The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

Tonight we play our favorite version of "Call Me Maybe" to start things, then it's two hours of all the indie you can stuff into your filthy audio muth with Prince Paolo.

Show Notes

As broadcast on lucky February 22, 2022 with plenty of extra classroom instruments for your podcast mania.  Tonight we mark ten years since Carly Rae Jepsen's megahit "Call Me Maybe" came out in The States, from where it just blew up into a monster #1 and the song of the summer.  Now, with it being indie night, we couldn't just play that fully played out joint, so we went with the Jimmy Fallon and The Roots classroom instruments jam to start.  After that, a great week of all new indie was had, with Prince Paolo bringing in fresh truffles from Nilufer Yanya, Rosie Charles, WILLIS, and Stevie Zita just to note a few highlights in a very worthy list.

PART 1 FACTS
Carly Rae Jepsen feat Jimmy Fallon & The Roots – Call Me Maybe
- Five months after debuting the song in her native Canada in 2011, Carly Rae Jepsen on this date in 2012 releases the single "Call Me Maybe" in America. With help from a video of Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez and other tween celebs lip-syncing to the song, it rises up the charts and becomes a worldwide hit. In the US, it is the song of the summer, topping the Hot 100 on June 23 and staying until August 25.
- More important than that, of course, is what we just played, which might be the best thing Jimmy Fallon has ever done on Late Night, as The Roots and Fallon covered the song with the singer using nothing but classroom instruments, which was broadcast in August of 2013.
- They did that classroom instruments segment with tons of artists and lot of them were good, but that one to me takes the cake.
Personal Trainer – POPSTARB!TCH
- Seriously, so little to go on here, it’s kind of ridiculous.
- I do know her name is Kayla, but where’s she from? No idea.
- Her debut came in 2019, and this is the latest in like 7 singles she’s put out since then.
- This cut is kind of a bop, though. Like a weird meld of a mid-tempo dance track with dream pop. She has a lovely voice, too.
Soap feat babychair – Vagues d’Amour
- We’ve featured this trio prior on the show, and this is their latest single. Interestingly, the group are based in Moscow, Costa Rica, and Paris.
- Waves of Love as it would translate features babychair, which is apparently more than one person, as their bio notes after saying enjoy our music that “we love blueberries.”
Kid Bloom – Does It Feel Real
- This is another artist we’ve featured previously. True name Lennon Kloser he’s based in LA & made a big impression back several decades ago in 2019 with the Lemonheads EP, which garnered over 100m streams across platforms.
- This would be his latest, which seemingly is a standalone as I see no larger announcement.
Willis – In Between
- This is a quintet out of Nashville that make some amazing dream rock.
- They just released the Locals 4 EP over the weekend, which dropped in full on Friday and are currently getting ready to go on tour, starting on April 1 in Charleston, SC and finishing in NYC on June 3.
Skinny Dippers – Wedding Ring
- I was a bit chagrined to read this…
- This is the project of NYC-based Ryan Gross, and this is the latest single from his upcoming The Town and The City, which is his debut album.
- He also enlisted the help of TOLEDO band members Jodan Dunn-Pilz and Dan Alvarez for the album’s production, which the artist says is going to be about his upbringing in Maine and later living in NYC. No release date that I can find on the album tho.
PART 2 SONGS
Sid Batham - Higher Love
Stevie Zita – Gganbu
Greek – karma
PTLA - My Best
Young Prisms - Self Love
Mae Krell - imposter syndrome
PART 2 FACTS
Sid Batham (“Bay Tham”) - Higher Love
- We had a funky start to part 2 on the show with Sid Batham’s latest single, “Higher Love” which comes to us courtesy of Good Love Records.
- Sid Batham is an artist from based in London and the new tune is a blend of old school and new school flavors.
- In 2019, he released his “The Demo Tapes” EP and he is currently working on his debut full-length. He says that his new stuff is much more in line with what he has always envisioned his music should sound like. He says that he records everything live now so the sound is rawer and more dynamic. I’m looking forward to hearing more for sure.
