What is WORDTheatre® Weekly: A Short Story Podcast Where the Best Authors & Actors Meet...?

Each week, WORDTheatre® shares a brilliant short story performed live in LA, NY or London by a great actor, usually with the author in the room to hear their story being brought to life. Like what you hear? Visit WORDTheatre.org/Membership/ or if you are near the UK, visit WORDTheatreUK.org to enjoy live events and recordings by becoming a Patron or Enthusiast Member! WORDTheatre® is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in the US and a Dual Charitable Trust in the UK. We are on a mission to make a better world one story at a time.

Welcome to WORDTheatre Weekly: The Short Story
Podcast where great authors and actors meet. I’m your host, Cedering Fox, WORDTheatre’s Founder & Artistic Director.

We had the most amazing time in New York City earlier this month, where we shared stories by some of our favorite Pushcart Prize winning authors at our show, Growing Pains. We find so many of the writers we work with in the pages of the Pushcart Prize. There are fifty volumes, one annual anthology that comes out each year, and now we have the best of the 21st century, the first 25 years of the Pushcart Prize. We really recommend that you purchase The Pushcart Book of Twenty-First Century Poetry and Prose. It’s edited by Bill Henderson and a whole slew of contributors. Bill has been doing this for the last 50 years. If there’s any book to take with you to a desert island, it’s any of the last 50 years of the Pushcart Prize. So, we are going to share a story with you today by the one and only, Mary Gordon, one of the absolute best writers living today.

Before we get started, please note that WORDTheatre holds the copyright to these recordings and no portion of anything you hear on WORDTheatre Weekly, our short story podcast, may be reproduced without permission.

And now, here is Tedra Millan performing “Day Care” by Mary Gordon

MILLAN PERFORMS THE PIECE.

You’ve just heard Tedra Millan perform “Day Care” written by Mary Gordon.

If you'd like to purchase books by Mary, or any of the other wonderful authors we’ve featured on this podcast, please visit bookshop.org/shop/wordtheatre and you’ll be helping two nonprofits. Also, I would really recommend that you pick up the Pushcart Book of 21st Century Poetry and Prose.

If you’re in Southern California this summer, we invite you to join us at our next event, California Women: Golden State Writing in Performance, this Thursday, June 4th at the William Turner Gallery in Santa Monica. We have a great lineup, with Constance Marie, Mishel Prada, Mimi Rogers, Fay Hauser, and Midori Francis who will read fiction by talents Lisa Alvarez, Carribean Fragoza, Michelle Latiolais, Toni Ann Johnson, and Dominica Phetteplace, who’s coming down from the Bay Area. Tickets are available at wordtheatre.org/events, and we hope to see you there!
