The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

Both hours tonight start with our own dedications to the late, great Betty White, and it's pretty much fresh & new throughout otherwise, as she'd have liked it (or not).

Show Notes

As broadcast January 3, 2022 with plenty of extras for your tank as we start this Year of the Tiger.  Happy New Year to all of you, and it's a shame we had to end 2021 with the unfortunate passing of Betty White, who was not just a brilliant actor and comedian, but a trailblazer in showbusiness becoming a producer at a time when a woman doing such things was unheard of.  A true gem in the morass of humanity, she will be missed.  So, we began both hours with both Katherin Bass & Danno's own unique tributes to the late great Betty White, and then it's two hours of fresh, hot, new stuff, which even at 99 Betty White truly was.

It is 20 hours past midnight and the very first regular programming of the year is on tonight, fair listener with a very happy new year to you. Whew…we made it. And this Monday’s opening salvo of the year of the tiger is roared and bellowed into posterity as January 3, 2022. This is Danno still intact ready to go from studio 2, GFN HQ in downtown Gwangju, how do you do? Best wishes go out to all of you and your loved ones for this year, let’s hope for the best even though I’m aware that even that is asking a LOT. So, as we do this and any Monday it is our New Muses Monday first hour, and there’s a lot of new singles to explore that dropped in December late, and for our 2nd hour Popcast feature Kat Bass will be in the house once again doing a roughly similar thing in our 2nd hour for all the new big pop tunes that we may have missed winding down 2021. For right now though, we remember a woman who was empowered before that was even a thing, a trail blazing comedian and actor who aged like fine wine, but all things must end as Betty White passed over the new year so we’ll start with one of her favorite songs ever, and fittingly enough since the 9 to 5 has begun once again, so let’s get busy. THIS is The Drop.
Dolly Parton – 9 to 5
The Drop has once again fired up the mic and the red light is on for our very first Monday sail of the new year. How’s it going Drop Gangsters? (KOR) Danno here, going on feeling strong and we hope you are feeling likewise as the year of the tiger dawns.
It is our New Muses Monday presently, starting with our Betty White-dedicated opener. The actress, comedian, producer, and all-around stand up personality passed away aged 99 over the new year on Friday, just before her 100th. Thus, we started with what was one of her favorite singles, that was Dolly Parton with 9 to 5, and two more powerful righteous females in the entertainment industry you’d be hard-pressed to find.
The accolades just go on & on with Betty White, who was a genius and one of the world’s most beloved personalities. An award-winning singer herself, she really rose to fame as an actor on the Golden Girls and prior to that as part of the cast on The Mary Tyler Moore Show.
In a Hollywood environment that mainly sidelined women in the 1960’s, Betty White was not only appearing on hit TV shows but also producing them as well. A trail blazer before trails were even getting blazed for women, Betty Marion White Ludden, rest in power supreme.
So, we’ll start things tonight with our New Muses Monday, and there’s a very decent bit of last-minute gifts that the music world has left at our doorstep. Next block we’ll start with the latest from Waxahatchee, then it’s Yot Club and Tame Impala to finish things off, and we’ll discuss some of the background to all three after the foreground dies down. THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday maiden voyage of 2022.
______
Back on The Drop and into the final airbreak for part 1 this evening. Happy New Year to all of you Drop Gangsters whether listening now or later (KOR HNY). Danno still here, always at the ready for our Monday night new music throwdowns, and of course Kat Bass will join us after the hour flips past 9pm for our Popcast feature tonight, and in both hours we’re kind of going over the last few nuggets of 2021. And to that end, we just did our first block of the New Year, so let’s run down what we just rocked. That was…
Waxahatchee – Tomorrow (…one of the latest drops of 2021, this is part of an Apple TV Series called El Deafo which Katie Crutchfield aka Waxahatchee has done. The cartoon series drops on Friday, Jan 7. The series is an animated adaptation of Cece Bell’s best-selling graphic novel of the same name, by the way.)
Yot Club – Deer Island (…this is the third and final single to the Santolina EP, with the singer explaining that Deer Island is a place with a population of zero, and for all those missing the sun-kissed summer days, that one is definitely for you. The Santolina EP drops a week from Friday on January 14.)
Tame Impala – No Choice (…a bit of a b-side or left on the cutting room floor joint for The Slow Rush album, which Jeff Parker dropped waaaaay in early 2020. The Slow Rush is getting set for a deluxe edition release featuring b-sides, castaways, and remixes that features Blood Orange and Four Tet along with some extended cuts as well, and that drops in full February 18.)
Okay, so we still got a couple of joints to rock to end off part 1 this evening, and up next we got another follow-up release coming from Khruangbin. Of course, everyone will remember the Houston trio dropped Texas Sun previously featuring fellow Texan Leon Bridges, and now the Texas Moon EP is set to drop on February 18 as well! We’ll rock the Texas Moon version of B-side to start the end of the first quarter, then it’s Barry Can’t Swim with a cut called Everything Is Going To Be Alright, and let’s hope against hope for THAT, Drop Gangsters. THIS is The Drop on your first Monday of 2022.
___
The Drop returns as we have officially buzzed in for movement 2 of our radiological orchestra, our first of the new year and a happy one to you & yours. Danno here, keeping things at an intelligible disarray from studio 2, GFN HQ, and of course Katherin Bass will be in the house for hour 2 on our Popcast maiden voyage as well. For right now though, we just opened up this can of part 2 worms, so let’s see what we got in there…
Shygirl – Cleo at Abbey Road (…the original of this tune was released in October and is such a totally different animal to what you have on this, which was recorded live at Abbey Road in studio 1 for their 90th anniversary festivities. Featuring an 18-piece orchestra, the dance tune is totally slowed into a pensive almost inverted slow motion image of itself. Big up to everyone involved on that live recording it sounds amazing.)
serpentwithfeet – Bless The Telephone (…this is a cover of an original by Labi Siffre released in 1971 on The Singer and The Song LP. Now, we have this version, a beautiful reminder to contact your loved ones during the holidays and even now if you haven’t yet. Do check serpentwithfeet’s LP from last year, Deacon if you like what you heard there.)
Okay, so moving ever forward, we have a trio of new cuts to check out and up next is the latest from Big Thief then joints from Kevin Morby and Animal Collective to let the night continually dream away, and we’ll get into some of the details behind these balloons side opposite their return to earth. THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday night.
____
The Drop is back and at it for the final time here in the first hour of the first show in 2022 for tonight. Danno here, keeping things in order but in my own disheveled kinda way, coming at you but not necessarily for you from studio GFN HQ in downtown Gwangju. Let’s get to that last triad of tunes we just let into space for now before we close the door on the first half, though…
Big Thief – Certainty (…some big stuff is on the way from Adrien Lenker and company, as a very expansive double LP is dropping February 11 via 4AD. The album, entitled Dragon New Mountain I Believe In You, is the band’s very first since releasing the Two Hands and UFOF LP’s in 2019, both of which were exceedingly good.)
Kevin Morby – I Hear You Calling (…this one dropped mid-December and is part 2 of the Dead Oceans label’s tribute to folk musician Bill Fay, with Steve Gunn releasing the first in November. Now, we have this, the original of which appeared on the cult icon’s Time of The Last Persecution LP, released 40 years prior in 1971.)
Animal Collective – Walker (…not a cover here but an original tribute to the late, great Scott Walker, thus the title. Born in Ohio, Walker rose to fame as a teen pop idol in the 1960s, later moving into moodier and more avant-garde works. He unfortunately passed away back in 2019 in his adopted home in London, and the band actually started writing this song about the same time. The song will be part of the upcoming Animal Collective LP Time Skiffs, dropping in just over a month on February 4.)
Okay, so we are rapidly approaching halftime right now, but still have a bit of time to get in a couple more joints. Up next is Sam Fender with a lovely acoustic version of his Seventeen Going Under, the title track to his 2021 LP, and then we’ll finish with Porches and a tune called Adore You, cuz we do. You’re The Best! This is The Drop on your New Muses Monday and we are at the end of the first half.
Sam Fender feat Holly Humberstone – Seventeen Going Under (acoustic)*
Porches – Adore You

