A new report is raising alarms about Chinese influence in American education. The conservative watchdog group Defending Education released its investigation, "Little Red Classrooms," finding that at least 83 universities and 26 K-12 schools across 30 states have taken part in China's Young Envoys Scholarship program, run by the China Education Association for International Exchange. "These aren't just cultural trips," said Reagan Dugan, the group's education initiative director. "They're an integral part of China's broader soft power strategy aimed at infiltrating America's classrooms." The report notes CEAIE's charter pledges to "adhere to the overall leadership of the Communist Party of China." Congressman John Moolenaar warned the association conceals its ideological motives, while Representative Mariannette Miller-Meeks called an Iowa high school's Beijing-funded 2024 trip "a national security concern." Dugan says disclosure requirements must catch up.

Actress Hayden Panettiere, best known for "Heroes" and "Nashville," has died at the age of 36. Greenville, South Carolina police say she was found unresponsive at the Judson Mill Lofts apartment complex Sunday afternoon and was pronounced dead at the scene, with reports indicating her boyfriend and brother were present. An autopsy found no signs of trauma, and Coroner Mike Ellis says there's no indication of foul play, though the cause of death remains undetermined pending toxicology results. Her father, Alan "Skip" Panettiere, said, "She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her." Panettiere rose to fame as Claire Bennet on "Heroes," later earning two Golden Globe nominations for "Nashville." She recently released a memoir, "This Is Me: A Reckoning," and is survived by her daughter, Kaya.

A U.S. Forest Service law enforcement officer in Colorado has won a religious accommodation allowing him to keep Sundays free for worship, after twice being denied. Adam Diemert, a devout Presbyterian based in Glenwood Springs who attends church twice on Sundays, was represented by the law firm Davis Graham & Stubbs and the First Liberty Institute, which argued his willingness to work Sunday emergencies undercut the government's "undue hardship" claim. First Liberty Senior Counsel Cliff Martin said, "We are grateful for the leadership of Secretary Brooke Rollins, Deputy Secretary Stephen Vaden, and the rest of the leadership team at the Department of Agriculture, and for their protection of religious liberty for all Americans." The decision follows the Supreme Court's 2023 Groff v. DeJoy ruling and new USDA religious expression guidance issued last November.

A legal battle is unfolding in Texas over a baby boy born to surrogate McKenna West, a 28-year-old Alaska nurse who refused to abort the child after he was diagnosed at 20 weeks with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, a rare congenital condition. West traveled to Dallas, where Attorney General Ken Paxton secured a court order requiring "medically indicated stabilizing and life-sustaining care." Paxton declared, "Baby Gabriel deserves a chance at life, and I will not allow anyone to unlawfully deny him medically necessary care." But a separate restraining order gave the Los Angeles couple who hired her, Nausheen Gilkar and Omar Ahmed, physical custody and medical decision-making, barring West from possession of the child, whom they call Rumi. Their attorney, Lee Budner, denies they forced an abortion, calling the case "political theater." A hearing is set for August 25.

An Indiana mother has settled her malpractice lawsuit against Illinois abortionist Dr. Keith Reisinger-Kindle, who she says punctured her uterus and left half of her unborn child's remains inside her body during an abortion at about 22 weeks. The woman, identified in court filings as "Jane Doe," filed suit in March 2025 against Reisinger-Kindle and his Champaign-based Equity Clinic over the April 2023 procedure, seeking more than $50,000. A settlement was reached July 8th, with dismissal approved August 3rd. Doctors in Indianapolis found, according to the operative note, "half of a deceased pre-born human being in the right pelvis of the patient with evidence of severe and intentional trauma." Illinois regulators fined Reisinger-Kindle $5,000 and ordered 20 hours of continuing education. The clinic declined to comment.

A court in Vietnam's Dak Lak province has sentenced Montagnard Protestant pastor Y Nuen Ayun, age 59, to seven and a half years in prison for undermining "the national unity policy," along with four years of supervised probation after his release. The trial, reported by Christian Solidarity Worldwide and Church In Chains, lasted about two hours, with his wife and children present. Prosecutors alleged he led unregistered Protestant activities since 2003, helped found the Church of Christ Central Highlands in 2019, and collected roughly $294 for the group, in violation of Article 116 of Vietnam's Criminal Code. CSW President Mervyn Thomas said religious minorities are "mischaracterized as wanting to foster anti-Vietnamese and separatist sentiment, when in reality they are simply seeking the right to practice their religion of choice in peace," calling for the pastor's immediate release.

Kansas Democratic Senate nominee Adam Hamilton — the megachurch pastor of Resurrection Church in Leawood and author of more than 30 books — says conservative Evangelical voters are part of his coalition as he takes on Republican incumbent Senator Roger Marshall. Announcing his statewide "Leading From the Middle" tour Monday, Hamilton said the effort is about "trying to bring people together, left and right, Republicans and Democrats, to work to solve really big problems." He said he's "already hearing from many" Evangelicals saying, "we're supporting you," adding that his message centers on "loving your neighbor as you love yourself" and Micah 6:8's call to "do justice and love kindness." A theologically progressive Oral Roberts graduate, Hamilton is running as a pro-choice, anti-tariff Democrat "dedicated to leading from the center."
