Welcome to all, as we delve into a pearl of wisdom from the Ethics of our Fathers. Today, we focus on Chapter 1, Mishna 18. It says, "Rabbi Shimon, the son of Gamliel, would say: By three things is the world sustained: law, truth, and peace."
Law, truth, and peace - three pillars that hold up our world. To understand their significance, let's bring them into our everyday life.
Law, or 'din', guides our actions, it gives us structure. Whether it's traffic laws, laws of a game, or the laws of nature, without law, chaos ensues. It’s our moral compass, guiding us to act ethically and justly.
Next, truth, or 'emet'. Truth is the bedrock of all relationships. When we deal truthfully, we cultivate trust. Our words carry weight, and our actions reflect our integrity. In a world where misinformation is rampant, commitment to truth is paramount.
Peace, 'shalom', is the outcome of law and truth. When justice prevails and truth is upheld, peace naturally follows. It's what we strive for in our homes, in our communities, and in our world.
As we navigate our daily lives, let's remember Rabbi Shimon's words. Uphold the law, speak the truth, and strive for peace - and in doing so, we sustain our world.
