What is Dead Internet Almanac?

Old games, dead platforms, forgotten memes, vanished websites, and the strange little artifacts that somehow survived.

Six machines reached the Warwick Hotel in New York. Four more waited nearby in case the future crashed during the demonstration.

The computers worked.

The city barely noticed.

On August third, nineteen seventy-seven, Radio Shack revealed the T-R-S-eighty Model One while bombings, bomb threats, and evacuations pulled reporters toward harder news. A small gray computer had arrived in a hotel room. It would have to find its public somewhere less dramatic: at a fair booth in Boston, on a store counter in a mall, beside a cassette recorder and a customer asking what, exactly, a person could do with one of these things.

The name sounded like a parts label because it mostly was. T-R-S stood for Tandy Corporation and Radio Shack. The eighty referred to the Zilog Z-eighty microprocessor inside the machine.

That meant something to people who already read hobbyist magazines. For an ordinary shopper, the more important fact was simple. This was a computer you could buy as a complete package instead of assembling it from a kit.

The early bundle seems plain and strange now. It came with four kilobytes of memory, cassette-tape storage, and a built-in BASIC interpreter. The package included the keyboard-computer, a twelve-inch monitor, a cassette recorder, a power supply, and a cassette containing Blackjack and Backgammon.

The cassette recorder was storage. A beginner could type a small program, save it as sound on magnetic tape, then hope the machine heard it correctly when the tape played back.

BASIC was an on-ramp. A person could type commands into the machine and watch the machine answer.

The computer sat somewhere between an appliance and a dare. It looked ready to use, but using it meant learning the rituals: waiting, typing, rewinding, loading, failing, and trying again.

Personal computers already existed before Radio Shack stepped into the room. The MITS Altair eighty-eight hundred had drawn hobbyists toward microcomputing in nineteen seventy-five. By nineteen seventy-seven, the Apple Two and Commodore PET belonged to the same new wave.

The T-R-S-eighty did not invent the category. It carried the category into a place ordinary people already knew how to enter.

The project began with Don French, a Radio Shack buyer who believed the chain should sell a personal computer. Through the microcomputer world, French met engineer Steve Leininger and brought him into the project.

The idea then passed through the usual corporate filters: cost, risk, disbelief, and a deep suspicion that a consumer electronics chain could sell computers to the public.

That suspicion made sense in nineteen seventy-seven. A computer still sounded like something built for a laboratory, a school, a business office, or a club full of people comfortable with solder and schematics.

Radio Shack sold C-B radios, batteries, adapters, antennas, speakers, and small parts that disappeared into drawers. A computer package costing five hundred ninety-nine dollars and ninety-five cents was a different animal.

Radio Shack’s awkward advantage was its store network. The same company that doubted the home market had thousands of locations where a curious customer could see a computer switched on.

The future no longer had to arrive through a magazine advertisement or a club newsletter. It could sit beside a cash register under fluorescent light.

One of the funniest details in the T-R-S-eighty story is also one of the most revealing. The first production run was tied to the number of Radio Shack stores. Don French later confirmed the logic. If the computer failed, Radio Shack could use the unsold machines inside its stores.

The company built the future with a fallback plan for inventory control.

Historian Matthew Reed reconstructed the scene at the Warwick Hotel. Radio Shack brought ten computers and used six for the demonstration. The spare machines stayed packed away. The computers behaved.

The press day did not.

Bombings and bomb threats were consuming New York’s attention, pushing the computer announcement into the margins. The T-R-S-eighty was nowhere near the center of the city’s story that day.

A machine that would help normalize personal computing began its public life as a barely noticed roomful of working boxes.

Two days later, at the Personal Computer Fair in Boston, the story became easier to see.

People crowded around the Radio Shack booth. A contemporary Associated Press report described a system with a cassette tape recorder, an integrated keyboard-computer, and a small television set for a display.

The suggested uses sound like nineteen seventy-seven trying to dream its way into home computing: payroll, math lessons, recipes, investments, and card games.

The culture had not settled on what a personal computer was for. It might do the taxes. It might teach the children. It might play cards. It might become a family appliance, if anybody could tolerate the tape recorder long enough.

Then demand outran the expectations inside Radio Shack.

Hundreds of preorders arrived. Telephone lines buckled. Within a month and a half, more than ten thousand people had placed orders, each paying a one-hundred-dollar deposit to join the waiting list.

The Model One sold more than one hundred thousand units during its first year. In nineteen seventy-eight, it accounted for half of all personal computer sales.

The human version is even simpler. People wanted the hard little machine anyway.

They wanted it with four kilobytes of memory. They wanted it when programs loaded from cassette. They wanted it before anyone had found a comfortable answer to the question of what a home computer was for.

Some of that desire was practical. Schools and small businesses could imagine uses for it. Hobbyists could imagine many.

Some of it came from play, curiosity, and status. Smithsonian curator David K. Allison said people were willing to tolerate the difficulty simply to play with early computers and find out whether they could make them work.

That may be the cleanest explanation of early personal computing.

The machine was difficult, and the difficulty became part of the invitation. You had to negotiate with it.

A T-R-S-eighty owner had to learn what a blinking prompt wanted. A cassette was no longer music. It was memory. A computer could be sold as a consumer product and still demand the patience of someone coaxing a radio signal through static.

Radio Shack continued to underestimate home use. Its nineteen seventy-seven annual report predicted a market among businesses, schools, service organizations, and hobbyists. Home use, the company believed, belonged to a later generation.

Radio Shack was already standing in the doorway.

The mall is the part that lingers.

The T-R-S-eighty made computing visible in ordinary retail space. A shopper could walk past stereo receivers and drawers full of batteries and find a computer waiting for a demonstration.

The sales counter became a tiny computer lab. The catalog became a map of possible upgrades. The cassette recorder, an ordinary household object for music and voices, became part of the ritual of saving work.

The machine had limits everywhere. Its display was stark. Its storage was fragile. Later machines would follow: the Model Two, Model Three, and Model Four, with better disks, better screens, and better expectations.

The Model One’s power came from where Radio Shack put it. A machine associated with institutions now looked like something a person could buy.

It still was not easy.

Early computer owners read manuals, typed examples, labeled tapes, called stores, and waited for orders. They stared at blinking prompts and wondered whether the machine was broken or whether they had simply failed to learn its grammar.

The dead internet is full of later ghosts built from the same bargain. Platforms demand patience, then disappear. Machines demand study, then become obsolete.

But sometimes an object survives because it taught people how to face the future.

Lean closer. Read the manual. Type carefully. Rewind the tape. Try again.

A T-R-S-eighty in a museum case looks quiet now. Its shape is still bright with the promise of the store: keyboard, monitor, cassette, and a future you could carry home in a box.
