Plenty with Kate Northrup

What if the reason your money isn't moving the way you want has nothing to do with discipline — and everything to do with patterns you haven't been able to see yet?

In part three of the Recalibration Series, I'm walking you through the subtle, often invisible money leaks that quietly drain financial energy from high-achieving, high-responsibility people — even when you're doing everything "right."

In this episode, you'll learn:
  • Why money leaks are a structural issue, not a discipline or capacity issue — and why that distinction changes everything
  • How your hidden money ecosystem (the energetics and the engineering) shapes your entire financial reality
  • The four most common money leaks I see in high-capacity, high-earning people — including scarcity thinking, money avoidance, no containment architecture, and earning as the only strategy
  • Why scarcity is a paradigm, not a circumstance — and how it operates independently of income level
  • How money avoidance shows up as vagueness, not just fear — and why what you don't regularly see can't support you
  • What "containment architecture" is and why the absence of it means money arrives but has nowhere to go
  • Why using yourself as the infrastructure is a guaranteed path to burnout — and what to build instead
Key insight from this episode: This is not a capacity issue. It's not a discipline issue. It's a pattern — and most of these leaks are ones you've never even identified as problems, because some of them are societally celebrated.

Awareness is the first step to real transformation. Once you can see the leak, you can start to change everything.

“You don’t have a money problem—you have a pattern that hasn’t been made conscious yet.” –Kate Northrup

When Does Money Actually Feel Good?

I've watched a pattern play out for years—and I know you've felt it, too.

Making good money doesn't automatically make you good with money.

Even as my income increased, the stress didn't disappear. There was still that low-grade pressure. That quiet hum of not-enough. I kept asking myself: When do I finally get to exhale?

I know I'm not alone in that.

I've worked with brilliant, high-capacity people — earning anywhere from $50K to $300M—who are still walking around feeling uneasy every time they open their banking app. Guilty when they spend on themselves. Confused about where the money actually goes. Like they should have figured this out by now. Successful on the outside, but not truly resourced on the inside.

More money alone doesn't fix this.

Because money isn't just math—it's an ecosystem. And if the architecture underneath isn't designed to support wealth, more income just amplifies the pressure.

So what actually works?

Good With Money is a 3-day live experience designed to help you upgrade the system beneath your financial life — so money can finally feel as good as it looks.

Day 1: Audit Your Hidden Money Ecosystem

Identify where your system is strong, where it's leaking, and whether it's currently built for survival or for expansion.

Day 2: Install Financial Infrastructure

Strengthen the foundation beneath your money so it can come in, stay, and grow — sustainably.

Day 3: Your Relaxed Money Roadmap

Walk away with a clear, structured plan for the kind of expansion your system can actually support.

This happens once a year.

If you're ready to stop managing money from pressure — and start experiencing it from a place of safety, clarity, and real support — this is your moment.

More money isn't the answer. A stewarded system is.

Kate Northrup:

This is not a discipline issue. It's more subtle. It's more sneaky. It's more structural. There's this unconscious or semi conscious idea that somehow we're gonna have a healthy relationship with money without ever paying attention to it.

Kate Northrup:

And that makes no sense. Welcome to Plenty, a weekly recalibration of power, money, and safety for high capacity humans. I'm Kate Northrup, best selling author and creator of Relaxed Money, and this is where neuroscience meets ancient wisdom meets real wealth strategy. This is the sacred conversation at the intersection of money, the body, and the life you're truly here to live. If you're ready to reimagine what's possible for yourself and for the world, you're in the right place.

Kate Northrup:

Let's go. Welcome to part three of the recalibration series. If you're just diving in with us and you wanna start here, that's great. However, I do want you to know that the recalibration is a four part series here on Plenty designed for people who keep a lot of things moving for themselves and for others who are ready to recalibrate their relationship with money, power, and safety. So we've already gone over in part one how to increase your income without increasing pressure, and then we got into what state is your hidden money ecosystem in.

Kate Northrup:

And now today, we're gonna talk about the subtle leaks that are shaping your financial life and where to start shifting. So today, we're gonna dive into nine energy leaks that I see behind the scenes, quietly draining resources, financial time, energy, emotional resources from people who are high responsibility, high achievement, people who look really good on the outside, who are the strong one, who are the responsible one. And the thing is, if you feel like you're the one making everything happen, these leaks are really, really common. So these are not your run of the mill money leaks that just anyone are going to have. These are specialized.

