A father and daughter discuss life across their generations. Science, medicine, music, and whatever else they choose to discuss are on the table.
Aubrey
00:00
It would be preferable if you did not die.
Peter
00:32
Well welcome back to Generations. I am one of your co-hosts, Peter.
Aubrey
00:36
And I am your other co-host, Aubrey.
Peter
00:39
Aubrey, how are you? You said you'd been a little sick.
Aubrey
00:42
Yes, I was a little sick, but now I am feeling better, which is good. I've been okay this week, but last week was my spring break, so coming back to a full week of the kids being absolutely insane was a little rough.
Peter
00:57
I bet. I bet that's the case.
Aubrey
01:00
Like every kid, of course, you know, they went on vacation, they went and did fun activities, and they all came back on Monday with like injuries. Like, you know, band-aids everywhere, casts randomly. I was like asking one of the kids, Oh, what'd you do over spring break? And he goes, you know, got injured a lot. I was like, Oh, that's Nice. And he was like, I fell off my bike. I almost had to get stitches, but I didn't. And then I got a bunch of paper cuts. And then I was like, oh, okay.
Peter
01:33
So they're just, you know, living it up, I guess.
Aubrey
01:36
Truly. And then it was a little rainy this week, so we couldn't really take them outside when it was raining. So then they were extra like cooped up because they didn't go outside for their recess So they're extra crazy. Um so yeah, they were a little chaotic this week, but other than that I am hoping it's actually gonna warm up, but now it's like solidly in rainy season, so like I don't think I've really seen the sun since Monday. Oh it's a bummer. Which is rough, but you know April showers, I guess.
Peter
02:08
Yeah, that does make it a little rough. You know, here it's gonna be in the like high fifties to low sixties, bouncing around. At least that's what it says. And I hope that's the case because that should be pretty good.
Aubrey
02:21
So Yeah, yeah, that seems like yeah, that's that's nice weather. Today it was like we were gonna get up for the gym and it was like wind chills making it feel like twenty seven. I'm like it's April. Why are we below freezing in April?
Peter
02:34
I mean, we had some hail slash snow the other day.
Aubrey
02:38
Oh geez. I just touched it.
Peter
02:39
We had one day it was real cold and then it's warmed back up. It's nice today, but
Aubrey
02:44
Well, that's good. But anyway, how have you been? What how was your week back to work?
Peter
02:48
Um, you know, it wasn't terrible. It was it was good. You know, it's good to I've come to a very pleasant realization. And that is, I think things at work are in a good enough place now that I don't get that dread. that I used to get going back. Yeah. Like, you know, there was a part of it's like, uh, I don't know if I'm excited to go, but it was not like it was not, oh dear, I can't believe I have to go back. So
Aubrey
03:19
That's good. That's that's kind of key.
Peter
03:21
So so it was good. I also uh I've been pushing for some changes in some leadership things to happen at work. And I will just say that they have now happened. Things switched over as of April 1st. I think that will be good. I also realize that Here's what I'll say. I saw it was probably on either TikTok or something like that, but I saw somebody say the following, and it stuck with me. It said, no one will villainize you more than someone who knows you've pegged them for who they are and not who they pretend to be. And so I just decided, sort of jokingly, I said to my manager, I just said. I just decided I am I am entering my villain era.
Aubrey
04:13
Very good.
Peter
04:14
That this is my quote unquote villain origin story.
Aubrey
04:19
Villain arc starting now.
Peter
04:21
That's right. It's time for that part of my life. But hence, you know, um that's that's why I'm doing the full beard now.
Aubrey
04:26
It was just part of the villain look. Right. Right. There you go. It works.
Peter
04:29
We'll see how long that lasts if I can keep it. But
Aubrey
04:33
Very nice.
Peter
04:34
But no, it was it was it was not bad. It was good. It was good to get back. It was good to see people and it was good to to work again. And so, yeah, going looking. I don't know. I I've got another medical student Monday morning, and he's a cool dude. He actually did four weeks with me back in the summer, and I guess he's coming back for another two, which part of me wants to be like, why Like you're gonna do family medicine, but maybe he just really enjoyed it. So I don't know. But at the same time, I'm like, what am I gonna teach you? Like I try and like I got I don't know We'll see. He's a cool dude, so maybe we'll just hang out and have fun while we do cases and see people.
