Worship service on Wednesday nights in the Chapel
And what we're going to talk about this semester is how to use God's Word as a template for prayer, as a method to jumpstart our prayers.
Tonight I'm gonna walk through Psalm 5, verse 3. It's one of my favorite verses over the last several months. And this is the verse that I use to kick off my prayer time every single morning. It's the very top card in my deck that I've got in Psalm chapter 5, verse 3.
I want us to walk through the contents of this verse, but then I want to walk through it and show you how we can use it as a prayer. And all throughout the time we're walking through it, you'll see how it can be so easily a prayer. But as we walk through this, I want you to see how you can use this verse as a prayer and many other verses just like it.
Now as we look at Psalm chapter 5, we know this was written by David, but other than that, we don't know the context of this verse, but we know in some type of way he's afflicted. David is afflicted and he is in need of help.
He needed God's help. There's many things that that could have been the reason. Maybe Saul was chasing him one time and trying to kill him and he was on the run. Maybe this was written during the time when David's son Absalom turned on him and tried to take the kingdom and tried to have David killed.
It could have been countless battles, countless wars. We don't know exactly what the situation was.
But these are the words that we see beginning in verse 1 of Psalm chapter 5.
Give ear to my words, O Lord.
Consider my groaning.
Give attention to the sound of my cry.
My king
And my God, for to you do I
Pray
What I love about this verse is that I love not knowing the context, because not knowing the context actually helps me apply it to my own.
There are so many times in my life where I need God's help, and like he says there, give attention to the sound of my cry. So many times where I need God's attention.
And this was, what we're going to look tonight, was David's method for getting God's attention.
And I believe it's a way that you and I can get His attention as well. So that's the title of the message tonight is simply that, How to Get God's Attention.
He says, give ear to my words, O Lord, consider my groaning. Give attention to the sound of my cry, my King and my God, for to you do I pray. And then he goes on.
In verse 3, to say these words, O Lord, in the morning you hear my voice.
In the morning I prepare a sacrifice for you.
and watch.
Let's pray one more time. Lord, I thank you for your word. I thank you for
All the truth that is packed into just this one verse, Lord, I pray that you would apply it to our hearts and help us to know what to do as a result. We pray this in your name.
Amen.
So as I, as I pray through this verse each morning, I, I love walking through this verse and, and taking time to, to pray through three different aspects of the verse. The first part I pray, and the first point for tonight is lift your voice to God.
Lift your voice to God. If you want to get God's attention,
Do what David did and lift your voice to God. He says there in the beginning of verse 3, O Lord, in the morning you hear my...
Voice
See, David made a commitment to God that his voice was going to rise to the Lord in the morning. He made an appointment that he was not going to miss. Each morning, God would hear.
Now this is not meant to be a ritualistic thing or a legalistic thing where we get up in the morning and we say our prayer and we check it off the list just to get it out of the way. This is a relationship.
And David was committed to having a real relationship with the Lord. David knew that the Lord holds all power and that he was not going to be found faithless in making his request to the Lord and bringing his request to the Lord. He says, Lord, I need your help. I need you to pay attention. I need you to work on my behalf. So in mourning, O Lord, you will hear my voice.
Your prayer is not just meant to be a morning activity, then we get on with our day. It's meant to be a lifestyle.
For us as followers of Jesus Christ, Paul wrote to the Thessalonian church and simply said these words, Pray without ceasing. Now that doesn't mean that we keep our eyes closed and head bowed 24/7 and never exit the state of prayer in that way, but this is a constant relationship with the Lord. In the same way when I'm with my family or with my wife and we're on a road trip or wherever we're going, there's a constant conversation that's going on between us as we're together. That's the type of relationship we're meant to have with the Lord, praying without ceasing, continually having this relationship.
With him.
But while we're meant to pray without ceasing, there is something special about getting up in the morning when you start your day, at the beginning of the day, and committing your day to the Lord and calling upon his name, to wake up in the morning and run straight to the Lord and to hear his voice and for him to hear your voice. Jesus modeled this type of prayer. The Bible says, and we see it several times in Jesus's life where he would do this. It says, rising very early in the morning while it was still dark, Jesus departed and he went out to a desolate place and there he prayed.
prayed
You know, this morning time, early in the morning, was not the only time that Jesus prayed, but it was a priority for him to hear from his Father and to make his requests known to the Father before he began to interact with the world. Like the song that Audrey sang, how can we serve the Lord if our spirit is empty?
