It is 20 hours past midnight on another soaked & grey Friday, and it’s time to head to Rotterdam to talk to a great up-and-coming quartet for our Friday feature tonight, marked in Dutch as November 12, 2021. This is Danno, kinda feeling this weather, kinda not keeping the red light aflame from studio 2, GFN HQ in downtown Gwangju, how do you do?
So, who doth join us tonight, you might be asking, well, they are a fantastic beats & soul quartet out of the aforementioned Rotterdam, which for those of you in the geographically challenged category is one of the larger cities of The Netherlands. Their debut LP Gears of the Giant Machine dropped last month, and it’s a very solid debut which we’ll get a big taste of tonight in both hours. Of course, before Anton & Danique join us on the phone for hour 2, we’re gonna warm up with our own joints to reflect their own selections. However, prior to any and all of that getting going, it’s time to go with our TIGHT (or) feature for this evening, as we say congratulations to the one & only Bastard Jazz label celebrating their 20th anniversary with a new compilation album, and we’ll bump the opening salvo from that, which is just out, then talk more side opposite the jam. THIS is The Drop.
________
Bad Colours – Evers’ Jam
The Drop has commenced our first Friday feature of November, and we welcome you to the gig tonight. How’s it going this evening, Drop Demons? (Korean) This is Danno based here in studio 2, GFN HQ ready to welcome our guest artist selectors for this week in Anton & Danique, two members of the Dragonfruit collective based in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, and they’ve got a playlist of favorites and inspirations to their sound lined up for hour 2 this evening after we hit the top of the clock again. The group’s debut LP Gears of the Giant Machine is out now, so do what you gotta do to support if you dig the sounds herein.
Of course, as per usual, we started with our TIGHT (or) feature to keep the focus on the past in the present, that was the opening tune off the new Bastard Jazz 20th anniversary compilation by Bad Colours, that cut was called Evers’ Jam.
For those unfamiliar, Bastard Jazz is a label based out of Brooklyn started as you might have guessed in 2001. The label has steadily built a global following of passionate devotees through a consistent marathon of vinyl releases, boundary-bending compilations and albums that have become collector’s items among music tastemakers from all corners of the dancefloor. With a borderless roster of artists from New York to New Zealand, coupled with an ever-lasting commitment to pressing wax, the imprint has come to be known as “your favorite DJ’s favorite label”, boasting such talent as Lord Echo, Illa J, Captain Planet, Potatohead People, Colm K, The Elder Statesman, Brit Manor, Kid Loco and many more. Dynamic projects such as the label’s ‘Tempo Dreams’ series have proven to be a stepping stone for emerging talent thanks to partner curators such as Tall Black Guy, Teeko & B.Bravo and Soul Clap.
And yeah, just to keep it 100, that’s straight from the label’s website, because we let the artists say it themselves on this program, ya dig?
Congrats to everyone that has made this label happen, may there be many more anniversaries to come.
#9870, @gfnthedrop, podcast…
Now let’s begin the warm-up for our guest artist selectors tonight in Dragonfruit. We have a trio of tunes up next starting with Taylor McFerrin & followed by Mo Kolours & the Owiny Sigoma Band, all of which we’ll talk but nary a bad word about side opposite the sonics. THIS is The Drop on your Friday night with Dragonfruit.
________________
The Drop returns as we head towards the 2nd stanza of our nightly radio orchestra, what’s up Drop Gangsters (Korean)? This is Danno making sure to set the stage for our guest artist selectors tonight Dragonfruit. In case you’re just joining us they’re a quartet out of Rotterdam, and their new album Gears of the Giant Machine really turned our heads upon release last month, and we’ll get a few sips of that during the course of tonight’s show in both hours. To the recap, we just began smoothing the tarmac for our guests with…
Taylor McFerrin – Place In My Heart (…the eldest son of composer & vocalist Bobby McFerrin right here. Great DJ, producer, multi-instrumentalist, & singer-songwriter based in Brooklyn. This tune appeared on his 2014 LP Early Riser, and we’ll hear some of his remixing skills on the hour 2 playlist tonight.)