Aubrey
05:15
Yeah, there you go. Yeah. See.
Peter
05:18
But we thought today we would talk a little bit about Project Hail Mary. Yes. We both watched it as I think we kind of have had talked about, but we'll go into it a little bit more. We're going to start off Kind of spoiler free, but there there will be spoilers. There'll be a big you know spoiler horn notice, that sort of thing. So People will know when the spoiler time starts. But first of all, Aubri, I know you were very excited for it. Tell us a little bit, what is your history with the property and what about it had you as excited for it as you were yeah so I actually read it read the book Project Helmary um
Aubrey
06:01
pretty recently and I was so shocked that I hadn't read it before 'cause I was like, this is right up my like right up my alley. Like how have I not I'd like heard of it before, but I never like read The Martian, um, or even watched The Martian. So I was like I don't I was like I don't really I'm not super familiar with the author and this his swag. I didn't know he had this swag, but he does. Um and so I read the book and Hayden had recommended it to me, and he was like, you might need to just like look past some of the, you know, assumptions that they make and like the fake science they bring up. Like you might just have to not not go so physicist on uh on it and just accept some of the things. Um so I was a little like, uh oh, are they gonna like try and do something like way out there and it's just gonna annoy me. Did not be it was not way out there. Did not annoy me. So I read it, I listened to it on Audible a few months ago. Absolutely loved it. Um I loved the audiobooks specifically because of the way that they voice um the characters and the way that they kind of interpret some of the key like just some of like the key audio things, you know, that occur in the story. Um and So when I finished it, I was like, oh, this is just such a joy. Like it was just such a fun read. It was so so fun to listen to. It had me hooked the whole time. And I was like, oh, this is gonna be such a cool such a cool movie 'cause I had finished it and then Hayden was like, I think they're coming out with a movie in like March of next year and I was like, What?
Peter
07:51
No way. Okay. Yeah.
Aubrey
07:53
Um so yeah, I kind of was as soon as I r like finished the story, I was like, oh, this is This is gonna be good. This is gonna be really good. Um but you read the book forever ago, didn't you?
Peter
08:06
Yeah, so I I and I bring this up, but I I I like to make the claim that I am an Andy Weir like hipster. So I had purchased the Martian on ebook on Kindle before it had been picked up by a publisher when Andy had self-published it on Kindle. So I I'd been familiar with him for a a long time. And so I'd read The Martian and I loved The Martian. I I like the movie. I think it's a good movie. It's a good interpretation. If you still haven't seen it, you should definitely watch it. I think you'll like it.
Aubrey
08:44
Yeah.
Peter
08:45
Then his second, his next book that came out was called Artemis. And Artemis was a bit of a letdown. Not that it wasn't still a good book. It's just the story was uh so it the main character is on a is on like it's it's like at a moon base and stuff. And It's just not I don't know, it doesn't feel as the stakes did never feel quite as high. It just didn't feel quite as impactful of a story. And so when Project Hail Mary came out, I waited a little bit to read it just till I kind of heard if this was more, you know, it w was was the Andywear Mojo back. And the general consensus was out of the gate that this was uh a huge step up from Artemis. So yeah, I read it years ago. I I don't remember what year the book came out, but I probably read about a year after it came out. Uh so I I read it a long time ago, really, really enjoyed it. And uh so I guess 2021 novel is when it came out. So yeah, I I read it a number of years ago. enjoyed it a lot and thought that they did a good job with the Martian. And even though this wasn't the same people, I knew that he was quite creatively involved in it. Okay, good. I was pretty confident that it was it was going to be good. And and yeah. So it was exciting to go and see it.
Aubrey
10:16
Yeah, yeah. I um Oh, I just lost what I was gonna say. Let me load. Hold on, I'm loading. I'm loading. Oh, um, when I saw that it was gonna be Ryan Gosling as the main character, um, I was a little worried because I was like, the main character is like a science nerd. I don't know. I haven't really seen any like m anything with Ryan Gosling in it where he isn't just kind of like Supposed to be like the attractive guy in the Which and maybe I'm just not very I'm not very well read or whatever. I haven't seen many Ryan Gosling projects where he wasn't just kind of the attractive guy. Um so I was like, is he gonna be able to like pull off the nerdy, nice guy that is, you know, Dr. Grace in Project Hail Mary. Um but when I watched the first trailer, I was like, okay, wait. This this could be good. This could be good. So I think personally, that he did really well in the movie itself.
