The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

Our new muses Monday comes after a Saturday to remember in Seoul, with Big Thief and Khruangbin in town the same night! The new music keeps rolling with our first hour dedicated to our favorites and then part 3 and 4 finish with the big pop just out and fresh Korean indie & on-the-rise K-pop respectively.

Show Notes

As broadcast November 14, 2022 with plenty of concert memories for the start of the work week.  For anyone that was up in Seoul this weekend to see either Big Thief's first concert in Korea or Khruangbin's performance the same night, you all saw amazing shows.  Big Thief's performance at Rolling Hall was something else, with the glitches and hiccups along the way somehow making it even better.  Of course, it's Monday and that means all new music on this show aside from the upcoming shows, and we had a lot of great stuff drop last Friday with Sharon Van Etten, Chiiild, Jordana, and SAULT providing the big fireworks in hour one along with a highlight of PREP's show this Friday up in Seoul.  Part 3 we were Poppin' Off as usual, and big new joints and albums from Wizkid, Rihanna, Stormzy, and The Boss added the big spotlights.  For part 4 and our Fresh K Cuts, there wasn't a lot of info on many of the artists, but great new tunes to check out and a couple albums to spotlight as well.

It is 20 hours past midnight after a killer weekend of live shows in Korea’s capital, and we are ready in Gwangju with all the new tunes once again to help you shake it off after the laborious stuff today, scribbled into the sky as November 14, 2022. Danno here never at the ready to do the usual unusual, coming at you but not really for you from GFN HQ studio 2 in downtown Gwangju, how do you do? So, lots of big new tunes to go over from our Friday drop with Jordana, Sharon Van Etten, Christian Leave and many more to accompany us for the first hour, and of course all new pop begins the 2nd with big artists out there as well like Rihanna, Stormzy, and Wizkid blessing the world with new joints, but for now we mark a Saturday in Seoul to remember or in my case, not totally as we had both Big Thief and Khruangbin in town for amazing shows, the former of which I was blessed to get a ticket to, and we’ll talk about all of this after Adrienne Lenker & co do their thing in the air. This is The Drop.
Big Thief – Not
Back at it for this week’s offerings from The Drop, and our New Muses Monday has just kicked off with a bit of history from over the weekend although a tune we were surprised by at Big Thief’s debut concert in Korea at Rolling Hall on Saturday night, which also saw Khruangbin in town the same night, MUCH to my own regret I would have loved to have been truly broke this week and have seen both, but alas.
Both shows were killer, and seeing Big Thief in a room of about 300+ people I would guess is one of the last times anywhere that’s going to happen for a while as Adrienne Lenker and company are really starting to hit stride commercially as evidenced by the Korean fans singing every word around me. While anyone who’s a fan will generally describe the band as very folk-oriented, I and a lot of fans seeing them live for the first time were genuinely taken aback at how much they thrashed and bumped live.
There was a brilliant moment in the show that at first didn’t seem good at all when Lenker forgot some of the lyrics to Not and had to stop to consult with the band, but in some ways them finishing the song afterwards made it even better and man did they do it with emphatic, mind-bending energy. An almost whisper soft acapella rendition of Paul started the encore, and it was just a sensational show. Humanistic, deep, vulnerable, violent at times, a tour de force through a brilliant catalogue for 95 minutes. What a debut show in Seoul for Big Thief! Congrats to all involved and thanking my lucky stars I got to bear witness.

So, with the living history and our own shameless self promo out of the way, let’s unwrap the cellophane on the fresh cuts for this week, starting with flowerovlove, then moving into something from Jordana and Nana Lourdes, all of which we’ll talk up after the sound splosions. THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday.
______
The Drop returns and our final airbreak of the first quarter is on for this week’s New Muses first half, and of course we are Poppin Off in part 3 with the Korean indie and bubbling under K-pop to finish the gig as we do. To the rundown of that first triangle, that was…
flowerovlove – Out For The Weekend (…the 2nd EP in as many years from this London-based artist just dropped over the weekend, with the latest being a pop-punk focused record called A Mosh Pit In The Clouds. This is a surprising listen front-to-back we’d definitely recommend it if you dug that.)
Jordana – You’re in the Way (…the latest album from Jordana Nye is out as of Friday, and the artist honestly just keeps getting better and better. The album is called I’m Doing Fine, Thanks for Asking, and is out everywhere right now.)
Nana Lourdes – Thinking About You (…another album definitely making waves this weekend is the record this tune appeared on called Wyoming. A highly wistful record, Lourdes is from Portugal and sees America’s least populous state as kind of a blank canvas for all kinds of thoughts and emotions. Do check in full if you liked that joint.)
Alright, so let’s get into our final serving of fresh cuts for the first fourth tonight, and up next we highlight SAULT, who dropped FIVE, yes FIVE albums over Halloween weekend, but if you don’t have it already it’s gone, as they were made for free download for five days and then poof! They’re gone. We’ll rock this tune called Lion to begin the end, and then we have new stuff from Chiiild (three e’s) titled Bon Voyage, which is the multi-genre heat machine from Montreal who released the highly acclaimed Hope For Sale last year and this is more of the stuff that makes you sweat easy and that’ll finish the first quarter of the game tonight. THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday night.
SAULT – Lion
Chiiild – Bon Voyage