And we need to come to the Lord and spend time with Him if He is going to fill us up so that we can go throughout the day. You know, the Lord knows what's coming up in your day.
You don't.
The Lord knows.
What's coming tomorrow, you have no clue, and the Lord knows what you need today.
even when we don't, we might think we know what we need.
But Lord really, truly knows what we need, and when we spend time with him, he prepares us in that way.
I don't know what you're facing today.
or any day, but the Lord knows.
And if you want to get his attention...
I encourage you to do what David did. In the morning, lift up your voice to him.
And when you do, the Bible says that God listens. I love this because this isn't just a where we're throwing up a prayer and we're hoping that somehow maybe it would reach the Father and maybe something will happen. The Bible is clear that when we pray, God listens. The Bible says in Psalm 116, I love the Lord because he has heard my voice. He has heard my pleas for mercy because he inclined his ear to me, therefore I will call on him as long as I.
Liv
Not only does God listen to us, he inclines his ear towards us. He bends down and he turns his ear and he makes eye contact with us as we pray.
I know all the time my kids are talking to me and sometimes I'm distracted. My kids know the difference between me listening and me not listening. And even if I'm kind of looking at them and somewhat responding, they know if I'm not actually paying attention.
We never have to worry about that with the Lord. We never have to fight for His attention. The Bible says that when we pray, that He inclines His ear and He pays attention.
And that's why David was able to say, O Lord, in the morning you hear my voice. David was confident that not just that I lift my voice to you, but that the Lord would hear his voice.
The Lord leaned in.
And he listens every single time.
That's why David was able to say, in the morning you hear my voice, Lord. But in reality, there are some here today...
That tomorrow morning, if you get up, the Lord won't hear your voice.
And there's a couple reasons given to us in Scripture about why God may not hear our voice, so I wanna give you two of them.
Why God does not hear our voice, and the first one is obvious but worth mentioning, it's because we don't pray.
In order for God to hear our voice, we have to lift our voice to the Lord. That sounds obvious, but it's one that we're all guilty of from time to time.
We get too busy, we rush through the morning in order to get to our list of priorities, but we neglect lifting our voice to the Lord and spending that time with him. It's really a ridiculous thing to think about the fact that we have unfiltered access to the God of the universe.
And somehow we think that what we need to do today is too important to have that conversation with him.
I once heard somebody talk about prayer, and he described prayer as a chair that God has pulled up next to him.
And the question that he asked, how often is that chair empty?
When God has pulled up that chair and invited you to come and sit down with him, how often is that seat empty?
For David, he made a commitment, in the morning, Lord, you will hear my voice.
Does the Lord hear your voice in the morning? Are you gonna pray tomorrow morning or whenever your morning is? Some people, if you work in the evening, maybe your morning is 3 o'clock in the afternoon. I don't know when it is, but when you start your day,
Does the Lord hear your voice?
I love this song. I never heard that song that Audrey had sung earlier, but the...
That phrase, I miss my time with you.
That's not directly in Scripture, but the idea is absolutely in Scripture that the Lord loves to spend time with us. He wants to hear our voice. He wants to hear from us. How often do we leave that empty? The Bible says in Hebrews 4, we'll jump to verse 16, the Bible says, because of the work of Jesus, let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
We can boldly come before the throne of God and bring our requests and find what we need.
When we need it.
And He'll give it to us.
But so often, He doesn't hear our voice because we don't pray. We do not bring these requests to the Lord. James said it this way in James 4, verse 2, You do not have because you do not ask.
I pray that that's not true of my life.
There are many things, even this morning, that I'm asking for the Lord to do on my behalf.
that are quite honestly impossible were it not for His working and for Him to do something. I do not want to be found guilty at the end of my life not having received what I wanted because I wasn't willing to take time to ask the Lord. And not just one time. I am just like the parable Jesus told of the widow who is needing justice from the wicked judge. And what did she do? Day after day, she came and she made her request to the Lord, or to the judge, until the judge relented and gave the request to the woman simply because of her persistence. Jesus told that parable and said, that's how you ought to pray.