Peter
11:24
Um I thought so too. I mean I I I agree with you in the yes He is kind of the pretty boy leading man sort of uh Sort of of that's kind of the roles he plays, but I think he's actually a very good actor.
Aubrey
11:46
Absolutely. Yeah. He gets across what he's supposed to get across, certainly. Like like in in every role that I have seen him play, like he he does very well. So yeah, I wasn't necessarily I wasn't worried about him like I don't know. I just the the Dr. Grace, Dr. Ryland Grace, um has a very specific, you know, he's like the sweet, nerdy, kinda silly guy and but also again very smart and nerdy. And so I just was was hoping he was gonna be able to pull that off and I think he definitely did. But um in terms of the book, did you listen to it or did you read it?
Peter
12:29
No, I read it.
Aubrey
12:30
Okay. Have you ever listened to it at all?
Peter
12:32
I haven't.
Aubrey
12:34
Okay, so when they do I don't think this counts as spoilers.
Peter
12:38
One of the characters' voices. We'll just voices.
Aubrey
12:42
Um in the audiobook. Because in the book it's supposed to be kind of like chords, you know, is the voice. They do that in the audiobook, um, and then like have the words over the chords. So you can like tell It just makes it seem really cool because you can like hear the character's real voice with the actual words on top of it. So you can understand what they're saying, obviously. Um, which I thought was a super cool way to do that, like as the characters are able to understand each other and they can actually kind of like have conversations. Um so that that was really really cool with the audiobook. I'm glad that I got to experience that. Um I was a little disappointed in the interpretation of the movie that they didn't have any of those like the musical sounding chords with that character's voice, but I was only like a little bit disappointed.
Peter
13:39
Yeah.
Aubrey
13:39
With that, because I still think that the way that they interpreted the character's voice is still pretty cool. The other thing that I was a little worried about is how they were going to do the flashbacks. Um, 'cause, you know, it's like the present day and then goes back a whole bunch of times to kind of you're figuring out how the character got to where they are, you know. Yeah. Um and so I I was kind of curious as how they were gonna do that, if they were gonna do it how they did in the book where it's like bits and pieces flashing back and forth kind of as he's like figuring out more things and remembering more key events that got him to be where he is, you know.
Peter
14:20
Right.
Aubrey
14:21
Um but I think they did really well. How do you how do you feel about all that?
Peter
14:26
Yeah, I think they did really well also. And you know, I was I was how would I put it? Uh once I knew who was directing the movie as well. I was fairly confident. So Lord and Miller, um, what is it? Is it Phil Lord, Chris Miller? Um They directed it and helped with some of the screenplay writing. And while they haven't directed a ton, they've done like the stuff they've directed is pretty good. So, you know, they directed the the original Lego movie. They directed Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. And it's so funny because it was like they did those and then they also did 21 Jump Street and 22 Jump Street. And I don't know. Have you seen those? No. They're hilarious, but they're like Okay, so on the one hand over here we've got like these kids' movies and then we've got these like completely inappropriate and raunchy but hilarious adult movies.
Aubrey
15:23
Yeah, that's funny.
Peter
15:25
Um but they also wrote uh they were screenwriters for uh Spider-Man into the Spider-Verse as well as across the Spider-Verse and their writing Beyond the Spider-Verse. Oh so I was like, okay, you know, they've got some they've done some good stuff. Um And then I just, yeah, I was I was excited for it because I wanted to see how they brought it to life. And I think they did a good job. It's an interesting book in in the movies the same way in that basically it starts with this main character who is coming to in the spaceship, out in the middle of flipping nowhere, and does not remember who he is or why or what. And so then it's this mystery of both what's happening in the present day, but piecing it together. And I thought that they did that fairly effectively in the movie.
Aubrey
16:17
So Yeah, they definitely moved Faster in the beginning than in the book, which which like makes sense. Like there was a lot of like it's a lot of like inner dialogue that you can't really translate into movie form, you know? That was in the book at the beginning. Um so I thought they did a good job with that, kind of like skipping You know, kind of just moving faster as he's like figuring out what's going on and where he is and what everything is doing.
