The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

A trip to 35 years ago when Tommy James and The Shondells were top of the pops once again, and a bunch of wild new muses to let dance around for the full two hours, finishing with some Fresh K Cuts to spotlight what's going on here below the surface.

Show Notes

As broadcast November 21, 2022 with plenty of Shondells magic and mania in tow!  Tonight we mark this date in 1987 when Billy Idol bumped Tiffany off the top of the proverbial tree at #1, which is one of those things that just goes on & on.  What is remarkable is that both artists had #1 hits with covers of previous hits by Tommy James & The Shondells (who you cannot escape & live forever).  Great new tunes to cover in the first hour with a stellar album from Weyes Blood out Friday called And In The Darkness, Hearts Aglow, then we had lots of new singles and album announcements from Tennis, Andy Shauf, Cigs After Sex, and that also goes on & on.  To finish the first hour, we highlighted FKJ's upcoming performance in Seoul at KBS Music Hall, which all goes down Monday Nov 28.  Part 3 as per usual we are once again Poppin Off, with a highlight on the World Cup anthem collab between Nicki Minaj & MALUMA to start, then we had big new joints from Chance The Rapper, JP Saxe, and Dermot Kennedy to highlight as well.  Part 4 of course we're taste testing our Fresh K Cuts, or new indie & bubbling under K-pop from right here on the peninsula, with SURL, Gwak Tae Poong, and ilbum being highlights there to wrap it up tight.

It is 20 hours past midnight as winter’s bite starts nibbling here in our fair City of Light, and as always we are ready to get the new stuff rolled out tonight to start your week right, and this miniscule verse in the poem of spacetime is notated in the margins as November 21, 2022. Danno here doing what I do, coming at you but not really for you from GFN HQ studio 2 in downtown Gwangju, how do you do? As the year really starts wrapping up we have plenty to do in this first hour, with new muses from Tennis, Phoebe Bridgers, Weyes Blood, and Honey Dijon to go bump in the night, and that’s only the first hour. Part 3 we pay tribute to the just kicked off World Cup to begin things, then new joints from Dermot Kennedy, Cautious Clay, and Chance The Rapper to give a whirl. Of course, we never neglect our new & recent Korean indie darlings to close the show as well, so stay tuned there is, as always, a lot going on. To start though, we note some interesting history on this date 35 years ago on the charts in 1987, as Tommy James & His Shondells are everywhere, but we’ll talk about this after we escape and return from the make out sesh. This is The Drop.
Tiffany – I Think We’re Alone Now
Back at it for this week’s offerings from The Drop, and our New Muses Monday has just run away for our TIGHT (or) feature to start the show. That was Tiffany with what is unquestionably her biggest hit from 1987 in I Think We’re Alone Now.
An interesting bit of history to note as it was on this date that Billy Idol’s Mony Mony hit the top of the charts after Tiffany’s tune was atop the charts for an extended period. Now, there’s a couple interesting things to note here, the first of them being that both Mony Mony and I Think We’re Alone now were originally put out by Tommy James & The Shondells roughly 20 years prior, and those were also big hits.
Also of note is that Billy Idol had put out Mony Mony back in 1981 on his Don’t Stop EP, but this tune started hitting the charts once it was included on his live album Vital Idol, released that same year in 1987. Fans started incorporating their own lewd lyrics to the chorus, which Idol would later add to his own live performances as well.
#9870, @gfnthedrop, pod.
So, that’s enough with the monocle and the shameless promo. We’ll keep it dance and synth-centric with a bit of French twist coming up and Phantom Youth starts off with Christine & The Queens along with Honey Dijon to follow through. The angles & dimensions of the triangle will be discussed after but now it’s time to spin. THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday.
______
The Drop is back for our final airbreak of the first quarter tonight. Danno here, how’s it going? Glad to have you with us, you’re just the bee’s knees. To the rundown of that first triangle of new stuff we just let into the atmosphere, that was…
Phantom Youth – Stay & Run (…the latest from the duo out of the Toronto area is out as of last Thursday, this being part of a little 3 track mini EP and the title track at that. Keep an eye on this group, they’re really doing some interesting stuff.)
Christine & The Queens – Tu sais ce q’uil me faut (…this tune meaning You know what I want was part of the Redcar les adorables etoile or Redcar the adorable stars. Admittedly, this album dropped on Nov 11, but I had some stylistic troubles last Monday fitting it anywhere vs what dropped, and voila…this week was perfect to give it a spin.)
Honey Dijon – La Femme Fantastique (…this tune features on the Chicago house veteran’s sophomore LP, Black Girl Magic, which just dropped on Friday. Deservedly making some serious waves since release, do also check Miss Honey Dijon’s DJ sets online if you wanna bump the right way.)
Alright, so let’s step away from the synth and the beat machine a touch to finish off the first fourth tonight. Up next we have the latest from Tennis called One Night with The Valet, and this one heralds the famed married duo out of Colorado’s latest LP Pollen, which drops February 10 via their cheekily named Mutually Detrimental label. Benny Sings is gonna close the door on part 1 with a collab he just released over the weekend co-produced by Kenny Beats, and our final tune tonight is called The World. THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday night.
Tennis – One Night with The Valet
Benny Sings – The World