And what Jesus is saying is that we just need to take the request to the Lord over and over and over until the Lord gets tired of hearing about that request and gives it.
Or turns our heart and shows us what we should be praying for instead. We do not have because we do not ask. So often the Lord doesn't hear our voice in the morning. We can't say, O Lord, in the morning you hear my voice because we don't pray.
But the second reason is, you might have unconfessed sin in your life.
You see, the Bible is clear that sin breaks our relationship.
With God.
When sin is at reign in your heart, when sin is sitting on the throne of your life, then your relationship with God is...
Harmed
The Bible says in Psalm 66, verse 18, If I had cherished iniquity, sin, in my heart, the Lord would not have listened.
Now I want to be very clear here. When you follow Jesus and receive his salvation, you can never lose that salvation. The Bible is very clear that you are sealed by the Holy Spirit, and you're not the one that did the saving, and so you can't undo the saving either. It is a gift of grace, and once you are saved, you are always saved.
But you can break that relationship that you have with the Lord.
And you can harm your ability to walk with the Lord. And if you are living in unrepentant sin, and I don't know what that would be for you, but if that's you, the Lord will tell you if you're a follower of Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit won't let you go without making sure you are well aware of something that's breaking that relationship.
But if you know of something in your life and you choose to harbor it and you choose to hold on to it, maybe it's...
Greed, maybe it's bitterness, maybe it's anger, I don't know what it is.
But if you choose to hold on to that and you will not let it go, the Bible says that your prayers will be hindered, that the Lord will not listen to your prayers.
So I wanna encourage you, is there...
A sin in your life that's preventing the Lord from hearing your voice in the morning?
I promise you it's not worth it.
I don't know what it is, but there's nothing it could be that would be worth hindering and breaking your relationship with Almighty God. He loves you. He cares for you. He wants to walk with you.
Walk with him.
In the morning.
Are you needing the Lord's attention?
Does he hear your voice in the morning?
Do you have an appointment with the Lord, a time, a place that you guys meet? Over the last couple months, there's a park near my house.
That is where the Lord and I meet every single morning. I go on walks around that park. If I don't walk, uh, I sometimes fall asleep. So in order to, to stay awake for the, my time with the Lord, I get up and I walk. Steve Gaines always said he walked on a treadmill because you'll only fall asleep on a treadmill once.
You'll never do that again.
I wanna encourage you, if you're looking for the Lord's attention in your life, lift your voice to him every morning. Be faithful to lift your voice to God.
Now the second step here, the second part of the prayer I pray each morning and the second part of David's prayer here is to prepare a sacrifice.
Now this looks very different for him than it looks for us, but it's still just as applicable for us today. He says, O Lord, in the morning you hear my voice. In the morning I prepare a sacrifice.
for you. Now, like I said, this is where David's day started different than ours would start in a sense, but not really. You see, in the Old Testament, the sacrifice...
of animals on an ongoing basis was a crucial part of their worship and a crucial part of their lives. Now I'm thankful because of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ that we no longer have to bring a sacrifice, that Jesus was the ultimate sacrifice that forever fulfilled the need.
for a sacrifice in our lives.
In Israel, there would have been daily, weekly, monthly, yearly, all sorts of sacrifices that were given to the Lord as offerings given and to cover for their sins and to thank the Lord for his provision and for his protection and to seek the Lord on whatever they were needing.
In addition, they had weekly and monthly offerings, and whenever they would have a festival, there would be many offerings given, and there would be also personal offerings that would be given. Each day and each evening, a offering would be given for the entire nation on behalf of all the people of the nation. Long story short, sacrifices were part of a regular rhythm for God's people in the Old Testament. Now these sacrifices are what made the people right with God. They cleared the way for them to be able to have a relationship with God. It was their form of worship.
So as David wanted to get the Lord's attention,
He says, Lord, you hear my voice, but I'm also going to prepare a sacrifice.
For you.
