Welcome to wake up call for the soul with Bill and Wendy, I am so excited to introduce you to my new co host, Wendy. Hey, Wendy,

Wendy Frase 0:10
Hi, Bill. How are you today? I'm so excited to be here with you.

Bill Frase 0:15
Yeah, I'm excited to have you too. So I figure, since this is our first episode, maybe we should talk a little bit about ourselves and what's up with us. So one of the things that I was thinking about for myself is just that probably a lot of people don't know, is that I'm really interested in things my subjects I studied in college were sociology, philosophy, theater arts, all about people and behavior and and change, and why do people do the things they do and stuff like that? Wendy, do you want to talk a little bit about your background and just give people a sense of, kind of, maybe, where you're coming from?

Wendy Frase 0:50
Well, we met in college, and I don't know if you've told people yet, but we are also partners in life, being married for so long now, we met back in college, as you said, you were studying sociology and theater, which I tried to avoid. Both of those, I was involved in mathematics, was my major, and also a minor in French. So those kind of things, I always gravitated towards logic and reasoning and facts, where I think you were more interpreting things and liked subjective matter, and you were a deep thinker, and that attracted me to you. So I think we blended well together.

Bill Frase 1:35
One of the shows that we watched in our early years married was The X Files in the late 90s, early, 2000s with Scully and Mulder. And I always kind of identified with Mulder, except like, now, when I look back like his things, he had the poster on the wall that said, I want to believe and then it was like, Well, wasn't it on the it was on the trailer or the beginning of the thing? It says, The truth is out there. I find that interesting, because at this point in my journey, I have no interest in believing anything. If I want to, like, know the truth, I don't, and I want to know it within myself. I don't want to have someone from the outside like, oh, the truth is out there. And if you go over to this corner of the street, you're going to find it. So while I've always identified with Mulder somewhat like i in terms of those big themes. I feel like I've kind of shifted off of those, and I always kind of saw you as Scully.

Wendy Frase 2:30
Yes, I we both loved watching that show, and Scully did remind me of myself. She being a scientist and based more in facts and logic, but I had that deep yearning too to find the truth. And I consider myself always being a seeker. And one thing that was opposite with her too is her deep Catholic background. I spent a lot of time in the church, because my dad was a pastor. So fortunately for myself, though I was raised to explore and to challenge things and to learn, so that was a blessing for myself, because I did get to experience things that maybe I wouldn't have looked for or sought after.

Bill Frase 3:23
It's interesting. I mean, we've been married over 30 years here, so we obviously have a lot in common. But, I mean, we do have these, these kind of differences in approach. You know, I'm much more intuitive feeling in my own way. You You're much more rational thinking in your approach to a lot of things. So I think, I guess that's part of my hope for our conversations here on the podcast, is that we'll be able to bounce things back and forth, that, you know, I'll say something, and you won't just be like, Oh yeah, Bill, that's great. You know, wow. Might actually push back a bit. You might I feel like that's, that's part of it. That was part of the Scully molder dynamic.

Wendy Frase 4:02
Oh, that's it. That is true. I love to ask questions, and I do love to give you a hard time occasionally as well, but I am very happy that you are trying to share your story out there. You've had this blog a while back called wake up call for the soul, and then you had this podcast with Claire, and that was a wonderful opportunity to have your different perspectives too. And I know I was back there with you coming up with this. But Why wake up call for the soul? Why did you name your podcast wake up call for the soul? What appealed to you?

