Jared: [00:00:00] Welcome to Vitality Radio. I'm your host each and every week. My name is Jared St. Clair and something funny happened, uh, just a few minutes ago when we were recording an episode of Vitality Radio. I've got this crazy friend of mine who's been on a couple times. Uh, her name is Nikita Austin and I only say crazy because anybody who's a friend of mine has to be, and so it just is what it is.

But we were talking about herbs and what happens when you get two herb geeks talking about herbs is they just. Say a lot of words. Like they get excited and they want to tell you all the exciting stuff about herbs like finna Greek and Tongkat Ali and all of these types of things. And when we talked before the show, she said, oh, I don't think I'll need more than 30 minutes to do five herbs.

And 52 minutes later I was saying, Nikita, we gotta end the show. We don't have enough time. And we were only four herbs in. So I convinced her to stay [00:01:00] on and talk to us. And this is what's really gonna be funny, is that if you listen Saturday, and of course you will, right? Because you listen to every single episode of Vitality Radio.

I know you do. Uh, you're gonna hear what was technically part one of this interview, but it's gonna be part two because of just how timing works. And this'll be part two that we're gonna play as part one. When you're listening right now. So if you love this conversation, which is gonna be pretty short, we're gonna talk about Bacopa and we're gonna talk about Lions Main.

We'll talk about a couple of other things like Cline and Colleen and that kind of thing. If you appreciate what you hear today, you're gonna definitely not want to miss the longer show. This coming Saturday, the 29th of April, 2023, Nikita Austin, welcome back again to Vitality Radio.

Nikita: I never left

Jared: Oh, that's right, that's right.

That's right. So a few years ago we talked about medicinal mushrooms. A and we had a lot of fun. And since then we've gotten to know each other a bit. You've, you've come into vitality once or twice, I [00:02:00] think. We, we met, uh, at, uh, Anaheim at the trade show just a little over a month ago Again. And it's been good getting to know you and becoming friends with you.

I love this, uh, shared passion that we have for herbs and vitamins and sports nutrition and all these different things. So it's always fun to have you on the show. And we had a great time just talking about four herbs. Uh, but now we gotta talk about a couple more things in Herb. And a mushroom, and that's all we're gonna talk about today.

This will be a pretty short show, but it's a brain health show,

Nikita: Don't tell them it's a short show. How we could be another

Jared: That's true.

Nikita: minutes on.

Jared: this could go, yeah. Yeah. This could be like Joe Rogan. This could be a three hour talk on Bacopa,

Nikita: It might be,

Jared: but probably not. But honestly, if you've already tuned in, you know how long the show is cuz it tells you. So anyway, Nikita, let's talk about this thing called Bacopa and focus on how it works in the brain and why, why Bacopa and Lions main [00:03:00] make so much sense together in some of these things.

Nikita: Okay. And I wanna give just a little story with Bacopa and why I chose Bacopa in the five different, you know, herbs and plants that we were gonna talk about is a really good friend of mine, she's a biochemist, and she reads jeans like genetic makeup. Okay. Not the jeans you're wearing, but your actual genetic makeup.

And she was reading mine recently and she's like, Nikita, I noticed that, you know, your acetylcholine levels are, are really low, that you need to start increasing choline in, in your body. This could be related to some of the brain fog that you're having. I also, uh, deal with a lot of depression and so there's always, um, or there's other things as well that I noticed that were low by, by reading my genes.

And so from that I started going, okay, my acetylcholine is low. I need to start taking choline again. What's going on? And I started kind of going down the rabbit hole of acetylcholine from that Bacopa came up. And so I'm going to teach you guys kind of that correlation between [00:04:00] bacopa and acetylcholine, brain health, brain fog, and everything else in between.

But that's why I chose Bacopa specifically, was because it's very personal to me right now, actually in my life. And it's also a very trending, um, Ayurvedic, an adaptogenic herb that's in the market right now. So it works out on, on both ends. But so yeah, we're talking about bacopa. I mentioned to you guys, it's Ayurvedic or it's an adaptogen, right?

