This is the Best Damn EDC Podcast. Mostly, you'll get audio-only episodes of Deep Cuts here with the occasional interview.
Magnesium is flammable. It's not corrosion resistant and apparently a real head scratcher for why Workshop would use it as a handle material on their new knife, the RMX. At least that's what the Internet thinks. But here's the thing. They're wrong, mostly.

Speaker 1:Let's do the damn thing. Welcome back to the EDC weekly. Is that does that feel like home? My arms wide open? We're back.
Speaker 1:The EDC weekly is back, sort of. So we've tried to bring this thing back, like, I don't know, a dozen times now. And every single time it felt more forced. And the more I felt like it was just a little long in the tooth and maybe a little outdated. No matter how many times I tried to tweak it or change it, the EDC Weekly just felt forced.
Speaker 1:So we turned it into a newsletter back in October, I believe it was. And that's been a lot of fun except for the fact that very quickly it turned into me up until one or 2AM on Thursday night trying to work on this thing and get it finished just three hours before it went out to the world. It was unsustainable. It got old quick, but we're not done with the newsletter, not even close. But this this series, I feel like it deserves its own identity.
Speaker 1:It's not the EDC Weekly. That's That's the newsletter now. The newsletter is gonna stay the EDC Weekly. This series here on YouTube is my way of getting back into doing stuff that involves the community, and we are gonna call it deep cuts. And it's also gonna have an audio only version, so if you wanna listen to it on your drive to work or whatever, there will be an audio only version as well, which will be a little weird for some of the segments where I'm showing things on camera, but those are gonna be few and far between, and it's mostly gonna be us talking one on one.
Speaker 1:So this is just the gear that I wanna show you. The cool stuff happening, the drops that you should know about, the comments that I can't not reply to and maybe deserve a little more explanation than just a clap back, and also just fun. There's gonna be a lot of community fun in here. Giveaways. There's a lot of giveaways, mostly over on the newsletter, but we'll get to that a little bit later.
Speaker 1:So this is deep cuts, and I am so glad to be back. Alright. First up, because it's always the question we get every time I go live, every time I'm anywhere, what's in your pocket? So we're gonna do sixty seconds or less. First up, I forgot all my gear at home today.
Speaker 1:Oopsie. I just very bad morning. So I had this in my gym bag. This is what I threw in my pocket, the Inkosi Ensino. I also have this thing in my pocket, which is not technically out, and I don't really know much about it, but this is called the Overlook from Big Idea Design.
Speaker 1:No official release date or any information on that yet. The flashlight that I always come back to is the LumenTop triple a frog with the extension tube. I also have a rustic heirloom hitchhiker. It's always the wallet that's in my pocket. And these right here.
Speaker 1:These dropped on my birthday, April 26. This is the new Topo Zippo from Best MUDC exclusive. And the pen. We have the bronze Pocket Pro US edition from Big Eye. And, I mean, I have my Garmin Mark as well.
Speaker 1:So that's it. That's what's in my pockets. So that comment I mentioned earlier at the beginning of the video comes from Obsidian One. He said, there's a major reason no one is using magnesium. Besides, it's not corrosion resistant at all.
Speaker 1:If you light magnesium and put it on a car hood, it will melt all the way through the engine block because you can't put it out. So that's true. He's not entirely wrong. Magnesium does burn very, very hot. Over 5,600 degrees, and you can't put it out with water.
Speaker 1:It's actually pretty tough to put out. You have to use a fire extinguisher, and I don't know if it's even a normal fire extinguisher. But here's the thing. In order to ignite magnesium, you have to shave it off just like one of those magnesium fire starters. You use a scraper and you shave off little bits of it.
Speaker 1:That, you can ignite at about 883 degrees Fahrenheit. If you're talking about an entire block of magnesium, like on a knife scale, it's a lot harder to ignite. You have to take a torch to it over 800 degrees for sustained time, like a long time to get that block to ignite. But that is just for raw magnesium. We're not talking about raw magnesium.
Speaker 1:We're talking about a magnesium alloy, which is a lot more stable. His mindset is actually totally correct, because the first thing I asked Workshop when they told me they were using magnesium in the handle of their knife was, can you start a fire with it? According to Dan, the mad genius who created this thing, he could not get it to ignite. It's a very stable magnesium alloy. It can still corrode.
Speaker 1:We actually had Dan tell us about that in the video we made last week when we were at Workshop HQ. It does corrode, and you still have to take care of it. But as far as ignition goes, if you are worried about a magnesium handled knife igniting in your pocket, one, that's not gonna happen. And two, if it does, you've got much bigger problems than the knife that's burning at 5,600 degrees in your pocket because you're probably already incinerated. You don't exist anymore.
Speaker 1:It's gone. You're you're gone. The knife, yeah, sure, it's burning, but you're already dead. So I would say when it comes to the skepticism or criticism of magnesium as a knife handle material, the bigger question mark really comes to corrosion because Dan talked about that. Right?
Speaker 1:It's one of the reasons that these knives come with cerakote on them. But for me, there's still a question mark there. What happens when the Cerakote wears away? Because you've got this little button and one that interacts with the handle, you're gonna eventually wear that Cerakote away. Okay.
Speaker 1:Now you have raw magnesium inside the core mechanism of the handle. How easily does it corrode? We know it does, but you have to take care of it like anything else. You gotta wash it out, clean it out, oil it, whatever. Okay.