Bill Frase 4:40
I think one of the key things was, was that I had always kind of liked Jack Canfield's Chicken Soup for the Soul brand, but, like, I was like, well, but I want something edgier, and I wanted something too, that that had the possibility for, I'll call it multiple meanings. And. So when I was thinking about this blog that I was going to put out, and the plan was that I'm going to put out short stories, a la Peter Rollins, because we were reading a book of his, the Orthodox Heretic in late 2017 So in January of 2018 I'm trying to come up with a brand and idea what's going to be the domain name for this website. And then I thought, oh, wake up call. Oh yeah, wake up Okay, so, you know, I looked it up, found it. I could get the.com Awesome. And then. And so the idea of Wake Up Call is that we have, we have within us this aspect that I like to call the soul, the core self, the higher self. People call it different things. When I think about the soul, this deeper aspect of ourselves. And I realized that I think there's a lot of people that don't even know they have a soul, this aspect of themselves, or they think some other part of themselves is their soul. So that was part of it. And then this idea of awakening, and I think a lot of people think of things like enlightenment as being through their mind, like I am going to become enlightened and my mind is going to perceive all this stuff. And in my own journey, which goes back way before 2018 I came to discover through my practice that there are these other parts and aspects of myself soul which is one which has these abilities to perceive, to know, things that my mind doesn't have access to. So for me, the wake up call for the soul thing is the idea that I wanted to invite people to awaken this part of themselves within and part of the wake up call was to this idea of it, there's kind of two kinds of Wake Up Calls in my mind, two extremes. There's like the Oh, wake up sleepy head. Wake up call, like it's so light and, you know, and birds are singing, or whatever, and then. But there are other kinds of Wake Up Calls, like, you have cancer, your house is burned down. Awful things have happened. There was a tsunami. Take your pick. And I kind of wanted to include all of that, that gamut in it, this possibility of that there are many different kinds of Wake Up Calls. Some of them come from within. Oftentimes they come from without. And we are in a time on our planet where there's a lot of change happening. Whether people are in recognition of that or not, I'm not exactly sure. But in 2018 I felt that was the case, and things have only gotten more interesting since then. So I feel like the brand is even more applicable in 2026 than it was in 2018

Wendy Frase 7:31
Yes, I liked a lot of what you said, because I do remember way back when you were exploring different ideas for the title. And there were lots of choices out there. I don't remember what they were now, but I wasn't sure about those. But when you told me, wake up, what about wake up call for the soul? I was like, yes, that that really did appeal to me. And I like what you talked about with the soul, because we don't talk enough about the soul, and especially just for myself, growing up in the church, we didn't really talk about the soul. So that is very interesting to me to explore that more. And what I like about wake up call, because if you look up the metaphorical meaning, it says an experience that acts as a warning or brings a hidden problem to light. But that really appeals to me, because something is hidden, and there's so much to life that is hidden, and that makes me want to, as you always said, dig deep. We have to dig deep and cover or like, there's this mystery out there that shouldn't be a mystery, but we want to uncover it. What is really going on in the world, in ourselves, in our souls. There's so much to explore there.

Bill Frase 8:56
Yeah, what we've been trained to do through our upbringing in this world, through our lives, with our families, our education system, our media, even our religious teachings or backgrounds or circumstances we found ourselves in. It's this very I'll call it two dimensional, kind of way of looking at things like, it's flat, it's it's flat. And so, you know, when I think about what we're doing with the soul, I mean, it's not even just 3d it's not going from 2d to 3d the soul, in my perception, at this point, has the capability of perceiving things along multiple dimensions simultaneously. So probably already got I've gone way deeper already than I intended to go in this first conversation, but it's just something that maybe it's an invitation for people to be like, Oh, okay, so we're not just talking about this singular thing, but we're talking about a real expansion of possibility when it comes to human awareness, when it comes to what we might call human potential, or growth or development.

Wendy Frase 10:10
Yeah, I like what you said there. It reminds me. I just had this thought of this book that I read long ago, and it was called flat land. This was narrated by a square and it follows his journey after he's visited by a three dimensional sphere, and it challenges his perception of reality. And so then the story continues on, and I'm going to almost have to read it again because it's been so long, but it did make me think in a different perspective, and I think that that is your goal, or part of your goal. In this podcast, in your stories, you are trying to get us to think in a different perspective. And that's what I want, too. I think that we all need to go a little deeper.

Bill Frase 10:58
It's funny, because as soon as I said 2-D, I knew that your brain, I mean, we've been married 30 years, I knew your brain went straight to Flatland, and I was gonna bring up flat land. Like, no, I'm gonna let that over to you.

Wendy Frase 11:09
We haven't talked about flat land in like, forever. I don't even remember when.

