Chief Meteorologist Jamie Arnold and WMBF News Today Meteorologist Andrew Dockery talk all things weather – but also provide a casual conversation about their lives.
all right hello and welcome to
are you cirrus episode number
thirty three the next to the
last episode of season to it's
crazy to think that we've done
thirty three of these already
known i'm really excited for
this one and we're going to
go to dive into it quickly
but first end of november
yeah hurricane season done
done at least by the books i
was saying by the books one
of these years mother nature
doesn't like you know play
exactly by the rules but for
the most thanksgiving done yep
christmas music on if you're
one of those people to wait
toward the end of thanksgiving
welcome to the club or family
now in it is now we're we can
all sink up but the anti tree
before thanksgiving people
can finally relax there's
some people in the news room
i hope they can just listen
to that clip because i've
been listening since the first
november i think we dive into
it again yeah and really get
into this and i'll let you
introduce yeah your internet
yeah introduce call introduce
i feel like i know this person
same same and we've actually
never met until literally he
walked in the door for this
without further do it is mitch
west someone who is quickly
growing not only sort of in
the carolina weather community
just in the storm chaser
community in general from
south carolina kinda started
following each other on twitter
like you're hitting all of it
and you're getting good really
in your in your get a big
audience i mean you're yeah
start out in south carolina
then went to the southeast then
basically labeled it as the
eastern us and people trying
request to do the western us
so you know i started taking
some shots at that but that's
tricky you know so many micro
climates out there mountains
regions and i just give my
best guests at it but yeah
yeah definitely started just
here in south carol just kept
going spent awesome so let's
go let's go back to the very
beginning where did like your
passion for weather come from
my grandpa calm up oppo yet
he's passed now but he you
know i just just sit on the
recliner with them yeah watch
a weather channel kind of like
a lot of people story who has
the passion passion for weather
just selling a recliner whether
on watch the local in the
eighth and just every time i
went over to his house that's
that's the channel would be on
we just sit there and watch a
weather channel together and
you know somewhere along the
line pretend teenage years
it grew more yeah growing up
something bigger and it just
never stopped growing but
that's where the core of it
came from much word originated
from yeah i love that so much
also we'll talk more about your
youtube channel because i think
that's where i didn't know
you did that at first found
each other on twitter jamie
was like all me and everything
this mitch west love what he
does and then one morning i
saw that i was up and you were
office and what is this mandate
and wisely posting youtube for
people they don't know and will
give all the details store you
can catch up you do a forecast
daily forecast video that
dives into the united states in
detail why we wanted to bring
you on to argue series because
i think our listeners in our
yours can learn from what
you're teaching but i want to
go back to the very first time
you did a video i don't know if
you remember what that was like
where did the idea come from
and what sparked that interest
so kind of goes back to twitter
i still call twitter but yeah
i started a twitter account
on december twenty fifteen
okay and i would just post
regularly kind of like a lot
of weather enthusiasm people
out there and i'll just post
all the time and we had bigger
events i would post about it
and even you know which is
normal weather county right
now just post imposed and four
and a half five years on down
the road you get to december
twenty twenty i thought i put
a lot effort to this what's
the way i can get back so you
know i was kind of before you
ryan halls and all the other
huge other people that are out
there and but there was still
a couple people who did it but
you know i i just toss around
the idea on my head and i just
could not let go and also you
know what i'm gonna use january
first twenty twenty to be the
start of youtube and see where
it goes not started in my shed
as i i'm still not great with
technology still not great with
it at all which is crazy coming
from someone who has a you know
semi successful youtube channel
i'm put you know a story in
my shed actually had just
stay camera set up a motion if
you go way back to some older
videos you'll see it it's just
state it's just a camera only
just talking for about five
ten minutes and i would have
to actually edit like still
for my tropical tibets into
the video it would take so
long but i was just overworking
myself i'm thinking too much
into it and all i had to do
the entire town was download
a screen courting recording
like software or something
yeah so when i did that late
twenty twenty that's when the
growth the road kind of went
like this to like that and but
yeah i mean that's that's where
that's where you tube started
yeah but you know the growth
know if you know this but the
criteria with you to go to get
a thousand subscribers which
be taking those probably and
four thousand watch hours
and over running one of your
period so that was my goal
how to do it in a year and i
did eleven and a half months
was a grand did it and i
guess the rest of history
what happens when you do that
do you you apply to be monitors
so okay so our station standard
that's the seventy four now
seventy seventy nine we make
seventy nine dollars on this
get one hundred to pay out
could you imagine our first
check as do they bring it
in a check like no direct
appalles about mid month once
a month still though that
would be pretty it's pretty
cool how much you want that
we will never see if we we
brought on our news director
last week it was a pay by
the labors or seventy five
dollars at new set what's in
your coffee months like all
my fairly paid for the mikes
so when it comes to whether
you said you're interested in
whether began we talked about
the youtube channel tropical
ted bits we talked about that
many times on this forecasting
yeah what is forecasting start
for you where did you start
to grow into that role and
really become because let me
tell you you're one heck of a
forty eight you know yourself
yeah yeah first off credit goes
that everybody know whether
community even the so you guys
the people you don't even have
degrees i don't have a degree
and especially over the last
two three years i've tried
to soak in as much knowledge
as possible from other people
you know part of doing if
the forecasting is you know
just like you guys you know i
try to explain things to the