Now, what's really interesting, I'm reading tonight from the English Standard Version, the ESV. If you have maybe the New American or the CSB or several other translations, the word sacrifice is not going to be there. Many, many translations translate this word to be prayer. I prepare a prayer for you or something like that. The reason is, is because in the Old Testament, the word really could have gone either way because for an Old Testament saint,
Their prayers and their sacrifices were locked up right there together. In fact, the sacrifices that they would give would be a picture for our prayers today. As they would light these sacrifices, the incense and the aroma from the sacrifice, the Bible says, would reach up into heaven and would be a pleasing aroma to the Lord. The Bible says for us that when we pray, our prayers are lifted up to the Lord as a pleasing aroma.
And so while we do not...
lay down a sacrifice of an animal in the morning. There is a sacrifice, though, that we are still meant to bring every single day to the Lord. We don't bring the animal like David, but the Bible says in Romans 12:1, I appeal to you, brothers, by the mercies of God to present your bodies as a living sacrifice.
sacrifice
Wholly and acceptable to God.
which is your spiritual worship.
Our sacrifice?
It's our body, our very lives. It's the good parts, it's the bad parts, it's the parts that we're proud of, it's the parts that we're not so proud of. We're meant to take all of ourselves and to lay it on the altar every single day. I once heard somebody say, you know what the problem is with a living sacrifice?
They like to crawl off the altar.
And so for us, sometimes it's a daily sacrifice, but sometimes it's an hourly sacrifice when we find that maybe in the morning we lay our life down before the Lord and we offer up our bodies and our lives as sacrifices to the Lord, but maybe by lunchtime we need to do it again.
We are called to lay it all down on the altar every single day. And as I pray this each morning, I pray, and for a while I was praying and giving the Lord my mind and my heart and my eyes, my mouth, my hands, and my feet, and I'll go where you want me to go. And I really felt the Lord say one time, like, you're missing
some parts, and as I thought through it and prayed for it,
I realized that there were parts that I wasn't laying on the altar each morning. You know what there was? It was some of my disappointments.
It was some of my desires, some things I wish would be different, some things that I hope to be different in the future. All these parts of me, even the parts that aren't all that pretty, the Lord wants all of it laid down on the altar.
And because of his mercy,
When we lay it on the altar, he looks down at it, and you know what he says?
Holy
inacceptable
And that is how we worship. The Lord Jesus said that a day is coming and is now here when true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. He says that's the kind of worshippers that my Father seeks.
And so when we lay down our bodies, that is our spiritual worship, when we lay down our lives, and that is the type of worship that our Father is seeking from us.
Every single morning when we wake up, we must discipline ourselves to crawl back onto the altar every single day.
And while David offered a sacrifice of an animal, we offer our lives, God has always been about the same thing. It's never been about the lamb, it was never about the bull or the ox or whatever it is. The Bible says,
Through the prophet Samuel in 1 Samuel 15:22, has the Lord...
As great
To light and burnt offerings and sacrifices as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen better than the fat of rams.
What he's saying there is that how it applies to us today.
God is after our hearts.
And as we lay down our lives on the altar and we prepare our lives as a sacrifice to the Lord, what we're really giving him is our heart and all of who we are.
As we prepare this sacrifice, the Christian life really is a call to die.
So that we can truly live, Jesus said in Luke 9, 23, If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow.
Mi
If you want to get God's attention,
Then the aroma of the sacrifice of your life should reach heaven each and every day.
I pray, O Lord, in the morning you hear my voice; in the morning I prepare a sacrifice for you
For you.
And then I watch.
Watch with great expectation.
This is my favorite part.
Of this verse.
He says, O Lord, in the morning you hear my voice; in the morning I prepare a sacrifice for you and
I watch.
So often we say a quick prayer. We know we're supposed to do it. We check the box and we go before the Lord and we let him know what we need and we ask him to intervene on our behalf, but then we get up and we start trying to make it happen in our own strength and in our own flesh. We ask for the Lord to open a door and then we start jiggling all the doorknobs to see if we can get any of them loose.
David.
wasn't doing that. David was laying his requests before the Lord, and then he was actually expecting God to do something in return.
The idea here is not just a casual glance, I'm just going to watch and see if anything happens. It is a militant watching and expectation. The idea here is a guard on a watchtower, a watchman on the wall that is constantly scanning the horizon through the night, looking for a sign of trouble, looking for the break of daylight where they would be safe. They have their eyes peeled wide open and they're scanning constantly left and right, waiting to see what is going to happen. That's what David was doing here. He was lifting his voice to the Lord. He was preparing a sacrifice for God, and then he would lock his eyes on the Lord and wait for God.
