Show Notes

As broadcast July 28, 2022 with plenty of extra sauce to slather on.  Well, it's late July so we're having a barbecue to start the show tonight with some newer and older funky favorites, but maybe not the most familiar tracks if you're American.  Lots of African, UK, and French influences going on here with some Ethiopians, Russians, and Danes thrown into the jam for flavor.  For our second hour Dan Lloyd once again kicks down the studio door to rock out, with some amazing covers from St. Vincent and The Linda Lindas being big highlights, along with new tunes from Ozzy Osbourne, Dry Cleaning, Cigar, and many others to taste test on a record-setting 13 track throwdown from Gwangju's Rock Maestro.

I.
It is 20 hours past midnight as Thursday cools after another intense sizzle, and what say we have a barbecue tonight? It’s our Sampled & AMPED Thursday, and not sure why this is, but when summer is at it’s peak, it’s time to fire up the grill, so that’s what we got for our funk & soul first hour tonight. Danno here on the mic, of course welcome welcome to the show hopefully sans any uncontrolled flames, and we thank you as always for joining us. So, we grill for our first hour tonight, and of course our AMPED rock thing is in full swing we hit the top of the clock again. Gwangju’s man on the kit Dan Lloyd will be back in studio 2 then, and we have a good bit of business to get through in mullets and smashed guitars realm after the hot coles die down. At any rate, I’m ready with the lighter fluid, so let’s light it up with Tom Misch and De La Soul, and we’ll do the yaddas after thing goes into the sky. THIS is The Drop.
Tom Misch feat De La Soul – It Runs Though Me
Quarter one of The Drop on your Sampled and AMPED Thursday has lit the grill and let the first balloon into the atmosphere as our Sampled funk & soul barbecue is in session for tonight. (Korean) What’s up Drop Tops, Danno here lighting it up for a summer grill special that you might want to add to your ingredients list for tonight’s first hour, and of course, the rock maestro will be back for our AMPED rock ruckus in hour 2 tonight.
To light the grill that was UK-based soul man teaming up with De La Soul on a track called It Runs Through Me. A truly self-made musician, Misch began releasing tracks on SoundCloud in 2012, and this appeared in 2018 on his debut LP Geography, which he self-released.
This album turned a lot of heads, suffice to say, and the proof is in the next album he released with drummer Youssef Dayes on Blue Note Records called What Kinda Music, one of 2020’s best LP’s.
Hard to see what’s coming next, but best guess is Misch’s next project will be both quality and surprising as the technique just continues to improve and his wings expand further into the reaches of the music world.
Just a quick reminder…#9870 (50/100)…stream
So, the grill is hot but we don’t have to blow up the place, so we got some long players from Labi Siffre and William Onyeabor up next to make sure we seal the flavor, and we’ll talk about both of these cuts after the sparks have gone overhead, but for now THIS is The Drop on your Sampled funk & soul Thursday cookout.
____
Back at the grill on The Drop for tonight. What is the deal this evening, Drop Dogs (Korean)? Danno here on the mic in GFN HQ studio 2, and just let a couple of longer signals into space as the sizzle continues for our Sampled funk & soul cookout tonight. Dan Lloyd joins us after the halftime jump for our AMPED rock usual unusual, but for now we must tell you what we know about those two long roundabouts…
Labi Siffre – I Got The… (…probably the greatest song by the accomplished British artist from his 1975 album Remember My Song. The tune is probably most famous as the sample used by Dr. Dre in production of Eminem’s My Name Is, but there’s nothing like the original. Interestingly, Siffre’s father was from Nigeria, which leads us naturally into the next tune by….)
William Onyeabor vs. Hot Chip – Atomic Bomb (…for those unfamiliar, this was the title track to the famed Nigerian musician’s 1978 album, although this is a cover version of the tune by Hot Chip released in 2014. Hot Chip produced Ibibio Sound Machine’s latest album from this year that you have to check out called Electricity that you absolutely have to check out, just in case you haven’t.)
Quick …#9870, social media.
Moving towards the first break tonight, we’ll go big to end with Mr Jukes and BJ The Chicago Kid teaming up on a tune called Angels/Your Love, which was dropped on the God First LP from 2017. THIS is The Drop on your Sampled funk & soul Thursday night and we’ll see you shortly in part 2.
Mr Jukes feat BJ The Chicago Kid – Angels/Your Love

