The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

A trip to Croatia awaits tonight, with all the magic of two tourists who cannot speak the local language to save their own lives, Danno & Lizz Kalo battle through it for some amazing artists in Croatia and abroad that will definitely surprise you.

Show Notes

As broadcast November 3, 2021 with plenty of mispronunciation for your podcast comedy dictionary.  Tonight we open on a date that was highly anticipated in 1998 with hugely anticipated albums out that day from Alanis Morrisette, Beck & Celine Dion that all pretty much came up short.  So, we played something better from Beck to start, then went into our Croatian trip preparation for tonight, exploring some contemporary indie bands out of Croatia along with some artists that have surprising Croatian roots if you were not so privvy.  A great country of very brilliant and resilient people, Croatia's music is also very deep.

I.
It is 20 hours past midnight on another very crisp but beautiful day here in the southwestern corner of Korea, but no matter the weather it is time to take you on a trip tonight no passport required. Lizz Kalo is back for tonight’s second hour after acing her midterm exams, and this evening’s program is presented in very poorly prounounced Croatian as November 3, 2021. This is Danno packing my bags if only in our collective imaginations from studio 2 GFN HQ in downtown Gwangju, how do you do? As mentioned previously the lovely, talented and smart as a whip Lizz Kalo will be aboard flight TD050 taking off for the beautiful shores of Croatia this evening, and we have a few genuine surprises in store for parts 3 & 4. As far as people of the world go, it’s hard to find a more resilient, brilliant, and downright wonderful group of people than the Croats of the world, and we’ll showcase both local artists and those from the Croatian diaspora of the world for our programming tonight. However, it’s time to go through the history to begin things, and we’ll apply a bit of Novacane so things aren’t to rough for ya tonight. This is The Drop.

Beck – Novacane

The Drop is aboard the KTX & on our way to ICN tonight for our Round Trip Wednesday, great as always to have you fly with us. Our 50th voyage aboard flight TD 050 takes off for the Dalmatian shores of Croatia this evening, and as always we are excited to head anywhere even if only in our minds. But anyway, what’s up tonight, Drop Gangsters (Korean)? Danno checkin’ in with you this evening and ready to travel to our destination for tonight, and before we get started do forgive any poor pronunciation this evening, neither I nor Lizz Kalo speak a word of Croatian, just to get that out of the way.
We just started with Beck and a cut called Novacane from 2004’s Odelay. Now, tonight’s history is actually about Beck’s Mutations released on this date in 1998, but there’s nothing on that LP that would serve our indie rock purposes for here in part 1 smoothly, so we rocked that instead.
Now as to the history, this was a busy day in 1998 with huge album releases flooding the last days of big time physical copy album sales, which were Alanis Morissette's Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie (the followup to Jagged Little Pill), Beck's Mutations, Celine Dion's These Are Special Times, U2's Greatest Hits set, and John Lennon's boxed set. It should be noted minus the greatest hits sets from U2 & John Lennon (obviously), these were all pretty lukewarm albums although Celine Dion’s album was a commercial success.
So, in order not to start lukewarm, we played something off of Odelay, and we’ll explain ourselves further later, but right now it’s shameless self-promotion time.
#9870, @gfnthedrop, podcast details, etc.
So in hour 2 we really didn’t highlight too much contemporary Croatian indie artists and rock, so we’re gonna take care of that here in part 1. Up next we have Lovely Quinces to be followed by Gretta and Tus Nua, and we’ll explain all of this all of this and all of that side opposite the splat…or is it Split? This is The Drop on your Round Trip Wednesday to Croatia.

