Unknown Speaker 1:03
I'm hanging in there. A little under the weather but I'm pushing through.

Unknown Speaker 1:07
That's because you had autumn snacks. Oh my god. That's because you had autumn steaks you eat and fingers you eat and witches fingers and cakes and posh Hannah's she had us bake three cakes and one dough not not just three cakes. Three cakes. Mason witches finger. We made some popcorn. We made some popcorn. They showed us how to make the marshmallow with the butter and ball popcorn balls. They did give us a warning that it was hot. But you know, you know we wasn't listening to none of that. And I touched it. I was like Yeah, right. Okay. Amazing cooking class. It was two it was a whole two hours. Oh yeah. Two and a half hours. Yeah. Turned out to

Unknown Speaker 1:46
shut out. Shut down to made so many treats. You know. And every little treat we had to decorate and everything. So I went really well shout out to Chef de Yong. He did a fantastic Yeah, the kids absolutely loved it.

Unknown Speaker 1:58
And I will just say next time we promote for it. We encourage you to sign the children up. Food was provided. laid it out. The treats were good. I still have some popcorn and I have to look at it. It tastes it was amazing. But today we have somebody special in the studio because guess what Vegas we talk about the all the other things going on. Did you know we are popping popcorn in Vegas?

Unknown Speaker 2:22
I did not know that. A whole lot of popcorn.

Unknown Speaker 2:24
Wow. A whole lot. I mean, a lot of popcorn. That's wonderful. All right. So I'd like to welcome our guest DJ DJ nailing Hey, DJ, how you doing?

Unknown Speaker 2:35
I'm good. How are you? Thanks for having

Unknown Speaker 2:37
me. I heard you're chopping a bunch of popcorn.

Unknown Speaker 2:39
Oh, we are. Popcorn. To pop popcorn is being pumped in Vegas here. A

Unknown Speaker 2:46
lot of popcorn has been popped up. Okay, so the name of your company is papa Licious? Yes, Papa. Papa.

Unknown Speaker 2:52
Tell me how did you come up with that?

Unknown Speaker 2:54
Delicious Google searching and long hours at night random words together. That sounded decent together and we just put them together.

Unknown Speaker 3:03
I see you I know. I didn't even catch on his shirt populates.

Unknown Speaker 3:06
I was reading your shirt. I was looking for him on Instagram, Papa delicious.

Unknown Speaker 3:09
I love it. Okay, and he suddenly hit y'all with orange with I'm sorry with pink hair. I love it. He has pink hair. And I did I asked them. Tell us why you have pink hair.

Unknown Speaker 3:18
My mom was a breast cancer survivor back and I want to say eight years ago. Breast cancer. Yes. The after she got it. My cousin got it years later. Wow. She's about to swallow. Every October I come out with pink hair.

Unknown Speaker 3:30
That's wonderful. I love

Unknown Speaker 3:30
it. I love it. His mother is in the studio with you shoutout, mom. She is here supporting him. So papa Licious. How long have you had this business?

Unknown Speaker 3:41
Oh, three years now we are pre pandemic company. Pre pandemic company like right before to survive the pandemic. Yeah,

Unknown Speaker 3:47
that's wonderful.

Unknown Speaker 3:49
Tell us how you got started. Wow. Wow, popcorn.

Unknown Speaker 3:52
first started off doing foot first the foot. We did fudge first. But then we wanted to do something different because foot wasn't your around product. So we found a popcorn company in California that was for sale. We just had to go out there and check it out. See how it was. Look at it. We liked it. We loved it. Came home to Vegas talked about it. And we were like, Let's buy the company. Let's go ahead and buy it. Wow, I emailed them like let's go let's we want to buy it. He's like I sold it already. What? I'm like all man we missed about not even that much. Wow. But then we decided let's still do popcorn. But let's not just do like cheese calm one kettle corn. Let's do something different. Let's do over 100 plus flavors, and see what that takes us. Wow. Yeah, we just had to do 100 Plus flavors. So

Unknown Speaker 4:45
how many flavors do you have now?

