Welcome to The Figuring It Out Podcast.
At 22, I took the plunge to go on the entrepreneurial journey and start a fitness business, 7 years later I’d been the nutritionist for 2 elite sports clubs and private coach to some of the worlds best sportsmen and women.
Now it’s my mission to show fitness coaches how you can put yourself in a league of their own, become the go to coach, and finally eliminate the self-doubt and imposter syndrome that's holding you back from building the business of your dreams.
This podcast will help you figure out how to thrive and conquer the fear that comes with the lonely entrepreneurial journey.
If fear is the only thing stopping us from achieving our dreams and we only fear what we don't understand, then the antidote to fear is knowledge. All we have to do is find out who has the knowledge that we need to conquer our fears and achieve our entrepreneurial dreams. My name is Callum Walker, and welcome to the podcast that will help you figure it out and conquer this lonely entrepreneurial journey. Welcome to the podcast. What am I gonna talk to you about today?
Callum Walker:Well, do you ever feel? Do you ever feel sorry. Do you ever feel like it's just not working? You're putting in all of this work, time, energy, effort, grind, sacrifice, emotion, life force, and getting nowhere. Nothing is happening.
Callum Walker:My god. Do I know that feeling well? You're almost like, you know, and look, that still creeps in my mind. It really does. I've been running a business for ten years, and there are certainly times where I'm like, I've been doing this for ten years, and this is legitimately all I've done.
Callum Walker:Is that it? I see all of these people doing this, this, this. Why can't I do that? But then I just missed the thought because it doesn't serve me. But then also what I'm going to share with you today is a way to be able to dismiss that thought.
Callum Walker:And if you do feel like you're not where you should be, you're not progressing at the rate that you should if you're not where you are where you want to be. This will really help. One second, sorry, put on do not disturb. Just need to do that just to make sure that nobody calls me. So, yeah.
Callum Walker:So how how can we do that? Well, it's interesting because I really do feel like pretty much all of the lessons that we need to learn as entrepreneurs really and the same as coaches, really can just be learnt from nature and seeing how nature works and also seeing how nature doesn't work. Because I think for us as humans, like we can really, really suck at getting confused when things don't go the way that we think that they should when, you know, from a natural perspective, it doesn't work that way. So it's interesting because me and Alice were having this conversation earlier where we were talking about putting on weight. And specifically, she was talking about, you know, there's an Instagram influencer that she's followed for a long time who previously was very caught up in like the diet culture and stuck in the diet culture and really kind of pushing quite a, you know, restrictive sort of way of eating and all these sorts of stuff.
Callum Walker:And she basically has like recently said, like, look, you know, I'm actually a little bit heavier than I was. I'm not as lean as I was, but I'm stronger and this is the healthiest I've ever been. And I said to Alison, I said, do you know something that I think would be such a valuable reframe? And I don't think this just applies to women. It also applies to men.
Callum Walker:Instead of looking at it as, oh, I've put weight on, actually see it as my body's just put away additional energy for storage. And don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that putting weight on is a good thing all of the time. But, you know, especially kind of I see now, like, you know, someone puts a pound on or whatever. It's like, well, is that actually a bad thing?
Callum Walker:Like, it's almost kind of only labeled a bad thing by saying I've put on weight. But if you termed it differently as instead of I put on weight to my body's just put some energy away for storage, well, that's a natural process that naturally we are going to go through periods where, you know, the body's going to put energy away for storage and the body's going to draw on energy for storage. And that's the same with us from a monetary perspective. We're going to have times when we're spending money and we're going to have times when we're saving money. So if you ever get that like pure, when you look at your bank account, well, you probably spent some, but that's the point.
Callum Walker:Isn't the point of money to spend it, not just hoard it and hide it away? But you're going to go through times where you're harvesting and you're going to go through times when you're planting. Like, that's just the nature of the way in which the world works. It does from a natural perspective, but we expect this consistent, you know, this consistent progression that is just linear. But life doesn't work that way.
Callum Walker:Nature doesn't work that way. And I kinda come back to an important point on this that, you know, I remember me and Alice also once had this conversation where we were talking about fat from a nutritional perspective. We were talking about it in the sense of, I remember Alice said to me, she was like, do you think people are scared of eating fat because it's called fat? And I was like, yes. Absolutely.
Callum Walker:I said, if it was called a lipid hydrocarbon, do you think it has the same level of fear attached to it? No. But that's what it is. But based on the label that we have given it, it has a different meaning. And I think that that is a really, really important point that it's the meanings that we attach to things that really causes the emotional reaction.
Callum Walker:Label one thing as good and another thing as bad. And off the back of that, we then attach ourselves and then we kind of like, you know, end up in an emotional pit and everything goes to shit. So I kind of come back to that point there of, first of all, when it comes to your business, well, what season are you in? Are you in the season of planting seeds or are you in the season of harvesting seeds? But then the other thing, which has really helped me when I've gone through periods of comparison syndrome, gone through periods of not feeling like I'm where I should be, not feeling like I'm progressing at the speed at which I am, Really kind of like hit me most when we came back from Sri Lanka.
Callum Walker:So right now I'm filming this. We've got the most beautiful fields. I've mentioned on the podcast since we've moved down here. We've got the most beautiful fields out the back. And it's really interesting.