Peter
16:51
The book goes a lot deeper into the science or even, you know, we could say pseudoscience, whatever, but But you know, into into him figuring things out both in the present as well as the figuring things out in the past. And They have to gloss over a lot of that, which is a good reason, I think, for people who enjoyed the movie to say, hey, read the book too, because you'll get a lot more detail and a lot more in depth. And I think for people like us That tickles a part of our brain that that really made me enjoy it. But um but let's just go ahead. Uh you know, look. I think we'd both say, good movie. If people are at all interested, go see it. You don't have to be a science person to go see it. Your mom liked it a lot. We went to lunch yesterday after I got home from clinic, and she was saying at lunch, she was like, I really like that movie. I want to see it again. And she's very much not a science type person. Right. And so I think it's a really good movie, and I hope that it does well. And I think it will. I think it has done well. And let's just say, starting now, full spoilers.
Aubrey
17:59
Okay, sounds good. Do the horn.
Peter
18:07
So I'll give a real quick short What is the movie about? So again, the main character, Dr. Grace, wakes up in a spaceship. There's two other people in that spaceship. They're both dead. He doesn't know who they were. He has to start figuring out who he is, who they were. And then we get these flashbacks. You know, where is he? He's years away from Earth. And we start to piece this whole thing together that something was happening, and they had seen this this astronomical phenomenon going from basically the sun to Venus. And they start figuring it out, and there's this thing they call the astrophage, and they really don't get into it much in the uh in the movie other than the astrophage is basically taking energy from the sun and it's dimming the sun gradually over time. And it's going to dim the sun to the point that Earth's going to basically enter a second ice age. And then they start realizing that this has happened to a bunch of other stars. And they find a star, if I'm remembering, and please correct me if I'm wrong, but They find a star where there's evidence that there's astrophage there, but the sun isn't dimming.
Aubrey
19:19
Yep.
Peter
19:20
So they put together a a team to go out and figure out what's going on. And we see in flashbacks that Dr. Grace, he wasn't, he was just kind of the unlikely person, you know, high junior high school mm science teacher because he'd published some paper about how water is not essential to life and that there can be life even in the absence of water and Yeah. You know, that got a lot of backlash, so he's just been teaching junior high science. Anyway, these some lady comes to him and she's like, Look, you think different. This is what I need. I need people who think different. And So he's been doing a lot of the science, figuring out what's the astrophage, both how can they use the astrophage for energy to propel themselves out there, but also like what are the conditions that this thing needs. And so they've got a pilot, they've got, you know, a science person and all this stuff, they're getting ready to go, and the science people blow up in uh in an accident. And so he is asked to go as the science person declines. And as we realize towards the very end of the movie, he is sent. Against his will. Like he he takes off running and they chase him down and they trank him and they totally put him on this thing and send him. So and and that is there are a few little differences in the book and in the movie, but I was glad that that was not something they changed in the movie. Yes, me too. I think it's a key part of the character and the character's growth. that he wrote not only did he not want to go, he refused. He did everything he could to not go. And the only reason he's up there is because he got tranked and drugged and sent. And and so he he was an absolute coward. And he straight up says that. He says, look, I yeah, he says, you're right. If I don't go and we can't stop this, then humanity might die out. But it'll be in thirty or forty years and I am too big a chicken. I'm kinda okay with that.
Aubrey
21:26
Yep
Peter
21:27
And so not not a very heroic turn. No. That's kind of what happened back on Earth leading up to it. And now he's however many, I don't remember, how many years is it? Is it like 13 years that he's been
Aubrey
21:38
I wanna say it was like, but for some reason I thought there were maybe it was 13 years of what it was gonna be if it was a round trip or something.
Peter
21:48
Anyway, he's it's been a it's been a a number of years since he's been out, and again, he is now the only surviving person. Uh the pilot and the other person have both died. He starts to remember who they are. And as he's approaching this star All of a sudden he sees something else. Blip A. Blip A shows up. And it's a great big spaceship that is not human in origin in any way. And it tries to communicate with him, please.
Aubrey
22:23
It's twelve twelve to fifteen years has passed on Earth, but four years for him because of time dilation.
Peter
22:29
Okay, there we go.
Aubrey
22:30
By the time he got there.
