Hero Files

No, you were not secretly born to save the world.
and no, a prophecy is probably not coming.

In this episode of the How to Own Your Story, we talk about something slightly different and probably a whole lot more boring: finding a more realistic goal that's not saving humanity from the powers of evil.
IN this episode, you find your purpose for the FUTURE!

What is Hero Files?

Hero Files is a kids podcast where sisters Curie & Yeva explore fictional characters and ask one big question: what really makes a hero?
Through stories, discussion, and imagination, each episode turns reading into thoughtful conversation.

Hello everyone.

Today we will be learning the
six steps to, well, not the

six steps to own your Story.

The first step to own your story, which
is finding your purpose and your goal.

In almost every book, the
main character has a purpose.

Katniss protects your sister,
sister, Harry fights Voldemort.

Anne Shirley wants to belong.

The purpose keeps you motivated
to keep going and fighting,

but what are you about you?

What are you moving towards?

You don't need to save the
world to have a purpose.

Purpose can be small.

Purpose can grow, but
without it you drift.

Have any one of you ever
heard of Percy Jackson?

What was the purpose of his story?

To save the world from like being.

Destroyed.

Yeah.

Um, have you guys heard
of Hermione Granger?

What was one of her goals?

She, um, wanted to get a
good grade on all her tests.

Yeah, she did.

A student, and if you wAnnea begin
your story, you're going to have

a purpose to start it, because if
you don't have anything to start,

your story doesn't start itself.

Um, so like a short story,
well, not really a short story.

An example from a story,
Anne of Green Gables.

It's a really good book and I, I
recommend you guys to go read it.

It's one of my favorite books.

When Anne first arrives at Green Gables,
she doesn't have a Grand Destiny.

She's a chosen, powerful or famous.

She's an orphan who was sent
there by mistake at the beginning.

And biggest wish was very simple.

She just wanted to belong,
wanted somewhere that the

people there would accept her.

That's it.

But as she grows, something changes.

And.

Yeah, she wanted to stay and she wanted
to become someone not just to belong.

Yeah, she does.

She discovers that she very loves
learning words and beauty, and she

wants to prove that she's capable.

Uh, there's a powerful moment
when she decides that she'll like

academically compete in like.

Uh, there was this comp, no, there
was a school named Queens and

you had to take a test to get in,
and she got in and she was happy.

And in the, in the Queens there
was an Avery scholarship and she

also wanted to get that one so
she could go to Redman College.

And she did get it, but because
of some other events, it forced

her to not be able to go.

But I mean, she still tried very
hard and succeeded and involved.

Yeah, she did.

Um, later on when she becomes a
teacher, her purpose grows again

and it's to, uh, teach others what
she longed for and what she got.

Encouragement and care.

Um.

So Anne, the like lesson is
technically that Anne didn't

start off with the heroic mission.

She started with a very, very
small purpose and it slowly

turned into a bigger one.

So what are some small purposes
that you have that changed

into bigger ones over time?

Like

before we went to another school?

Um, I used to want to wake up early, but
then I kept on sleeping over my alarm.

Since we went to this new school and
it's earlier, I set my alarm like,

I don't know how, but I just like.

I woke up.

Yeah.

So like, basically, I don't know
why, um, when you know that you have

something important and you really,
really want to get it done, your brain

reminds you and then you wake up.

At least I, psychology.

I think that's true.

I think.

I think.

Okay.

Um, so some questions is, what did Anne
want at the beginning of the story?

She wanted to fit in, but then at the end
of the story, sh uh, and, but, well, I

mean, but then her goals started changing.

Then she wanted to like, compete
academically and then at the end

she wanted to teach others and
like, yeah, teach others how,

what, like what she got, um.

When you set yourself a goal, there's
technically two possible outcomes.

The first one is that
you succeed in your goal.

The second one is that you don't, but
you learn something and so the next

time you can succeed in the goal too.

And one thing is like that.

If you want to set yourself
a goal, you want to be like a

very, very, very, very like.

Put yourself into it so that it
can grow into something better and

something that you can use in real life.

Um, and yeah, my goals right now are, um,
I, I have a dance competition coming up

and I just really hope I do well on it.

And the second goal is a smaller one.

It's to finish the series.

I'm currently on Darkest Minds
and it's really good too, so I

recommend you guys to go read it.

Well, I mean.

Was there any examples like of goals
that started small and then go big?

Other than Anne of Green Gables?

Didn't you say one?

The one about the school.

Well, I mean, it didn't
grow very, very big.

Okay.

Well, um, one time you did, it was like
when you wanted, you had this liking

for code, so it can start off as like
maybe a liking for something and then

maybe you, and then maybe you can.

Start like a business.

Yeah.

So like if, let's say you really,
really like to dance and then you

wAnnea be like, you like and you
want to teach others your passion.

So you decide to open up a dance school,
and that could be your like business.

So like your very, very small hobby
could turn into a bigger goal.

But if you guys don't like, have
any ideas in mind, you guys could

start of like really simple, like,
I don't know, acing your test.

If you guys like anything you like,
for example, reading one book, like

finishing a book just like my sister.

Yeah.

And if you have a test or
something, you could, like your

goal is to get at a hundred on
that test or something like that.

Um, I wish you guys good luck on your
quest to find your goal, and um, episode

two is about working hard in confidence,
like the last few episodes are supposed

to help you complete your goal.

And episode two is about
working hard and confident.

Already said that, and I
hope to see you guys there.

Bye bye.

Thank you.
