The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

A little downtempo dreaming to start this week's show, and Kat Bass has a lot of chill stuff of her own along the way during our weekly indie & underground lassoing.

Show Notes

As broadcast July 26, 2022 with plenty for you to chill, study, and relax to.  This evening we open with a favorite from Mark Farina's acclaimed and highly influential Mushroom Jazz series, which starting in 1996 really brought what's now called lo-fi to the forefront of underground music.  We continued in that vein for the first block with Ted Feighan aka Monster Rally out with Botanica Dream on Friday, and we also had an interesting new LP from the UK's letherette to bump a bit as well with Kat Bass.  New tunes out this week are pretty incredible, with Japanese Breakfast and SE SO NEON's So!Yoon! teaming up for a Korean version of "Be Sweet" right before Michelle Zauner herself joins us in Korea live for the Pentaport Music Festival on August 6!

Part 1
The Hue feat Kissey Asplund – Stressin’
Monster Rally – Moon Flower
Letherette – Alone
Polo & Pan – From a World to Another
Stevie Zita – Ghostbuster
Divino Niño – Nos Soltanos

Facts
The Hue feat Kissey Asplund – Stressin’
- A song I immediately thought of with the bevvy of downtempo or lo-fi tunes out this week, as the kids say nowadays.
- Featured as one of the tracks on DJ Mark Farina’s Mushroom Jazz 7, released in 2010.
- Now, even for people familiar with a lot of the artists and the DJ himself in Mark Farina, this artist might be a bit of a headscratcher. However, The Hue is the moniker of house DJ JT Donaldson.
- Vocalist Kissey Asplund better known nowadays as simply Kissey, who does a lovely bit of vocals on that song, is from Stockholm, Sweden.
Monster Rally – Moon Flower
- Ted Feighan, the man from Cleveland behind the moniker that he himself admits sounds more like a thrash metal band is out with his career 13th album as of Friday.
- Botanica Dream is as it sounds, the artist combining elements of lo-fi beats with tropical sounds and flavors, with the instrumentation always taking a classical approach.
- Do check in full once again…
letherette – Alone
- This is the duo of Andy Harber and Richard Roberts who are based in Wolverhampton, England.
- The two cite J-Dilla and Daft Punk as inspirations for their sound, saying they land somewhere in between the two.
- This is the 2nd tune on their recently released BL6 LP, which dropped on Friday. Interestingly, it also has a DJ mix of all the tracks at the end as well.
Polo & Pan – From a World to Another
- Over to France with our final cut of the block picking up the tempo a couple notches there.
- This feels like starting on a desert isle somewhere only to get washed away by a rogue wave. For more from the Parisian duo, we’d recommend their album from last year titled Cyclorama, their career 4th.
Stevie Zita – Ghostbuster
- Our main man in Toronto is out with another single as of Friday.
- Zita has had a busy 2022, starting with the single 깐부 which was inspired by the Korean sensation TV series Squid Game. Big up to Stevie, always wonderfully quirky dreamy biz.
Divino Nino – Nos Soltanos
- Chicago-based indie darlings are out with their 2nd single to the upcoming Last Spa on Earth LP, which drops September 22nd.
- If you’re not familiar but like the sound, check out their acclaimed 2019 album Foam. Also for the unfamiliar, the moniker means Divine Son while the title to this cut means Us Sultans.

Part 2
Japanese Breakfast ft. So!YoOn! - Be Sweet (Korean V.)
Peach Tree Rascals - TINYA
Beach Bunny - Oxygen
Surf Curse - TVI
Yellow Days - Apple Pie
AMO AMO - LOVEY DOVEY

Facts
Japanese Breakfast ft. So!YoOn! - Be Sweet (Korean V.)
- First appearing on Japanese Breakfast’s beloved 2021 album, Jubilee, the immaculate “Be Sweet” has been reworked and re released as a special Korean language version featuring So!YoON! of South Korean indie-rock band SE SO NEON.
- Japanese Breakfast’s Michelle Zauner says “We thought it would be fun to put out a special Korean version of ‘Be Sweet’ preceding our upcoming performance in Seoul. I’m very grateful Yaeji helped me with the translation over a year ago. So!YoON! is one of my favorite indie artists in Seoul right now and I’m so happy we got to collab.”