people in a way that they're
going to try that they're
going to understand so you
know you got a teater taught
nerded out but you wanna you
want to kind of get out in
the way where they're gonna
understand you and sometimes
you know you always gonna go
over board sometimes you know
you're just going to give the
surface information but most
of the people you view myself
appreciate it of course you
can occasionally get a comment
slight mitchell tell me if it's
gonna snow rain or not and just
have okay but the forecasting
really started just want to
start the youtube channel okay
it you know that the goal with
the channel was never just
storm chasing concept but i
would argue that's like twenty
five percent of the channel
you know when i ground storm
chase i'll put up load whatever
i got but i mean i would just
say forecasting started i
mean every any anybody has an
interest in whether i imagine
has maybe not interest and
getting up in front like you
guys and forecasting in front
of an audience but i'm sure
most at least talk weather with
people so and i think you're
a perfect example of how to
do it right bingo without the
hype we know you have a you
have so many competitors on
youtube who will post a lot
of you know that aren't quite
you know on par quite accurate
impact have already seen him
starting to show up this week
you know about some some crazy
weather events and you know the
the gfs for fourteen days out
and it's thrown up there and
you know it's it's all click
baked you're not doing that
which is which is great but i
think it's also great that so
many people have a really deep
interest in weather um just
true whether weenese and you
don't have to have the degree
to really embrace that and
you are again or the perfect
example where you just you
soak it in and you make the
most of it in your learn in
you you know and you can become
a very valuable member of the
weather community i love that
you know for sure that makes me
think of this podcast in a way
to there's been some episodes
where we've really nurted out
there's also been some episodes
and even some viewers from this
podcats who have like brought
up weather related terms i
want to learn more about this
which i feel like is what your
channels doing i will give
mitch even more benefit i feel
like every time i watch and
there's like a big storm coming
he'll call them out in a nice
way you'll say hey i'm seeing
all these posts that are coming
i don't fully buy that and
he's basically saying listen
i'm going to tell you what i
can tell you yeah and that's
it which i love and you do it
every single day i do want to
touch on storm chasing because
we're still interesting a lot
because that's discovered you
yeah i don't remember what
storm it was you want to but
let's go back to that first
storm chase okay because you
learn a lot one storm and we've
storm chase we have it's you
have probably as much you have
but you learn a lot what was
your first room shows like the
first real one was may fifth
twenty twenty very spontaneous
work full day work got off
work and there was a loan super
so up in the upstate of south
carolina i thought that was
twenty twenty was a crazy year
but it was a crazy year for
weather to people forget that
you know we all know about the
hurricane season but anyways
there was this loan storm just
and it was just your classic
look and super cell had the
hope that was getting going
to mass of hill core on it and
my cousin was living with us
at the tom and all down also
you want you to go up seventy
seven and j system he's like
yeah let's do it man and you
know he just he's just my cos
and he supports my interest
he doesn't have a real huge
passion with the weather but
but he's an energy junkie
like i am so we went up there
next thing we know we're like
ten miles from the storm it
goes tornado warned and add
a la lot less experience then
i would just weather and joe
i've learned a lot over the
last three years but getting
back to that this thing goes
tornado warrant final cloud
drops right in front of us
off seventy seven and it was
a big learning experience if i
would if we put to just stroke
five miles in a great fall
south carolina we would saw
the tornado end up dropping
off to but that was the first
rule chase and that was when
my eyes really opened up to
a real interest and weather
but the the real first lone
range shased it was serious was
probably more to the next year
twenty twenty one that's when
i first first saw my that's
why i saw my first tornado and
an alabama yeah i remember i
remember both of those events
i can remember i can still see
the pictures of the in my head
of the yeah first little super
sill crossing seventy seven i
remember that storm yeah that
was the first really really
good you had some other fellow
south your lot of chasers in
and around with you i think
chris jackson i believe yeah
that's out footage of the of
the hail big yeah yeah yeah
so that's what we call kind
of a backyard chase that's
what sort of we try to do
when we have an option when it
started to create what we're
often yeah it's not too crazy
but then like you said you
branch out twenty twenty one
you're like okay i'm going
to alabama yeah which is sort
of the new tornado alley it's
where everything's happened
right right i imagine that was
a big only experience it was
and you know a lot of people
in the chasing community would
frown upon this mom a bit of a
loner when it comes to chasing
and it's good it is good to
have some money and you always
remember that when you meet
up with somebody but i went
out there by myself high risk
actually rented a car in a car
and very minimum experience
but just happened to be at the
right place and embedded in
between a bunch of convection
and storms and just happening
right there with a tornado
was and it wasn't your classic
rope in out tornado which the
deep self typically isn't like
that but you could you could
see it coming down in the
power flatches power flashes
which immediately told us that
okay that this things make in
contact and that was like wow
i'm actually saying it and that
was really awesome but add a
lot of really good chases in
twenty twenty one i would say
twenty twenty one was a was
a a year that i really just
went wild with it fully into
it not full time but yeah when
you yeah yeah do when you can
and then what was the blizzard
did you go to new jersey
and
so just so for emphasis in
this goes for you this goes
for air in this goes for
chris this goes for everyone
in the after i community when
there's a big day or here
yeah so we have i know you
have to reject unfortunately
i pay for it to because the
one reason we paid for the
new twitter subscription is
i have a chaser call of all
the carolina chasers so when
you will go out and we're like
busy working like right yeah
so like we remember the i feel
like we've been on the chase
with you what we have in up
