Volume 5
Immerse: Poets is the fifth of six volumes of the Immerse: The Bible Reading Experience. Poets presents the poetical books of the First Testament in two groupings, dividing the books between songbooks (Psalms, Lamentations, Song of Songs) and wisdom writings (Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Job). These writings all reflect the daily, down-to-earth faith of God’s people as they live out their covenant relationship with him in worship and wise living.

4 Questions to get your conversations started:
1. What stood out to you this week?
2. Was there anything confusing or troubling?
3. Did anything make you think differently about God?
4. How might this change the way we live?

QUICK START GUIDE
3 ways to get the most out of your experience
  1. Use Immerse: Beginnings instead of your regular chapter and verse Bible. This special reader’s edition restores the Bible to its natural simplicity and beauty by removing chapter and verse numbers and other historical additions. Letters look like letters, songs look like songs, and the original literary structures are visible in each book.
  2. Commit to making this a community experience. Immerse is designed for groups to encounter large portions of the Bible together
for 8 weeks–more like a book club, less like a Bible study. By meeting every week in small groups and discussing what you read in open,
honest conversations, you and your community can come together to be transformed through an authentic experience with the Scriptures.
  3. Aim to understand the big story. Read through “The Stories and the Story” (p. 483) to see how the books of the Bible work together to tell God’s story of his creation’s restoration. As you read through Immerse: Beginnings, rather than ask, “How do I fit God into my busy life?” begin asking, “How can I join in God’s great plan by living out my part in his story?”

Henry: Welcome To Immerse: The
Daily Bible Reading Experience.

Day two hundred and eighty 8.

Psalm 26.

A Psalm of David declare me innocent, oh
Lord, for I have acted with integrity,

I have trusted in the Lord without
wavering, put me on trial, Lord, and cross

examine me, test my motives and my heart.

For, I am always aware of your
unfailing love, and I have

lived according to your truth.

I do not spend time with liars
or go along with hypocrites.

I hate the gatherings of those
who do evil, and I refuse

to join in with the wicked.

I wash my hands to declare my innocence.

I come to your altar, oh Lord,
singing a song of Thanksgiving

and telling of all your wonders.

I love your sanctuary, Lord.

The place where your
glorious presence dwells.

Don't let me suffer.

The fate of sinners don't condemn me along
with murderers, their hands are dirty

with evil schemes and they constantly
take bribes, but I am not like that.

I live with integrity, so
redeem me and show me mercy.

Now I stand on solid ground and
I will publicly praise the Lord.

Psalm 27, a Psalm of David, the
Lord is my light and my salvation.

So why should I be afraid?

The Lord is my fortress
protecting me from danger.

So why should I tremble when
evil people come to devour me?

When my enemies and foes attack
me, they will stumble and fall.

Though a mighty army surrounds
me, my heart will not be afraid.

Even if I am attacked,
I will remain confident.

The one thing I ask of the Lord, the
thing I seek most is to live in the house

of the Lord all the days of my life,
delighting in the Lord's perfections

and meditating in his temple for he will
conceal me there when troubles come.

He will hide me in his sanctuary.

He will place me out of
reach on a high rock.

Then I will hold my head high above my
enemies who surround me at his sanctuary.

I will offer sacrifices with
shouts of joy, singing and

praising the Lord with music.

Hear me as I pray.

Oh Lord, be merciful and answer me.

My heart has heard you say, come and
talk with me, and my heart responds.

Lord, I am coming.

Do not turn your back on me.

Do not reject your servant in anger.

You have always been my helper.

Don't leave me now.

Don't abandon me, oh God, of my salvation.

Even if my father and mother abandoned
me, the Lord will hold me close.

Teach me how to live, oh Lord,
lead me along the right path for

my enemies are waiting for me.

Do not let me fall into their hands.

For they accuse me of
things I've never done.

With every breath they
threaten me with violence.

Yet I am confident I will see
the lord's goodness while I am

here in the land of the living.

Wait patiently for the Lord.

Be brave and courageous.

Yes.

Wait patiently for the Lord.

Psalm 28, A Psalm of David.

I pray to you oh Lord, my rock.

Do not turn a deaf ear to
me for if you are silent.

I might as well give up and die.

Listen to my prayer for mercy
as I cry out to you for help.

As I lift my hands toward your holy
sanctuary, do not drag me away with the

wicked, with those who do evil, those who
speak friendly words to their neighbors

while planning evil in their hearts.

Give them the punishment
they so richly deserve.

Measure it out in proportion
to their wickedness.

Pay them back for all their evil deeds.

Give them a taste of what
they have done to others.

They care nothing for what the Lord has
done or for what his hands have made.