Peach Tree Rascals - TINYA
- Peach Tree Rascals share their sophomore EP Does a Fish Know it’s Wet?.
- The collective’s signature “Rascal Pop” sound returns in this upbeat project, hinting that the group behind these easy-breezy beats is just as lighthearted and fun
- The EP exudes the confident streak of an emerging group sure of themselves and their good vibrations.
- Each track contains a multitude of genres, ranging from hip hop to indie rock to funk, endearing the work to audiences across the board.
- TINYA is the last track to the EP, mellowing out and overall wrapping up their musical journey.

Beach Bunny - Oxygen
- Our Chicago based band Beach Bunny is out with a newly polished sound, their latest album Emotional Creatures; a neatly packaged document of quarterlife angst.
- Throughout the record there are subtle hints of growth—both personal and musical—but they’re often dragged down by the redundancy of their thematic concerns.
- From feeling a little too dependent on a partner, our song Oxygen, to finding your dream boy, all relatable content for the masses.

Surf Curse - TVI
- I'm not entirely sure if Surf Curse’s new single “TVI” is more suited for the feeling of Friday afternoon freedom, or the chaos of Monday morning’s re-entry to the workweek.
- The band says, "TVI’ is an anthem about trying to stay out of trouble, whatever your trouble might be"
- In a weird way, it kind of hits nicely for both situations I've mentioned. They're both trouble!
- The singles the latest track from the Los Angeles band’s forthcoming debut album, Magic Hour, set for September 16 release.

Yellow Days - Apple Pie
- Apple Pie. A hard-to-resist pastry dish with a sweet, glazed apple filling, is the perfect inspiration for Yellow Days’ latest EP, as frontman George Van Den Broek explores the idea of excess pleasure and
complications that may follow.
- The five-track EP radiates psychedelic rock and airy tones.
- The artist says, "The nature of 'Apple Pie' being a sweet treat means it tastes great but over time can have unhealthy consequences. Over the record exploring the ups and downs of such a dynamic-talking of sex, emotion dependence, mental health and substance abuse,"

AMO AMO - LOVEY DOVEY
- AMO AMO is a psychedelic dream pop band from Los Angeles, California.
- And after two years! Our artist has released their second album, Peace Is Love
- With a controversial and bold cover photo for the album, the band has really given it's all.
- Listening to the album, all I could say was how it was pretty alternative, but rooted well in light gazing of dream pop!
- livery dovey may sound very cute, but I can assure you the music beg to differ.

Part 3
Cuco ft. Dannylux - Decir Adios
Phum Viphurit - Healing House
Peli Gene - Pipe Dreams
MarCo - Oxy Enigma
Blondshell - Kiss City
Fazerdaze - Come Apart

Facts
Cuco ft. Dannylux - Decir Adios
- Cuco’s twinkling synth melodies wrap you up in his simulation pop.
- Combining elements of psychedelia and indie rock with influences from his Latinx heritage, Cucos latest album, Fantasy Gateway feels like stepping into a brave new world.
- In inspiration of the album, Cuco says he hit rock bottom twice with drugs, and then one more time with drinking.
- he credits climbing and recording Fantasy Gateway with helping him stay clean.
- Cuco says, “I think with this album, it’s really just showing more growth than anything, I feel like my life was just going so fast, and I was just unsure of what I was doing… Doing the album really helped me out, writing and really getting together thoughts that otherwise would be scrambled in my head and also just led me to a lot of substance abuse.”

Phum Viphurit - Healing House
- The Thai singer songwriter has returned with their new single, Healing House.
- The track comes as the first release from his upcoming sophomore album, The Genge Jei Piece, coming out later this year!
- Healing House marks the artists first solo release in two years!
- The artists says, "This is one of the stories from my echo chamber head, roaming there for the past two years."
- Viphurit with be touring Europe for the rest of July, then join artists Keshi, boy Pablo, Ph-1 and more at Very Festival in Thailand this November.
- I would love to go!

