Capital Chat

On this episode of Capital Chat, Cliff Dumas speaks with Vienna from Into Alaska about one of Juneau’s most unusual local adventure companies. Vienna shares how the business grew from its hot tub boat and self-drive “go boats” to a newly launched crabbing experience inspired by years of taking friends and family out on the water. They also discuss the strong response from locals, the company’s first full summer season, and how Into Alaska is creating new ways for residents and visitors to experience Juneau from the water.

Speaker 1:

Joining me from Into Alaska is Vienna. Good to see you again. Thanks for coming in this morning.

Speaker 2:

Thanks for having me. Excited to be here.

Speaker 1:

Cool. For folks that, are not aware of who you guys are and what you do, by the way, I love it, Describe the events and the tour that people can take with your company.

Speaker 2:

Yes. So we started with our hot tub boat first, and that one we offer either going into the channel or dockside. We have projector. You can watch a movie. It's super fun.

Speaker 2:

We also have go boats. They're kind of like little floating donuts that you drive around on the lake and things like that. It's also really fun. And then we also just added our crabbing tour. So we're really, really excited to be launching that.

Speaker 1:

Oh, tell me about that. That sounds fun. Okay. First of all, are you crabbing in a hot tub?

Speaker 2:

No. Oh my gosh. No. Okay. Different boats.

Speaker 2:

All different boats. Okay.

Speaker 1:

So what's the process there?

Speaker 2:

So the crabbing is something we're really excited about. My co owner grew up in Juneau and has been crabbing since she was probably too young to be driving the boat.

Speaker 1:

And Yeah.

Speaker 2:

Maybe I shouldn't admit that. But every time people came to visit, we would take them. And it's something that we do with our friends and family and people we love and really gives us a little bit of, you know, that real Juno feeling. So being able to take other people out and see them smile, have a lot of fun doing it, it's been really enjoyable.

Speaker 1:

So how's the season been so far? This is your first season. Right?

Speaker 2:

Yeah. So we did start the hot tub boat last year as well as the go boats, but just through the fall and the winter, so locals had a chance to try it out first.

Speaker 1:

Wow.

Speaker 2:

We've actually had so much positive response, especially with locals, and it's been a really, really nice thing. I think that, you know, we didn't expect it to be, you know, all the different things that come up, you know, like, we've had so many positive people coming to us and just saying how much they love that we brought something for locals to do, and that was our goal. So I think it's been a really it's been a great season, but it's also been really fulfilling in a lot of ways.

Speaker 1:

Yeah. And we're we're in that, you know, August is typically maybe where a little bit of fatigue kick kicks in for the service industry, because let's face it. We're we're dealing with three to six ships or five ships that I can't I've lost count. But I I mean, there's a lot of people coming through, which is great for business and terrific for you guys. How has it been so far keeping the momentum up and the spirit up for the staff and stuff?

Speaker 1:

Because it it must be thrilling seeing how much fun that people are having in a hot tub, in a boat, floating around whatever, part of town they actually happen to be in.

Speaker 2:

Yeah. Honestly, I mean, I guess you'd have to ask them. But but from what I see, we've just been having so much fun. You know, we have all these meetings and brainstorming and it's it's fun to be able to have that creativity, especially so early on. We try to keep our employees really involved in everything and allow them to share all their feedback because they're the ones who spend a lot of times with customers, probably even more than we do.

Speaker 2:

And so it's been really cool to just hear these different ideas, and our social media has been a really fun place for us to sort of have that creative outlet.

Speaker 1:

Yeah. So how many people can fit in a hot tub, and what's the the the basic cost to do it?

Speaker 2:

Six people in the hot tub boat, 400 if you wanna go into the channel, 200 if you wanna say dockside, and it's an hour and a half tour.

Speaker 1:

Oh, fun. Yeah. And and you're driving yourself. Right?

Speaker 2:

You are. Yes. Okay. It's really easy.

Speaker 1:

And how do folks get ahold of you?

Speaker 2:

You can go on our website, intoak.com. You can call me, (716) 238-0554. You could text me. That's even better than calling. Yeah.

Speaker 2:

Or you can email us at info@Intoak.com.

Speaker 1:

And when does the, the the the crab component of this kick in?

Speaker 2:

We just launched.

Speaker 1:

Okay. And if, folks are are interested in that, what's the people? What's the cost?

Speaker 2:

It is call to book only right now, and we're doing a little bit of, special pricing with private groups. So we haven't publicly announced what that pricing is. But if you call, we'll we're more than happy to tell you and get you booked.

Speaker 1:
