The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

We open with Blondie taking rap to the top, and let the new stuff take the rest. After a week off with COVID, Kat Bass makes her triumphant return on the true season premiere for The Popcast.

Show Notes

As broadcast March 28, 2022 with plenty of comeback for your potential podcast injury.  Tonight we mark the anniversary of the first hip-hop tune (or at least a tune featuring a rap) that went to #1 with Blondie's "Rapture."  However, the main event is that Kat Bass returning triumphantly after a week off with COVID.  Brilliant to have her back in the studio, and we had a great slate of new tunes and albums that just dropped, so enjoy because we certainly did!

It is 20 hours past midnight and into week two of season 7 we go, fair listener, which is greeted with huge sighs of relief from this guy on the mic right here who’s gotta steer the ship. Danno here hope you had a great weekend despite the rain and of course no matter the weather we’re happy to have you with us, tonight, etched permanently into the cosmos as March 28, 2022. Big props to all of you tonight and another sigh of relief as Kat Bass is once again in the house after battling off a case of covid and forced quarantine last week as a result. Obviously, very glad our Monday maven is all good, and lots of that to go through tonight with big tunes and albums just out, with highlights from Wallows, beabadoobee, Dehd, and so many more for both hours on this evening’s programming. For right now though, we go back to 1981 as rap’s first #1 hit the top of the heap on the Billboard charts courtesy of Blondie and the story of a car-eating alien, but we’ll listen before the talk continues. THIS is The Drop.
Blondie - Rapture
The Drop is officially on the air tonight with the history and such to begin the process this evening. Danno here, studio 2 GFN HQ in downtown Gwangju, welcome to the gig this evening as we kick off another stellar week on the show.
That was a trip back to this date in 1981 with Blondie and the band’s #1 hit Rapture. The song went to the top of the commercial tree on this date, and obviously Debbie Harry was not a rapper, but the band were huge fans of the nascent genre that hit quite a few milestones the year prior, with Kurtis Blow earning the first Gold record in the genre for "The Breaks" and The Sugarhill Gang bringing a rap song to the Top 40 for the first time with "Rapper's Delight." The first #1 though went to Blondie who, busts a rhyme about the man from Mars who comes to Earth with an insatiable appetite.
Of course, some interesting things happen to you well beyond death after the man from Mars shoots you dead and eats your head.
Many in the music industry at the time think of rap as a fad, which they are happy to ignore until it passes. But Blondie cannot be ignored - they're one of the biggest acts in the world, with trans-Atlantic #1 hits in "Heart Of Glass," "Call Me" and "The Tide Is High." "Rapture" is guaranteed airplay despite the rap, introducing many listeners to the genre. And you cannot deny that groove, which for me personally makes that tune.
#9870, @gfnthedrop, pod.
So moving along, we’ll switch into the now sounds just out this weekend. A rare quartet is on deck with beabadoobee leading the way followed by EFE, Stella and BEL, all of which we’ll discuss further after they do their thing. THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday.
______
Back on The Drop tonight kicking off the week right with our new music showcase for the full two hours. Kat Bass is back for her popcast 2nd hour tonight, and this is kind of a delayed season premiere with our pop maven unable to join us last week, that all starts in part 3 later on. As to what we just sent to the man from mars, that was a rare quick hitter quartet to begin the new music parade, starting with…
Beabadoobee – Talk (…big announcement from the Philipine UK-based star, as the artist’s latest album is out as of July 15 called beatopia. The band also hits the road starting in the UK later this year, which was announced concurrently with the new single and album, so big beabadoings.)
EFE – KIWI (…another upcoming record that just got announced came with this single, which is the Dublin-based artist’s first release of any kind in over a year. The Vitamin C EP is out later this year, and EFE will be opening for jpegmafia at their sold-out Dublin shows along with hitting a couple big festivals this summer.)
Stella feat Redinho – Charmed (…now, this name is spelled with a Greek sigma, just for those keeping score. The on-the-rise artist out of Athens is out with this new tune as of the weekend via subpop, and there is an unnamed album in the works for later this year so stay tuned.)
BEL feat girlhouse – PBR (…with everyone staying home by choice or otherwise this past couple of years, this is a song for all of you who’ve gone out for the first time in a while, feeling the excitement of hitting the town for the first time in a while…and being totally underwhelmed.)
Alright, so we have a couple more quick hitters to give a whirl before the first quarter’s out, and two biggies. Barrie is out with their latest album Barbara, which just dropped Friday, so we’ll rock Jersey to begin the end of our first fourth, and finally, we have the latest single from Chicago-based Dehd, and this tune is the 2nd single from their upcoming album Blue Skies which drops May 27. THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday night.
Barrie – Jersey
Dehd - Stars