Stevie Zita – Gganbu
- Stevie Zita is back on the show with a new single. He is an indie artist from Toronto and I think he makes great music.
- I believe the title of the song is inspired by the show Squid Game because the song title in the official track image is written in Hangeul.
- Gganbu is something like best buddies, true comrades, or partners, that kind of thing. Musically, the track is wavy and hazy, just the way I like it.
Greek – karma
- Greek is an artist from Virginia. I’ve never listened to him before this new “Karma” track but as soon as I heard it, I had to explore his catalogue because I really like his sound.
- He is just 20 years old and he self-produces his music. I think he has some good vocals but I was especially impressed with his production skills.
- He is definitely an artist you want to keep on your radar.
PTLA - My Best
- PTLA is an artist based in LA. If you are wondering about the moniker, PTLA stands for Part Time Love Affair and it is the solo project of musician Matt Marge.
- He started his musical journey as a drummer, which is unsurprising when you take a closer listen to this tune. There are some really nice grooves and fills and I like the kit he has selected for this track.
- Now he is making music on his own, just him, a laptop and some vintage instruments and equipment.
Young Prisms - Self Love
- Young Prisms is back with a new track. We played their previous single, “Honeydew” about a month ago and that was when they announced the coming of their new album. The album will be entitled Drifter and it will be their first album in about a decade.
- Lead singer Stefanie Hodapp says that “Self-Love” is about her tendencies to isolate, cut ties and completely destroy her relationships.
- She says that this attitude was with her since her childhood but things started to change when she was 26. She had just become a single mother, she was living in San Francisco, and just overwhelmed by all the expenses. She says that she never really felt like she deserved a good life, but slowly she started to improve her situation when she realized that her relationship woes stemmed from the relationship she had with herself.
Mae Krell - imposter syndrome
- Mae Krell is an artist based in New York and just last week, she released a new EP called “Imposter Syndrome” and the track we have for your tonight is the title track from that EP.
- This track touches on important relationships and the way they have influenced her outlook on love and life.
- Actually, the whole EP is very intimate and introspective in subject and musically, it’s just some great easy-listening type vibes. Very easy on the ears for sure.
PART 3 SONGS
Molly Ringworm – Nana
DROPPER - Better
ROLE MODEL - if jesus saves she’s my type (“fuck” 0:26)
Freya Roy - Calling My Name
No Suits in Miami - Over and Over
Nilufer Yanya - anotherlife
PART 3 FACTS
Molly RIngworm – Nana
- Molly Ringworm is an act from Southern New Jersey and “Nana” is their latest single. The first thing I thought of when I heard this track was the 90s.
- The track is very reminiscent of indie rock acts like Liz Phair and The Pixies.
- The track is about the unique bonds that connect females in friendship. I love lead singer Sarah Holt’s slackerish vocal performance and I like that grainy guitar solo mid-way through the song as well.
DROPPER – Better
- Dropper is a four-piece alternative rock band from Brooklyn. I’ve had a peak at their other songs and I would say that their new single better is a bit softer than their usual stuff, but it definitely still showcases their gritty sound.
- “Better” is taken from their recently released debut album. The album is entitled “Don’t Talk to Me” and it comes via that band’s own label, Dirt Dog Records.
ROLE MODEL - if jesus saves she’s my type
- Role Model is the alias of Tucker Pilsbury and he is a 23-year-old artist originally from Portland but who is now based in Hollywood.
- His new song, is a love letter dedicated to his current girlfriend, Emma Chamberlain, who is a famous Youtuber who has over 1.5 billion views.
- Musically, the new track is a bit quieter than Role Model’s usual stuff but it still has a nice bounce to it and I think it is very apparent that the dude is very much in love.
Freya Roy - Calling My Name
- Sticking with the “love” vibes, we have Freya Roy’s new single. Freya Roy is a fast- rising, British-German, nu-jazz artist who currently calls London her home.
- Her music is sultry and refined, it definitely has that “grown folks” feel to it... it’s just polished and the production is pristine.
- She says that the song was inspired by a turning point she experienced while in a relationship. She realized that she had some really intense feelings of desire, and she decided to just lean into those feelings and let them engulf her.