Peter
22:31
Thank you. Because I knew it was like, you know, four years or something to get back, but I thought I'd remembered in the movie there was like a 13-something years that it had been since a hearing. Earth, yeah. Yep. Um Anyway, the spaceship is like trying to communicate with him. He he gets little a little model of like him and sent to him in this little container and all this stuff and then kind of an umbilical gets built connecting his ship to this other ship and you know long story short he goes out there and on the other side of this he meets Wha what he who he calls Rocky. And Rocky is this sentient, you know, rock looking creature who's in the ship. And there's a lot in the book, not much in the movie, a lot in the book though about them figuring out how to communicate. how to interpret the language so that they can talk to each other and eventually they do and then they understand that they're kind of both there for the same thing. But Rocky While they have some technology that's more than what humans have, they haven't figured out stuff like radiation and this, that, the other. So the other what, 23 people, 23 crew members of Rocky Ship? all were killed by this the radiation of being in space because they're they weren't radiation shielded. And Rocky where he was kind of like the engineer sort of dude down where all the astrophage was that they were using for propulsion, that shielded him from from the radiation. So he's watched the other members of his crew die and it's just the two of them and they've got to figure out how to how to save their planets.
Aubrey
24:03
Yep.
Peter
24:04
And so, you know, hijinks ensue. There's some real tense moments in when they're trying to get that they find that there's a planet there that The astrophage are going to, but they're being actually destroyed by some microorganisms on the planet. So they've got to capture that and they've got to get that and synthesize it and send it back to to Earth and get Rocky to his planet and then things happen and you know basically um Grace realizes that the way they'd synthesized things, that the bacteria was leaking out of its containers and was eating away at the astrophage that they were using they were going to use as fuel. And that he's figured out this is happening on his ship. He doesn't know if Rocky's figured this out. He thinks probably not yet. And if he doesn't help him, neither of them are going to have enough fuel to get back. to their home. So he sends the probes back to because Rocky had given, that was the thing is Grace was supposed to, this was supposed to be a one-way trip for him. Yep. That was why he didn't want to go. He knew that the plan was he was gonna die out there and that he was gonna whatever he found, he was gonna send back in probes. Um, but Rocky says, hey, look, I'll give you enough of my fuel to get you back home. And so now that he's give Rocky's given up some of his fuel, Grace realizes he's not gonna make it home. So he launches his probes. And that's kind of and that's where I think they did a really good job as Grace is getting to this decision. That's where we're seeing the flashback of him being tranquilized. And, you know, we realize, no, he was a coward. He didn't do this willingly. And so he makes that decision and he decides, that's it. I I'm gonna save him. And he goes back and he saves Rocky. And you know, in the end, he ends up living on Rocky's planet. He he he can't get home, but he can go and he he lives there and Yeah. Still is a teacher and sends the probes back and the probes make it to Earth and they are able to start synthesizing the thing and counteract the astrophage and there we go.
Aubrey
26:20
Yep. Yeah, there was um at the very end when we get the little scene that kind of confirms that Strat, the lady who was in charge of all that um like receives the probes. That that was a nice little touch at the very end to be like, oh he did it, yay! Like she got the they got the probes and it was It was cool to see that it also you could see the effect of of the sun dimming 'cause everything is like ice. Like it zooms out and it's like, oh, oh no. It it was close. Like they were they were getting close. Um yeah, but I I when I first saw the trailer, I was like, how are they gonna do Rocky? Like, how are they gonna make him Look like, you know, but they they made him a puppet, didn't he? Yeah, yeah. Oh, and I loved that. Cause then he's just like he can actually interact with him and he's, you know, booping around and it's not just he d has to like interact with uh whatever like the thing with the dots on it that they so they can CGI it, you know what I mean?
Peter
27:34
Whatever, somebody in like a mocap suit, like Andy Circus style crawling around on the ground.
Aubrey
27:39
Right, exactly. Um, yeah, I thought the way that they showed the ship too was super cool. Rocky's ship, because it's supposed to be obviously like the whole thing is what, Xenonite, I think. Um and it's like all weird and sharp and he's like, Grace is like, why did they build it this way? Like this is so weird. But seeing that visual like i in the movie was so cool to just all the weird sharp edges and the way that like The light is getting all messed up and everything. Like, yeah, I thought all those visuals were super, super cool.
Peter
28:16
I agree. I really liked that. And, you know, they have to, they have to go to control to some contrivances because one of the whole big things is because now remind me, in the book. What is it about the atmosphere in Grace's ship that is toxic to Rocky?