What does an adaptogen do? It takes, you know, whatever's going on in your life and it helps you adapt to it. It finds that equilibrium, that center of balance in your body between the stress levels that you have going on. It's also very much known as a neurotropic ingredient. And when we think of neutropics, we think of brain health supplements.

You know, what's going to support brain health, but Copa. Does fall specifically into brain health as well. And so some of the benefits that Bacopa can give would be supporting your memory. And I'll talk about that with short-term and how they turn that into long-term [00:05:00] memories. Uh, it can also support kind of learning your response, um, when you have lear learning how sharp your brain may be.

It also helps with sort of dealing our stress levels. I mentioned that first piece there. It's an adaptogen, adaptogens naturally always help our body with stress. So you're gonna see that here as well. And then I've even read things that are helping pass for those who have, like epilepsy for example. I mean, there's a lot of clinical data, there's a lot of research supporting a lot of different variations of what I would almost consider like, um, well, epilepsy, I wouldn't necessarily put that in the mental health category cause I'm thinking that for myself.

But just people that have diseases, different issues, um, it, it can be very supportive across the board and that's why you'll see anxiety and you'll see epilepsy there hand in hand. So Bacopa has something called the tobacco side. That are in, in, within bacopa, that's what's giving it the active, that's what's really giving it support.

And you see it in two forms, an A and a B. Both of these can cross that blood-brain barrier, which is very [00:06:00] important when we want to penetrate the brain and give, you know, support brain health as well. So you can see that it can cross the blood-brain barrier. It really helps activate, um, this cascade, which then participates in memory enhancing mechanisms.

So there's a lot here again, that with, with bacopa and these backsides, they again cross the blood brain barrier and they activate that memory in the brain. Okay. It's not stimulating or sedative, you just wanna mention that it's not like a green tea or something where it's like gonna activate your brain and stimulate it through more of a caffeine sense.

So it's not gonna be sedative, it's not gonna be activated. It's just kind of balancing in between. Um, one of the fun facts I actually read was that in 1914, it was the first narrow neurotransmitter to be identified within the brain. So that was cool. I didn't realize that, uh, that, excuse me, acetylcholine, sorry, I jumped gun here.

But being that Bacopa can support acetylcholine health as well, this was actually the first neurotransmitter that they identified in the brain was [00:07:00] acetylcholine. So that was just a fact that jumped out of my brain. So, sorry, I jumped that one before I even got to talking about acetylcholine nerd alert, just things that come outta my mouth.

So again, let's talk about brain function. So it ultimately can enhance your brain function. Okay? It increases the dendrites, okay? Which are almost like these little, like little fingers, these little things that create this with, with synopsis in the brain that send the messengers across them. Okay? So we can almost increase that.

And these dendrites, again, are part of the nerve cells in the brain that are closely linked to learning and memory. So that's where you'll see that there was a study, um, as well that had tw it was a 12 week study. There was 46 healthy adults, they took 300 milligrams of the bacopa and that improved the speed of processing visual information that helped the learning rate and it helped their memory as well.

Okay. And again, that's at 300 milligrams. There was another one that was also 12 weeks and it had 60 older [00:08:00] adults, which had 300 to 600 milligrams of bacopa. So it kind of varied a little bit there, but again, that still sits in a very normal range between taking a capsule or two a day. Um, but 300 to 600 different milligrams of bacopa that also improved memory, speed of processing and visual information.

So there are multiple studies supporting memory learning, again, how sharp your brain is, how quickly you can process information. Um, so you'll see that is, is very important when it comes to just kind of brain function alone.

Jared: So let me stop you really quick, cuz there's a lot of things that people have read about for their brain. Um, you know, lots of these neutropic ingredients, some of which are, um, you know, uh, pretty standard, pretty available out there. Others are almost kind of in a gray market area where, you know, they're maybe not even totally legal it, so the neutropic.

Category is, is kind of a crazy category. There's a lot of stuff going on there. Bacopa, though is, I would say, somewhat unique in the category because it's got this massive, long, [00:09:00] long, uh, historical use, uh, in Ayurvedic medicine, which if you're not familiar with that term, is medicine from India. Uh, that which they've been practicing for over 5,000 years.