Callum Walker:I've only been gone for two and a half weeks. And two and a half weeks ago, I actually recorded a podcast. I was walking down here, and this field was barren. All of the trees had no leaves on them. The the field itself was just like it was just kind of mud and dirt.
Callum Walker:And it was mad. Like mad. I came back, well, five days ago, walked on the same field two weeks later, and it's just sprouted. It's just green everywhere. Like the trees have just fully gone out.
Callum Walker:The field is complete in two weeks. Now, what's interesting is if I'd have stayed here and stood here in this field for the past two weeks and just looked at the field every day, do you think I would have seen the growth? No, I wouldn't have. But the problem is that with us in society, we're probably constantly glued to Instagram. I run my business through Instagram and it's hard to not get sucked into checking Instagram every minute of the day.
Callum Walker:Why? Because it signals up like, Oh, have I got any likes? Oh, have I got any engagement? Oh, have I got any DMs potentially inquiring about my service? You're almost kind of consistently checking, consistently checking WhatsApp for conversations with clients, consistently checking Instagram to see where it's going.
Callum Walker:But that's the same as me almost standing in this field, staring at the plant. And I'm constantly staring at the plant being like, why is it not growing? Why is it not growing? But it is growing. It is.
Callum Walker:If you just plant the seed, nurture it, water it, feed it, and leave it alone, it will grow. Sometimes we need to take a step out in order to actually see what's happening. I only saw the immense amount of growth and the speed at which this field was growing off the back of getting away from the field and seeing it. And all of a sudden, it's gone into bloom. Now the thing is it looks as if the, you know, the, the, everything was just completely dead, but it wasn't.
Callum Walker:It was dormant. It was just happening under the radar. You couldn't see it. And we had another really interesting experience that happened when, yeah, when we were on safari in Sri Lanka. And it literally again, it's amazing how you catch yourself out.
Callum Walker:So so we went on safari, and I don't know what it is, but my favorite animal is the elephant. My favorite animal is just the elephant. Don't know what it is. They're just so majestic and just magic. And we were sat in the we were sat in the jeep and basically there was this one elephant who he's a bit of a troublemaker.
Callum Walker:I can't remember his name. I think it was like Majumbo or something like that. I'm not making that up. It was something like Majumbo. He was one of the biggest elephants in the national park, and he's got tusks.
Callum Walker:So they call him tuskers. And he's a real kind of like he's a bit of a naughty one. Like, you know, he's he's flipped Jeeps over and whatever. And I don't know why. I just wanted to find Majumbo.
Callum Walker:That's not even his name, but we'll call him Majumbo for now. And and basically, we found Majumbo, and he was hiding in the he was hiding in this bush, massive, but you could just see him, like, the things. And basically, our guide then talks about when he told us about when Majumbo's mom was pregnant with him. And he said, yeah, an elephant is actually pregnant for twenty two months of the year. So for twenty two months, not twenty two months a year, twenty two months.
Callum Walker:An elephant is pregnant for twenty two months. And I said, well, yeah, of course. Have you seen the size of the thing? At all, of course, it takes that long to actually produce something that big and that grand. And that's where I caught myself out.
Callum Walker:I was like, well, yeah, if you're trying to build an empire, if you're trying to build something big, it's gonna take a bit of time. I know it's a cliche, but my mom always said Rome wasn't built in a day. Like, it's not. But I don't know what it is. I don't wanna blame social media and say, oh, because of social media.
Callum Walker:No. I don't think it is just because of social media. I think it's a human tendency of impatience to almost kind of, like, not be in line with the seasons and be in harmony with the fact that things do take time. And we've got to constantly water that seed, nurture it, look after it, and also get clear on, well, what are we actually trying to build? Because it gives you that gives you patience.
Callum Walker:And I think that's why as well, like, I think you have to enjoy the whole process of it, because when you enjoy that process, you get positive feedback that isn't just associated with the specific outcome we're probably looking for, which is money. We get the feedback of, you know, say, for example, like me just recording a podcast, it really makes me feel good. Just talking to you guys and hearing feedback from you guys about the episodes that you really enjoy, it makes me feel good. It makes me this doesn't feel like work. I'll tell you one other thing.
Callum Walker:So we're in this field right now, and I can see a few little young lads doing that Duke of Edinburgh expedition. My god. I remember mine. Mine's still on my CV. I've only actually had one other job, and that CV, I still have for some reason.
Callum Walker:My Duke of Edinburgh gold award. My god. I'm I tell you what. I'm so jealous. Like, these lads, they're doing their Duke of Edinburgh in a flat field in Cheshire in the sun.
Callum Walker:I did mine in bloody Snowdonia in the snow. It was minus six in the snow, and they're just god. They look fucking miserable, though. They look so sad. So there you go.
Callum Walker:Just think. Could be worse. You could be on your Duke of Edinburgh award right now. So if you do feel like you suck, go and look at someone doing the Duke of Edinburgh. But no.
Callum Walker:Like, if you do feel like you're behind, you're not. You're exactly where you're supposed to be. And just remember, like, the more we can operate in line with the way in which nature operates, the easier this thing will be.