Unknown Speaker 4:47
About 50? About 5050 Probably will be more than that. I just have I lost count long time ago. So you

Unknown Speaker 4:53
produce 50 every week when you're producing but you can go you have more than that. Right? Okay. Okay,

Unknown Speaker 5:01
all right. So, Papa Licious. Where can we find your popcorn?

Unknown Speaker 5:04
Right now we are the official popcorn or the aviators in Summerlin at the ballpark. We are in Planet 13. We are in Barstow station, California. We're in a gas station in Henderson call 24/7. Across from the DMV. We are in bigger California, soon to be back in T mobile arena. Soon to be in dollar loan center. And soon to be at the airport. In a few stores in the airport.

Unknown Speaker 5:28
Wow. So you are okay. You pop in popcorn.

Unknown Speaker 5:32
Yes. And it's just two of us to thank the whole team. It's just two of us to do it. Oh, wow. Everything pop it seal it baguette flavored everything market it. Push it out there. Ship it everything.

Unknown Speaker 5:41
So you bought your own warehouse here and you bought all the equipment and you just went for it. I got

Unknown Speaker 5:45
a commercial kitchen and bought the equipment piece by piece. Yeah. And started experimenting at home first. tasted good, what didn't taste good. What to put on the air. And here we are today

Unknown Speaker 5:56
so we can have a popcorn tasting party.

Unknown Speaker 5:58
You could so tell me about what flavors do you have? Tell me tell me the flavors. I'm

Unknown Speaker 6:01
excited. We do exotic flavors like Sadie's. You won't even hear like carne asada waffles. Carne asada. Carne asada. Okay, come on. Chicken and Waffles. Okay. Everybody's favorite banana pudding that I'm one seller. Wow. And it has real cookies in it when you eat it. So you don't just get popcorn. You get popcorn and cookies. You didn't bring us any samples today? No, I didn't. But I'll bring you out. I will we will have a popcorn tasting party. Trust them believe me. I will. We will bring popcorn and next time we will sit on the eating. Okay, fantastic.

Unknown Speaker 6:31
Yeah, because we need I need I need 50 flavors. Give

Unknown Speaker 6:40
me 50 But I'd like to like the banana. One is my favorite kind of cider. Those are different because nobody else has those. So I'd love to just try it. You know test them out

Unknown Speaker 6:49
and nobody's putting like cookies in with the popcorn and gummy worms which are alien mixed popcorn. Alien mix. The alien mix and has real gummy worms in it. I bet the kids love that. Oh, yes. And adults love not just kids. Adults love it to this good day. It's we wouldn't want different stuff out here. Oh, wow. Just wanted a typical everyday popular flavors. garlic parmesan. All right. Yeah, like cheese burger has my favorite cheeseburger. It's vegan vegetarian, so you gotta worry about none of that being in there. garlic parmesan, cheddar jalapeno cheddar. churro snickerdoodle. A snickerdoodle. Popcorn. Sugar cookie. I bet that's good birthday cake with real sprinkles on it. Oh, wow. It's been sprinkled on popcorn and stuff like that and make it colorful. And

Unknown Speaker 7:36
so I fly a lot out of Harry. So it's in a couple of stores and Harry Reid, right? Yes.

Unknown Speaker 7:40
It'll be in evolve by Hudson and also atrium by Hudson council.

Unknown Speaker 7:45
So what flavors do you have at the airport?

Unknown Speaker 7:47
We have sugar cookie, birth. You have banana pudding, cheddar, cheddar, jalapeno and alien mix for sure. Daily mix? Yes.

Unknown Speaker 7:56
Good. I'm traveling next week. So I'm gonna make sure I pop in there and support you buy a bag.

Unknown Speaker 8:00
I'm not sure what's coming but they said it's coming soon. Let me know I'll be

Unknown Speaker 8:05
traveling a lot for the rest of the year. So I'll make sure I pop it Okay,

Unknown Speaker 8:08
so as soon as I bring you something you can just put in your bag. travel friendly. Yeah, so

Unknown Speaker 8:14
with popcorn. I mean, I'm just thinking so how much popcorn do you actually purchase? I mean do you pop a day

Unknown Speaker 8:22
we pop per order depend on what the customers want and what somebody wants. So there'll be those custom custom fresh just fresh. Oh, freshly you get from us like one or two days we popping in and nonstop.