No Suits in Miami - Over and Over
- No Suits in Miami is an indie band from Sweden. A couple of weeks backed we played “The Robins Song” and tonight they are back with a new single. Both tracks will appear on their soon to be released debut album.
- The debut album is entitled “Nothing Ever Happens” and it is scheduled for release on March 25th. True to the name of the album, they say that it is a collection of songs whose main theme is that nothing actually ever happens.
Nilufer Yanya - another life
- Nilufer is an artist currently based in London. “Another Life” is her newest single and it comes from her forthcoming new album. The album is called PAINLESS and it will arrive on March 4th via ATO.
- She says that this track is about just being OK with things and accepting that this is where you are in life at the moment. There is a cool music video set in tropical Sri Lanka, and even though the song is about being happy where you are right now, the video makes me want to go to Sri Lanka.
PART 4 SONGS
Rosie Charles - Green and Gold
Tom Lockett - Try to Fall in Love
Tiny Umbrellas - Please Don't Make This Weird
Beija Flo - Waiting for the Sun
Electric Sol - Closer Girl
Leena - Until the Morning (prod by Gena)
PART 4 FACTS
Rosie Charles - Green and Gold
- Rosie Charles is a London-born, Manchester-based singer and songwriter. Her new single, “Green and Gold” is a smooth neo-soul track with some slick production and great vocals.
- Aside from performing live on MTV and BBC One, she also has an impressive following on Tik Tok.
- She wrote that this song is about being a student and not having any money. She is studying dentistry but she often wonders if it is actually the right career for her. I’m sure a lot of people can relate with that feeling of studying something for something that you aren’t really sure is for you.
Tom Lockett - Try to Fall in Love
- We stayed in the UK with Brist singer-songwriter Tom Lockett. “Try to Fall in Love” is his latest cut and it is quite easy to fall in love with the tune. I would describe it as a vintage soul song that sounds like it is inspired by the 60s.
- This song comes to us via Magic Catus Records. Tom released his debut EP, “If a Heavy Rain Should Fall” back in 2017.
- He then took some time to work on another project so his new single is his first release in almost 5 years. Hopefully we hear more from Tom Lockett in the coming months.
Tiny Umbrellas - Please Don't Make This Weird
- Tiny Umbrellas is a 19-year-old artist who was born in Norfolk, but who is currently based in Leeds. The song has a kind of “cute” vibe to it that I enjoy.
- The track is about the awkwardness of unrequited crushes and the beauty of friendships. She says that the song touches on the idea that it is really important to develop and platonic friendship and mutual connection before moving into a more romantic relationship.
- The song will appear on Tiny Umbrellas’ soon to be released debut EP, which is scheduled for release in a week or two.
Beija Flo - Waiting for the Sun
- Beija Flo is an artist from Essex but now based in Liverpool and I am really feeling her new track. It is emotional and I would describe it as one of those quiet bangers that has some real edge to it.
- She says that this song has been in the works for most of her adult life. It has shifted and evolved and now it is finally out in the world.
- She says that the song is highly personal as it was inspired by all the hardships she has gone through. She describes the song as a sort of medal that celebrates her battle scars of life.
Electric Sol - Closer Girl
- This track is totally my kind of tune. I liked the song so much that I quickly had to explore Electric Sol’s other tunes and I was not disappointed. Very cool stuff indeed.
- Electric Sol is a five-piece indie dance-pop band that hails from Arizona.
- Musically, I think this song is pretty awesome. It’s got a deep house vibe with a bit of a retro feel to it. I also like the vocal duet they’ve got going on as well. Definitely check out Electric Sol is this is the kind of thing you are into.
Leena - Until the Morning (prod by Gena)
- As per usual, we’ve got a smooth landing to close out the show and this week it comes courtesy of Leena.
- Leena is one of the fast-growing names of the now thriving R&B scene in Bulgaria. She’s got a pretty solid following online and just recently, she released a new 10-track album. The album is called Labyrinth of the Subconscious and it comes to us via Stereofox.
- I’ve had a listen and it is very well produced and a very solid offering from the rising Leena.
