Good morning and
welcome to Morning Cereal.
Okay, good morning and welcome to Friday.
You made it.
And just like that last office donut that
survived until noon,
you too have held strong
through the week.
Well, today is Decide to be Married Day,
which sounds like a
pop-up quiz in a relationship,
but I don't want to be the one to push
you into something
that you're not ready for.
Here's something with a
little less commitment.
It's also National Food Truck Day, and I
have no problem pushing
you into some nice truck
tacos.
Well, lastly, given it's now full-on
summer and I know your
future is bright enough, it's
also National Sunglasses Day.
So throw on those shades
and block out the haters.
Our quote today is from someone who
frequents food trucks, I'm guessing.
Well, it's from Toby McGuire who said,
"You live your life and
it shapes you in certain
ways and I just try
to be true to myself."
Well, it's a simple reminder that growth
doesn't require perfection, just a bit of
honesty and the willingness to keep
showing up as yourself.
Well, today's news, facts and
birthdays are for June 27th.
We're going to start back only in 1994.
That's when Aerosmith released their Big
One's greatest hit album.
Then in 1998, Windows 98 was officially
released by Microsoft.
Then in 1999 on this date, Tony Hawk
became the first
skateboarder to land a 900.
Do you remember watching that at the X
Games in San Francisco?
I think he tried it a couple of times
before he actually made
it, but it was a two and
a half revolution aerial spin.
Nicely done, Tony.
All right.
Well, lastly, in 2003, you might remember
this one as well, Charlie's Angels, full
throttle, it hit theaters.
Well, happy birthday to you
if today is your birthday.
You share birthday with actor in our
friendly neighborhood
Spiderman, Tobey Maguire.
He's 49 today.
And director and producer behind Lost and
Star Trek, JJ Abrams.
He's 58 today.
And designer and bridal
fashion icon Vera Wang.
She's 75 today.
And lastly, the late Helen Keller was
born on this date in 1880.
Well, the number one song on this date
back in 1985 was Heaven by Brian Adams.
And this was a power ballad that was
originally written for a movie
soundtrack, which was
A Night in Heaven.
But it found a new life
on Brian's album, Reckless.
So here's a fun fact.
Brian Adams almost didn't even include it
on that album because
he thought it was too
soft.
Well, it's a good
thing he changed his mind.
The song hit number one on the Billboard
Hot 100 and it became
a staple of 80s slow
dances and prom nights.
And not only that, the song is special to
me personally because
a remake of that song
was the song that my wife
and I used for our first dance.
It was the candlelight remix.
So again, love the song.
Well, enough about me.
Let's talk about Stephen R. Covey's The
Seven Habits of Highly Effective People.
And we're still in habit
three, but first things first.
And today's
sub-chapter is go for delegation.
So in this section, Covey digs in a
little bit more into this
common, but this very flawed
approach to delegation,
which he calls go for delegation.
It's the kind of management where you
assign tasks like go get
this or go for that without
really offering real
responsibility to someone.
So this style might keep the engine
running short term, but it
creates dependency on the
manager, right?
And it burns out both
the manager and the doer.
So Covey is sure to note that this
method, it doesn't develop people.
It simply just uses them to execute a
narrow vision because
every step requires follow
up and approval, right?
It limits creativity and initiative.
So in Covey's word, quote, it takes more
time to train someone to
do something than to do
it yourself.
But unless you do, you're
stuck doing it forever, end quote.
So instead Covey says that what he calls
stewardship delegation,
unlike go for delegation,
this method focuses on
outcomes, not the processes.
So you define the results you expect, the
guidelines or resources available.
You set clear accountability measures and
you establish when the
results should be delivered.
We talked a little bit about that
yesterday and then this is key.
You let go.
The person is then free to
choose how they get there.
Okay?
The approach helps people develop their
capacity, their
judgment and their confidence.
Okay?
It communicates trust to them as well.
It also aligns with what Covey calls the
P slash PC balance, right?
The balancing, the production of the
results, that's the P with
the building capacity, the
PC, right?
To continue producing.
So if you're always the one solving the
problems and always the one
executing the tasks, you're
not actually developing your team or your
family, not even yourself, right?
You're just spinning plates around.
Okay.
So here's the takeaway.
Gopher delegation is reactive.
It's short-sighted
and it's unsustainable.
Stewardship delegation is proactive.
It's strategic and it's empowering.
So if you want to lead effectively and
sustainably at work or at
home, it's time to stop being
the gopher in chief and
start being the coach.
Okay.
So here's a little heads up for what to
expect for the next two weeks.
We're actually going to be out of the
studio shooting on
location for morning cereal and
a couple other podcasts as well, but
you're still going to
have a morning cereal every
day.
It's just going to be a
truncated version of it.
So I hope you enjoy that and I hope you
still tune into that.
But to close out today, whether you're
dodging food truck lines
or just hunting down wedding
invitations or trying to
find your sunglasses, right?
Don't forget the power of
trust and delegation today.
All right.
Thanks for starting your
Friday with morning cereal.