II.
The Drop commences the slow burn 2nd quarter for tonight’s Sampled funk & soul first half. Danno here tempering the flame on the grill a bit to start part 2, coming at you from studio 2, GFN HQ. Gwangju’s Lord of the Drums Dan Lloyd is up after part 2 for our AMPED 2nd half tonight so know that necks will be snapped, but with loving care, it must be noted. To the recap of what you just heard, that was...
Coubo – Myrrh (…well, we started with Tom Misch, and here’s another self-made musician out of Russia who’s definitely blazing their own trail. This quite popular tune was released in 2015 on the artist’s debut album Selcouth, and Coubo has dropped 4 LP’s since as well.)
Galimatias – Blowback (…another artist who came up about the same time is Galimatias, who was born in Denmark and now calls LA home. This tune was a standalone single from 2017, a devastatingly delicious combination of lo-fi and doo-wop soul.)
Now moving along, we got a few more cuts to keep the slow burn going in case anybody wants 2nds or 3rds, so to do just that we got joints from FKJ, Crayon, and DJ Cam to keep the heat intense but not overbearing. THIS is The Drop on your Sampled funk & soul Thursday.
__________
The Drop continues along towards the halftime team talk as we keep grillin’ on our Sampled summer barbecue special, although the coles glow til 9 tonight. What’s happening, Drop Gangsters? (Kor) Danno here sealing in the flavor before Dan Lloyd joins us in hour 2 for our weekly AMPED rock dose. As far as that last triad of tunes, let’s get specific on the sonics right now...
FKJ – Better Give U Up (…a little joint off the artist’s debut album from 2017, eponymous as it were as FKJ stands for French Kiwi Juice. True name Vincent Fenton, the artist has built a massive name using ableton live loops in his concerts, from which he shows off his deft multi-instrumental skills.)
Crayon – After The Tone (Duñe remix) (…staying in France with this one, the main artist Crayon is a former illustrator out of Paris making music in his bedroom. Eventually, the following and love he got for these first works got true name Lauren signed with Kitsune.)
DJ Cam – Soulshine (…and to complete the French connection, who else could we possibly go with other than the maestro of downtempo and jazzy beats from France in DJ Cam. This tune is the title track to Cam’s LP that dropped in 2005, a classic if you are not so initiated.)
Moving along to halftime, we’ll have to fondly depart France for now, but head back to Africa for the finality of our geographically diverse barbecue sesh. We’ll close jazzy with Mulatu Astatke and The Black Jesus Experience, and this tune is called Mascaram Setaba. That’s gonna do it as far as first half sounds, but do stay tuned as Dan Lloyd throws rocks shortly. This is The Drop at the half.
Mulatu Astatke & The Black Jesus Experience – Mascaram Setaba

Ozzy Osbourne – Degradation Rules ft Tony Iommi
Ozzy Osbourne has unveiled “Degradation Rules” as the latest single from his upcoming album, Patient Number 9, and this one features fellow Black Sabbath legend Tony Iommi on guitar.
The track just might be the closest tune we get to a new Black Sabbath song following the iconic metal band’s final album, 13, which was released nine years ago. Iommi once again proves why he’s the lord of the riff, while Ozzy delivers his signature haunting vocals. Meanwhile, Chad Smith and Robert Trujillo handle drum and bass duties on the track, respectively.
“Degradation Rules” marks the second single from Patient Number 9, following the title track featuring Jeff Beck. Among the other guitarists on the album are Eric Clapton, Mike McCready, and Zakk Wylde, while additional bassists include Duff McKagan and Chris Chaney. Most of the drumming is handled by Smith, with the late Taylor Hawkins also appearing on the LP.

