I hear a lot of accusations of lying in our world today—got a minute? There are certainly lies told and liars around us; there always have been since the “father of it,” the devil, introduced such into the world (Jn. 8:44). A lie is that which is told with intent to deceive. To mistakenly say something—to misspeak—is not a lie, but to speak that which is false and knowing that we are doing that—that is very serious.

The instruction is clear: we are not to bear false witness against our neighbor (Exo. 20:16), nor accuse another falsely (Lk. 3:14), or teach that which is false (I Tim. 6:20). Sir Walter Scott penned: “O what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive.” One should be careful in accusation, as in all speech. The Bible says God will place “all liars… in hell” (Rev. 21:8).

Rather than trying to get around the truth, Solomon said, “Buy the truth, and sell it not” (Pro. 23:23). Truth is God’s Word (Jn. 17:17). That’s what Jesus said—that’s the Gospel!