Unknown Speaker 8:33
Okay, so I met DJ at downtown business alliance. We were taking a class for six months. And he can't he was real caught why he sat in the corner. And as soon as by week four, well class four because it was foreign for the fourth month he said he does popcorn I think cap and I were in the room and he said he does popcorn. Popcorn like pop no popcorn is actually that's my favorite. That's probably one of my favorite snack snacks. This is one of my favorites that in potato chips. Popcorn.

Unknown Speaker 9:03
Let me ask you a question before popcorn. Were you a chef did you make other than food? I know you did Bush first with the business but were you a chef before or tell us what your life was like prior to Papa Licious before that

Unknown Speaker 9:13
has worked in restaurant business. Okay, T mobile arena for six, seven years. Full service just serving food. Customer service is what I did retail. No prior cooking experience suffer at home. Wow, we didn't cook anywhere. Are you fast food here and there. The teenager growing up. Like food just kind of came out of nowhere.

Unknown Speaker 9:30
But the good thing is, is that you sell food or you sold food for a long time. And you sold a lot of different things. So that's really the background you need to know when you're starting a business. You saw all those products right? Oh, what customers would pay for products. They like what they don't like exactly. So you didn't so you knew you did your research for a long time. So now that you start Papa Licious. You have all that education and you can come out and be a superstar. Yes. I love it.

Unknown Speaker 9:54
Are you ready to be a superstar?

Unknown Speaker 9:56
I am because you look like a superstar. You look the best I

Unknown Speaker 10:00
love it. I love the hair.

Unknown Speaker 10:02
I love the hair to

Unknown Speaker 10:03
appreciate appreciate the shirt I mean it's the whole image

Unknown Speaker 10:08
because he normally has blonde hair.

Unknown Speaker 10:09
What is your normal color? If it's not the month of October

Unknown Speaker 10:12
well the SATs are always blonde but I do like different colors on top of it like the pinks and blues the greens I was the velvets I like to the whole gamut everybody say I stand out in the crowd

Unknown Speaker 10:36
with that you doing the company instead of just two or you guys that's it I think was that your partner we met that partner met Matt Alright so what's Max background? I hate that Max and coming here with you today

Unknown Speaker 10:49
he's busy right now unless some other stuff but he does he does like really he does in real estate. He deal with management different places like T Mobile Walmart Best Buy. That's where his experience comes from. All right, okay

Unknown Speaker 11:01
sorry partnership.

Unknown Speaker 11:03
Yes. No, that's a great I love it. I love it. So where do you see this business going? What do you what I mean? What's your vision for this business?

Unknown Speaker 11:11
Next we plan on getting into the retail spot you have in our own retail location somewhere here in Vegas starting off in the end we go blow it up go global with it.

Unknown Speaker 11:19
So would you do a retail spot or would you do a retail truck? Both I want both. I

Unknown Speaker 11:23
want to capture all the money. Yeah.

Unknown Speaker 11:26
Okay. So with the retail space are you looking at something like that? This is somebody do pop

Unknown Speaker 11:31
by air at the Planet Hollywood Mall.

Unknown Speaker 11:35
No one the line is always long. It is it is line has always

Unknown Speaker 11:38
gone from Chicago where they came where they grew up at where they came from. I know I know. Okay.

Unknown Speaker 11:43
All right. So what else do you like to do? Tell us about you? Who are you? Where are you from?

Unknown Speaker 11:47
Chicago, Illinois. Born and raised. I've been in Vegas, seven years. Okay. From Chicago, West. Southside mostly in the suburbs, like Joliet Blue Island, Bolingbrook, Romeoville. Those those places.

Unknown Speaker 11:58
I know exactly what it was. I used to live in Chicago, used to live in 52nd and Ellis over there by University of Chicago but I know about Joliet because I believe Harrah's Casino has a casino that does. Yeah, they've been there for a long time.