To move.
You know, so often we...
We say we're gonna watch for the Lord to do it, but we get bored pretty easily. My wife and I enjoy if our kids go to bed.
In the evening.
We enjoy, sometimes we'll watch a movie.
But most of the time, it's actually Rose watching a movie and looking over and saying, are you awake?
And be opening my eyes and trying to pretend like I've been awake this entire time.
So, I'll watch a movie a lot of times at night, but I'm not really watching. I'm falling asleep. I'm struggling to pay attention. That's not the type of watch that David did here. This wasn't a casual, lazy, I may not make it through the night watch.
This was...
a intentional
a militant and a powerful watch in the same way.
That a farmer...
Praise to the Lord.
And prays for rain?
You know, the Bible says here that David was not just praying to the Lord to work and then just staying there and not doing anything and not working, not praying, not having conversations, not doing what God had called him to do. See, the Bible says it's very clear that there are certain things that we are called to do in the same way, like a farmer will plant the seed and they'll pray for the rain, but they're not just praying for a harvest and praying for a crop and praying for the rain and expecting God to do all the work. What do they do? A farmer will plant the seed. They'll till the ground. They'll prepare the ground in expectation that God is going to send the rain.
And that's what our lives should look like. Yes, we pray, we lift up our voice to the Lord, we lay down our lives as sacrifices, and we watch him.
But we also do our part. I like to pray in the morning, Lord, I'm watching for you to work with great expectation. I'm expecting you to do something, but I'm going to have my shoes on and laced, and I'm going to be ready to walk. I'm going to be ready to move. Now, like I said, that doesn't mean trying to make the thing happen on your own, but there is an aspect where God has called us to certain aspects of our life and faith and walking with him.
and entrusting Him to do the rest.
I don't know if you've read the book of Habakkuk lately. It's a book that often gets neglected there in the Old Testament. But this was exactly what he was walking through and exactly what he was dealing with. He needed God to move. He had a lot of questions. I love the honesty of the questions that Habakkuk asked the Lord in the book of Habakkuk.
And he asks the Lord to do these things, and why aren't you moving here, and why would you not do this, and why have you allowed this?
And then he says in Habakkuk 2, verse 1, I will take my stand at the watchpost.
and station myself on the tower, and I'm going to look out and see what the Lord is going to say to me, and what I will answer concerning my complaint. This is the attitude when David says, in the morning you hear my voice, in the morning I prepare a sacrifice for you and I watch. This is the type of watching that David was doing and that you and I are called to do as well. And that's real faith.
keeping our eyes on the Lord, and there are certain doors that Rose and I are asking for the Lord to open in our family and in different aspects of our life.
But how tempting is it to pray for the Lord to do that, and as soon as the Lord opens that door, what do we sometimes do? We take our eyes off the Lord and start looking at the door that maybe He opened.
But we need to discipline ourselves to keep our eyes locked on the Lord and allowing Him to work on our behalf.
God is generous.
with his attention.
He doesn't withhold it from us. The Lord is not trying to hide from us. He is not trying to make it difficult for us to get a hold of Him. In fact, the Bible says in 2 Chronicles 16, verse 9, the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth to give strong support.
to those whose heart is blameless toward him.
What that means, and I believe it's still true today, I believe every day the eyes of the Lord are looking all over the earth. And the question is, when he passes over Memphis, Tennessee, is there anything that gets his attention?
Are we calling out to the Lord? Are we preparing our lives for the sacrifice? Are we keeping our eyes locked on Him, knowing that without Him we have nothing?
When the eyes of the Lord look in this direction, in the direction of your life,
What does he see?
Is it something that catches his attention, or does it look like the majority of the world?
Just focus on your life and the things of this world.
You know, the Bible is clear that we are not self-sufficient in our own, but so many of us think that we are, that we can do everything on our own.
that we can make it through on our own, in our own strength.
But I wanna tell you, if you are not praying, then you...
You don't have the power that you need. And you might say, well, I'm not self-sufficient. I know I need the Lord. But if you're not spending that time with the Lord, then I don't care what your words say. Your actions are saying that you do not believe that you need that time, that that time with the Lord is not nearly as crucial as you might think.
that it is.
