Ag in a Minute

Tyler, a Minnesota 4-H Agriculture Ambassador, shares key tips for successfully showing chickens in 4-H. He explains how to choose the right breed based on your goals—egg production breeds like Leghorns or ISA Browns, and meat production breeds like Cornish Crosses. Tyler also highlights the importance of healthy, uniform birds, noting that injuries, feather loss, discoloration, or mismatched pen mates can affect scoring. He closes with a fun fact: Minnesota ranked 16th in poultry production in 2024, emphasizing the state’s strong agricultural presence.

Hello, I'm Tyler and this is Agriculture in a Minute with the Minnesota 4-H Agriculture Ambassadors. Today we will discuss things to look for when showing chickens in 4-H. You want to look for a breed that fits with what you are wanting to show in, I. E. Leghorned or ISA browns for egg production, Cornish crosses for meat production, etc.

Speaker 1:

When showing poultry, you want to make sure your bird is healthy, in good shape, and your birds in your pen look the same. A couple of things that could lose you points are if any of your birds have injuries, bent, broken, or missing feathers, or your pen does not have the same size or same color animals, and if any of your birds have discolorations in the feet, shank, or beak areas. And fun fact, Minnesota was ranked sixteenth in poultry production in 2024. This was Tyler with Minnesota 4-H Agriculture Ambassadors. See you next time.