Back on The Drop and slow spoon sautee hath now commenced, fair listener. Danno here on the mic going through our new favorites just out over the weekend, and we just cold opened with a couple of very warm slow burners, so let’s go to the details...
Cigarettes After Sex – Pistol (…this is the latest tune from the band, a standalone single for now but there is a third album announcement still waiting in the wings although nothing was illuminated further on that front. Thus, we’ll just have to wait.)
Joesef – Just Come Home with Me Tonight (…this is an independent artist out of Glasgow for those unfamiliar, and this is the latest from the keenly anticipated debut album called Permanent Damage, which drops in full on January 13 next year.)
Pod, socials, etc…
Alright, so let’s get in some more tunes tonight before we talk about who’s coming to Korea soon to finish the 2nd quarter. Up next we start with the latest from Phoebe Bridgers and then we have the latest from Andy Shauf and Weyes Blood, all of which we’ll discuss after each discus, but for now THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday night.
____
Moving towards the finish of the first half tonight and our concert spotlight for this week, we just wrapped up another taste sam-gak of new cuts so let’s recap the who and what and where but maybe not the why. That was…
Phoebe Bridgers – So Much Wine (…well, it’s not quite Thanksgiving but it will be on Thursday so why not start getting in some Christmas vibes. Of course, this is a traditional thing for Bridgers, who releases a Holiday single every year around this time.)
Andy Shauf – Wasted On You (…out a week ago, this single announced a new album from Shauf called Norm. The album will drop in full on February 10 via ANTI-, and unlike the previous from last year, will not be a sudden surprise drop although we do kinda like those.)
Weyes Blood – Children of the Empire (…one highly anticipated album is And In The Darkness, Hearts Aglow, which is Weyes Blood’s third career LP. If you haven’t gotten a full listen yet, do add it, as it’s definitely on my short list for album of the year.)
So, that’s it for the new tunes tonight and now we feature what’s on the way here in Korea, and for our final tunes we feature FKJ or French Kiwi Juice, who’s coming back to KBS Arena up in Seoul next Monday (I know, kind of a bummer). We’ll rock the latest from FKJ called Us, which is the Colors Show version of that cut, and then we’ll finish with the big guns featuring Papa Sego and TADOW. THIS is The Drop and it is indeed halftime.
FKJ – Us (A Colors Show)
FKJ & Masego – Tadow

Part III: New Pop

Nicki Minaj with MALUMA & Myriam Fares – Tukoh Taka (Official FFF Anthem)
- The FIFA anthem for this year’s world cup, which just kicked off with hosts Qatar and Ecuador squaring off with the South Americans emerging victorious 2-0.
- Korea of course has a very tough sled ahead in Group H, with the black stars of Ghana, Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal, along with Uruguay. That all kicks off Thursday night. Hwaiting!
Chance the Rapper feat King Promise – YAH Know
- A new standalone single from the Chicago-bred rapper is out as of this weekend, this one featuring King Promise from Ghana on the vox. We’ve been promised a new project called 2000 for a while now, which apparently was delayed due to sample clearance issues, and with this we have a new project announced called Star Line Gallery.
- Is that just a new name for 2000? Time will tell there.
Dermot Kennedy – One Life
- Just out Friday is the sophomore LP from Irish singer-songwriter Dermot Kennedy.
- The album, called Sonder, was celebrated with a busking session in London’s Flat Iron Square on the day of release.
Fana Hues – float
- Just out Friday and tis the season is the Deluxe version of flora + fana, which came out initially on March 25.
- This would be one of the tunes ostensibly left on the cutting room floor, but if you haven’t checked that LP, a very good listen front to back if you have not done so.
Cautious Clay – Lip Service
- Just out Friday is the latest EP from Cautious Clay called Thin Ice on the Cake.
- The EP was heralded with the release of Burning Up Slow back in late September. Not a lot of reviews to go on here though from fans or critics, so we’ll see what the reax are on the way.
JP Saxe – The Good Parts
- The latest from the Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter just dropped last Friday, just a standalone.
- This tune will get the national TV treatment coming up shortly from now in the US, as Saxe will performit live on NBC’s Today Show in celebration of the release.
Kelela – On The Run

Part IV – Fresh K Cuts

ilbum - Goodbye 마음 정리
- This is a tune from a lovely, mellow album called Point of View by the young artist out of Korea.
- The album dropped November 5th in full, although that’s just about all the info I have right now.
Lim Haeum feat Wildberry – See you my friend
- This is a tune that was part of a 7” single that dropped on November 5 called Seeya.
- Not a lot of info on the artist background-wise, but this comes on the heels of the 2021 EP called High. A really nice set of multigenre stuff to be found inside the discography, definitely give it more of a listen if you dug that.

HEEO – Destiny or Challenge
- Kind of a bubbling under K-pop artist right here, this being the third in a series of singles released since debut last year.
- Still a very young artist, HEEO was originally a member of the girl group 4TEN from 2015-18, and attended Kyungin Women’s University.

DIFF feat Nam Ji In – MASIJA
- Two very young budding artists right here on this tune with very little background.
- Both DIFF and Nam Ji In have only been around professionally for a few years, with this being DIFF’s 3rd career single and first in three years’ time.

SURL – Around
- This band just keeps going from strength to strength, and this tune appeared on the quartet out of Seoul’s debut album Of Us, which just dropped in late October and has been bumping around on my playlist pretty steadily ever since.
sweetch feat sooon – a u r o r a
- This is the latest from a very accomplished producer, but given the solo work, you might be surprised at the production credits, which are generally in the Korean ballads category.
- Sweetch has worked with a variety of artists like UP10TION, Kim Tae Woo, and Infinite amongst others. The artist also featured on the KBS series The Unit.
- This tune dropped on November 6 with the instrumental on the flip.
Gwak Tae Poong – 후일담 Memory
- Our final tune tonight is from an album just out on Saturday called I’m A Rockstar or 나는야 락스타!
- Gotta say congrats to this young man out of Seoul on the debut LP, self-released at just 20 years old.