Bill Frase 11:14
Yeah, but this is, but, no, I mean, flatland is this excellent metaphor, and even it is just scratching the surface. It's, it's this satire kind of thing, this this critique, you know, of society and, yeah, and, I mean, that's one of the things that I hope will come out in our conversations. I don't see how it can't, is, is this critique of what...I use all kinds of words for it. I'll just call it the human world right now, the world that has been invented by people, that most people think is real, that it has some independent reality, some existence that is independent of human beings, and they don't even realize that they made it up. And that's why I liked theater and sociology and philosophy, so much in undergrad and graduate school was this idea that was, I mean, it's a core concept in sociology, a socially constructed reality. And I think that when people hear that phrase, they're like, Oh, well, you're talking about, you know, norms and mores and certain institutions or whatever. And for me, that concept is much broader, like it incorporates way more of what people call reality than they do. So yeah, I do hope that what we end up here that that we're, we're pointing, we're we're trying to lead toward truth, but we're also we're, when you're doing that, you have to then have questions about, well, if these things are possible, or if these things are maybe real, then what about these other things that seem to be diametrically opposed to the things that we have been taught, that we've been led to believe, doctrines, dogmas, ideas, identities.

Wendy Frase 13:00
That's true. Those are some good points that I just want to point out too at the end here, as we're attempting to wrap up, we are both seekers, exploring, and that's what I would encourage people really to do, is not to listen to myself, because certainly I have fewer answers than I have questions, but to keep exploring and to ask questions and to listen and to dig deep,

Bill Frase 13:32
yeah, yeah. And I think the thing that I'm really looking forward to inviting people to do through this podcast is, is to because so much of what I see on social media is a more intellectual questioning, and that's, it's, it's a great place. I spend a lot of time there, even still myself. But there are these deeper places we can go, where, where we can touch on more of what is real and true for ourselves through the development of our perceptions, of the wholeness of our being, of our souls and so yeah, and that phrase dig deep very much applies, because I think I really desire to help people to go deeper than the intellect, to seek that which is more fundamental than the ideas that people have come up with.

Wendy Frase 14:29
So that's so exciting, because right I, I look forward to exploring this more with you, because that's something certainly I need help with, not being so much on an intellectual level, but being more awakened from a soul level.

Bill Frase 14:48
Yeah, I just hope that listeners will stick with us long enough to to get a sense that there's, there's some real juiciness here. There is some stuff that is, stuff that. You haven't heard before that we're going to talk about in terms of our own lives, you know, things that our own experiences, our lives, our practices and perceptions and possibilities that we are looking to invite you, dear listeners, to hopefully experience for yourselves and not to take our word for it, or, you know, not to just be like, Oh, well, they say it's so. It must be so. Now I just, I want to invite people to be open to possibilities and potentials that may not have even been on your radar before.

Wendy Frase 15:35
Didn't Scully always, or one of her lines was, the truth is out there, Mulder, you just need to know where to find it.

Bill Frase 15:42
That is from season one, episode one, yep, that's why they put the "I" in FBI. yeah and again, but that's absolutely right with this.

Wendy Frase 15:54
The truth is out there. We just need to know where to find it.

Bill Frase 15:57
Well, the truth is in here, and instead of looking out through our little brain windows for it, that we have other aspects that we can touch on that truth, that we can perceive it, that we can know it in a deeper way, where it's not a question of like, is this true or real? Where it's like, oh my gosh, like, wow, that's true for me, that's real for me. So that's the difference for me, is the place we're looking within is this deeper location of the soul, what we'll call the soul. It's wake up call for the soul. So as the soul wakes up, it's like, oh, whoa. There's all this stuff here. Amazing.

Wendy Frase 16:36
That's awesome. Well, so nice to chat with you today. Bill,

Bill Frase 16:41
yep,it's always a pleasure when, until next time, until next time,

Bill Frase 16:47
thanks so much for listening. We hope you'll join us for our next conversation in episode one, the truth is in there and I, we loved that show, skulder and Mully Scully and Mulder. Scully and Mulder probably gonna have to cut this and that it's this aspect of ourselves.

Wendy Frase 17:14
Pause, break, well,

Bill Frase 17:15
our damn burn clock.

Wendy Frase 17:20
Make the outtakes. I guess

Bill Frase 17:24
my clock is her idea. It's not mine

Wendy Frase 17:27
it's very magical,

Bill Frase 17:28
yeah, it's real magical when you're trying to do a podcast. So unprofessional. All right, so where was I?

Wendy Frase 17:40
Do you want me to start over with? Why wake up call for the soul. Okay, okay, continue.
