We all feel pressured, as if there isn't enough time to do everything, as if we're always behind, and never feel like we're doing enough.
Let's be honest: building a company from nothing is incredibly hard. It has been for me. I started my entrepreneurial journey at age 8. Yep, you read that right....8! Since then, I've started, run and sold multiple businesses with no partners and no funding. All my life I've had to build something from nothing, and that's what I've gotten really great at - tenacious, creative and extremely smart strategy coupled with hard work. Welcome to The Do What Is Necessary podcast—I’m your host, Andrew Moon.
Listen in as I share all the mistakes I’ve made and, more importantly, what I’ve learned from them, with no fluff, and no rose-colored glasses. The Do What Is Necessary Podcast is a show where we cut through the toxic hustle and grind mindset and dig into what it actually takes to start and grow a “calm business”. Calm is family first. Calm is more independence. Calm is sustainable practices for the long term. Calm is joyful. Running a calm company is a choice.
I’ll be giving unfiltered advice every week, 10 minutes per episode each. I want you to walk away from this podcast with the mindset and tools you need to be successful.
This podcast is for entrepreneurs, side hustlers, and busy professionals with a short attention span (like me)—you’ll get quick-hitting, actionable information in every single episode. If you give me your time, I promise it won't be wasted. Now let's get to work!
We all feel pressured as if there
isn't enough time to do everything.
As if we're always behind and we never
feel like we're really doing enough.
And as entrepreneurs, we
really get stuck in that.
The issue is known as time scarcity.
And it's one of our society's
most common pressures.
So, what are we to do with,
how do we deal with that?
What are our options?
Unfortunately, there really, isn't a
simple solution that fits everybody.
But there are a few things that
I've discovered that have helped
me be more effective with that idea
in that concept of time scarcity.
So let's, first of all, let's
take a look at the problem and
then move on to the solution.
The first thing is the problem of
time scarcity in and of itself.
Most of us feel some kind of time stress.
I'm not making the most of
my time or there's not enough
of it to get everything done.
It's slipping away, too fast.
I'm overwhelmed by it all.
The feeling is that
there's not enough time.
With a feeling of scarcity
about time, we stress that we,
we can't get everything done.
We feel behind.
But here's the first thing to realize.
There's always a fresh supply of time.
We all get the same amount of
time, no matter who we are.
And we all get a fresh batch
of 24 hours every single day.
No matter how terribly we
spent the previous 24 hours.
It's a fresh start over and over
a chance to try something new.
So here's the first thing to realize.
It doesn't matter how much you get done.
Doing more doesn't solve the
problem of not enough time.
And I've had like days where
I'm extremely productive.
Where I'll get 20 or 30 tasks done with
zero procrastination or distractions.
And I still feel like I
need to do more in that.
I wish I had done more
with the time I was given.
And here's the fourth thing to realize
these hours really are precious.
They are a gift.
We take them for granted and don't
appreciate them to the fullest.
We go through our days doing routine
things, not really paying attention.
And because of that, the hours
slip through our fingers and
we wonder where it all went.
And again, as entrepreneurs.
That is ever a real thing that
we tackle on a daily basis.
So with those things in mind,
I'm going to share three of
the things that I have tried.
And, and I've been fairly successful
with and how to make the most out of
the 24 hours a day that we're given.
Now, these work for me in your,
your mileage may vary on these.
But I hope that you'll at least try
some or all of them out for yourself.
The first one is to be intentional
at the start of every single day.
With a fresh 24 hours in front of us,
it's easy to get started in our usual way.
We pick up our phone and
start intaking information.
But to make the most of
this new batch of hours.
I've found that it's important
to take a few minutes or maybe
an hour at the start of each day.
To reflect on what it is I actually
want to do with those 24 hours.
And you might do this the night
before, whatever works for you.
I might not end up doing all of
the things exactly as I planned
because that's not how life goes.
But I'm much more likely
to spend the hours wisely.
If I set intentions at the
start of every single day.
I make a list of what I would
like to do for that day.
And here's the key thing.
That list shouldn't be 20 or 30 things.
That list really should
be three to five things.
And if you listened to my previous
podcast episode, I talk about that.
How to, it's not about doing more it's
about doing less and having less to do.
The second thing is I
don't shoot for doing more.
I do what matters.
As I said, even doing 30 things in a
day is not going to get rid of time.
Scarcity.
In fact, it actually makes that
stress of time scarcity even worse.
So having a list of 30
things to do each day.
And feeling of stress and
scarce scarcity is not how I
want to live every single day.
But what if you had a list
of three important things?
You've probably heard this advice
over and over again in several places.
But the question is, do you follow it?
And I heard it over and over again.
And, and again, I've tried to do list.
But when I focus on three important
things, Guess what happens?
You tend to choose very carefully.
And by the way, after you do those
three things, you can still do others.
You, you have permission.
But I wouldn't expect yourself
to do all those other things.
As you do each of the three
things on your list, do each thing
as if it were the only thing.
That mattered.
And that kind of leads us into.
My third way to make the
most of those 24 hours.
And it's about reflection.
Reflect on what you actually get
done every day with gratitude.
At the end of each day, take a few
minutes to reflect back on your day.
And think about what you're grateful for.
Again, such common advice.
I know.
But combined with the
other things on this list.
It's ridiculously powerful.
So I truly encourage you to try it.
Try one or all of those things.
So those are my three ways.
If you have others that work for you
wherever you happen to be watching this.
Or listening to this podcast.
Pop those in the comments or reach out
to me on social media and let me know.
Because I'm always game to
try other things that work for
others and to learn from others.
Together though we can all have a
way of, of living our lives that's
radically different than what most of us
typically experience every single day.
And as entrepreneurs we need every
advantage that we possibly can get.
For survival to keep in front of the
things that we're supposed to do.
And to live a life of intention.