but yeah the blizzard tell us
about that yeah twenty twenty
that was before obviously
twenty twenty one now that
was a learning experience to
when it was gotten brice i
see out there yeah he's kind
of from here but me and him
decide to go there and chase
this a week before christmas
and i was a big one or storm
and one of the biggest regrets
is not going to new york city
but covered but it would have
been really cool to see pretty
much a major snowstorm big city
around christmas time what we
decide to try to find a jack
pot region between it up and
scranton and they did not at
the jack pot they got a foot
a snow which was not a lot in
that storm it was a lot of work
yeah it was pretty cool but
just it was a cool experience
it really was just i've never
been that far north and i still
have never been that far more
sense it was really cool just
just being there in saying
that much no but i'm i'm so big
on just it is so much better
to see snow and your own back
your it just is not it is not
it the same yeah but it was
a fun experience it was and i
i try to be goofy in my storm
chasing i'm i'm i'm serious
when you need to be serious
but i i try to not joke around
but you know i'll make videos a
care occasionally and just kind
of loose enough attention and
that's just what this because
for for people like us it is
fun it's in this is no one in
rip in fifty miles per hour and
again like we always preface
you know we don't damage we
don't whatever we don't care
whether we want to see we
will see the wars that mother
nature can give us so yeah we
do get excited and get happy
and that you got on if you got
a passion for there's it you
know be careful more words here
but there there you're you're
definitely going to eat you
want to see the weather at it
yeah but that's awful totally
right there were the same
way it's not only tornadoes
and snow storms and blizzards
tropics were here at the end
of her can season right you've
had your fair share and the
tropics to walk is through
some of those chases yeah it
was my first long one that was
a ground high down louisiana
twenty twenty one i'll play
in that few days out but still
wish i would plan it better one
thing will be a storm chasing
side very quick side story is
i love someone chasing but i am
not so my that gets there two
days before and then lose and
leaves two days after yeah i
get there prompt one the last
storm chaser to get there and
i'm probably one the first ones
to get out i'm just ready to
get back to my family yeah but
that chase was a ground i left
the afternoon before the before
got away down there and i start
getting close to mobile and i
was like what am i doing i'm
alone i'm drive my mazda which
is my storm chasing vehicle
but and i might matter just
does not seem safe but i just
kept going to kept drop and i
got to louisiana got through
mississippi young louisiana
and i was like you're gonna do
this and i did i got south new
orleans and got down there in
the in the buy you and and when
all the way to home where they
were saying was gonna be under
feet of storm search and ended
up posting shop and tipido
to the louisiana cool place
awesome parking garage and me
and i got named josh griffith i
think is last name he's another
guy on the weather community
is awesome and ended up mean a
blessing in a scars i met him
down there because i was alone
yeah i may am down there and
me and him had a ball i mean
we're the only ones out there
in the park and lot light hold
non to still off i really get
in the full facts of this night
everybody else has no faster
buys doing the right thing to
be in safe but they're in the
parking garage just kind of
film and trying to stay dry i
mean him are the only ones in
fact i'm pretty sure some of
the storm chasers were filming
us just out in the element but
you know i drop all the way
down there i want to get some
cool footage you won't be what
i want to feel you want to
feel i want to fill in i'll be
awesome being out there in the
storm chasing you see a lot of
people who do that they're not
out in it which you know i'm
not trying to promote you know
lack of safety right but you
know when your energy junk if
your storm says and your storm
chase yeah yeah so yeah that
was a big one and then edalia
with the errand and and bry
stout was cool there's some
stories on that one so how
does that work with brice and
errand and you or even even the
chase is this a text week out
saying hey i think about going
out all right we're gonna take
team because i remember with
the value was in right they're
going down there we go yeah dad
was a crazy day day and a half
for you down there quick i was
up thirty eight hour straight
was rough yeah drove down there
last one to get there on the
same met errand and brice and
you know when you're just like
a set when you're with somebody
to energy build back on your
talking conversations keeping
the energy flowing and yeah
we wrote it out i think it was
that sounds like perry perry
gallash but wall we didn't stay
in perry we could have probably
could go some pretty crazy
you know footage that town
got wrecked button we ended up
making i would call the mistake
and say that we we wanted to
get the middle of the storm and
we did we saw it but if you all
remember that that hurricane
was weakening upon which is
good but cassell little brief
clearing and was awesome great
experience but the way back
remember you you want you
think there's bad pantries down
here down there man it is just
pot every trees a pantry so
actually had another storm
chaser reached out to me and
ask how is it down there and
i said you know it's closer
to the ocean and is like how's
the trees house you know i
guess the terrain site is like
is there a lot of poetries
and i'm like yeah there's a
lot of poetries okay any read
any school they just like all
right that's pretty much all i
need to know right what we're
worried about the pantries and
i didn't really think about
that much of the time but which
when when it was pulling out
and we pulled back out the road
to car to get back to period
oh man he had a truck i have
a mazda and i mean i was just
jagged i was making the most
of it now is just driving over
these pantries my maus and just
trying to get through it man
and and not over you know but
you you would have to drive
around and then here comes
another one you would think
during no way we're gonna get
past this we would get past
that and then there was one
and it was an aaron and bry
slight damage that man there's
no way we can get past that
and i'm like dude if we don't
get past this nobody's coming
to get us and i'll basically
look the damage said if i do
it we all do it and bry slow
damage like yeah so i drove
up i drove around bear feather
the gas got through it barely
tires locked on the pavement
and i'm on the road and
so i look at my mirrors and
i start looking bahaman yeah
i think during this entire