II
Back on The Drop and we are slow cookin and giving the sauce the part 2 sautee as we cold open the 2nd part of the show for this week’s New Muses Monday. Danno here this is what I do, and we are Poppin’ Off in part 3 with our Fresh K Cuts to come in part 4 of the gig this evening later on as we close the audio door. For now though, that was...
Ging – We’re Here, My Dear (…this is a producer who’s worked with some major heavy hitters over the years with Frank Ocean, Drake, The Weeknd, and BADBADNOTGOOD. This weekend saw this tune, the title track to the artist’s debut album so go check the rest if you enjoyed.)
Sharon Van Etten – When I Die (…Friday saw the deluxe edition of Van Etten’s latest record we’ve been going about this all wrong drop via Jagjaguwar. This would be one of the new compositions featured on the record, so go check available everywhere now.)
Pod, socials, etc…
Alright, so let’s get in another triumvirate of tunes before we start talkin’ more shows comin into Korea at the end of the first half. Up ahead and in order listed we have Christian Leave, Runner, and Hyd to continue the cool down, all of which we’ll verbalize after they exercise. THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday evening.
____
Continuing along as the clock continues to taunt and beat us with the incessant ticking, and it is our New Muses Monday for this week. Danno here, how’s it going, and we just rocked our final trio of new tunes for the first hour, so let’s get to the goods on the good…
Christian Leave – Superstar (…another soother of an EP that dropped over the weekend, this song being the title track. Christian Leave on the record explores the imbalances of power and the voyage in finding your people in life.)
Runner – Bike Again (…this one actually dropped last Tuesday, the 2nd single from the upcoming Like Dying Stars, We’re Reaching Out LP which the LA-based singer-songwriter will drop on Feb 17 next year via Run for Cover.)
Hyd – Only Living For You (…our final new album of the weekend is from this artist, true name Hayden Dunham. The album is titled Clearing, and is the debut album from Hyd, which was many years in the making and highly anticipated. Do check if you dug that number, available everywhere now.)
So, that’s it for the new music here in the first half, and as we do it is time to look forward to more shows coming to our parts of the world, and big news this Friday as PREP is in Seoul, who I know are a big favorite here on our fair peninsula. We’ll close with their most recent and most popular tunes starting with As It Was, then taking us to the jump with a cut called Who’s Got You Singing Again, and that answer Friday night will be PREP, surely. That’ll do it for the first half tonight, but stay tuned we have our part 3 Poppin’ Off momentarily, then it’s into the Korean stuff to finish the show in part 4. THIS is The Drop and that is halftime.

Part III: New Pop

Wizkid feat Ayra Starr – 2 Sugar
- The new record from the Afrobeats starchild Wizkid is out as of Friday called More Love, Less Ego.
- This would be the fifth studio album from the Nigerian singer-songwriter and as stated previously, yes to everything on that title.
Rauw Alejandro – LEJOS DEL CIELO
- The king of modern reggaeton is also back with a new album called SATURNO or as it translates in complex fashion to English, Saturn.
- This would be the third record from the Puerto Rican new generation latin artist, and you should definitely head to space a bit more if you dug that.
Rihanna – Born Again
- This is the closing credits tune for the Black Panther sequel Wakanda Forever, which came out in theaters here last week on Wednesday.
- The soundtrack itself dropped November 4 prior to the theatrical premiere, and features other big time artists like Burna Boy and Stormzy, which brings us to our next tune…
Stormzy – Firebabe
- This is the latest single from the upcoming album from the London-based rapper. The record is called This Is What I Mean, out November 25, with this tune featuring the contributing vocals of Sampha as well.
Julia Michaels – Sorry Me Too
- The first new single in a while from the pop star just dropped last week, a defiant analysis of a break-up with the singer in the end moving on with head held high.
- This mainly is a preview of what’s to come in 2023 from Michaels, but what exactly that entails will have to wait for more details.
Mahalia – Bag of You
- A new standalone right here, just like the previous song, although not really a preview of what’s coming up or anything.
- For those unfamiliar, Mahalia is a British-Jamaican singer-songwriter, with the last LP being Love and Compromise from 2019.
Bruce Springsteen – Turn Back The Hands of Time
- Only The Strong Survive is a series of soul covers from The Boss, which just dropped Friday, and this cover was originally released by Tyrone Davis in 1970, and the title track to that album.

Part IV – New K Cuts

TONE – news from you
- Gonna be honest here, team…I got nothing here aside from the song and past titles, but nothing biographic due to the totally ambiguous moniker and lack of bio anywhere.
- This is the latest from the artist though, released alongside an instrumental version on Nov 6.
Yeoeun – Lonely Night
- This is the moniker of Jeong Ji-eun, who was a member of the K-pop girl group Melody Day, who made their debut in 2012.
- As a soloist, Yeoeun has been doing it alone since 2019, with this along with an instrumental 7” premiering also on Nov 6.

moim - Woo~
- This is off the album from this band, which is the Korean word for a group gathering for a specific purpose.
- The debut record is called EGG, if you’d like some more of that smoothness, released in mid-October.

deulrejang feat Sun the Lily – YEPPI
- Not a lot of bio on the main artists here, but true name Jang Deulle, this is an artist on Poclanos roster who we highly recommend as they have some good taste, but really nothing further to say on that bright number right there.

HAD feat Nieah – Goodbye
- And unfortunately the mystery continues, as this artist is also lacking much profile info online.
- What we do know is this tune was dropped as a standalone single on November 6, although a debut EP dropped last year called FAMILY if you’d like to hear more.
COLL!N feat Khakii – VrVr
- Another pair of mystery artists right here, with COLL!N on the beats and Khakii on the bars, but not much beyond that as both artists have only released standalones so far in their young careers.
- This tune dropped Nov 1.
Zitten – Now is
- This is a tune off a three song EP that dropped on November 1 which appropriately enough is called Autumn or Ga-eul.
- Jiteun for those unaware is a veteran band by now with the trio having made their debut in 2005, and we’ll close with them seasonally here in part 4.