Aubrey
28:38
Rocky needs it to be he needs ammonia. I think it's like an ammonia specific atmosphere and also way hotter than he gets one of those first little like trinkets that Rocky sends, he like smells it and he's like, oh that's ammonia. Oh no no So yeah his whole Rocky's whole atmosphere is just like ammonia filled. Yeah. Which is super, yeah. Super.
Peter
29:10
Like I say, but I think and that's what I like about Andy Weir is I think he's a good author for for folks like us who I think he's a good storyteller, but I really, really like that he does lean into the science part of it. Yep. And tries to make it again, he and he'd be the first to admit that he's he takes some liberties with it. the science. Right. Right. Which I'll be honest, I think most good science fiction authors do. Even people who are trying to write hard sci-fi. You're gonna write hard sci-fi, but you've gotta take some liberties with the science fiction. Because it's more important that you write a good book and tell a good story than it is that you be slavishly accurate to to scientific principles. Especially because we know there's a lot of stuff we still don't understand. So, and I think he does a decent job of walking that line of making it both believable. from a science standpoint, but also being willing to remember that, hey, you're not here to read a science textbook, you're here to read a good story. Right, exactly. He does that really well. And I thought that they did that. Again, well, both this and the Martian, I think they do a good job of that, remembering that you're here for a good movie that you're going to enjoy. Yep. And and I think that that, I mean, I don't know, but I can imagine that that is a difficult, a difficult kind of needle to thread. Uh to do that.
Aubrey
30:41
So Yeah. I did I also enjoyed the some of the more kind of just like cute f and funny moments that they added in the movie that weren't necessarily in the book. Um like the um what do you call it? The the room on Grace's spaceship that has like the like the visuals on all sides.
Peter
31:00
It's like it was like the therapy room or something like that. It it reminded me of like a primitive sort of hollow deck From Star Trek where you know he goes and he's got a room with a bunch of screens around him, so it's kind of like three sixty.
Aubrey
31:14
Yeah, so you can like sit on the beach kind of, but it like looks really bad. But When they're like celebrating 'cause they realize they can both save their stars and both go home and they have like a s like a little celebration.
Peter
31:27
They're like partying and fireworks going on.
Aubrey
31:30
Yeah. I thought some of those were were such cute.
Peter
31:36
And again, I think that a lot of this comes from the fact that it was a a practical that Rocky is a practical character. And and that you feel like it's very convincing the connection that Grace and Rocky have with each other. In a way that I think would have been more difficult to pull off if Rocky was just a complete CGI. Totally. character. And and that's the thing is a lot of the movie, you know, probably I don't know time wise, but I'd guess at least half, if not a little more than half, of the movie is either just Grace or Just Grace and Rocky.
Aubrey
32:16
Yep. Yep.
Peter
32:18
And you know, in a similar way again with the Martian where it's just Mark Watney on Mars for so much of it. It can be hard to tell a compelling story. And I think that they they do a good job where the interactions between the two of them But also seeing things like where Grace is making the videos explaining what's going on that are going to get sent back, um, kind of that monologuing. Um, and there's I mean there's a really funny scene in there where He's he's trying to get away from Rocky a little bit because Rocky is like ever present. And Rocky has exceedingly good hearing And so Grace is talking and Rocky's like keeps interrupting him. What do you and he Grace is like moving further and further around the corner and talking softer. doctor and great Rocky can still hear like just some really good moments like that that I thought made it uh I thought made it a lot of fun to watch.
Aubrey
33:10
Yeah, there were some really sweet like I was just giggling the whole time. Like they they added some more Yeah, they added a lot more like funny, funny and sweet moments in the movie Um than were in the book and I I thought that was a really good way to go about it because Rocky is a f like his personality is yeah very like logical and practical and that can end up being really funny when like The classic line is he's like, give me a fist bump, and Rocky's like, fist my bump, and he's like, No, no, no, not the same thing. And he's like, it is the same thing. And he's like, no No no no, not the save pig.
Peter
33:44
Nope. Nope, it is not.