thing you get sixty eighty mile
power yeah and he got stuck
and i'll remember stop and
saying i mean i said like a
long thirty forty five second
prayer i was like lower please
get us out of this and i'll
promise what we will we will
scoot on back home and try to
shortness as much as possible
basically aaron hook some to
mob to my core man i would say
those are ten twenty percent
chances is gonna work to your
miser to mamas toyota and his
truck was like this i mean i
would say the water was almost
to his driver side door and i
was like man this there's no
way but we're gonna try to mean
why not shot he hooked some
up to i forgot what he hooked
it up to and then he obviously
hooked it up to the truck and
we tried it one or two toms
in the third time my tires
locked on the pavement and it
gave him just enough boost to
get out that hold i mean i'm
telling me they had to be less
than in my head percentage was
i would say it was a below a
twenty five percent chance of
this word it pulled him out we
made all the back home decide
to go to charleston then i
made back home but i mean that
rough from charleston back to
miles that was a brutal stretch
as those are the dangers of
storm chasing them when you're
when you're when you're born
out tired and especially
on the on the backside when
it's kind of over and that
adrenaline crashes yes when
it crashed it is like a dream
keeps you going to keep us
going here offering hurricane
eight days after yeah but man
when it crashes that next day
it's just it takes everything
out of your it doesn't it
it you know you think you
can get that energy back
by ten twelve hours a sleep
the man at lingers for four
five days yeah a big routine
oriented person so it was
over her game in player yeah
band but it takes you three
four five days a recover you
in in this in this real subtle
to a slight the things that
like when you get home when
you need to do a couple extra
things when you get home you
just find yourself you have
no energy to do it you're
still catching up mentally
physically so i call that the
tropical depression it's like
you're just you're just sort
of you're in a fog it because
for so long leading up to a
storm whether it's chasing or
whether it's covering this side
literally your life revolves
around that store it's even
when you're home you're looking
at models you're all the we're
texting each other making
plans doing this doing this
and it just consumes your live
there's no worse failing to
especially think of hurricane
season for us which is why i'm
glad this is the last day to
where we have like an end and
i don't know if you remember
him but we did the surveys
and all that may have we slept
for like one three hours yeah
were exhausted and then you
look at the new update from
the nhc thirty percent chance
of development okay let's
believe the breaks now i don't
need anything else but i can
imagine that for structures
and i would hate myself if
i did not bring up allendale
because i remember that yes
april yep that was apple fifth
yeah that was the eastern
outbreak day after eastern
wrong i think that was twenty
twenty yep you're right right
yeah so alan dale was that
an enhancers day dealt the
state i remember we were both
here the whole name was here
we were getting ready for a
severe weather threat are our
buddy match goes out and i did
not expect what was going to
happen that i knew we would
have storms yeah they nobody
did yeah right oklahoma like
outbreak that was crazy that
i would say that was my peak
chase you know when you i
kind of great things between
how forty at the draft yeah
what do you get and something
else bombs are the forget but
anyways how far do you have
the drive to get i guess before
you see action and and how much
and how much you spend i agree
that to that's like the third
how much do you have for yeah
yeah but you know i don't know
if you guys remember but the
worst that was supposed to be
in south georgia of course it
was really bad alabama south
georgia supposed to be bad
connect bumped up the enhanced
risk into our state and i got
all the way through a gustam
and i'm heads of south georgia
and i just get this feeling
light man i mean there's a
definition of a god feeling
it was this man just just had
bad south carolina kind of
cruise south carolina george
alan and that's what i did
you know and then i just what
stop occasionally look at the
extra bar model drum tibets
and it just for hours on and
kept showing a few super cells
popping up down there sure
enough one pop up right there
and got that that was that was
that one were always like okay
now the one alabama's tornado
but that was like wow there it
is yeah because you i'm kind
of driving forest trees and
then bang wide open opening
and the video doesn't do it
justice but that thing was it
was just there i was like wow
yeah and if i wouldn't got so
wrapped up in that moment i'm
probably gonna drove another
two minutes into allen dill
and actually saw that then
go right through town because
i was just there twenty five
minutes prior so i was kind of
just teetering figuring out the
storm but went on to jump on a
couple other storms saw another
tornado yeah i thought that was
going to be now that was that
you tell me moments and stone
chasing where you start to you
start to give you know that
energy the excitement kind of
turns into okay i need to re
evaluate where i'm at and make
sure i'm safe and i came up the
one the very last one i can't
remember where i was ended up
being like an e f two of one
but i thought a wage was about
to go right in front of me the
way that the radar looked but
turned out this very just rain
rap muffled and stuff but yeah
that was a wild day man didn't
have to draw for and yeah did
a lot of damage my favorite
chase of your works well
maybe not my favorite cycle
club was your one just a couple
weeks ago you and your daughter
go to the mountain for the
state the best and it looked
like you all just had the best
time one it was beautiful but
too that you were there with
your daughter just having the
best time and was awesome yet
that was great yeah i kind of
went up there and i thought it
was a chance to see some snow
the original plan was actually
mean my wife that next the
following friday was gonna do
like a day date and just go to
mountains cruise to park wave
but i text my ball somewhat
man there's an opportunity to
see two of my favorite things
fall foolish and snow thing to
i'm and i'm gonna try to make
this app and mount my job is
so cool they're interested in
and that's cool and went up
there went to waynesville north
carolina hot on the blue rich
parkway really close there and
ended up somewhere and area
the mountains are really been
rain turned the snow next thing
i know mass like an all snow
storm there so i'm wear from
man the the snowage is awesome
okay now in the winter like
another five hundred thousand