II
Back at it on the mic front and continuing with our New Muses Monday, slow-cooking the 2nd quarter as we typically do. Danno here, studio 2 GFN HQ doing as I do, and Kat Bass brings her popcast in hour 2 shortly, but we got quite a few rivers to cross before that milieu. Let’s recap what we just did for the start of the 2nd staza there...
Son Lux feat Moses Sumney – Fence (…a couple of weeks ago we heard the first taste of this massive new soundtrack Son Lux has composed for the new A24 film Everything Everywhere All At Once, and now we have this 2nd installation. The OST in total is going to be 49 songs, so obviously a very ambitious project. Everything Everywhere All At Once comes out April 8.)
Lykke Li – No Hotel (…this tune dropped last Thursday and Friday saw the announcement of a new audiovisual album which is spelled EYEYE but pronounced eye. Should be a very interesting project to check out, and that drops May 20.)
Pod, socials, etc…
So, we got a pair of tunes in the next block starting with Aldous Harding’s latest called Tick Tock, and we must point out that’s as in the clock, not the social media platform. We’ll follow that up with Laura Elliott and talk about both after the audio haze clears out. THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday night.
____
Back on The Drop here on our New Muses Monday as we await the return of Kat Bass and her popcast, but we still got a little bit of music to discuss right now and play, so let’s get to it…
Aldous Harding – Tick Tock (…the new album from one of our favorites from NZ is out as of Friday. Warm Chris is getting a lot of love from the places that know and are paying attention to the stellar tunes she’s been making during her career, but I feel like her albums always kind of miss the real hype machines. However, this is a good LP, do check in full.)
Laura Elliott – God Complex (…this is a very strong bit of indie pop, and for those unfamiliar or didn’t catch it, this song is about staying in a toxic relationship simply for fear of being alone. This tune is one of the lead singles to Elliiott’s upcoming debut album People Pleaser, which drops April 6, so next Wednesday.)
Alright so the halftime buzzer approaches, but we got a couple long players to let breathe out. First up is the latest from Kurt Vile called Mount Airy Hill (Way Gone), which is the latest from his upcoming album called Watch My Moves, due out April 15. After that we got Charlie Burg’s latest called 97 Avalon, which is a standalone and the artist’s first release in over 2 years. That’s gonna do it for now, and THIS is The Drop at haltime.
Kurt Vile – Mount Airy Hill (Way Gone)
Charlie Burg – 97 Avalon

Part III

Hot-Take

Harry Styles - Carolina
Saddened by the sight of a young homeless man spotted near his home in London back in 2019, Styles, 28, offered food and money for a hotel room. Since then he has been stalked and had his home broken into by the individual he tried to help. He had assaulted a female member of staff and smashed a plant pot, causing a ruckus.

HEIZE - Why
Environmental Protection Agency recently allowed the experimental release of over 2.4 million genetically-modified mosquitoes in California and Florida. It's a project intended to prove that other mosquito populations can be repressed with these new ones. The modified mosquitoes are non-biting males carrying a gene that, after mating, kills the insects' offspring.

Fresh Buns

FINNEAS - Naked
03.25.2022
Finneas is back with his first new song of 2022, the punchy yet confessional, “Naked.” “Naked” is a tale of finally moving past heartbreak into happiness, coping with your feelings. A quite groovy yet honest song.

The Wallows - Guitar Romantic Search Adventure
03.25.2022
This song is the tenth and final track on the sophomore album "Tell Me That It’s Over". Fun Fact, apparently the song title is inspired by the album "Guitar Romantic" by the Exploding Hearts.

Cannons - Hurricane
03.25.2022
Alternative/electro-pop band CANNONS have released their vibrant new album "Fever Dream". The album is heavily inspired by 1970s sound. Hurricane, being the 2nd track of said album, is no different. It's a definite banger.

Keshi - HELL/HEAVEN
03.25.2022
HELL/HEAVEN in particular is about like a blessing with all the success and with popularity growing and everything for the young artist. In an interview, he claims that this is the best project he’s ever made before.

Summer Walker, Cardi B, & SZA - No Love

Part IV

Fujii Kaze - Festival
03.23.2022
Fujii Kaze is the newest rising star in J-pop. He has now released his second album, "LOVE ALL SERVE ALL" on the 23 which contains the track you will hear soon. His first debut album reached billboard top 50 in Japan and I believe this new one won't be too different.

brb. - on & on
03.25.2022
brb. is a Singaporean R&B trio consisting of Clarence Liew. Auzaie Zie and Marc Lian. The group came about because of their mutual love for R&B, hip-hop and soul.

mxmtoon - sad disco
03.24.2022
Sad disco is the second single from mxmtoon’s upcoming sophomore album, ‘rising.’ Mxmtoon shares how she felt she has grown up since her hit song prom dress and wanted to write a song that resonated with who she is now.

Sabrina Claudio - Better Version
03.24.2022
This song stems from the perspective of someone who’s in a relationship with someone who is internally toxic. They choose to remain in this relationship because of those once in a blue moon glimpses of who their partner has the potential to be.