Kate Northrup:

These are refined. These are more specific and often sneakier. So I'm gonna name them not so that you can judge yourself, but so that you can know, oh, that's a leak. I didn't even know that was leaking my financial energy. And then, of course, we can talk about where to start plugging those leaks.

Kate Northrup:

Before we dive in, this episode is part of the recalibration series, and there's a companion recalibration field guide to go with it. It's where you'll locate yourself inside what we're about to cover, audit your hidden money ecosystem, and identify the one shift you can make right now that's gonna make the biggest difference. You can download it for free at katenorthrup.com/fieldguide and use it as you listen. The link is also in the show notes. Alright.

Kate Northrup:

Let's get into it. Please know this. This is not a capacity issue, because you and I both know you are a very high capacity individual, and this is not a discipline issue. If discipline were the issue, if you needed to be stronger and be smarter, you would have this handled already. It's more subtle.

Kate Northrup:

It's more sneaky. It's more structural. I want you to know that it's usually a pattern, not a problem. So it's probably something that hasn't been conscious, or at least it's been things these money leaks are things that you may not have even identified as even being a problem because some of them, honestly, are societally celebrated, and that's what makes them so insidious. Now a quick recap.

Kate Northrup:

We talked about in the last episode that your money life is shaped by your hidden money ecosystem. And what that means is that your hidden money ecosystem has two parts. It has the energetics, which include your thoughts, beliefs, your emotions, and your deeper, less conscious nervous system patterning around money. That's the stuff that no one else is ever gonna see, and you can't even see it, but you can feel it. And then we have the engineering, your actual behavior with money.

Kate Northrup:

What are you doing with your accounts? What's the money flow like? Do you have a system? Do you have infrastructure? Is there any structure there to hold your money so you don't have to hold everything?

Kate Northrup:

And then both together, the energetics and the engineering create the expression of your money. What is your actual money life like? That is a result of your hidden money ecosystem. And why I say it's hidden is because no one else is ever gonna see it. But it's the stuff that when you tend to it, it changes everything about not only how your financial life feels, but also how it looks and what a benefit.

Kate Northrup:

Right? Next, I wanna say that the state is the environment in which you're working in. Right? So the state of your garden, right, is the health of the ecosystem. How healthy is the soil?

Kate Northrup:

How much water is there? Do we need fertilizer? Do we need compost? Are there weeds? Is there enough sunlight?

Kate Northrup:

All of that stuff is the state of the ecosystem. Right? So we've identified your state in the last episode. If you haven't done it, you can go back and listen after this episode, or you can pause right now, and you can go back and listen to that. That is part two of the recalibration series.

Kate Northrup:

Now the patterns or the leaks that we're gonna identify today are what's actually happening inside the environment. So your hidden money ecosystem is the state, is the actual environment, and then the patterns or the leaks is what's happening inside your environment. So for example, in the overdrive state, which is one of the states we identified in the hidden money ecosystem and by the way, as a reminder, you can download the recalibration field guide, which is the companion to this four part series. It's gonna help you, you know, because it just outlines everything with some beautiful graphics so you can kind of get everything in a gestalt in one look. But it also will have the quiz in it so you can identify what state your hidden money ecosystem is in.

Kate Northrup:

And you can get that over at kate northrup dot com forward slash field guide, and the link is also in the show notes if you're driving. Now as an example, one of the states can be overdrive, and overdrive means you have a low sense of energetic safety with money, and you also have low structure. Like, so the energetics and the engineering are both low. Now some likely leaks in the overdrive state, so different hidden money ecosystem states can have different leaks within them. Those are the patterns or the leaks within that state.

Kate Northrup:

So some leaks for that might be earning as the only strategy because you have no containment. So that would be a leak within the overdrive state. Another example could be in the constriction state. Now constriction state is you have a low energetic and emotional safety around money, so there's, like, a core sense of scarcity, but you have a high infrastructure and high engineering. So some of the leaks in that state might be a scarcity paradigm and being in a state of over control, so trying too hard to be in control of your money.

Kate Northrup:

Another example is in the diffusion state where you have a high sense of emotional safety, so tremendous trust in money, sometimes to the point of spiritual bypassing, but low infrastructure and low structural integrity and systems, you might have the leaks of avoidance, being financially avoidant, or having no structure, no system for your money. So what's important to understand is that your state tells you the overall configuration that we handled in the last episode, and your patterns tell you what specifically is keeping that money ecosystem state in place. Okay? The leaks are they're not mistakes. They're not personal failures, and they are not personality flaws.