feet up and yeah you know it's
crazy when you see three four
inches a snow on the ground and
mid october i think anywhere
so it was awesome yeah always
great with the family tell my
big family persons a little
bit that's good to especially
in a weather driven passion
it is hard to do sometimes
i'm gonna ask you said works
great when it comes to work
when it comes to now people
know that you do this and your
forecasting in your videos
how many text you get now that
say hey manage i got a party
can you give me forecasts for
quick getting friends that
recharge you and say hey yeah
i do and it becomes a boring
com i'm sure i'm sure you guys
get that a ton also you know
you part of your wants to get
detailed with them but they'll
the most of you knows that
they they don't want all those
details they just want you
it's always gonna write yeah
which is pretty much anybody
yeah slight it's a little bit
horror new thing you know you
just could have them but you
know they and the day just
kind of show that up they went
that got filling all the time
twenty four seven any other
question you have from chase i
don't know i think we get the
street to breeze because that
always seems to pull out some
good stuff okay cool we have
some questions for you that
you were submitted we've been
teasing your episode for awhile
which is also i think there's
also a couple of questions for
jamie we can all tag school
okay well this is not about
you just second technically
could be though because yeah
since it's been mentioned now
what are your ideas for season
three of the podcasts that's
great we're in research and
development which means we have
no idea i feel like to and and
you can attest this it's like
a i think this like a college
football team or a an artist
going out to on the tour you
have that one date that you
circle and you look forward
to like this is the game like
south carolina you're not a
sports you know south carolina
circle the game it's kind of
what this episode was this was
like the blue print of i think
what i want season three to be
like organised more gas but let
me not wmbf guess yeah we had
we've done all the people here
will also like the internal
basically employed but i want
more of this because i know
there's people that have the
passion for form chasing yeah
unless we've done it but we
haven't done it as much as it's
not but and when i was doing
it as much as it technology has
changed yeah i remember having
to go to mcdonald's because
they didn't have the so you're
getting all free wifi you sweet
sweet young babies i'm talking
there is more before that
tell you about my first days
literally no internet nothing
all right do you know the am
radio trick you see either one
of you know that you talk about
travel radio trick no cool like
six eighty so i would sit at
home and would wait every ten
minutes to see whatever the
radar on the weather channel
would show because that was
it that was all you had that's
awful so you would have to
take that thirty seconds look
at whatever the weather on
the eighth radar showed look
outside look at the clouds
all right mad's about the area
i'm gonna go so you get on the
road store chasing your using
literally nothing but your eyes
in your knowledge of this guy
and am radio and here's a trick
that i still break out every
once a while if for some reason
you don't have your phone or no
internet connection you want to
know what a storms doing yeah
switch radio in your car with
a m go all the way down to the
lowest channel which i think
is like five thirty five forty
eight all right it's gonna be
static all you're gonna hear
static but when there are cloud
round lightning strikes there's
a quick pulse of static that
shows up and that's how you
could tell how much lightning
is in a storm so was you that
you would you also i would use
it as i would be chasing all
obviously if you're getting
constant pops of static on a
m radio you're like all right
the storm is is still really
cranking well you start losing
that lightning and like the
storm starting to weekend and
then usually sure enough you
could see that storms fall in
a part and that works within
about a fifty mile radius as
pretty cool that's old school
chasing your little babies
which season three i don't okay
but i'd like to get
photographer to photographers
because we got a lot of
target for yeah sure you know
my mouth just yet just yet
don't know what that means
i think this was technically
your question but i'll take
it youtube is a big platform
for are you cirrus how do
you see the future for whether
growing on places like youtube
instagram and tick top let's
ask our fellow youtuber are
you are you take talking i
am i don't think i'm only
one tickets i made one minute
clips but i haven't made one
sense he doubt yeah this is a
lot of people is a lot but you
know take sure you guys know
about tick targets not really
i'm on it but we don't well
as far as and i get a lot of
criticism and it should it's
it's kind of just like you
to you know things are hyped
up but you know you lose it
sometimes especially when it's
a local deal southeast deal
yeah and especially during
the winter time i love track
and when but youtube yeah i
think it's gonna do not them
but grow i really do and you
know there's going to be some
bad apple some good ones and
like everywhere yeah my thing
about tick talk is i feel like
and maybe i'm wrong because
you know i will sort of scroll
occasionally but i've never
posted anything i don't really
know that tick talkers are
audience am i wrong there see
that's where i struggle with i
feel like just in my head and
maybe again i'm wrong because
i know a lot of people don't
take talk i feel like it's
like seventeen year old girls
who were doing dances doing
dances do they really care
yeah i don't know i think that
opens up a good conversation of
like eventually they will be a
problem potentially they will
be but i don't i just don't
hear our problem it's here's
our inside for our viewers to
there's so much social media
now i don't want to add an hour
already being pushed to bore
in like social media fastens i
don't know then and we jumped
on threads because everyone's
like hey threats is great dead
awful it's happy about i'm
awful the two days i was on
threads like having to post
on both and everything it was
ridiculous like no thank god
that's that but yeah i don't i
mean i know you too is going to
be a big thing for us going for
it's kind of worth this special
we make a hundred books right
our checker during deposit but
i just don't know i feel like
it's easier for us to look at
people like match that say hey
he's having success on youtube
that's going to be a place that
we can grow yeah take talk i
don't see a bunch of that yet
yeah i can say tick dog i it
was a testing bang for me yeah
you know we january twenty
twenty two words is where my
youtube really popped off we
actually had no had wonder