So he will tear them down and
they will never be rebuilt.

Praise the Lord for He has
heard my cry for mercy.

The Lord is my strength and shield.

I trust him with all my heart.

He helps me and my heart
is filled with joy.

I burst out in songs of Thanksgiving.

The Lord gives his people strength.

He is a safe fortress
for his anointed king.

Save your people.

Bless Israel, your special possession.

Lead them like a shepherd and
carry them in your arms forever.

Psalm 29.

Psalm of David, honor the Lord.

You heavenly beings honor the
Lord for his glory and strength.

Honor the Lord for the glory of his name.

Worship the Lord in the
splendor of his holiness.

The voice of the Lord
echoes above the sea.

The God of glory thunders the
Lord thunders over the mighty sea.

The voice of the Lord is powerful.

The voice of the Lord is majestic.

The voice of the Lord
splits the mighty cedars.

The Lord shatters the cedars of Lebanon.

He makes Lebanon's
mountains skip like a calf.

He makes Mount Herman
leap like a young wild ox.

The voice of the Lord strikes
with bolts of lightning.

The voice of the Lord makes
the barren wilderness quake.

The Lord shakes the wilderness of Kaddish.

The voice of the Lord twists
mighty oaks and strips the

forest's bear in his temple.

Everyone shouts Glory.

The Lord rules over the floodwaters.

The Lord reigns as king forever.

The Lord gives his people strength.

The Lord blesses them with peace.

Psalm 30 a Psalm of David, a song
for the dedication of the temple.

I will exalt you Lord, for you rescued me.

You refused to let my
enemies triumph over me.

Oh Lord, my God.

I cried to you for help
and you restored my health.

You brought me up from the
grave, oh Lord, you kept me from

falling into the pit of death.

Sing to the Lord all you godly ones.

Praise His holy name for his anger.

Lasts only a moment, but
his favor lasts a lifetime.

Weeping may last through the night,
but joy comes with the morning.

When I was prosperous, I
said, nothing can stop me now.

Your favor.

Oh Lord.

Made me as secure as a mountain.

Then you turned away from
me and I was shattered.

I cried out to you.

Oh Lord.

I begged the Lord for mercy,
saying, what will you gain if I die?

If I sink into the grave,
can my dust praise you?

Can it tell of your faithfulness?

Hear me Lord, and have mercy on me.

Help me.

Oh Lord.

You have turned my mourning
into joyful dancing.

You have taken away my clothes of mourning
and clothed me with joy that I might

sing praises to you and not be silent.

Oh Lord, my God.

I will give you thanks forever.

Psalm 31 for the choir
director, a Psalm of David.

Oh Lord.

I have come to you for protection.

Don't let me be disgraced.

Save me for you.

Do what is right.

Turn your ears who listen
to me, rescue me quickly.

Be my rock of protection, a
fortress where I will be safe.

You are my rock and my fortress.

For the honor of your name,
lead me out of this danger.

Pull me from the trap.

My enemies set for me.

For I find protection in you alone.

I entrust my spirit into your hand.

Rescue me Lord, for
you are a faithful God.

I hate those who worship worthless idols.

I trust in the Lord.

I will be glad and rejoice
in your unfailing love.

For you have seen my troubles and you
care about the anguish of my soul.

You have not handed me over to my
enemies, but have set me in a safe place.

Have mercy on me, Lord, for I am
in distress, tears blur my eyes.

My body and soul are withering away.

I am dying from grief.

My years are shortened by sadness.

Sin has drained my strength.

I am wasting away from within.

I am scorned by all my enemies
and despised by my neighbors.

Even my friends are
afraid to come near me.

When they see me on the
street, they run the other way.

I am ignored as if I were dead,
as if I were a broken pot.

I have heard the many rumors about
me, and I am surrounded by terror.

My enemies conspire against me plotting
to take my life, but I am trusting

you, oh Lord, saying you are my God.

My future is in your hands.

Rescue me from those who
hunt me down relentlessly.

Let your favor shine on your
servant in your unfailing love.

Rescue me.

Don't let me be disgraced, oh Lord.

For I call out to you for help.

Let the wicked be disgraced.

Let them lie silent in the grave.

Silence their lying lips, those proud
and arrogant lips that accuse the Godly.

How great is the goodness you have stored
up for those who fear you, you lavish it

on those who come to you for protection,
blessing them before the watching world.

You hide them in the shelter
of your presence, safe from

those who conspire against them.

You shelter them in your presence.

Far from accusing tongues.

Praise the Lord.

For, he has shown me the
wonders of his unfailing love.

He kept me safe.

When my city was under
attack in panic, I cried out.

I am cut off from the Lord.

