The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

A couple pieces of history with The Kinks to start things, then it's new tunes galore for the duration with Danno at the controls.

Show Notes

As broadcast October 24, 2022 with nice clear language and strong voice with nary a COVID bug to be found.  After several days' hiatus with flu-induced laryngitis and a COVID scare to boot, Danno is back at it this Monday with new tunes that despite the lack of volume definitely deliver.  Lots of new albums out this past Friday with Nick Hakim, Arctic Monkeys, Taylor Swift, and Dry Cleaning being the main culprits.  We also highlighted LEENALCHI's show this Friday in Seoul along with new singles from Phoenix, Dora Jar, BGYO, and the great John Cale really adding to the mixture on air.

It is 20 hours past midnight and brisk clear beginning of the work week has just passed us by in style and it’s time to roll out the new muses for their closeup once again, fair listener. And of course tonight is typed into the ether for those of you keeping score at home as October 24, 2022. Danno here as always as ever doing the usual unusual on the decks and the mic emanating the nice and the naughty from studio 2 at GFN HQ between 8 & 10 like I do, how do you do? Another great weekend of new music is in the proverbial rear view mirror tonight, and our full show is positively packed with new goodness and our usual various spotlights. First hour we got fresh cuts to taste test from Dry Cleaning, Caroline Polachek, Toro y Moi and many others along the way, and we’ll finish with upcoming concerts to end the first half. Of course, part 3 is all the new pop just out, and lots to do there with Arctic Monkeys and Taylor Swift dropping bombs last Friday. Part four we have the latest new Korean indie & on-the-rise K-pop artists to close the show, with a new album out from Peach Luffe definitely being a big spotlight coming up there. For right now though, we get in the Delorean for our time travel TIGHT feature, heading back to both 1989 & 1970 with The Kinks, and we’ll talk about all of that after Lola dances around in space. This is The Drop.
The Kinks – Lola
The Drop is back doing the thing for this week, our first original programming in a few days’ time due to a bit of flu difficulty and induced laryngitis late last week along with a bit of a COVID scare in the house, but we’re all in the clear to get back up and at them…starting tonight.
As we usually do, we just dropped our bit of knowledge for tonight with our TIGHT (or) feature to commence things properly. That was The Kinks with Lola, and we have a couple of features from the late 1980’s 1989 to be specific along with 1970 for tonight’s monocle feature.
It was this date in 1989 that the Rock Hall inducted its fifth class of legends, which included the Kinks amongst a roster of other mega heavy hitters in music, including The Who, Simon & Garfunkel, The Four Tops along with the Holland-Dozier-Holland team from the famed Philly Soul sound.
More interesting to us for this show is Lola on this date in 1970 hitting the top ten in the United States on the Billboard charts, their first hit on the other side of the proverbial pond since 1965. Why the hiatus? Well, it wasn’t that they weren’t active. After the band’s US tour in 1965, they were denied visas for the next three years, killing their momentum in that country. Following their return in 1969, "Lola" gets them back on the airwaves in a big way and back on tour in the world’s #1 music market.
#9870, @gfnthedrop, pod.
Now that we have that out of the way, let’s get into the new tunes for this week, starting with something from Dry Cleaning to lead off, and then we have other joints from Phoenix and Nick Hakim to back em up and complete the triad, all of which we’ll break down sans any geometry or annoying math side opposite the sonics. THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday.
______
The Drop returns once again, my friends. It is our New Muses Monday and we just let out our first trio of fresh new cuts to taste test for this week as we begin the end of the first stanza tonight. Let’s get to the details on that first triangle of tunes we just played and in fact continue to do it below this voice…
Dry Cleaning – Hot Penny Day* (…out this past Friday is the latest LP from the UK-based spoken word jangle rock crew called Stumpwork. Not a huge departure from last year’s incredible New Long Leg, which means it’s still an incredible album. Do check in full if you dug that naughty bit of bidness right there.)
Phoenix – Winter Solstice (…out November 4 and just announced this weekend if this French outfit’s latest album called Alpha Zulu. This would be the band’s 7th studio album and first in 5 years, and that all drops via Glassnote Records.)
Nick Hakim – Feeling Myself (…another great album just out Friday is the man from Brooklyn who just can’t quite be pinned down in any specific genre with the woozy psychedelic soulful sounds in the discography. Hakim’s latest LP Cometa or Comet is the name of the LP, go check it out, that’s all we got to say.)
So we still have a couple more joints to cover before the first quarter closes shop and we’ll start with another lovely bit of work from another artist that’s hard to pin down in Caroline Polachek who’s latest is called Sunset. This is a standalone single that was worked on by Sega Bodega, and another interesting bit of beauty from Polachek. After that, we’ll finish the first can in the four pack with Kelela and our final cut tonight is called Happy Ending, and we do indeed hope it is. THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday night.
Caroline Polachek – Sunset
Kelela – Happy Ending

