The propers of the day according to the Roman Missal before 1955. The vigil of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, August 14 in the year of our Lord 2026. Of today's feast Dom Prosper Garage writes the following, What dawn is this that makes the brightest constellations of the sacred cycle grow pale? Lawrence, who had been shining in the August heavens as an incomparable star is well nigh eclipsed and becomes but the humble satellite of the queen of saints whose triumph is preparing beyond the clouds. Mary stayed on earth after her son's ascension in order to give birth to his church but she could not remain forever in exile Yet she was not to take her flight to heaven until this new fruit of her maternity had acquired the growth and strength which it belongs to a mother to give.
Vox Liturgica:How sweet to the Church was this dependence, a privilege given to her members by our Lord in imitation of himself. As we saw at Christmas time, the God man was first carried at the arms of his mother gathering his strength and nourishing his life at her virginal breast, so the mystical body of the man god, the holy church received in its first years the same care from Mary as the divine child our Emmanuel. As Joseph heretofore at Nazareth Peter was now ruling the house of God. But Our Lady was nonetheless to the assembly of the faithful the source of life in the spiritual order as she had been to Jesus in his humanity. On the day of Pentecost, the Holy Ghost and every one of his gifts rested first upon her in all fullness.
Vox Liturgica:Every grace bestowed on the privileged dwellers in the Cynical was given more imminently and more abundantly to her. The sacred stream of the river maketh the city of God joyful: because first of all the Most High has sanctified his own tabernacle, made her the well of living waters, which run with a strong stream from Libanus. The spouse, the church on earth, the church in heaven, all were waiting for her who had tended the vine and strengthened its roots to utter a word such as that which had heretofore brought down the spouse to earth. But today heaven not earth was to be the gainer. Flee away, oh my beloved.
Vox Liturgica:It was the voice of Mary about to follow the fragrant footsteps of the Lord, her son up to the eternal mountains whither her own perfumes had preceded her. On this day of vigil, the Holy Liturgy also remembers a holy confessor whose imprisonment and sufferings at Rome in the time of the Arians made him almost the equal of the martyrs. Eusebius, a Roman priest, was an ardent defender of the Nicene faith. When the Arian emperor Constantius permitted Pope Liberius to return to Rome reportedly after compromising the faith, Eusebius publicly preached against both Pope and Emperor as heretics. For this, he was confined in a narrow room or in his own house where he spent seven months in constant prayer until his death.
Vox Liturgica:He was buried in the cemetery of Callistus. The church of Saint Eusebius on the Escholine still marks the site of his house. In the name of the father and of the son and of the holy ghost. Amen. The introit.
Vox Liturgica:All the rich among the people shall entreat thy countenance. After her shall virgins be brought to the king. Her neighbors shall be brought to thee in gladness and rejoicing. My heart has uttered a good word. I speak of my works to the king.
Vox Liturgica:Glory be to the father and to the son and to the holy ghost as it was in the beginning is now and will be through all ages of ages. Amen. All the rich among the people shall entreat thy countenance. After her shall virgins be brought to the King. Her neighbors shall be brought to thee in gladness and rejoicing.
Vox Liturgica:The Collect, let us pray. O God, who didstain to choose for thy dwelling the virginal womb of the Blessed Mary, grant we beseech thee that defended by her protection we may assist with joy at her festival. Who liveth and reignest with God the Father in the unity of the Holy Ghost God through all ages of ages. Amen. A commemoration of Saint Eusebius.
Vox Liturgica:O God, who does gladden us by the annual feast of Blessed Eusebius, thy confessor, mercifully grant that we who celebrate his heavenly birthday may also imitate his example through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. A lesson from the wisdom of Sirach. No vine ever yielded fruit so fragrant. The enjoyment of honor and riches is the fruit I bear.
Vox Liturgica:It is I that give birth to all noble loving, all reverence, all true knowledge in the holy gift of hope. From me comes every grace of faithful observance. From me all promise of life and vigor. Hither turn your steps all you that have learned to long for me. Take your fill of the increase I yield.
Vox Liturgica:Never was honey so sweet as the influence I inspire. Never honeycomb as the gift I bring. Mine is a renowned that endures age after age. Eat of this fruit and you will yet hunger for more. Drink of this wine and your thirst for it is still unquenched.
Vox Liturgica:He who listens to me will never be disappointed. He who lives by me will do no wrong. He who reads my lesson aright will find in it life eternal. The gradual Blessed art thou and worshipful, O Virgin Mary, who without loss of maidenhood wast found to be the mother of our Savior. O Virgin Mother of God, he whom the whole world cannot hold, enclosed himself in thy womb, and was made man.
Vox Liturgica:A continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Luke. At that time, as Jesus was speaking to the crowd, a woman in the multitude said to him aloud, Blessed is the womb that bore thee, the breast which thou hast sucked. And he said, Shall we not say, Blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it? The Offeratory. Blessed art thou, O Virgin Mary, who did spare the Creator of the world.
Vox Liturgica:Thou gavest birth to him who made thee, yet remainest ever Virgin. The secret, may our offerings, O Lord, be commended to thy mercy by the prayer of the Mother of God, whom thou hast removed from this world, that she may with confidence intercede for us with thee. Through the same Jesus Christ, thy Son, our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. A commemoration of Saint Eusebius.
Vox Liturgica:We offer thee, O Lord, sacrifices of praise in memory of thy saints by whose intercession we trust to be delivered from both present and future evils through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, through all ages of ages. Amen. The common preface. Just it is indeed and fitting, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, everlasting God, through whom the angels praise thy majesty, the dominions worship it, the powers stand in awe, The heavens and the hosts of heaven together with the Blessed Seraphim joyfully do magnify. We entreat thee that thou command it be permitted us to join with them in confessing thee while we say with lowly praise.
Vox Liturgica:Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, the heavens and the earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The communion.
Vox Liturgica:Blessed is the womb of the Virgin Mary which bore the Son of the eternal Father. The post communion. Let us pray. Grant thine assistance, O merciful God, to our frailty that we who anticipate the festival of the holy Mother of God may, by the help of her intercession, rise from our iniquities through the same Jesus Christ, thy Son, our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen.
Vox Liturgica:A commemoration of Saint Eusebius, are And midst in of the of good and good and In the name of the father, and of the son, and of the holy ghost. Amen. We fly to thy patronage, oh Holy Mother of God. Despise not our petitions and our necessities, but deliver us always from all dangers. O glorious and blessed Amen.