Uh, so this is, it's kind of new to a lot of people in America, but it's not new at all, right? It's been around forever and it's been used forever, and it has a really, uh, long history of safe, uh, and effective use, uh, for brain health. So I, I'm. The more I read about Bacopa, the more excited I become about it and the more I think I need to start, uh, potentially using it in, not just for, for myself personally, but also potentially even formulating some products with it.

Cuz I, I just, all I ever see is just amazing stuff about what Co Bacopa can do and anybody that listens to this show knows that I'm pretty concerned about my own brain and if you listen to this show, you know why. But no, really in terms of prevention of things like, you know, dementia and Alzheimer's and Parkinson's and that kind of stuff, anything that can contribute [00:10:00] to that is exciting to me.

And I think Bacopa is pretty high on that list.

Nikita: Yeah, I think it's underrated. I think we'll see more of it. I think, um, ashwaganda, when we think of the auratic herbs and the adoption definitely has taken, you know, the front seat. I think Olas there kind of as well lately. And I think Bacopa is certainly going to increase as, as we talk more about brain health, because one of the, another huge conversation is dementia, is Alzheimer's is cognitive decline.

I mean, that's a. A thing we see all the time. Um, one of the cool things that Bacopa does, and this is really correlated to the acetylcholine, is it actually supports your body by balancing all of your neurotransmitters. So it helps the neurotransmitters, which again, those are those chemical cells, you know, in your brain that are, that, that are used to communicate across the brain.

So they communicate for things like your mood, for your appetite, uh, for your motivation, for your focus, and such so forth. What acetylcholine can do, or, or excuse me, what bacopa can do for [00:11:00] acetylcholine is it not only kind of supports, um, sort of this increase of acetylcholine in the body, but what it definitely does is it inhibits the enzyme in the body that breaks down acetylcholine.

So here I am saying, okay, you have acetylcholine in your body. Yeah, you could take things like bacopa, which can ultimately increase the acetylcholine, but what it can also do is inhibit or stop the enzyme that's trying to break it down naturally. And so it's really, it's like a double, double-edged sword and it's hitting it from both sides.

It's increasing and it's stopping your body from decreasing, which is really nice. I don't often see that. You know, and, and going back to a product that we have in Solar Ray, we have a product called the Sharp Mind Focus Formula, and two ingredients that we added in. There was one Citocoline, which is a form of choline that turns into acetylcholine.

So we're supplying some added there. And we also added the bacopa because again, the bacopa inhibits the breakdown [00:12:00] of acetylcholine in the body and what acetylcholine does, as I mentioned, it does support brain health, but it actually supports taking your short, short-term memories and turning those into long-term memories as well.

Okay. It also plays a central role in the sy synaptic plasticity. So we think about how our brain and that plasticity and we wanna kind of increase our, our brain and enlarge it to retain more information that's, um, a, a big one. We can increase that, that sort of synaptic plasticity. We can store more information and create more memories.

Jared: Yeah, it's really, really cool. And the research on Bacopa, like I say, the more I read it, the more excited I become about it. And it does seem to have, uh, you know, multiple different roles in helping with brain health. Now, before we started talking, well first off, are there anything else you wanna add or any other studies you wanna sign on Bacopa before we move on?

Nikita: Oh no, you're totally fine. I have a few of them. I mean, it was like a, you know, 55 years old. It was a 300 milligram dose. Okay. [00:13:00] That they found that on initial dose. I just wanna mention this. Okay. On the initial dose, there was no significant increase. However, after 12 weeks, There was significant Im improvements in verbal learning and memory consolidation.

So I mentioned that because if you're like, okay, I, I, I need to focus cause I have this test tonight, I wouldn't just take Bacopa and assume that my brain was just gonna naturally go into the super alert mode. It can definitely be supportive, but over a 12 week period, once you build that up in the body, it can be really supportive, um, kind of thereafter.

So I just wanted to mention that, but no,

Jared: No, I appreciate it. Uh, because that's one of the things that I try really hard to do actually on this show, is help people understand not just the, what it does, but how to use it to, you know, kind of optimize it. So I think that's really valuable information. So we also talked though about Lions Main.