whether threats that month but
i tested i tested it out and
i'll post it a couple things
and we had the really big
winner stormed caroline winner
storm it didn't you know give
down the gill got anything a
moral beach but was the one and
mid month january i think it
was three consecutive weekends
i believe with those things
that there when you all got in
some actions yeah one second
we got some freezing ring but
yeah so the the first one was a
big one and you know it's like
you know i'm not sure i thought
someone weather own here and
it did well did very well i
think now two hundred thousand
views on ticktop is not the
same as two hundred thousand
views on you to yeah you know
growth was a filitic talk is a
great platform to promote your
youtube on and that's what i
utilize to that i go make a
whole lot of money on six yeah
i think a million views on tick
talk like was thirty dollars
a year ago so million views
on you to you know it varies
you know could be a couple
thousand dollars i don't know
i i've never i've never had a
video of the million you sir
promoting are you cirrus
playlist michael our digital
guide you can start posting
some clips to take top
initially you do we need
to talk you don't we're not
we're not doing it all i used
to talk for the horribly and
sensitive means that people
send me other friends i mean
that's that's kind of that's
kind of a lot to keep my
extend but you don't a great
job with it so yeah i don't
know what the future looks
like but hopefully youtube is
a good successful plate we're
definitely not you lose used
leaving easy for me to say
leaving you to now we can't not
what the success that we've had
this is a mint west question
it is funny because we've been
talking about how mentioned i
do want to say erin sick yep
we were supposed to bring on
here and aaron we're going to
get you on for season three
you let us know when you come
down why what are some tips
you have for someone wanting
to get into storm chasing
what's the best way to start
this is gonna sound
really generic but just
do it yeah you know
that's what i did that's not
going to be a helpful tip
but you know i think that
fear holds some people back
and i'm not saying that's
the case for that specific
person but i think not just
was stone chasing but with
a lot of things people think
that only certain people can
do it and that's not true you
know it's not true at all and
anybody can do it you know i
would not it would be to start
local yeah yeah start local i
mean i would even say just your
your county yeah chase some
summer storms and then you know
we all always get at least one
tropical that threat it seems
like a year you know maybe drop
around out and that check that
out and i mean that's how i
started started local and then
maybe i don't know try to get
maybe draw to a slight risk you
know don't don't don't go right
into a high risk this kind of
scout what i did but maybe draw
to a slider enhanced risk maybe
in georgia you know check that
out and but as far as what you
need you know i would certainly
have a reliable corn and not
everybody's blessed i have a
second corn but i'm lucky to be
able to right now it's down you
jagged it up but but i'm lucky
to drive my wife's high school
mazda and that that has been
a trooper cora when it when i
saw obviously what i did need
it was amazing but anyway yes
start local that's what i would
say yeah and and like you were
saying starting local which is
one of the first things i was
gonna say then have to be a big
severe storm a lot of times you
know because like we said we
can't chase much at all because
you know if it's bad enough to
chase locally it means we're
going to be here right but the
summer afternoon if there's a
saturday afternoon in a good
look and see brief storm pops
up i'll go out there and just
hang out with the figure you
know go in it hang out just
outside of it worry and learn
the structure learn clouds and
i think one of the one of the
great things to especially for
people who may be don't have a
lot of in depth meteor logical
knowledge you don't need it
take a scotland class that
the national weather service
offers one you'll learn a lot
into if you become sky warned
certified then you can also
kind of help out the national
weather service and you're not
just out there for the heck of
it if you see hale if you see
strong winds you can call up
the national weather service
and report that and if your sky
warn certified that means it's
there's a lot more credibility
behind it yeah so you're you're
doing a public service you're
also out there sort of helping
yourself and then just watch
you know watch mitch watch
videos one of my favorite
things to do when quiet night
is watch storm placing videos
just see how what's done and
and like you said just you got
to do it yeah ask questions
as well yeah now there will
be some chasers and i'm going
to name names that probably
won't answer your questions
but ask you're not gonna know
anything until you ask if you
have questions you can send us
a message would be glad to help
out anyway began don't forget
to to take your photos and send
a more way to because we're
going to use them and like make
money off of them but i would
love to promote if you're out
there doing something hey check
out this local strong chaser
you could get more from them
it's never about us making
money off of someone else's
photos which always yeah but
also keep your expectations low
yeah yeah because all of the
great video that shows up of
a tornado when alan day old or
whatever there is the thirteen
hours of driving there is all
of the chases i can go into
another way where you don't
see anything where you don't
see anything even you know i've
chased out tornado alley you
know you're out there for i was
out there for two weeks in grad
school and we had storms on
three days the rest of the time
you're driving in the dusty
pulling us look at hard for me
these chase cations man all the
storm chasers to do that then
you know there's a good chance
you go hit something that may
i i plan i'm not planning like
the reform once in advance
your brother for two weeks and
yeah it does yeah i mean if i
got a lot of money to below i
guess but i got a lot money to
blow i feel like the way you're
doing it is a very effective
way a lot of people to go out
there in april may and they
said right this is my two weeks
will see what happens i don't
know i get a little worried
about that because what happens
if you get a reaction now
good luck that said i'm kind
of planning on it well good
luck next april because you
know we're going down for the
hurricane conference in south
texas in april then three days
later is the total eclipse so
i'm doing in clips vacation
because that's where i'd always
want to see another total
eclipse everyone here and
then after the clips in texas
a couple extra days just to
see never know if i can get
