The state of hazing at Princeton ft. Elisabeth Stewart — Monday, Mar. 4

For the Daily Princetonian, I’m Theo Wells-Spackman. You’re listening to Daybreak.

Intro: Today, we cover a recent hazing release, a new cancer center at Penn Medicine’s Princeton center, increased access to the abortion pill mifepristone and U.S. airdrops of humanitarian aid in Gaza.

It’s Monday, March 4th.

We sat down with Elisabeth Stewart to talk about the results of a recent hazing-related release from the University.

In local news, the University of Pennsylvania board approved plans last Thursday for a new cancer center at Penn Medicine’s Princeton Medical Center offices. The plan will entail a $295 million investment, adding 40 exam rooms and 30 infusion chairs among other spaces. With the addition of an imaging center and parking garage, the total cost is expected to top $400 million, and will seek to make the complex a forerunner in the competitive metro area healthcare market. Penn Medicine has partnered with Princeton University researchers in the past, including during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Faculty labs developed and delivered thousands of units of personal protective equipment to the hospital during 2020.

In national news, both Walgreens and CVS announced plans on Friday to begin providing the abortion pill mifepristone in select states. CVS will begin filling prescriptions in Rhode Island and Massachusetts within the next few weeks, while Walgreens will begin filling prescriptions in New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Illinois, and California in the next week. Walgreens also announced plans to fill prescriptions in additional states, where legal, on a rolling basis. The use of mifepristone is legal in New Jersey, and the state filed an amicus brief alongside the Biden administration following the appellate court’s decision.

In international news, the United States began airdropping humanitarian aid into Gaza on Saturday morning. The drop was part of an ongoing effort to safely deliver resources to Palestinian civilians. So far, about 38,000 meals have been delivered, with the Biden administration saying that [quote] “ we will continue to pull out every stop we can.” The White House authorized the campaign after an incident last Thursday in which over a hundred people were killed during an encounter with Israeli soldiers. Palestinians were allegedly fired upon as they approached an aid convoy. Yesterday, Students for Justice in Palestine held a memorial event for those killed in that incident, referring to it as the Flour Massacre.

Today, you can expect cloudy skies, with a high of 57 and a low of 43 degrees fahrenheit.

That’s all for Daybreak today.