Unknown Speaker 12:11
So it came to Chicago. You came from Chicago came here to Vegas.

Unknown Speaker 12:16
I've needed something different. I need to change. I hate to snow. Me in the snow. Don't mix that. All right. I understand. I needed to change. And I worked at Amazon at the time at a warehouse. And he said you can go anywhere you want to go with the company any just wait three months. I waited my three months, put in my Vegas. They came back and said when you want to move. I said give me August 19 20th. I'll be there. Get in my car August 19 In Chicago, packed it all up and drove straight here.

Unknown Speaker 12:46
Wow. Mom, what you know, I don't

Unknown Speaker 12:50
even tell her I just hopped in the car and just say let's go. She

Unknown Speaker 12:52
probably thought he was going somewhere. Right? She didn't even know. My mom is I wish we had mom in the studio. So mom can talk about a mom was probably like Okay, so what time you come home? It's like I'm not

Unknown Speaker 13:04
right. She called me in I was in Vegas. And she called I'm like I'm here I'm in Vegas. Wow. So

Unknown Speaker 13:09
how was it for you when you first got it? Well, you had a job with Amazon right?

Unknown Speaker 13:12
But you came here with a job so that's

Unknown Speaker 13:13
your job to stay Oh, I found a place today before move here. Okay, I've never been here never visited on the first time or to live on the first time we're in Vegas. So when

Unknown Speaker 13:25
you drove in on Tropicana, it came versus me being here why I

Unknown Speaker 13:30
have visited never seen Vegas never been to the West Coast ever. Wow. And I'm like I'm going I'm out. Peace out I'm out Illinois. bought apples

Unknown Speaker 13:38
bowl. You know when that Hawk hits you in Chicago? You you you do think twice more than twice immediately

Unknown Speaker 13:48
and you live at a good time because you left in August someone was about the end is about to be cold again. Yes. So you get here and what happens so so where do you live in when you first got here

Unknown Speaker 13:56
sequel suites over there across from around the corner from Jack in a box somewhere on the parkway? Okay, stay there and the rest is history.

Unknown Speaker 14:04
The rest is history all right all right so you've been here seven years say I'm sure you're not so you say I guess you move from Segal suites found just found your place a place in Henderson

Unknown Speaker 14:15
that's nice. But do you sell your popcorn Amazon

Unknown Speaker 14:19
soon to come to Amazon and Walmart okay. Oh wonderful soon coming we're working on it we're gonna get into shipping just right for that

Unknown Speaker 14:25
okay you because you have distribution you got to make sure that you can write it we had a caramel sauce

Unknown Speaker 14:29
on Walmart today we made two oh that on Walmart it was selling good. But we just stopped because the shipping costs and stuff like that they're very since they got more expensive than it was to sort of saw so we're gonna get back from doing that soon. Yeah. Okay.

Unknown Speaker 14:42
Wonderful. All right. So being an entrepreneur stepped out there to the entrepreneur thing was a scary for you when you first did it. I mean, just leaving because it because you don't have a job anymore.

Unknown Speaker 14:51
No, it wasn't. It wasn't easy, but I had my job I was doing this was a side business. I was just on the side working at a warehouse working in a team or whatever. Same time, and this was just when I had time, I would just come home at night and do the business and learn it and craft it and create samples for everybody. And then March of this year, we got offered the stand at the ballpark. So it was like, either I quit my job at T Mobile, or in having the standard ballpark, or I just keep doing what I'm doing now. And that was hard. Okay, I had no nothing to fall back on. I had no income to fall back on that's

Unknown Speaker 15:26
not that that's that's that jump. You know, when people say you gotta jump, that jump.

