I'm listening is, am yours and you are mine. He says, you are mine. Do you see what he's doing there? He's reminding me of my identity.
My position.
I mean, I am His. Do you know what that does for us to hear that from God? That we are His. He's claimed us.
Wow, I encourage you to listen because God may be wanting to say something to you that will change your day. It will change your days, right? And ultimately, when you do this over and over, it'll change your life.
So I'm going to leave you with a blessing. May you walk boldly in the fullness of God's love, favor, and peace, knowing you are deeply blessed and empowered to step into your calling. May you, I'm going to say it again, may you walk boldly in the fullness of God's love, favor, and peace, knowing you are deeply blessed.
and empowered to step into your calling. Thank you for being here today. ⁓ What a joy to get to bring this to you. This is my calling. I definitely feel like God has asked me to do this and to use my voice to encourage others in their walk with God. Let me know how this is landing for you. You can reach out to me.
I'll put my email address in the show notes and I'd love to hear from you. Share this with a friend. Share this with the women and girls in your life who need to understand their worth, their value, how deeply loved they are, no matter what they've done or been through, no matter the choices they've made, no matter what suffering they're in. They are so deeply loved and God is with them. So share this.
and I look forward to bringing more of this identity in Christ in the next episode. I'll see you there.