But you heard my cry for mercy
and answered my call for help.

Love the Lord.

All you godly ones for the Lord
protects those who are loyal to him,

but he harshly punishes the arrogant.

So be strong and courageous.

All you who put your hope in the Lord.

Psalm 32.

A Psalm of David.

Oh, what joy for those whose
disobedience is forgiven,

whose sin is put out of sight?

Yes.

What joy for those whose record the
Lord has cleared of guilt, whose

lives are lived in complete honesty.

When I refused to confess my
sin, my body wasted away, and I

groaned all day long day and night.

Your hand of discipline was heavy on me.

My strength evaporated like water
in the summer, heat interlude.

Finally, I confessed all my sins to you
and stopped trying to hide my guilt.

I said to myself, I will confess my
rebellion to the Lord and you forgave me.

All my guilt is gone interlude.

Therefore, let all the godly pray to
you while there is still time that they

may not drown in the floodwaters of
judgment for you are my hiding place.

You protect me from trouble.

You surround me with songs of
victory interlude the Lord says.

I will guide you along the
best pathway for your life.

I will advise you and watch over you.

Do not be like a senseless horse
or mule that needs a bit and

bridle to keep it under control.

Many sorrows come to the wicked,
but unfailing love surrounds

those who trust the Lord.

So rejoice in the Lord and
be glad all you who obey him.

Shout for joy.

All you whose hearts are pure.

Psalm 33, let the Godly
sing for joy to the Lord.

It is fitting for the pure to praise him.

Praise the Lord.

With melodies on the liar.

Make music for him on
the 10 stringed harp.

Sing a new song of praise to him.

Play skillfully on the
harp and sing with joy.

For the word of the Lord holds true
and we can trust everything he does.

He loves whatever is just and good.

The unfailing love of
the Lord fills the earth.

The Lord merely spoke and
the heavens were created.

He breathed the word and
all the stars were born.

He assigned the sea its boundaries and
locked the oceans in vast reservoirs.

Let the whole world fear the Lord
and let everyone stand in awe of him

for when he spoke, the world began.

It appeared at his command.

The Lord frustrates the plans of the
nations and thwarts all their schemes,

but the Lord's plans stand firm forever.

His intentions can never be shaken.

What joy for the nation, whose
God is the Lord, whose people he

has chosen as his inheritance?

The Lord looks down from heaven and sees
the whole human race from his throne.

He observes all who live on the earth.

He made their hearts so he
understands everything they do.

The best equipped army cannot
save a king, nor is great

strength enough to save a warrior.

Don't count on your war horse to give
you victory for all its strength.

It cannot save you.

But the Lord watches
over those who fear him.

Those who rely on his unfailing
love, he rescues them from death and

keeps them alive in times of famine.

We put our hope in the Lord.

He is our help and our shield in Him.

Our heart's rejoice for
we trust in his holy name.

Let your unfailing love surround us
Lord, for our hope is in you alone.

Psalm 34, A Psalm of David regarding
the time he pretended to be insane in

front of ab Bialek who sent him away.

I will praise the Lord at all times.

I will constantly speak his praises.

I will boast only in the Lord.

Let all who are helpless take heart.

Come let us tell of the Lord's greatness.

Let us exalt his name together.

I prayed to the Lord and he answered me.

He freed me from all my fears.

Those who look to him for
help will be radiant with joy.

No shadow of shame will
darken their faces.

In my desperation, I prayed
and the Lord listened.

He saved me from all my troubles.

For the angel of the Lord is a guard.

He surrounds and defends all who fear him.

Taste and see that the Lord is good.

Oh, the joys of those who take
refuge in him fear the Lord.

You, his godly people for those who
fear him, will have all they need.

Even strong young lions sometimes
go hungry, but those who trust in

the Lord will lack no good thing.

Come my children and listen to me,
and I will teach you to fear the Lord.

Does anyone want to live a life
that is long and prosperous?

Then keep your tongue from speaking
evil and your lips from telling lies.

Turn away from evil and do good.

Search for peace and work to maintain it.

The eyes of the Lord watch over those
who do right, his ears are open to

their cries for help, but the Lord turns
his face against those who do evil.

He will erase their memory from the earth.

The Lord hears his people when
they call to him for help.

He rescues them from all their troubles.

The Lord is close to the broken-hearted.

He rescues those whose
spirits are crushed.

The righteous person faces
many troubles, but the Lord

comes to the rescue each time.

For the Lord protects the
bones of the righteous.

Not one of them is broken.

Calamity will surely destroy the
wicked and those who hate the

righteous will be punished, but the
Lord will redeem those who serve him.

No one who takes refuge
in him will be condemned.