Unknown Speaker 15:30
And I was like, Okay, are we gonna make it if I leave my job? I'm gonna be straight at home bills gonna be right for us everything on because they'll come every month. They do. Yeah. guaranteed income coming in. I'm like, this ain't guaranteed income. We'll make enough money and we just and I'm like, You know what, I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna do it and you did it and I did. I stepped out on faith. Yes. And don't regret it not a bit and don't regret it. Oh, no. Looking back no looking back No, no, go to a nine to five. Not at all a little bit different. Not a little

Unknown Speaker 15:57
bit different. A little bit different. Okay, so

Unknown Speaker 15:59
however, when you expand and you hire some more people, it'll be fun to work for your organization. Right? It will

Unknown Speaker 16:02
be alright, of course it will. This shirt don't just start seeing as fun experience fun on a business screening fun. I'm fine. It's gonna be fun to work for.

Unknown Speaker 16:09
Okay, good. So you like house music?

Unknown Speaker 16:12
I do. Like all kinds of music. No music really bothers me all the country and everything. I'm eclectic. That's fantastic for music.

Unknown Speaker 16:20
I love I can't wait to get your trucks. I can see you pop on around town showing up to different events.

Unknown Speaker 16:25
You can't just see me now. First Friday. We got the first Friday. We have first friday every friday. Check that out.

Unknown Speaker 16:30

Unknown Speaker 16:50
Go and Papa Licious lb on Instagram or Twitter. That's P O P ALICIOUS. LV. One more time. P O P ALICIO. US

Unknown Speaker 17:03
Alright, so OB you are listening to the less awkwardly and Rhonda show. I am Lea Crawford. I'm

Unknown Speaker 17:08
Rhonda Dolan and we are here with Mr. Papa Licious itself. Well, we have a friend

Unknown Speaker 17:13
I can really say we forgot about her. She says she actually sat down and she said nothing. She'd been laughing she'd been delicious. was here. Yes, yes. Yeah. So Miss cap is in the studio with us as well. Just talking about recap. You had an interesting week, too. I know you did some things this week.

Unknown Speaker 17:28
Oh, I had an awesome week. It will. We had the novel Women of Distinction award which I sit on the board, which I actually sit on the board of. And it was a wonderful event. We had the Senior Vice President of the Raiders. Piper Overstreet White, who is the SVP of Government and Community Relations for the Raiders. And she was amazing. Okay, and we have our president who took us all into well, I call it the novel 2.0 on stepping up the game about certifying women owned businesses and advocating for women owned businesses. It was awesome. That's wonderful. Where was it?

Unknown Speaker 18:15
Where was the event,

Unknown Speaker 18:16
it was over at the West Gate. And we you know, when I talk about any event, that we're you have a reception, and then you walk into a room and it's, it's called the icon and you and you could feel the whole experience. And you could feel the energy of the people that was there. And everybody was supporting it. It was great. It was great. And I'm not saying that just because I'm on the board. But I'm saying that because those are what people came back and let me know that they were excited, they feel energized. And they feel that the organization is going just where it needs to be for women owned businesses to be advocated for love it. I love how to use join up of novel you can go to novel s in v.org. And you can sign up to find out when we have our registrations, you can sign up for membership, you can sign up for everything and finding out what we're doing. We're also having a listening session on November the seventh and even if you're not a member, you can go on and be able to talk about our listening sessions and be able to be on with those as well as we're having an event in December at the ward off a story. That's gonna

Unknown Speaker 19:31
be wonderful. I love the president. We had her on the show a couple of weeks ago and she was fantastic.

Unknown Speaker 19:36
It's fire is fire. I mean you just feel energized and as a wine business owner, you need to sometimes feel energized you need and you need to support and you need to know what's going on and you have to have people to advocate for you. And certifications give you the opportunity to work with corporations give you the opportunity to work with government entities and knowing that you can be a WB e which is a women business entity or a minority women business entity which is an M WB e those things are very precious to a business of going after dollars and making those partnerships with corporations and government entities and

Unknown Speaker 20:15
also you have to get the certification you have to have to get the certification just because you might be a woman and you do own the business. But they want to certify you. They go through and they have this a bunch of documents but it's a bunch of documents NABO does assist you

Unknown Speaker 20:29
but you should have all

Unknown Speaker 20:34
the all the other conversations you should have all those documents

Unknown Speaker 20:37
have everything in place and we're here to help you that happen for you as well as advocating for you. And that's the part you need to have support and be part of an organization that really makes that happen for you.