Kate Northrup:

So there's nothing wrong with you. Right? There's nothing wrong with you. But they're subtle, and they're often invisible patterns that are shaping how money moves through your life without your permission. That's what's really important here.

Kate Northrup:

These are either subconscious or unconscious. You don't know it's happening, but you are the recipient of the results of these leaks, and often, the results are not what you want. And so if you can identify the leaks, then you can plug the leaks, then you can get the results you want with your permission, consciously. These are especially common for high responsibility, incredibly capable people, which is why this is not just like a run of the mill money workshop for everyone. This is particularly for you you identify as, like, I'm a really smart, thoughtful person.

Kate Northrup:

Like, I've figured stuff out in my life. I'm ready to figure this part out too. I'm gonna go over four of these today. There's nine in total, and the rest of them are going to be revealed and explained and sort of unpacked in the Good With Money workshop. So if you've not yet signed up for Good With Money, go ahead and do that at katenorthrup.com/good, or go to the link in the show notes.

Kate Northrup:

Okay. Pattern number one or leak number one is being in the scarcity paradigm. Now I wanna be super clear. You can be in the paradigm of scarcity at any income level. I know people who have a relatively small income who actually operate in tremendous abundance and a prosperity paradigm.

Kate Northrup:

They have a sense that there's more than enough. They have a sense of gratitude for the richness of their life. And I know people who literally make millions and millions of dollars every year. So so much money who are in a paradigm of scarcity, operating as though they're going to run out at any time. And that has the negative consequence not only of creating a constant stress response in their own body, it also limits their enjoyment of life.

Kate Northrup:

It also limits their generosity, and it also limits the flow of resources, both financial, emotional, spiritual, and otherwise. So a state of scarcity, number one, is a lie. The lie of scarcity says that there's not enough to go around, but what's actually true is that there are enough resources on the planet for every single person and being to live a good life. And I mean resources like sunlight, water, food, shelter. There's enough, actually, for all of us.

Kate Northrup:

There's enough. And yet the lie of scarcity says there's not enough, and I'm going to run out. And therefore, I need to hoard resources. I can't spend. I can't give.

Kate Northrup:

I'm scared. Everything's gonna run out, and it creates a baseline or even loud rumble of fear. And it has so many negative impacts on our health, on our psyche, and on our relationships, and on our financial life. So it's an internal atmosphere. It's not a circumstance.

Kate Northrup:

I wanna be super clear because there are people who technically are experiencing not having enough who are actually operating still in a paradigm of plenty. And there are people who are operating in a circumstance where there is plenty who are operating in a paradigm of scarcity. So please understand this has nothing to do with an amount of income or a certain net worth. This is a leak that can be leaking anybody at any income level. It does not shift with your income.

Kate Northrup:

It lives in the energetics layer of your hidden money ecosystem. And in the next episode of the recalibration series, I am going to walk you through the wealth stewardship pyramid, and this particular leak is connected to level one of the wealth stewardship pyramid, which has everything to do with safety. And if safety is not established here, nothing above it in the pyramid will ever feel stable no matter how much you build, no matter how much you earn, no matter how much you inherit, no matter what windfall comes in. If you're operating with a fundamental leak of scarcity, no amount of money can ever heal that. That is an energetic pattern that literally lives in your brain and your body, in your nervous system, and it can be repatterned.

Kate Northrup:

And that's some of the work that we're gonna get going on in Good With Money, which is really exciting. Now leak number two is money avoidance. So this is when you're not looking at the full picture. You have, like, maybe a partial awareness. Maybe you know how much you make, you don't know how much you spend.

Kate Northrup:

Maybe you know the revenue, but not the profit. Maybe you don't quite know what you pay your people, or maybe you don't quite know what it costs for raising your kids or for your household expenses. There's vagueness with this financial leak. It's very, very common. I used to operate very much with a money avoidance leak and a vagueness leak.

Kate Northrup:

These two are, you know, essentially the same thing. In terms of your hidden money ecosystem, this is a lack of visibility, and it has to do with the engineering portion of your hidden money ecosystem because it's a behavior. But it is often rooted in an energetic state that is a low sense of safety. So it's all threaded in there, but it has very real impact in the engineering aspect of your hidden money ecosystem. What is really important to understand is that what you don't regularly see can't support you.

Kate Northrup:

And when we think about our money as a relationship, right, so we have a relationship with our money. You have a relationship with your kids or a relationship with your friends or a relationship with your long term partner. If you want to have a healthy relationship with the people in your life, you need to look them in the eye, spend time with them, pay attention to them. We all know that. Right?