I wanna encourage you, don't count on yourself.
You aren't that good.
I'm not that good.
Sam sometimes thinks that he's that good, but...
I try to remind him on a daily basis that he's not that good.
We all must trust in the Lord because he is the only one who is able, and he wants to hear your voice.
He wants to hear your voice.
In the Old Testament, I love this picture of somebody watching with great expectation and believing that God was gonna do something. We read the story of a drought in Israel.
And Elijah, the prophet of God, had prophesied that God would not send any rain, and for three and a half years it did not rain.
In Israel.
And in one day...
The Lord reveals to Elijah that it's time. I'm going to send the rain. And the Bible says Elijah went to the top of Mount Carmel and he bowed himself down to the ground. He put his face to his knees.
He said to his servant, Go up now, look toward the sea.
And when he looked and looked again, he said, There's nothing. He said, Go again seven times. See...
Elijah knew that the rain was coming and the servant kept coming and looking, and there was not a cloud in the sky and there hadn't been for three and a half years.
But he was confident. The Lord had told him this was coming. He said, Go again, go again, go again. In the seventh time, the servant came back and said, Behold, a little cloud like a man's hand is rising from the sea.
He said, Get up, go to King Ahab.
And say to this, Prepare your chariot and go down, lest the rain stop you.
See, Elijah had his eyes locked in on what he knew the Lord said he was going to do, and at that first sign, the sign of a cloud the size of a man's hand, was barely seen in the sky, he told the king to run.
before he got caught up.
In the storm.
That's the type of faith that we're called to have. That's the type of watching we're meant to have on the Lord, and that's the kind of faith it takes.
to get God's attention.
Now, in just a moment, I want us to right there in our seats, and you can do it by yourself, you can do it with somebody next to you, I want us to take a moment and just pray through this verse, and I'll walk you through it here in a moment. But before I do that, I wanna point out one verse, or two verses there in 1 John that really talk about the importance. Why do we pray God's word?
why is it such a powerful tool for us to take the words in the Bible and use it as a prayer to the Lord? John wrote in 1 John 15, 14, and 15, this is the confidence that we have toward Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.
And we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him. According to John, if we pray according to the will of God, he will grant our request. Now this is not some magical spell, some way to use God's word and to twist it and to get our way, but when we align ourselves and our hearts with the word of God, and we pray the will of God, the Bible says that we will have every single time what it is that we request. And I don't know, I don't trust my heart, the Bible says that our hearts are deceitfully wicked, who can understand it? I don't trust my own heart, and the only way I know to align my heart with the will of God is to align my heart with the word of God. And so when I pray God's word, and that's why Steve did it all those years, and that's why it's such a powerful practice praying scripture, is because when we pray the Bible back to the Lord, we know that we are praying his will.
So I want us to take just a moment and pray those words back to the Lord.
In Psalm chapter 5, verse 3.
There it is right there on the screen.
And I'm gonna call it out, and I'm gonna give you just a moment to pray to the Lord, just a few seconds, and then I'll pray it, and then I'll call it the next one. And I encourage you to make this a daily practice this entire week. As you walk out the doors on the tables there, there's gonna be a stack of cards that has this verse written on it. I encourage you to pick up this card on your way out. Keep it in your wallet. Keep it in your purse. Keep it with your Bible. Keep it wherever you'll see it. Maybe tape it to your mirror. And let this be a daily prayer for you every day this week. And you know, one thing I found as I've prayed Psalm chapter five, verse three, I never intended to memorize it, but after a few days of praying it to the Lord, I stopped relying on the card as much, and a couple weeks later, I had it memorized without even trying. So if you're a person that struggles to memorize and struggles to memorize Scripture, I encourage you, take it. Don't even try to memorize it. Just pray it to the Lord every single day, and you'll be surprised how quickly you'll commit it to memory. And all semester long, each week, we're gonna look at a different verse, and we're gonna look at different verses that we can use as a prayer template that week. And I'm gonna give you a card each week that has the verse on it, and I'll encourage you every week, take it, and maybe even start to create your own deck of cards that you can pray in the morning through some Scripture.