II
Back on The Drop and into the simmery stuff here in our 2nd audio cold can for tonight. It is our New Muses Monday night tonight and welcome to all of you tuned in whether live or later. Let’s run down what just happened to your ears while noting there should be no harm unless you’re doing it wrong. That was...
Adam Melchor feat Fleet Foxes – Let Me Know When (…hugely anticipated is Adam Melchor’s debut album Here Goes Nothing, which has definitely turned out to be something. This particular tune features Robin Pecknold from Fleet Foxes and other tunes on the record feature the likes of Charlie Puth, Lennon Stella, and Andrew Starlo. Highly recommended new album, do check if you liked that joint right there.)
Nosaj Thing feat Toro y Moi – Condition (…this Friday, Nosaj Thing is releasing a new album, Continua, and so far the Los Angeles producer has shared collaborations with Julianna Barwick, Korea’s very own HYUKOH, and Pink Siifu (which have all been phenomenal quality, by the way. Last Friday the artist dropped “Condition,” and it’s a team-up with Toro y Moi, who Nosaj Thing will be performing with at the Greek Theatre in LA the day after the album’s out, which would be this Saturday.)
Pod, socials, etc…
Alright, so let’s get another triumvirate of tunes onto the decks before we get to the concert spotlight for the finish. On deck we have Dora Jar’s latest to be followed by greek and John Cale with Weyes Blood. We’ll talk the spins after the circles finish but for now THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday evening.
____
Back at it on The Drop as we try to power through to the jump coming up in mere moments. Danno here, what’s the deal Drop Tops (Kor)? We just put a wrapper on the new songs for the first half tonight, so let’s get the details there before we talk about the big show up in Seoul happening this Friday…
Dora Jar – Spell (…appropriately titled, this hypnotic joint is the latest from the rising alt-pop star out of LA who just keeps doing it so right. Do check the artist’s EP from earlier this year released in March called Comfortably In Pain if you wanna hear more.)
greek – best (…this is an artist that honestly I have no idea about and the more I dig in the more lost I get due to the ambiguity of the moniker right here. This tune just dropped over the week, and all I have from the bio is “lab rat,” so we’ll leave it at that.)
John Cale feat Weyes Blood – STORY OF BLOOD (…huge announcement here from the famed singer-songwriter, as Cale will drop a new album called Mercy early next year. The album will also feature collabs with Animal Collective and Fat White Family amongst others, so mark that one, out via Domino.)
Alright so as we do tonight we finish our first half with big shows coming up and this week LEENALCHI will be performing live in Seoul on Friday night which is definitely big doings. We’ll feature a couple tunes from our 2020 album of the year SUGUNGGA, which would be Please Don’t Go and Tiger Is Coming and that’s gonna do it for tonight’s first half. Stay tuned, new pop pops after the jump but for now THIS is The Drop and it is indeed halftime.
LEENALCHI – Please Don’t Go

Part III: New Pop

Arctic Monkeys – I Ain’t Quite Where I Think I Am
- One of the big releases this weekend was the new album from The Arctic Monkeys, which is called The Car.
- Out to pretty good reviews so far, this is the famed UK band’s 7th studio album and definitely a darker, deeper listen than maybe the band’s longtime fans would be into. We definitely enjoyed this LP over the weekend.
Taylor Swift – Anti-Hero
- Another huge album out this weekend is the latest from the American singer-songwriter superstar.
- Swifties everywhere were very excited about the LP although the reviews are mixed, and the title there is called Midnights (3am edition) if you wanna dig for more.
Meghan Trainor – Made You Look
- This tune is definitely our candidate for super viral hit of the weekend, just catchy as can be.
- Made You Look appears on the artist’s 5th studio album Takin It Back, which just dropped in full on Friday.
Shakira y Ozuna – Monotonia
- A huge team up right here, as two of the Latin World’s biggest stars collab on this tune meaning monotone en espanol.
- The song overall is about a relationship’s end, mutually agreed to by both parties who need a fresh start.
Katherine Li – Miss Me Too
- This is an artist who has made a huge profile with viral releases on social media.
- Previous tune Happening Again went very big with over 4.9 million streams on the spot with all the music alone, and it’s incredible to watch an artist like this do it their own way and get incredible play like this. Good stuff.
Ellie Goulding – Let It Die
- This tune just dropped last week from Goulding and heralded a new album dropping next year in February called Higher Than Heaven.
- The artist says that this song is in some ways a reflection on the last couple of years of the pandemic, with a strange dynamic in the studio as everyone had gone through it differently and in their own ways.
BGYO – Magnet
- Shout out to all the BGYO stans cluttering up my Twitter these past few weeks.
- This is a new tune from the band out of The Philippines and is their latest which just dropped Friday, which despite the English title is in their native Tagalog.

Part IV – New K Cuts

DAHEE - Footprints
- This is an artist that made a career out of their soundcloud account starting in 2019 with a release called Craft and Jun.
- Lovely artist with a brilliant voice who continues to make quality rnb-based tunes independently here in 2022, big up.
Dabin Yu – Fall
- Of course in Korean the artist would be known as Yu Dabin, but not much out there on bio & background info.
- This is a lovely tune that just dropped in September, so if you have some info hit us up. Another nice rnb cut right there.

Swimrabbit feat June One – EGO
- This is an artist out of Seoul who has been around since about 2018.
- This latest one features fellow Seoul rapper and singer June One, released September 14.

MOA – Timing Pool
- This is a very colorful Korean artist who’s low key sounds based in rnb and electronica have been making some lovely waves over the past few years.
- Check out MOA4550 for more from MOA, which is the artist’s EP from last year.

Peach Luffe – Fly Fly Fly
- One of our favorites to play on Tuesday night is out with a new album as of Friday called Everything Is Peachy.
- Peach Luffe is a Korean who’s been based in Canada since going to college there and deciding to stay. Everything Is Peachy is the LP title once again, just out in full on Friday.

Seoweol – Twilight
- This is a band out of Goyang, a quartet of long-time friends with this being their latest.
- The band is lead by Lee In-su, with the vocal duties being carried by Kim Kyung-mo, with the band’s emphasis being on making real quality sounds.
SURYEON – FRAME ME
- This is an independent artist out of Korea who made their debut last year in March.
- This latest tune really showcases the quality of voice for the singer, and was released the Friday prior to last on October 14.
