[0:00] What happened at the Canadian Grand Prix and was it any good? This is Blind Corners!

[0:12] Hello everybody, welcome back. We just wrapped up the Canadian Grand Prix about two hours ago or so. I'm bustling with stuff to talk about. We thought it would be a wet race. I saw a forecast that said 70% chance of rain. That ended up not really happening. There was some wetness near the start of the race which ended up being a bad strategy call for a lot of teams but it was an exciting race there was a lot of close battling these and battles that like lasted a really long time there were a lot of penalties that it's kind of hard to to keep track of i don't know if you felt that way i thought it was hard to keep track of them but a shout out we respect the tv director in this house shout out to the tv crew who did recaps of all of the different penalty offenses that uh the different drivers did near the end of the race it was it was great to see because a lot of stuff happened off camera in the back of the pack and that's a result of having great battles for a really long time it was great one thing i did notice was a total lack of commentary about energy levels and recharging did anybody else feel like they just they didn't talk about it really at all i have felt frustration in a lot of the other races this season when it was all just constantly the battery, the batteries, recharging his batteries, using his battery, deploying the battery. And it was all the time. It was constantly. So I appreciate that that wasn't just the line that kept getting said. I think if I was optimistic about this lack of conversation in the commentary.

[1:40] But the optimistic view is that these regulation refinements are working and we finally have classic F1 racing again. A more cynical read would maybe say that this sounds like a top-down directive from Formula One media. Stop talking about the battery. They don't like the battery. The battery's woke. Stop talking about the battery. And we're talking about it all the time. Either way, I'm glad. I'm glad that we didn't have much. Going to the race start, it was a really strong start for Norris and for Hamilton.

[2:10] For Norris, unfortunately, and for Piastri, they, along with a few other racers, ended up starting on the intermediate wet tire, which was a bad call. It was not the right call. They knew it was not the right call from the three formation laps that they

[2:23] had to do. But the first half of the race was exciting. From about lap 14 until Russell ended up retiring on lap 30.

[2:32] Antonelli and Russell were duking it out. It was great. Lap after lap, into the corners, and, you know, Kimmy, Kimmy's hungry. Kimmy's hungry and he showed it. It was just so tense, all the off-track moments. It even kind of looked like Russell's retirement may have been because of the racing, the battling between the two of them. But I think looking at the replay, it was pretty clear he had a mechanical problem before he ran through the grass. But it certainly looked like it. And when Russell retired, I was like, okay, well, that was a good race.

[3:03] We had a good race, everybody. 50% of our race being good, we got it. we will see you two weeks but but it wasn't like 20 laps later hamilton got on the radio and said i'm making a charge for verstappen and he and he fucking did he was what two seconds yeah he was two seconds behind max when he sort of made the call give me more power and that was another like great protracted but it went basically to the end until about lap 67 and And it was a really, really well-earned fight. It was a fantastic defense by Verstappen. It was great race crap from Hamilton to take the... I mean, we know that the Ferrari has been doing better than the Red Bull car this season, but it was great that Max didn't make it easy and Lewis didn't just breeze on through.

[3:49] Absolutely professional racing. Just beautiful. On the opposite end of beautiful, that was McLaren. It was a bad day for McLaren. Starting on the intermediate tires was... It was a gamble, and it was not a gamble that paid off. Oscar could only recover to P11, and then Lando had a retirement from P10, so he was kind of in the points. There was some potential there, but reliability issues probably should make a Mercedes, or at least their high-performance powertrains division, to really kind of take a look at what's going on. I mean, George and Lando both retiring from a reliability problem, presumably with the power unit. And George, I think, could be rightfully mad. He could be rightfully mad at the garage. He was in the middle of a fantastic fight. Same cars, very high level of talent between both of them. And then the car kind of farts out.

[4:37] That's just frustrating. It's the definition of frustrating.

[4:40] Going on a Red Bull, Max really showed off his race craft here. Bringing it to the podium was really, really strong. Yes, it did require both of the McLarens to retire and one of the Mercedes to retire.

[4:51] But you know what? He made it work. Max had a highlight. Low light probably would be for Isaac Hadjar. He took a couple of penalties, one for weaving on the straight and defending from Hamilton or Charles. Just frankly, just kind of not safe defense. And then he's being investigated for some yellow flag infringements. I think as of this writing that investigation is still going on. But the stop and go penalty that Hadjar had didn't affect his P5 result. It ended up being a pretty good result for Ferrari, a podium for Hamilton, P5 for Charles. I honestly was like not sure that Hamilton was able to make a move when he came on the radio and, you know, was going to make that charge for Max.

[5:34] But he found it. He found that pace.

[5:36] Who else did anything interesting? Alpine, P6 and P8 for them. Kind of a strong showing for them. Gasly's having a bit of a tough time.

[5:43] But Colapinto had a really great race, a good start. He was able to keep it in the top 10 near the starter really really good showing i'm very surprised that this team has been able to turn it around they were not good the past few years because they had that engine that everybody knew was not up to the power that the other engines were and so it's like if you're an alpine fan it's a good sign that like the organization still works even changing the engine completely who else williams no aston martin no hass a point for hass okay Audi no a very anonymous race for them Cadillac also not great Valtteri got P16 aka last place and a DNF for Sergio Perez had a really interesting retirement on the live feed the commentators kind of speculated did he hit a wall and that's why his suspension broke we saw the the replay of him driving into the pit lane and right as he like crossed the pit entry line his front right I don't know if

[6:45] it's his suspension or what just.

[6:47] Collapsed it's completely failed but i went back and i looked at the on board from right before that and after the hairpin going into that final back straight perez is on the radio saying that his his steering is like not right i don't know if he's lost steering or if he doesn't have the same bite that he did but going into that straight he was complaining on the radio about it but he was able to uh you know coast it into the pit box uh without any issues overall a really exciting race And not just because of chaos, but really buoyed by two fantastic spans of racing. It really was great to see cars racing head to head, neck and neck for so long. And again, shout out to the I'm on that side of the TV crews. I think they did really, really great when there's a lot of battles going on, especially when they're all kind of at the sharp end. it is a priority, it is a triage issue of what do you put on screen and why. I don't.

[7:48] I don't love how complicated the broadcast product has got. I think it's good that they have the picture-in-picture window. They're certainly making good use out of it, but I feel like we're having a tough time stopping and getting... It feels a little like MotoGP. If you watch MotoGP, they don't stop and do replays very much because the race just keeps going. And it felt like that. There was racing going on for so long. We got to look at this because this is exciting, and validly so.

[8:16] Take a look at the championship standings. Antonelli is now on 131 points. That's 43 points ahead of teammate Russell at 88. Charles and Lewis are close, 75 and 72 points respectively. Norris is on 58. Piastri is on 48. Max ended the weekend on 43 points ahead of Gastly at 20. Behrman on 18 and Lawson. P10 in the standings at 16.

[8:38] I think George was talking to the media saying, well, this is Kimmy's title battle to lose.

[8:44] It's way too early to be talking like that. it's way it's way too early but it's this race what five like it's too early like i get it like mercedes gotta but for george like come on motherfucker you're in the car you're the one in the car if it was me i would say that i'm not the one in the car you're the one in the car anyway and that's the canadian grand prix how did you feel about it let me know in the comments i thought i thought it was great i thought it was great but please tell me i'm wrong if you like this please consider subscribing on patreon patreon.com slash lfgx four little letters a lot of exciting stuff hey thank you everyone for being patient marbles is going to be coming back this summer keep an eye out for that on patreon and on twitch we'll be back ahead of the monaco gp which is in two weeks time i've been blind bryce castillo and this has been blind corners.
