And here’s today’s news from Rail Technology Magazine in association with TransCity Rail – on the 14th May 2024.

HS2 has completed the 3,130 tonne second Wendover Dean Viaduct deck slide. Engineers slid the structure 270 metres over a 20 hour period last week, high above Buckinghamshire’s Misbourne Valley.
The Wendover Dean Viaduct is the first major railway bridge in the UK to be constructed with a ‘double composite’ structure, which uses less carbon-intensive concrete and steel than a more traditional design. The approach will cut the carbon footprint of the structure by around half.

VolkerRail is set to begin rail replacement works on Sheffield’s Supertram network.
The South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) appointed VolkerRail to renew areas of track, extend the lifespan the network, improve comfort and reduce noise in areas where tracks are worn.
Almost 2000 metres of track will be replaced across three phases over the summer. The first phase begins on Friday 24th May and will see new track crossing units installed at Cathedral tram stop.

The Railway Industry Association (RIA) has appointed Noel Travers as its new chairman following a competitive interview process.
Noel will begin his role on 3rd June, replacing David Tonkin, who is standing down after seven years in the post.
Noel is the MD of international railway solutions and services firm, and RIA member, XRail. He joined the rail industry as a British Rail-sponsored Engineering Management Trainee in 1988, and has held engineering and management posts in Chiltern Railways and Intercity West Coast.
He also served on the RIA Board from 2018 to 2021.