Pool Kids – Arm’s Length
Floridian indie rockers Pool Kids have shared their great self-titled album today (July 23rd), out now via Skeletal Lightning.
Led by the crystal-clear vocals of bandleader Christine Goodwyne, Pool Kids are a four-piece who blend elements of emo, math rock, and art rock into an amalgam of energetic, raw songs that have earned a coveted co-sign from Paramore’s Hayley Williams. On Pool Kids, the follow-up to their promising 2018 album Music to Practice Safe Sex To, the band sound more refined without losing their candid charm.
But Pool Kids almost didn’t happen at all. On one of the last days recording the album, the band were awoken in the middle of the night to a flood in the basement of the studio where they were recording, leaving their equipment destroyed, their recordings damaged, and their spirits dejected. Months later, the band finally reconvened to get back to work, giving Pool Kids even more of an emotional backstory. Its 12 songs navigate “everything to coping with trauma, the dissolution of romantic relationships, disillusionment with and shedding of friendships, and more.”

Linda Lindas – Tonite (The Go-Go’s cover)
The Linda Lindas have shared a studio version of their cover of The Go Go’s “Tonite.” Marking the first offering after their debut album, Growing Up, the Beauty and the Beat cut has been in the young punk band’s regular live rotation.
In a statement, the group explained their long-running connection to the Rock & Roll Hall of Famers. “The Linda Lindas started out as a cover band, and we’ve played more songs by The Go-Go’s than anyone else,” they said. “And even after we started to write our own songs, we never stopped playing ‘Tonite.’ We love the idea of us going out and owning our town, and ‘Tonite’ is as fun to play as it is empowering — especially the part where we all sing together.”
The band continued, “Because the cover is such a hit at shows, we decided to record a studio version to pay tribute to the greatest all-female rock band of all time, a crucial part of the LA punk scene, and our heroes.”

St. Vincent – Piggy ft Dave Grohl (Nine Inch Nails cover)
A couple of years ago, St. Vincent celebrated Nine Inch Nails’ Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame induction in the best way: by covering Piggy.
But that’s not all – the star recruited Dave Grohl on the drums for the badass rendition, which was unveiled as an Amazon Original in 2020. “To celebrate Nine Inch Nails’ induction to the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame this week, I’ve recorded my own Amazon Original version of Piggy with Dave Grohl (!!!) on the drums,” she said at the time. “This remains one of my favourite Nails songs to this day.”
And finally, as of today (July 22), the cover is available digitally everywhere, ahead of St. Vincent’s upcoming weeklong live residency on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert from July 25 – 28.

THICK – Tell Myself
Last month, the Brooklyn Band To Watch THICK announced their second album, Happy Now (August 19), with “Loser.” Today, they’re back with another single, the chiming and catchy “Tell Myself.” “As you get older, you sometimes look at your little-kid self and wish you could give them a hug and tell them everything’s going to be okay,” the band said of the track. “It’s not about minimizing life experiences, but a reminder that you’re stronger than you think and that—despite what it feels like in the moment—there is a light at the end of the tunnel.”

Dry Cleaning – Anna Calls From the Arctic
Dry Cleaning have shared a new song called “Anna Calls From the Arctic,” the latest single from their forthcoming LP Stumpwork.
Of the new track, the band said in a statement:
The lyrics were partly inspired by phone calls with a friend who was living and working in the Arctic. The song developed from a keyboard, bass and clarinet jam. This then took shape during our pre-recording sessions with John Parish and Joe Jones in Bristol and finalized at Rockfield studios a month later, with some musical inspiration coming from the dramatic scores of John Barry. The song is observational and sensual.
Dry Cleaning recently played the 2022 Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago. Stumpwork is due out on October 21.

Cigar – Legacy of the 7 Plies
Watch Chris Cole skate into the new CIGAR video with their brand new single, “Legacy of the 7 Plies.” Their debut FAT album, The Visitor, drops on September 9th.

Check out what the band had to say about their wicked video: “This vision of classic skateboarding is a tip of the hat to an era that shaped us. With every lyric being a description of a classic skate graphic, who better than skate legend Chris Cole to wield a mullet of power and bring this video to life.”
No need to front: You are completely forgiven if you are unaware of these Eugene, Oregon, skate-punk hellions. Starting in 1996, Cigar—vocalist/guitarist Rami Krayem, drummer Jon Sortland and then-bassist Jason Torbert—could’ve been a major contender in 21st century punk. Pennywise’s Fletcher Dragge was taken by the trio’s love of melody and straight-up acceleration, which led to the band aligning themselves with SoCal label Theologian Records for their Dragge-produced debut album, 1999’s Speed Is Relative. For the next six years, Cigar (who were named after the winning racehorse in the 1995 Breeders Cup Classic) lived the punk life by relocating to San Diego, appearing on some skate-punk compilations and videos while waiting for their lane to open. And during that time, the members’ lives began to change, from creating families to exploring other musical interests.