into something now i doubt
that i look at my my look
it'll probably be a you know
ongoing drought that we up
but you know it's just it's
everything is just lining
up where i'm like yeah you
know what i'm gonna give it
a try it's been a long time
chased out there so yeah for
sure your turn is my turning
we're coming to an add on
season to are there any
episodes you wish you would
have gone longer on what
five episodes would you
recommend to someone wanting
to go back and watch the
podcast wow wow this is
the first season felt rushed
yeah but not because we planned
it that way i just don't think
we expect if it did be right
like i knew you and i love
weather like we could bring
anybody on who loves whether
it talk but some of those first
services were like twenty five
minutes yeah yeah that's not
i feel bad about those but it
was a start five ever since you
would recommend seriously gonna
snow love it winner weather
you said it does so well hugo
did you go epside i feel like
we could just go on on and we
could win three hours on you
yeah i really do believe that
the the tropical episode we
got home home stuff like we
could have went for another
two hours yeah trying to think
what else if you're looking for
something fun i feel like we
probably could have gone all
day with more and you know sure
i've never tell her that person
but one of my top favorite
episodes that was good but if
that was once he was done he
was done you know yeah yeah i
listen to your all zone gill
starts on this one or and i
was listening to it just blown
the leaves out the backyard
and always always really won't
you ought to go longer i was
only all the just getting heard
out on the on the predictions
but it was always that was a
great episode thank you let
me ask you this then we'll put
you and if you listen to that
episode first accumulating snow
and charlotte you have a date
just i want to go i'm
gonna go late january
that's it let's not seen the
pattern yeah and i know that
so like standard but that's
when i'm gonna go you know i
made a bold prediction several
months ago twitter i was that
we're gonna have a major winter
storm in the carolina december
i didn't say where but but it
was more so because i wanted
to get it and but man it's
hard saying that but i'm kinda
while we're here on the topic
you can go back no no i think
what i say january seventeenth
i think was my prediction i'm
still happy with kind of what
we're thinking for the winner
more nervous about december
yeah i think i think it may
take a while for us to kind
of get into the end of the
cold just kind of what i'm
seeing long range we made may
have to wait a little while
to a lot of people definitely
think it's gonna be warm to
yeah maybe maybe once pass
christmas course everything
come crashing down so that you
know it's just just there's
some hints out there that you
know december may end up a
little bit yeah i think you
were january seventeenth and
then i was like the twelve yeah
december could be a little fun
severe weather set up in the
southeast yeah things gonna
write a lot yeah so which
would desperately need more
one more all right i think we
gave up so it's if not get it
all this is good can you give
me a time where you had your
biggest failure in the business
what was it and how did you
grow from it i'm going to add
this to mitch do a special
storm chasing your strong
chasing will let you go first
if you know it out the top
as i think of my answer
let this spring and the spring
before no no never mind it just
came to my head man i forgot
what i felt like it was like
the name off frozen what was
the her also else was not the
one the fill apart light like
it was looking good got to a
category one and then employed
basically no because also held
together pretty good when it
came up through here because we
had some man we had some stuff
a warning and it was in july it
was in july twenty twenty one
it was else a tropical storm
moving through the carolina
yeah and in it strengthened
and to hurricane briefly look
like one of those classic
systems that's what it's
going to strengthen upon land
more so i made a spontaneous
decision i would you know
think about all day also you
know what i'm on the drive on
the drop all the way down the
table check the cell brutal
draft and i'm i'll add there's
no there's no acm on also
margaret in that way yeah i
had a dear and never came back
yes so that just made this
entire episode yeah flake
florida in july you guys
know and there is nothing
more humid than okay
so i got down there price was
down there but you know i'm a
him made for an hour and this
thing just and in it and what
stock is it was around gains
will you could see this thing
just like on this deep in the
florida and i'm just basically
drove down from a recital is
like no i'm gonna commit to
this when all the way down the
clear water film what i could
i basically drove all the way
i left at two pm in columbia
drove all the way to clear
water florida drove around
watch some twenty five thirty
five mile per win gus and i i
barely got on my car and then
i just drove all the way back i
stopped it a rest stop for two
hours and dumb other they drove
all the way back and i was back
in columbia ball light lunch
tom the next day and that was
a ground and just a complete
failure and i had a lot of had
a lot of bad chases this spring
but it was good because the
the these these threats did
not materialize there was a lot
of enhance and moderate that
luckily did not material oz as
passed bring and i chased just
about every single one that
didn't and those were some hard
chases but it was good it was
good you know you can't draw
back in the shace as like you
know what waste of money but
you know you're not going to
hit every single time you're
not in there when your passion
and that's also the reality
of storm fixing like we were
just saying you for everyone
you hit we will be a lot to
miss you know yeah biggest
failure we're not single now
just in the business we're not
gonna talk about the snowstorm
again another one all man we're
talking about twitter while
ago yeah the january failure
yeah that was on a couple of
previous we should we can do
a whole podcast on that day
or another big mess to this
day and this is this isn't
great and it's you know gotten
compared to your storm chasing
stories but we had i think it
was two years ago i think it
was twenty twenty maybe twenty
twenty one we had a couple
of massive hail storms moved
through orient county and i
just happened to be off that
day was on a friday and as i
can't want to get out and chase
and when i tell you we had hale
sorbs you know we don't usually
get big hails to one throughout
here we had a storm go through
northern orientally those drop
in base and i love hail i'm
like if i'm tasting i'm trying
to get into the big hail i want
to see the big hail i don't
care about macar that's why i