Now, when you were on before a few years back, uh, we talked about mushrooms and we sort of hit, you know, a few minutes on, I don't know, maybe eight different mushrooms. Didn't go into great detail on any one of them, [00:14:00] I don't think. And, and one of the things we've discussed is you coming back on and, and, and really hitting these mushrooms in much more.

A much more comprehensive way, which I think would be very valuable. Lion's main is the mushroom of choice nowadays. Uh, lots of neuro uh, you know, neuro hackers or, uh, biohackers, you know, that are using Lion's main, it's really caught on. It used to be that when we talked about medicinal mushrooms, it was mostly rahi would pop up and shiitake and things like that, which are both great mushrooms for a lot of things.

But as people have been concerned about their mental, uh, wellbeing and their capacity to focus and learn and retain information and all these types of things, lions means really taken a front seat and it has a very, um, kind of unique mechanism of, of action when it comes to the brain and also has all these little side benefits.

So can we talk about Lions Maid for a few minutes and, and how it could potentially work alongside [00:15:00] Bacopa for Brain Health?

Nikita: Yeah. And, and certainly when we come back and do mushrooms in depth, cuz I'll be even more prepared. I could definitely bring out the studies and give you guys more of like how much to take even how often. But you know, I always, when it comes to mushrooms, I always try to have fun ways to remember them.

Right. And so the lion's main, when we all know at this point, it's lion's main helps the brain to retain. You know, that's the one I always go to when it comes with customers or cor decept. I say plug the cord in cuz it gives you energy. So when you think Lions main, think Lions main helps the brain to retain.

And again, it's really supportive for memory. It crosses the blood-brain barrier as well. We talked about crossing that blood-brain barrier and how it supplies the nutrients to the brain. I think one of the things that ties really well with what I had just talked about with Bacopa was with that plasticity, right?

And then the brain. And so something that Lions Main is known as or known to have is, is sort of this B D N F and it's that brain derived [00:16:00] neutropic factor. And that B D N F, that brain derived neutropic factor is basically key in really allowing for, um, sort of that increase in that plasticity in the mind.

And again, what does that do? Ultimately increasing the mind, allowing that plasticity is going to allow for more information to be stored, more memories to be stored. It's just gonna give us a, you know, allowing more of the brain and more function. And so Lion's Main is, is really cool to take alongside Bacopa alongside a lot of different brain supplements.

And that's why, again, going back to the Solar Ray Sharp wine formula. Yeah, I mentioned the Cyac Colline, I mentioned Bacopa. And the third ingredient we do add is Lion's Main, you know,

Jared: I think they all make a lot of sense together, for sure. And Bdn f I mean, if you've, if anybody that's listened to a lot of my shows has probably heard, uh, Dr. Bredesen Dale Bredesen on the show before, who, uh, is a, uh, specialist in helping people with [00:17:00] Alzheimer's, uh, in both the prevention and recovery from Alzheimer's.

And one of the things that he touts constantly is the, the need to get that bdn f up, uh, and keep it up. And also Cline are two of the things that he talks about a lot. And there's just so much. Uh, really, really great clinical information on and, and, and studies that have been done on BDNF and keeping bn bdnf up.

I always tell, uh, clients that come into vitality that you can think about brain-derived neurotropic factor as, uh, that thing that is firing, that neurotransmitter that's firing when you're trying to remember where the heck your keys are or why you walked into the next room, or who that person's name is.

It's that kind of quick recall, uh, is, is one of the big factors of Bdn F but there also is some really, really good evidence that it, uh, plays a big role in retaining information like what you said. So, yeah, I think these [00:18:00] things tie together really, really well and, um, make a lot of sense in conjunction with one another.

And I'm gonna throw this out there too. You know, people who listen to Vitality radio. Hear me talk to a lot of different guests about a lot of different things and everybody's got their own, you know, little biases. Uh, Dr. Bredeson, uh, develops products for a company called Life Seasons and Nikita works for a company called Better Being that, uh, has Solar a and Cal and Natural Balance and some other brands.