Speaker 1:Fine. You've got a corrosion issue that you have to stay ahead of. That's fine. There are tool steel knives that I really like because I like the way it patinas. So you just kinda learn to deal with it.
Speaker 1:But the question is not, will it corrode? Sure. It's probably gonna corrode. The question is how bad does it corrode? And if you let it corrode on accident, can you break it loose?
Speaker 1:Right? Can you take a hammer and just pop that button to break it loose? If you do that, are you gonna screw the tolerances? Is the knife handle still usable? Can you take this thing apart and scrape it out with a wire brush and put it all back together?
Speaker 1:That's the big question mark for me. It's not, will it corrode? Dan has one that he's carried for three years and it has corroded and it's patinaed and it looks really nice. The patina will actually probably help with
Speaker 3:the corrosion. I carry raw magnesium. So that's literally raw magnesium. It patinas and looks like a dark titanium. So this is a natural patina.
Speaker 3:This has been in my pocket for almost two and a half, three years now. Right? You'll see wear on the edges where it's, you know, wears on pocket and stuff. And this knife has been through a lot for, you know, several years. And I carry
Speaker 1:so this this is an
Speaker 3:example of this one's about three weeks. I love the way magnesium patina is. But But if I dip this in saltwater
Speaker 1:Corrodes.
Speaker 3:And don't don't dry it and oil it right away, like, within an hour or two, your button will be stuck.
Speaker 1:There you go. Yeah. Circuit. Yeah. Everybody at Work Sharp has been carrying this knife for a very long time.
Speaker 1:And this is not like blind faith for me in Work Sharp. I just feel like they wouldn't have spent years working on this knife and developing it and choosing to go with magnesium if they had seen significant issues with corrosion over the years. It would have been easier, I think, if they were having corrosion issues to just switch to aluminum or titanium or another material. I don't think that they would continue to move forward if they were testing in house and sending out units. I mean, they've they've sold hundreds of these already to people at Blade Show.
Speaker 1:I don't think they would have moved forward if corrosion was a massive issue. I've carried one. I haven't had any issues with corrosion, but I've had only Cerakote versions. So what that makes me feel is that we should test it. I should take some of these that I have, we have several of them, and see how they deal with corrosion even if they're cerakoted and maybe see if they'll get me a raw magnesium one and we could also put that through its paces just to see.
Speaker 1:That that's where my brain goes, but I don't think that it's a massive issue. I think it's just kind of like rust on a tool steel. As long as you stay ahead of it and maintain it, it's probably a nonissue. But as far as ignition goes and burning in your pocket and burning through your engine block, I don't think you have to worry about that. That is a question from obsidian one.

Speaker 1:Alright. Now we're to the carry of the week. We're still doing this. We're still gonna go through submissions and talk about carries and cool gear, just not the entire video. I went through a pretty big backlog of submissions, and I chose this one.
Speaker 1:It comes from six by six Matt over on Instagram. And the reason I chose this one is actually because I really like what he did with the screwdriver setup. He took the seven eleven l flathead flexible ratchet wrench that's made for the Leatherman, put it on the key chain, and then he has this thing. It's from Railer. It's a bit holder that fits in his pocket.
Speaker 1:It's like a really compact and very versatile pocket screwdriver set. He's also got lock picks and a whole bunch of other stuff here. So he has a carry commission wazoo cash belt, which we have in stock. Those are very cool. You can stash stuff inside the belt.
Speaker 1:He also has Alpaca Gear Zip Pouch Pro. Quick aside with that, Ricky and I have been kicking around this idea for a few months now about me doing a wallet only EDC. So for one whole week, I can only carry what I can fit in a wallet, and the wallet I chose, if we were gonna do that, is this very wallet. So let me know in the comments if you would like to see us do something kinda like that, like a little challenge where I have to only carry what can fit in a wallet. Anyway, he also has a Mummert Knives Destructor Agua Reaper cutting card.
Speaker 1:I think that's the thing that's sticking out of the wallet. He also has a Covert Instruments RIV pick, a seven eleven l Flexhead EDC ratchet wrench, the railer bit holder with PB Swiss bits, and then finally, the watch at the top of the photo is the Breitling Navitimer. He says, I may add a few things depending on the day, but these are the items that are most always with me. I still love my alpaca wallet as the zipper pouch keeps me from losing small items. I always have one or two or three Covert Instruments items with me, but the Ribpick always stays in the wallet.
Speaker 1:I didn't think about including the Wazoo belt last time I was featured, but if I'm wearing a belt, this is the one. Plenty of other goodies cashed in there. I still have the Panerai, but the Breitling Navitimer 46 millimeter in green is on my wrist more often than not. Lastly, I decided to add the seven eleven l to my minimalist key chain, and the railer bit holder keeps my trusty PB Swiss bits in place in case I need them while away from the house. If I take much more than this, I usually carry the Paladin thirty three Outback Omega Ultralight.
Speaker 1:I think I can blame Taylor for that purchase. Sorry, not sorry. It's a great bag. And this is a cool carry. I just there's no knife except for the cutting card.
Speaker 1:Like, there's a cutting card, but no knife. That actually just occurred to me. There's no knife in this photo. So kinda cool, honestly. How much do you use that cutting card?
Speaker 1:I see those, like, card multi tool things all the time, but does anybody actually use them? I don't know.