Aubrey
33:48
Um yeah, those were those were really funny. But yeah, when they I was wondering how they were gonna do Rocky's voice, because in the book, yeah, they they do Like when Grace is hearing Rocky, it's just kind of like these chords. You it not really yeah, just like a bunch of chords, that's how they that's how his language is and so they kind of overlapped that where they did the chords and then the voice on top of it, which I thought was cool, but it was fun that in the movie they had Grace like pick a voice to like have as Rocky to like dictate the words in the on the c I thought that was funny because they like went through some of the voices to be like, nope, not that one, not that one. Yep. Uh that was a fun that was a fun addition, I thought. Um I also was wondering how they were gonna have um Strat, like who were they were gonna have as Strat and like how they would like if Strat was a very like in her her like demeanor in the book You know, she's she's no no nonsense. Get straight to the point. She's doing this because she's trying to save humanity and she will take absolutely no bullshit from anybody. And I thought the the actress also did fantastic with like the she kind of has no emotion on her face ever.
Peter
35:09
Oh yeah.
Aubrey
35:10
And she just says what needs to be said. And like at the beginning when they're putting him in like he's doing experiments with the astrophage for the first time and he's like, Are you am I expendable? Like are you doing this because I'm expendable? And she like she like looks around at all the world leaders, comes back down, she's like it would be preferable if you did not die. Right. Like that delivery was great. I I thought she did really, really good cause that like she's like the ma next main character besides Rocky in And Grace, of course. Um the the other thing I thought was fun that they added in the movie that wasn't in the book was Carl Isn't that his name? The one security guard guy that he like becomes friends with. And then they kind of added that friendship in the movie, which I thought was fun. I thought that was a fun addition.
Peter
36:03
I thought so too.
Aubrey
36:04
Because there wasn't really there wasn't really anything like that in the book and then them being like the scene of them going to the like hardware store and buying like One million what what did the what were they? Um like that was a fun a fun thing and he's like, Do you guys have a budget for this? And he was like like there's no budget. And they just start throwing it all the duct tape.
Peter
36:29
And I think that this I I think that it's a good example and and we've seen good and we've seen bad examples. But I think that that this is a really good example of people who understand that A movie and a book are different mediums. Yes. That they tell stories in different ways. And that it's okay to take some liberties with things in order to tell a better story in whatever medium you're working in. Right. And and so I didn't find myself bothered by any of the changes and and they were again they were fairly minor. They're they're really true to I think the key aspects of it, which is good. You know, we see it doesn't work well when things stray too far. But yeah, I thought it was, again, I just thought it was, I thought it was a lot of fun. It was a good movie. I enjoyed it a lot. And I look forward to being able to watch it again.
Aubrey
37:27
Yeah, me too. I definitely by the end I was like, yeah, I could I could watch that again uh probably a million times and it would just be so enjoyable each time. Um I the the like serious and like intense moments too, I thought they did really, really well. Um in the one scene where stuff is going really wrong and Grace gets like smashed against the side of the spaceship and Rocky like pulls him off and like basically saves saves his life. Um I was kind of glad that in the movie they didn't really show the part where r Grace almost kills Rocky by like trying to save him. Cause I don't remember if you remember that in the book. Exactly. He like tries to save him but ends up doing something that like literally I don't remember exactly what it was, but he did something that like actually almost killed Rocky and then it was like uh Rocky wakes up and he was like, Why did you do that? You almost killed me and Grace was like, Oh, my bad Um, but I thought they did that that scene really well. And just like their their like chemistry together and just being buds. Like that was just super, super fun. And like the super tender moments where Rocky is like, Oh, I can give I give astrophage to your ship, you go home. And Grace is like, What? You can I I can go home? He's like realizing he can actually go home and then He's crying and Rocky's just like why why big deal? I I give astrophage, you go home. Yep. Like you go home to Earth. Everyone's happy, you know Oh, it was just so it was just such a good movie. I'd saw a couple um Like I think I saw like a TikTok of just like a clip of the movie or something and one of the top comments was Project Hell Mary was so like thumbs down emoji, like six thumbs down emojis And I didn't get it for a second because I was like I was like, why are you hating on the movie? The movie was so good. And then I was like, oh, I'm an idiot The whole thing is that Rocky can't do a thumbs up, so he does a thumbs down instead of a thumbs up. So it's actually a thumbs up. And I was like, oh good, good. No one they're not hating on it. Never mind. Yep.
Peter
39:48
No, I thought it was I thought it was fun. It was a good movie and it's a good book. People should watch the movie. Read the book.
Aubrey
39:54
It's definitely worth reading. Yes, definitely. I agree.
Peter
39:58