And I think all of these brands are great, or I wouldn't have bring, wouldn't bring 'em on the show, uh, for sure. But they all have, you know, a little bit different way of doing things. And so if you're wondering to yourself, well, yeah, do I use this one or do I use that one? This is the thing in natural medicine that I think we all have to recognize, and that is that the ultimate wild card in health is you.

And that trial and error to some degree is necessary to find what you're looking for. The cool thing about these natural products is the error side isn't particularly, That big of a deal, right? We're not talking about things that are gonna create a bunch of [00:19:00] side effects or issues with you that you could potentially get from pharmaceuticals.

It's fairly rare to have side effects from natural products. And if you do get side effects from them, they're generally really mild, uh, more annoyances than they are anything else. So you can try something like the Sharp Mind or you can try something like, uh, the neuro Q from, uh, from life seasons and you can kind of test the waters and see how does this one work for me?

How does that one work for me? Or even trying individual ingredients like bacopa or like, uh, you know, uh, some people take sunflower lecithin to get their CHO levels up. That's something you could try. Uh, lions Mane, right? There's a lot of different things and people do tend to like to ask me, okay, so just tell me what do I do?

And that's a bit of a challenge cuz I don't know how your body is gonna respond. There are some things that I feel like are relatively universal, but when it comes to brain health, uh, you gotta kind of figure out what your body. Likes, uh, when you, when you take it. And the good [00:20:00] news is if you're taking something really great for you, it should be pretty experiential.

You should notice that you're forgetting your keys, less remembering names, better, you know, uh, retaining information better, all these types of things. And then the last thing I'll say about that, and then I'll jump off my soapbox and let Nikita finish, is. In terms of all that trial and error, she brought up a really, really great point.

And that is, some of this stuff does take time. So to try it for a week and say, eh, I didn't notice anything, is you're probably short changing yourself or at least potentially short changing yourself. Uh, and you do have to test the waters a little bit longer than that, particularly with brain stuff. Uh, but I will say this, uh, we've certainly seen with Sharp Mind, uh, with Lion's Main on its own.

With Bacopa on its own, uh, with, uh, some of these other formulas I've talked about. One thing that I love that we haven't talked about, magnesium three and eight, um, which is, uh, my favorite one is actually one of your brands, Nikita The Cow, uh, think I love these products and we have seen people [00:21:00] get significant benefit within the first month.

Uh, most of this stuff doesn't take 12 weeks, even though that's what the study has been. Uh, but uh, we do find that in many cases the results get a little better, you know, week after week after week type of a thing on, on, on some of these ingredients. So be comfortable experimenting a little bit with this stuff and listening to your body and, and paying attention to what's going on, and you'll find things that you really love that really make an impact for you.

Nikita: Yeah, and, and there are certain supplements that. You know, you can take and get an immediate

Jared: For sure. Yep.

Nikita: said, you know, and then there's some that will take a little longer and you need to build it in the body. And so, you know, when it comes to anything, I always say just at least try the serving the, the, the, the dose, right?

If it's a 30 day supply, it's two pills a day. At least try that through, you know, and if you see some improvements or you know, then maybe you, you continue it and maybe you see gradual improvements from that point on. But without, if you give it, you know, again, with the exception of a few supplements, [00:22:00] which we can tell you when you come in store, which ones would act quicker.

But most of the time I would give it at least two weeks. You know, otherwise it's difficult to make a fair judgment of that.

Jared: Yeah. And in some cases, you know, longer than that, some of these things, you know, I, we talked about the Magnesium three and eight, the Think magnesium, some of the best studies on that stuff were done over 12 days with like significant improvements in, uh, memory and learning and just 12 days. So depending on what it is, you know, the range is, is out there, but the, I didn't plan to.

Have this little speech today, but I did feel like, uh, there were gonna be some questions raised based on, okay, so what should I try and, and, and, you know, how does this one work versus that one and how long should I take it? And all that kind of stuff. Know that you are really your best judge of your health.

And while I know a lot of things about this stuff and Nikita knows a lot of things about this stuff and your doctor knows a lot of things and your nature path knows a lot of things, ultimately it is you that's in charge of your health. And listening to your own body [00:23:00] is a really, really valuable tool.

