Welcome to the Astro Minute! I'm Lauren Smyth, and with the help of astronomer and teacher Kelli Smyth, I'll be your tour guide as we explore the secrets of the night sky sixty seconds at a time.
Welcome to the Astro minute, where we’re exploring the universe sixty seconds at a time. I’m Lauren Smyth and today we’re excited about a month of meteors!
Each year, while planet earth illuminates Christmas lights, major meteor showers illuminate the November night sky. In twenty-twenty-three, three showers will fill the month. First come the Taurids, streaming from the direction of Taurus in the south and east, peaking November twelfth. Next are the spectacular Leonids, appearing from the direction of Leo in the north and east, peaking November eighteenth. And the finale: a second Orionids, radiating from the direction of Orion in the south and east, and peaking November twenty-eighth.
Remember, meteors can be seen weeks before and after peak dates, so on any clear November night, bundle up and scan the sky for these dazzling astronomical lights!
That’s your Astro Minute!