Unknown Speaker 20:50
I appreciate that. But DJ again, populations populations, yes.

Unknown Speaker 20:53
Alright, so

Unknown Speaker 20:54
we are gonna we're gonna figure this out and we're gonna do a I guess we should figure out how we do a tasting around we should do a post chocolate

Unknown Speaker 21:00
tasting. We should invite all our listeners out to come sample the popcorn and if they love it, they can purchase

Unknown Speaker 21:06
it. Yes, that's a good idea.

Unknown Speaker 21:08
Let's put that together that's gonna come in around Christmas

Unknown Speaker 21:10
time. Yeah, I think we should do it in

Unknown Speaker 21:12
December and December we do something and we don't we just have fun and bring your mama back out here. So she become my hair. She can party back that's I see thumbs up.

Unknown Speaker 21:24
No. Thinking about it. Oh, yeah. I'm contemplating every time I talk to her.

Unknown Speaker 21:29
When that when that Hawk hit or when she got back home, she can be lucky I can be sitting in the sunshine. Right? Days. Alright, so again, DJ, Papa Licious. Come on. Tell us on Instagram,

Unknown Speaker 21:41

Unknown Speaker 22:12
All right. All right. So Rhonda, you will know what TJ, thank you. Thank you for accepting our invitation to come on the show.

Unknown Speaker 22:20
Awesome. He is awesome. He is awesome.

Unknown Speaker 22:22
He is awesome. Randy got anything going on this weekend? Well, let's see,

Unknown Speaker 22:26
we just completed the city wide mentor information session with that. And, and we had a lot of parents turned out to find out about all the programs that the 100 black went to Las Vegas have to offer the students. Alright, so you're

Unknown Speaker 22:39
gonna run through those programs for our listeners who may not have been able to attend. I know you had the mistake, I noticed a few programs. And then you did a cooking class monthly. And we'll talk about that and talk about the sign up. listeners.

Unknown Speaker 22:51
We do Crossroads one and two, which is a mentoring sessions for young men and we do Junior High in high school. We do pathways to public safety, where you learn about different jobs that you can do in the community. We have Jr Investment Club, where you learn how to invest, learn about stocks and bonds. My favorite, we have the virtual, we have the youth economic empowerment club where you learn all about banking. We have of course, the virtual youth cooking class every month, we have a chess club, we have the collegiate 100, where we work with college students on the campus of UNLV. And then we have a professional development class where we teach students how to do their cover letters, resumes, how to interview and things of that nature. So we have a lot of different mentoring sessions that go on all year round. And the sessions are for for boys and girls. Some programs are just for the young men, but then we have the others that are for both. So we love it. We work with students from five years old to 22 years old. And most importantly, we have scholarships. And so if your children are ever part of any of our programs, when it's time to go to college, or to go into the military or to go wherever they're going next after high school, we have scholarships, because everybody's path is not going to college. Some people might want to do a trade. If you want to go learn how to be an electrician or HBA or any of those things. We help support whatever a child's dream is. But yes, it's fabulous. If you want more information about the programs, visit 100 black men, las vegas.org. That's www. The number 100 Las Vegas spelled out.org and look under the program's tab

Unknown Speaker 24:27
onto the program's tab and they do a very good job of updating and letting you know what's going on how what's going on and sign up. Yep, just be a part.

Unknown Speaker 24:37
Yep, the Crossroads program starts the first class is on the Saturday, November the fourth. So if you're interested in your young son to be part of that program, absolutely. Go to the website and sign up. And there'll be we'll be ready to rock and roll. Be ready to rock

Unknown Speaker 24:50
and roll. All right. Well, I guess that brings our show to the end. That brings our show to the end. We'll end it a little bit early today. You've been listening to Let's talk with Lea Rhonda. I'm Lea Croft.

Unknown Speaker 25:02
I'm Rhonda Nolan. And we've had a fabulous time speaking with our guests in the audience today, Mr. DJ from Papa Licious and Miss Kasim from worldwide Las Vegas.

Unknown Speaker 25:14