Kate Northrup:

If we wanna have a great relationship with our kids, we need to be present with them. But somehow, there's this unconscious or semi conscious idea that somehow we're gonna have a healthy relationship with money without ever paying attention to it, and that makes no sense. So the money avoidance leak is a very common one, especially for super high capacity people who have an ability to perform well and just make more money. So rather than tending to what's already there, there's often a huge opportunity to create tremendous prosperity from what we already have, but the default is I will just make more. And there's so many patterns in there, again, that we're gonna dive deeper into inside good with money.

Kate Northrup:

Now leak number three that I wanna identify because it's so common is no containment architecture. So no containment architecture, of course, is related to two different states in the hidden money ecosystem, and that would be the overdrive state and also the diffusion state. This is when money arrives, but it has no clear direction. There's, like, no masculine energy. There's no voltage here.

Kate Northrup:

There's not clarity. There's not direction. There's not structure. There's not boundaries. And decisions happen around money reactively as opposed to proactively.

Kate Northrup:

So you might be up in the middle of the night moving money around and wondering, ugh. How much do I need in my business checking account? Can I invest in this thing? I don't know. I'll just shuffle this around, And, it's not a mature way of handling your money, and the good news is it's not hard to set up that infrastructure, that architecture.

Kate Northrup:

You just need to know what the pieces are that you need to know, and, of course, we will dive into that in Good With Money. This is an engineering gap. So in your hidden money ecosystem, this is clearly an engineering gap. Now it may have a relationship with some sort of emotional imprint and some sort of more unconscious programming, but it definitely shows up primarily in the engineering side of things. This is really important.

Kate Northrup:

Money arriving is not the same thing as money staying. And a lot of people with the no architecture leak have had experiences of making good money and then having no idea where it went and not having anything to show for it. So if that resonates with you, you have this leak, and the good news is it's not hard to fix. Now the fourth leak that is really common is earning as the only strategy in your toolbox. You're like a one trick pony, and the one trick is, I'll just make more money.

Kate Northrup:

I already spoke about this. This is an overreliance on output. This is really common for people who were celebrated in their upbringing for achievement and performance. And this is using yourself as the infrastructure. And I can tell you, eventually, that will exhaust you and lead to burnout and crash.

Kate Northrup:

So this is a distorted relationship between energetics and engineering because there's an emotional set point of perhaps a level of addiction to stress, addiction to pressure, a feeling like if I'm not performing, then I don't deserve to earn money. And then there's also a lack of engineering because you can be in overdrive. You can be in I'll just make more money for a period of time, but if someone were to get sick, if there's a maternity leave, if something with your earnings, like if a deal goes through or a contract ends or you lose a client, and I'll just make more money is your only way, and you don't have the soft cushion to land on financially, it can be pretty terrifying, actually. And so the good news is per everything I've already talked about, it is easy to fix. There are things you can put in place and build that architecture, that infrastructure.

Kate Northrup:

But when you have the all just make more as your only tool, it's where you become the system that your life depends on, and that eventually is deeply exhausting, or it's a for sure path to adrenal fatigue. Okay. Now which one of these felt the most familiar to you? Was it the scarcity paradigm? Was it money avoidance?

Kate Northrup:

Was it no containment architecture, or was it earning as the only strategy? Now remember, those are only four of the nine most common money leaks that I see with super successful people, but it's important just to identify which one of those hits the closest to home right now. I'm just gonna pause. Now where do you feel that in your body? I'm just curious.

Kate Northrup:

Where do you feel that leak in your body? Ask yourself that question now. I wanna reassure you, you do not need to fix everything now. You just need to see clearly what's actually happening. Because once the leaks are identified, just like if you had a hole in your roof, once you know where the leak is, you can patch that sucker right up.

Kate Northrup:

And so the good news is you are in the right place to do just that. Today, we took a huge step. We created awareness, and awareness creates transformation. By the time you're aware of something, you are so much further along towards the transformation than you could possibly imagine. Now once you see the pattern, of course, the next question becomes, how do we actually build something different?

Kate Northrup:

And we are going to talk about the steps, the trajectory, the ascension path in the next episode, in the final episode of the recalibration. And so that's going to be episode four, which is about the wealth stewardship pyramid. But right now, what you wanna do is make sure that you have downloaded the companion guide, which is the recalibration field guide at katenorthrup.com/fieldguide, and that you're signed up for the next step, which is my free three day financial upgrade experience where we are going to assess the health of your hidden money ecosystem together in community.