The Drop returns and we’re about to disembark at the terminal to check in for flight TD050 tonight but we still got a few miles to go before the doors open. Danno here studio 2 GFN HQ checking the mic & tunes every night from 8 to 10pm. Lizz Kalo joins us aboard flight TD050 bound for Zagreb at the top of our 2nd hour, and we just started getting familiar with some of the indie & rock style which is more recent from the former Yugoslav republic, so let’s get to the details...
Lovely Quinces - Welp (…this is the music project lead by the lovely Dunja Ercegovic and is a six piece band out of Split. This was the title tune to their album released last year. We’ll cover a lot more early Yugoslav rock from the 1970’s & 80’s in hour 2 tonight, so interesting to see the generational interplay between now & the founders of the movement.)
Gretta – Sutra (…this is a band out of the capitol city of Zagreb, and appeared on their colors & fragrances LP from 2015. The band seems to have been on hiatus since this LP, but just came out with a single August 31 called Nalbolje is yet to arrive.)
Tus Nua – Postcards With All Sorts Of Phrases (…this is an all-female rock trio also out of the capital city of Zagreb, and was part of the band’s debut First LP, released in 2017.)
Now let’s play somebody who you will definitely know to finish off part 1. Up next we’ll switch it up with a couple of very recent cuts from Lorde. She just released a covers EP of her Solar Power LP, all sung in the Maori language, and we’ll play the title track Te Ao May-rama, but up next is Te Ara Tika or The Path. Why are we playing this on a Croatian show? We’ll explain later. THIS is The Drop disembarking from the bus to check in flight TD050 Round Trip to Zagreb.
Lorde – Te Ara Tika (The Path)
Lorde – Te Ao Mārama (Solar Power)

II.
The Drop is back & bored, just waiting in line to check in for the flight while everybody seemingly has packed their entire apartment into 7 suitcases for each person travelling, but that’s okay cuz we got plenty of time. We just started with a couple of tunes from Nirvana at their historic MTV Unplugged concert recorded live in New York back in 1994 and released just a couple of days ago that same year. Of course, lead singer Kurt Cobain would pass just months later of suicide, but what is the Croatian connection here? We’ll explain further on the trip in hour 2...
Nirvana – Something In The Way (Unplugged) (….)
Nirvana – Where Did You Sleep Last Night (Unplugged) (….)

Moving along SM, #9870, podcast let us know …
So onwards and upwards we’re gonna switch gears into some jazzier stylings for the rest of the hour, as Croatia was home to an incredible jazz, funk & soul scene back in the day. Up next we have Michael Buble covering Nina Simone & Feeling Good, then we’ll go to Croatia back in the day proper with BP Convention and Jazz Orkester Radio to polish off the block. THIS is The Drop on your Round Trip Wednesday to Croatia in the time machine.
_________
The Drop makes the mic shake once again and we are into the final airbreak of our first 57 tonight. Danno here, checking my stuff at the departure gate prior to taking off for tropical warm Caracas on flight TD 048, which will disembark to start our 2nd hour. However we still have a few notes on the notes to note prior to in flight cocktail hour, so let’s get to that...
Michael Buble – Feeling Good (…the Canadian vocal stalwart right there covering a Nina Simone classic. The original was released by the High Priestess of Soul in 1965, and Buble covered it in 2005. A man whose grandfather was instrumental both in exposing him to jazz and taking the jump to become a vocalist, but we’ll talk about all of that later.)
BP Convention – Midnight Mirror (…this is a group active throughout the 1970’s and lead by Bosko Petrovic, thus the BP. Yugoslavia in the 60’s & 70’s had a very active and underground jazz & funk scene with a variety of Croatian artists in the vanguard of the movement.)
Jazz Orkester Radio – Kolo (Folk Dance) (…not sure as to the background of this amazing piece of music, but it seems to have been a regular program featured on Belgrade TV nationwide in Yugoslavia from the very early postwar days up until the 1970’s. What I do know is that tune SLAPS!)
Okay, so final call to board just rattled over the speakers in Croat, Serbian, Korean, and a whole bunch of other languages I could not distinguish aside from the Chinese. Before we head to Zagreb, we got two more jazz maniacs to feature. Up next is Gabi Novak with a tune from 1961 called Karavan, and the mighty songstress is still doing her thing at almost 85 years young, so big up to the wily Croation matron sensation. After that we’ll close with a long player by the Jazz Sextet Boska Petrovica and a song about the lovely Valeria. THIS is The Drop now boarding flight TD050 on our way to Zagreb at the half.
Gabi Novak – Karavan
Jazz Sextet Boska Petrovica – Valeria
