Leadership Toolbox is a practical series designed to help student leaders build skills they can use right away. Explore topics including communication, organization, collaboration, goal setting, motivation, relationship building and more.
Welcome to the Student Activities Online Leadership Toolbox. Today on Inspired Leadership, I will be talking about effective time management. It's important to begin by recognizing how you use your time. When you feel overwhelmed or stressed, stop and evaluate your habits. Identify where your time goes and where you can improve efficiency.
John Bulcock:Take control of your own day. Start each morning with intention, and write down or acknowledge everything that you need to accomplish throughout the day. Use that list to guide your focus and to direct your energy. It's important to prioritize the things that you need to get done. Label them or rank them based on importance and urgency and the impact they have.
John Bulcock:Identify your highest priorities and focus on completing them first and stay committed to the most important and impactful work. It can be a challenge to stay focused, but when distractions arise, you'll need to redirect your attention and return to those priorities and keep working towards your goals. We all can fall victim to time wasters. Think about those activities that pull your attention away from your tasks and try to limit distractions like social media, email, phone, texting, or other unnecessary interruptions. Acknowledge that you won't be able to eliminate them completely, but schedule them intentionally.
John Bulcock:Structure can help. If you can help build structure for getting things done, that will be of use to you. Use a calendar, plan ahead, record deadlines and important dates as soon as you know about them, and set reminders that will help you stay on track to avoid last minute scrambling and the stress that comes with that. When a new task arises, try to take some kind of action on it immediately. You may not get it done right away, but acknowledging what you will need to do and adding it to your list of things to do will be important.
John Bulcock:If you can prioritize them or put them in the order that they need to get done, that will help you figure out how to proceed. Avoid delaying decisions or creating unnecessary backlog. When trying to get things done, it's important that you're in the right environment. Choose spaces that support focus, reduce the noise around you, turn off your notifications, eliminate distractions so that you can concentrate fully. It's important to set boundaries.
John Bulcock:Learn to say no. Protect your time from unnecessary commitments. Focus on what matters most. All that being said, it's important to take care of yourself. Be sure to rest, recharge, and refocus.
John Bulcock:Maintaining your own health will help with this. A focused and energized mindset leads to greater productivity. As you move forward, try to remain consistent. Apply these strategies daily and adjust your habits as needed. Continue improving how you manage your time.
John Bulcock:And that's it. Let's review what we talked about. We discussed how to prioritize tasks, manage distractions, use planning tools, and to build habits that improve productivity. Remember to stay intentional. When you take control of your time, you increase your ability to succeed and reduce stress.