And, uh, taking some, um, responsibility in trying to figure out, you know, what it is that's gonna work best for you, I think has a lot of value. And once you find those things, it becomes pretty obvious that you're on the right track, you're doing the right thing, but sometimes there's a little bit of, uh, testing in the waters before you get there.

Nikita: Yeah. Yeah. And you know, you mentioned blood work on the last podcast that we talked about. Getting blood work done is a great thing. And also, like I mentioned on the last one too, is having your genes red. I never thought about looking at my genetics necessarily, but once I dug into that, I was able to see some of those, you know, neurotransmitters that I was lower in.

And that's how I understood that. But COPA would be really beneficial for me cuz I was like, oh, I need to, you know, I need to increase my acetylcholine. That's what's showing lower in my body. Well, I know that bacopa is gonna help increase that. I know it's gonna inhibit the breakdown. So learn your body, that's what you have.

And then, yeah, experiment. I'm in that process right now, I'm experimenting and then I'm gonna, you know, maybe get retested again and [00:24:00] kind of see where my levels are at. So

Jared: So I know people are gonna ask, and I know this isn't your thing, but, uh, what information can you share with us about this, uh, gene reading that you're just, that you're talking about?

Nikita: Oh yeah, sure. Um, so lady's name is Keeley Johnson, k e e l y. Again, she's a bio, a biochemist, um, from El Segundo, California. She's been in our industry for a long time. She's has to be one of the most brilliant people I've ever met. Um, and that's why I trusted her to go, okay, I'm gonna have you read through my jeans.

She, we went through every single marker. She has a whole, uh, protocol for it. It was actually really affordable as well, cuz so many tests I feel like, I'm like, oh, I can't afford, I always say only the rich people can stay healthy. Right? It's like, can't afford anything these days. But no, it was, um, incredible.

So yeah, you could definitely, I can share your, her email with you, Jared, if you'd like. And you, um, anybody that wants to connect with her and go through that process, I think you will be incredibly. Uh, amazed. I mean, I sat there [00:25:00] with like, wow, wow. Yeah, that makes sense. Where she, she points something out.

I'm like, I do, I have really bad depression, which I do as I mentioned. And I, I really struggle getting out of bed. That's where I find the hardest part of my day. Um, and so now we increased my supplement regimen to have like 900 milligrams of gaba and different things that she was able to recommend through that process too, based on, based on where I was low.

Jared: Interesting. Yeah. Well, I'll

Nikita: she does it virtually too,

Jared: Cool. We'll definitely look into that and, and, uh, have some information for you listening in the, uh, show description on your podcast app. All right. So before I let you go, Nikita, is there any other, uh, words of wisdom having to do with, uh, brain health or herb use, or these particular ingredients that we've talked about that you'd like to share?

Nikita: There's always more, but I know I've already gone over time and so, you know, I'm just, I'm super happy to be able to talk about these herbs and like I said, I will love to come back on and do whatever we wanna talk about. I think [00:26:00] magnesium though, like you mentioned, is always a good one. I could listen to magnesium over and over and so often do.

We talk about oxide and citra, but we don't talk about three and eight or even malate or Tor eight, so I think that'd be a good one for us to dig into next as well. But no, I'm,

Jared: love talking about magnesium. I do it all the time. Um,

Nikita: never, it's never enough. We can never talk about it enough. I really think so, no, I'm, I'm super grateful. Um, and I thank you guys for, you know, for having me on and for listening.

Jared: Excellent. Well, thank you so much for your time. I know I took you longer than you expected, so hopefully you're not too late for whatever it is that you've got next. But, uh, you're always a wealth of knowledge and a pleasure to work with. I look forward to doing it again. Thanks for joining me on Vitality Radio.

Nikita: Thanks, Jared.

And, uh, getting to get up on my little soapbox again and speak about, um, the things that I [00:27:00] love to speak about. We talked about the microbiome and we talked about how it impacts mental and emotional wellbeing and, and it was so much fun.

I'm gonna try and track down that video so I can share it with you either as a podcast or maybe we'll throw it up on social media soon if you missed it.