Peli Gene - Pipe Dreams
- Solo project of Gabe Parker, Peli Gene has come back with new music, and more than one!
- The artist has finally given us their debut EP, Are You Alive?
- The 6 track wonder includes our previous mention back in June, Young Love, and today's song pick Pipe Dreams!
- Pipe Dream the phrase itself means unattainable or fanciful hope, perfectly summing up my life! I mean, the song.
- With an ubbeat tune and a hopeful tone, the song really hits you with some bitter sweetness.

marCo - Oxy Enigma
- Now, unfortunately this is another artist I just can't find anything about through my line of research.
- What I do know is that they've released a self titled album, marCo!
- First listening to it, I immediately had to find who they were, but all I see are 4 other artist with the same name!
- The album itself is funky, experimental, and fresh.
- I hope soon I can find who this mystery artist is!
-
Blondshell - Kiss City
- Kiss City,” the second single from Blondshell, a.k.a. New York-raised, L.A.-based singer-songwriter Sabrina Teitelbaum, is all about that all-encompassing rush of feeling.
- This isn’t an artist who’s shy about telling you exactly what’s on her mind.
- The artist sings, “I think my kink is when you tell me that you think I’m pretty.” Then she sings it again, louder, over screaming guitars.
- Honestly, I feel this is the only way to announce anything intimate about yourself. A nice ANGSTY melody and some honest words.

Fazerdaze - Come Apart
- With creative burnout, as well as personal and professional struggles, forced Fazerdaze's Amelia Murray to retreat from the music industry.
- Happily, she's back today with "Come Apart," her first new song in five years.
- Whereas the music on her debut album Morningside was mostly gentle dream-pop, "Come Apart" is a grungier monster, all lashed steel string acoustic and righteous anger.
- It's a new era for Fazerdaze, and she hasn't lost any of the considerable songwriting prowess that made her stand out half a decade ago.

Part 4
Mokita - Happiness
Vaundy - Soumatou
Singrs - Cheryl
Housewife - Bones (God Like You)
Slowlife - Dreaming
Paradise Blossom - Shape of You

Facts
Mokita - Happiness
- Gearing up for his debut project, Mokita is giving us a generous preview by way of his uplifting new single, “Happiness".
- Mokita reflected, “‘Happiness’ was born in my buddy and songwriting partner Trent Dabbs’ studio. Most every song me and Trent write together is born from conversations about life, faith, meaning, etc.
- I wanted to write a song about longing, about the craving we all have for real happiness, real joy. I found myself constantly feeling like I was working towards happiness, and not experiencing it in everyday life. It’s easy to lie to myself and say, ‘you’ll be happy when you have this amount of money,’ or, ‘you’ll be happy when this problem is fixed,’ But I don’t want to live like that. I want to be content where I am."

Vaundy - Soumatou
- Vaundy is a Japanese singer-songwriter, composer, producer and designer.
- He is a university student who not only creates music but also directs the visual aspects of his music including artwork, design and music videos.

- Soumatou is about how a problem can be no one's fault, but only fate taking it's course.

Singrs - Cheryl
- Singrs is the alt-pop project of Michael Beswetherick and Joshua Serrano.
- As another fresh new indie band, Singrs has just released their debut album of ten tracks, There There.
- Having their names being, Singrs, unfortunately there wasn't much I could find on this dynamic duo.

Housewife - Bones (God Like You)
- Housewife gives an obsessive, evolving sound to a shoegaze alt-rock anthem.
- Toronto duo Housewife have shared a golden new single titled “Bones (God Like You).”
- Bones’ is about struggling with ongoing mental health issues and feeling like you won’t get better, like a broken bone that can’t heal properly.
- Housewife says “It always seems like everyone around you is doing better and it reminds you of how lost you are in your own illness."

Slowlife - Dreaming
- Slowlife is the new solo project by Patrick Behrens, a songwriter from Southern Germany.
- A few years back Patrick was part of the indie rock band “In Golden Tears”.