The Gossip

Wiz Khalifa & Snoop Dogg - Young, Wild & Free
A tiny blast to the past, we play Young, Wild & Free as a tribute to now passed actor, Betty White. A former Golden Girls star, passed last December 31st in 2021 at the age of 99. She was beloved by many all over the world, including famous rapper Snoop Dogg. (Hence today's selection)

Miley Cyrus - Midnight Sky
Miley Cyrus, famous as an old Disney star and powerful pop singer, kicked off the New Year with a cheeky mistake. She's hosted a New Year's Eve Party performance and encounters a wardrobe malfunction as her top breaks off. The situation was handled perfectly and everyone loves her for it.

Missed Tunes

Sarah Kinsley - The King
06.04.2021
The song showcases a lyrical culmination to the EP’s theme of dwelling on the past and embracing a new era of self-discovery. You can listen to the track on her latest EP also titled as The King.

Emmy Meli - I am Woman
11.18.2021
Emmy Meli is a 20-year-old singer from California who gained a bit of popularity after posting the song on social media. Meli says she wrote the song to "empower women". I feel the song itself isn't given enough attention.

Chloe Moriondo - Girl on TV
11.12.2020
Girl On TV is about Chloe Moriondo feeling upset and wishing she could be happy like the girl on the TV show. She believes that she’s the only one who feels this, making her a “freak” to society. Honestly, in reality I think we all compare ourselves to fictional characters.

Cody Fry - Eleanor Rigby
October, 2021
Originally a Beatles song, Fry’s version of “Eleanor Rigby” was inspired by the pandemic, amplifying the original to ecstatic heights, driven by the notion of “all the lonely people,” and the fear and dread of living in a dying town or not fitting in.

Celeste - Strange

Part IV

Tones and I - Cloudy Day
06.10.2021
Discussing the song's origins, Tones and I said that after her friend died in January of 2021, she was struggling to complete her album. Shortly after, she was told this saying from his late mother — "on a cloudy day, look up into the sky and find the sun", inspiring her to write this song.

*Upsahl - Time of My Life
07.30.2021
Time Of My Life is the third single from UPSAHL’s album Lady Jesus. The song talks about how what was supposed to be the happiest point in her life according to other people was actually really difficult for her. listening to the lyrics myself, I resonate with the singer.

88rising & BIBI - The Weekend
10.14.2021
South Korean singer BIBI has released a brand-new track in collaboration with Asian-American label 88rising. The song connected to the feeling of desperation and sadness of being hopeful and then left hanging.

boy pablo- wachito rico
10.23.2021
Wachito Rico is the eleventh song and the title track of boy pablo’s second album. The song is about a relationship that’s been a bit stale and how he wants to move out of the ordinary, get some rhythm and just dance, ultimately having a good time together.
