Welcome to today's podcast.
In the Shabbat portion, we explore a moment of forewarning and humility. The text tells us about the impending hailstorm, a divine consequence for Pharaoh's stubbornness. The message is clear: release your hold, protect your possessions. Nature will unleash its fury, but there is still time to act wisely and mitigate the damage.
We then encounter an admission of righteousness and wickedness. God is recognized as just, while Pharaoh acknowledges the wickedness of his people. He pleads for the cessation of the destructive hail, signaling a moment of desperation and perhaps a glimmer of understanding.
The aftermath reveals a poignant lesson. The hail devastates the flax and barley—crops at the peak of their growth, rigid and upright, unable to bend in the face of the storm. Yet, the wheat and spelt—less mature, more flexible—survive the onslaught. The narrative illustrates a profound truth: In life, resilience often requires flexibility. Those who are too rigid, too unyielding, risk destruction when adversity strikes.