have insurance i want to see
the big hail so this storm was
dropping baseballs and between
conway and aner and i was like
right on its tail and i made
one wrong turn and missed that
hail core by literally probably
two minutes and when i finally
got sort of corrected back on
where i needed to be the road
that i was driving on somewhere
out in or counting the sun
was out and there was baseball
size hail just laying on the
ground every like and i missed
it by just that much in around
here a lot of times you know
storms remove fast the roads
are like this and it's it's
tough to catch up with a storm
right that's all in it fifty
miles an hour you just if you
don't get that intercept it's
hard to catch up so i knew
i had lost my opportunity to
man seen that big hail sit on
the ground that was a tough
one my biggest mistake and
we've mentioned this before i
remember at least mentioned in
the theme of it had family in
town this was back when i was
an eastern attacking family
want to go out to eat i had
to pick up a weekend shift i
was the chief at the time pick
up a weekend for some of the
resolve sent no worries you
know quite a day whatever it'll
be what it is it's august your
july i just remember super hot
superhuman radars clean get
done six thirty show all right
call on each other restaurant
drive twenty minutes across
town and i'll remember how
okay cool this is gonna be
nice evening saturday night you
know go i'll come back for the
eleven get a phone call from
my news director and i'll get
to it and second family all
sudden like facebook starts
a bloke and i see like live
stream severe storm damn one
store blew up around eight pm
right before sunset micro burst
through a small town trees down
houses destroyed drop four and
half inches of eight just set
and i'm and dinner and i will
never forget seeing the second
phone call come in the phone
call it's gonna be bad and i
said let me get this and then
not he said i would need you to
come in i remember looking at
right or and i was like what is
happened because by the time i
got the restaurant ordered my
food i didn't get to eat that
it went to like a river senate
reporters out there this is
and i will never ever ever if
there is a small chance of the
storm and i think it's severe
i miss still traumatized by
it even if we're doing weak
invillance i will never fall
asleep i will never go out
plant if i will make sure i can
get to the station as quick as
possible to my very very learn
once my very very early days
here was similar i was working
weekends did the six pm show
nothing on radar everything
was fine at the time i live in
surfside you know from from our
station in the hard moral beach
all way down surfside beijings
it's a hall fundamental home
have some dinner overall
back in nine o'clock really
you know got home fixed
my plate tornado warning
one store popped up in
darlington county dropped a
tornado man i have never gone
so fast up highly seventeen
and i mean it will be in any
of two crazy video but yeah
there's no well i've had a
twenty or ten those mess with
for sure crazy that we've been
talking for an hour now already
yeah i feel like we need to at
least start to wrap up first
on ask mention what's what's
next for mitch west weather
any big plans in the horizon
other than tracking snowstorms
hopefully finger scroll
carolina yeah of course i'm
i'm open for a big winner i
think we all are yeah hoping
for a big one or even if
it's just one storm last one
it was was tough i mean i
love talking whether about
anywhere but of course you're
breaking out a winter storm
but net and your you know
in your backyard it's it's
a whole different story but
hoping for the success of the
winner my wife is actually
in school to be an elementary
school teacher okay so youtube
which was kind of on hobby
thing is actually replaced
it's kind of like the second
income now that yeah you know
because she had a quicker job
to finish school so definitely
hoping for a successful winner
when our weather hope and
know for no severe weather
outbreaks or anything like
that but the future is just
continue to get the growth and
eventually you know god will
if that's the plan hopefully
make doing when i do full time
on down the road but not but
that's all yeah down the road
that you know life comes fast
ever now you're headed in the
right direction yeah that for
matres for all of the your
socials you're you to work in
people go i want to make sure
we plug that yeah youtubes
mitch west weather inside
that and should come up yeah
twitter believe it's at s c
weather underscore w because a
start off think of the system
i think that's why i started
was i think that's what i was
called and i have facebook
to mitch was weather yeah but
definitely the most active on
twitter or x and you too so
and i will say if you ever want
to dive into like the native
renew details your videos do a
great job at that third twenty
to thirty sometimes longer and
they get one of regions they go
into the jet stream step that
we've talked about here that
you all can get on his channel
one to make sure we say that
also make sure we say that
next week it's the big week
is the big week so lombardos
if you haven't reservations
call the holing up quick yeah
yeah if if they say they're
full or whatever maybe should
it message yeah we'll try to
figure we can pull some strings
or whatever but really getting
excited for that again if you
have pictures of the nineteen
eighty nine snowstorm one we'd
love to see those it's gonna be
kind of feel like we got cover
a little weather that pod can
scott tales so we'll talk a
little bit about that but still
really looking forward to that
that's gonna be fun save all
your questions for shooting the
breeze in person we're gonna do
that there next week so we'll
bring out a mag pass around
if you can't make it we hate
it but we will also be live
streaming yeah so you can still
have someone in there asking
questions and answering those
i'm trying to think of anything
else and then we'll break
for the holidays celebrate
three we don't really have a
return date yeah we don't and
january i would say january
and and really going to push
maybe it i've heard a new look
yeah i heard that yesterday
maybe a new look i don't know
if you've noticed we actually
have like a new logo move a
book no that's about all we
can afford with our seventy six
hundred
slightly just called remote
here i'm also definitely maybe
need some new furniture we can
ask for that okay big stuff
coming for twenty twenty four
we'll talk about that season
three he just dropped a big
yeah big talk about that mitch
thank you so much yeah thank
you making the truth here
and yeah it's been fun yeah
anything we can do for you for
me stranger yep you know that
british over much that does it
for episode thirty thirty three
three offer we'll see you all
for the live episode thirty
four next week thanks all