Mo Kolours – Biddies (…this is the project of half-British & half-Mauritian artist Joseph Deenmamode. This tune appeared on his professional debut from 2011 called EP 1: Drum Talking, and for a bit of an English point, biddies is slang for old ladies, or as it’s usually put old biddies. Not derogatory, more like a cute appellage for aged woman & grannies.)
Owiny Sigoma Band – Margaret Okudo (dub) (…this is a band out of London that appears courtesy of Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Recordings. The tune here appeared on their self-titled debut, also from 2011.)
Now moving towards the close of part 1 tonight, we just took a trip to New Orleans on Wednesday, and played some later disco vibes from drummer Idris Muhammad, but tonight we’ll showcase his debut LP Black Rhythm Revolution which is much more jazzy & frenetic, and we’ll let everything breathe while we sit By The Red Sea. THIS is The Drop your Gears of the Giant Machine Friday night with Dragonfruit.
Idris Muhammad – By The Red Sea

II
The Drop returns here in the 2nd quarter of our Friday night game of audio mirrors. This was Danno making it all happen radiologically, warming up for our guest artist selectors tonight out of The Netherlands representing Rotterdam. Dragonfruit just dropped their silky & absolutely bumpin debut LP Gears of the Giant Machine, so do check or stream, do what you gotta do. Their vocalist & beatmaker in Danique & Anton will join us via phone in hour 2 while rocking some of their favorites & inspirations to their rnb-soaked sounds. For now though we just got the ball rolling in part 2, that was….
Franc Moody – Flesh & Blood ( … group out of London is typically listed as a duo when you look them up, but they’re much more than that, with a flexing, rolling collective cast that can balloon up to 10 members depending on what they’re working on. This tune appeared on their 2020 LP, Dream in Colour.)
Thundercat feat Ace Hashimoto – VAPORWAVES ( …interesting one off single here, which dropped kind of secretly right after Thundercat won his Grammy. Ace Hashimoto is a young up-and-coming artist also out of LA who does the vox on this nice bit of biz.)
Now before we continue just a quick reminder to follow us on social media if you so dare, we are @gfnthedrop on most major social media platforms. If you’re local aka here in Korea, send us a message #9870 (50/100). What doesn’t cost you anything is catching us after the show, The Drop with Danno or The Drop on GFN (or) is available on most major podcast platforms, and you can find us with a simple google search & subscribe free & easy.
Moving ahead, we’ll continue warming up for Dragonfruit as we inch towards their hour 2 selection this evening. Up next we have sir Was, Nightmares On Wax, and RUMTUM, the latter of which is our part 2 tribute to Bastard Jazz’s 20th, and THIS is The Drop on your Friday night bumpin in Rotterdam.
____________
The Drop continues as we head towards our 2nd half tonight. Danno here, doing the usual unusual at least when it comes to what can be found on the airwaves here in Korea, and we are currently getting ready for Anton & Danique, two of the four members of Dragonfruit, whose debut Gears of the Giant Machine LP is out everywhere, and we’re about to get our first couple of wee tastes of that fine bidness shortly. To the recap….
Sir Was – The Sun Will Shine (…or at least so we hope here in mid-November, which I’m sure those in the Dutch & Northern European realms can also identify with this time of year. This is the project of Joel Wastburg out of Sweden, and appeared on his 2019 LP Holding On To A Dream.)
Nightmares On Wax feat Jordan Rakei – Typical (…a young Jordan Rakei providing the vox on this tune, just making his way here and definitely turning heads in the process back in 2018. This tune appeared on NOW’s Shape The Future. Can’t recommend either artist enough.)
RUMTUM – Tropic Air (…our second tip of the cap to Bastard Jazz Recordings, this one a tune that appears towards the latter end of their 20th anniversary compilation, available everywhere digitally now & in physical form next month just in time for the holidaze. Congrats once again to all the people & artists making this happen.)
So, let’s get our first taste of Gears of the Giant Machine by guest artist selectors Dragonfruit tonight, shall we? Up next is one of the lead singles to the LP called Exhale, and then we’ll finish the first half with a cut called Wasted. THIS is The Drop on your Dragonfruit Friday night.