Teens in Trouble – Decomposing
Lizzie Cuevas' indie-punk project Teens In Trouble has announced their self-titled debut EP, due September 2 via Asian Man. It includes recent single "I'm Not Worried" and the catchy new single "Decomposing."

Osees – A Foul Form
OSEES have shared the title track from their upcoming record A Foul Form. Whereas the band’s previous discography has ventured into grunge and garage rock, “A Foul Form” is hyper, psychedelic punk.
Clocking in at just under two minutes, the visceral track is mesmerizing and hypnotic, demanding your full attention for its entirety. “A Foul Form” begins and ends with an unrelenting guitar that speaks to its true punk rock nature, walking the fine line between control and chaos.
Though the powerful and energetic song stands on its own, the accompanying visual elevates it to another level. The music video is reminiscent of ’70s sci-fi and leans into the track’s darkness while setting the tone for A Foul Form.
“The sound is in the slurry of the rest of the album and is basically about the craven, selfish side of humanity,” OSEES frontman John Dwyer tells Consequence. “Greed and fear-based decision-making have brought us here.”

No Trigger – No Tattoos

No Trigger have announced that they will be releasing a new album. The album is called Dr. Album and will be out August 26 via Red Scare Industries. The band have also released a video that was directed by Dan O'Connor for their new song "No Tattoos". No Trigger released their EP Acid Lord earlier this year and will be touring Europe this summer.

The Garden – Orange County Punk Rock Legend
Southern California band The Garden have announced their new album, Horseshit on Route 66, due out September 8th.
The album marks twin brothers Wyatt & Fletcher Shears first independent release since a run of critically acclaimed records with Epitaph, and their most blistering collection yet. Lead single "Orange County Punk Rock Legend" combines sunny guitars and bit-crushed drums over a snarling hook.
The song "was written in the back of an old restaurant called Yang Ming" explains Wyatt, "I decided to write it after being slapped by the old cook." The video finds the band in full jester attire, ripping it up at the skatepark while a towering clown looms in the background. PAPER Magazine described called it "as playful as it is nihilistic" in their premiere of the video.

Built to Spill – Spiderweb
Later this summer, Doug Martsch’s long-running indie rock institution Built To Spill will return with When The Wind Forgets Your Name, their first album for new home Sub Pop. This time around, Martsch is backed up by Lê Almeida and João Cases, two members of the Brazilian jazz-rock band Oruã, but all the early tracks from the album still sound very much like classic Built To Spill.

We’ve already posted the early When The Wind Forgets Your Name singles “Gonna Lose,” “Understood,” and “Fool’s Gold,” and now BTS — the real BTS — have shared another track. “Spiderweb” is not a No Doubt cover. Instead, it’s a pretty, expansive guitar rocker that effortlessly eases into a bunch of blazing solos. It lasts for five and a half minutes — not too long, not too short, just the right length to fully establish a vibe.

Palm – Feathers
It’s been a good long while since we heard from Palm, but the Philly experimental indie rock band is far from defunct. In fact, they’re about to release a new album for a new record label. Palm have linked with Saddle Creek for Nicks And Grazes, their first album since 2018’s Rock Island. Today they make their grand return with “Feathers,” a clattering and off-kilter track that suggests Palm held onto their unique alchemy in the interim between releases.
The rhythm here, while not erroneous, is certainly not anything conventional — a Palm hallmark. In his statement, bassist Gerassimos Livitsanos calls this “an undanceable dance song.” Perhaps it adheres to “the logic of feathers”? Here’s more from Livitsanos:
“Feathers” went through a few drafts – I was initially playing a plodding line on the bass guitar but something about the arrangement wasn’t working. It was only once I switched to bass synth that there was a strong enough center for the atonal guitar and synth pads to make sense. The first one we tracked in the studio, “Feathers” became an undanceable dance song at the last minute.
