The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

As broadcast Sept 12 with plenty of good indie new vibes to sling around amongst friends.  Tonight we open with Phosphene, as the band dropped their 3rd career LP Transmute the Friday prior, and there's plenty more left to give a spin after that for our weekly indie exploratory committee.  Tunes from favorites like Angel Olsen, The World of Birds, Black Sea Dahu, ADOY, Nature TV, and Charli Adams dot the playlist with bright illumination, but there's plenty more all very deserving of a spin beyond that.

Part 1
Phosphene – Levitation
Holysloot – Point of No Return
Fetch Tiger – Austin Powers
Lazy Daze – All Below
The World of Birds – Cannonball
Dawn to Dawn – Seventh Floor

Facts
Phosphene – Levitation
- Old guests on the show out of PDX or Portland in Oregon, that was the band’s latest single.
- For those not familiar with what a phosphene is, it’s kind of the remnant of any bright light you were look-ing at before you closed your eyes, and when you do close your eyes, you can see red or pink ghosts of that light even with zero light coming in.
- This tune is from the band’s new album out this Friday titled Transmute, so give it a whirl if you dug our shoegazey friends right there.
Holysloot – Point of No Return
- This is a band out of Amsterdam whose profile has definitely been rising since late last year saw their debut album drop at the start of December.
- Good album too, it’s called Uncolored, so give that a shout if you liked that cut just out last week.
Fetch Tiger – Austin Powers
- This band out of Brooklyn, a Tuesday night regular here on the show, would like to remind you that the moniker is not a Mean Girls reference.
- Fetch Tiger is a duo that originally formed in London in early 2020, and started as the project of Florida-raised songwriter Lorenzo Montali, who was later joined by Texan, Tanner Davis, bringing more pop-forward influences to the sound.
Lazy Daze – All Below
- Just to disambiguate before we roll on, this would not be daze as in “the days of our lives,” but d a z e, as in unable to think properly, or in a stupefied state.
- This is a solo project out of Cincinnati now based in LA, having made debut back in 2020, and only standalone singles since in the discog, but worth a shout for sure.
The World of Birds – Cannonball
- This is a quartet out of Cape Town in SA, and their latest single to date.
- Interestingly, their 2020 album and some other earlier works were inspired by a trip to neighboring Mozambique, and that album is titled Before The Sun Comes Up if you wanna spin a little more from The World of Birds.
Dawn to Dawn – Seventh Floor
- Our final tune comes from another rather new band that made debut in 2020 and hails from Montreal.
- The trio is lead by Tess Roby, who is the band’s vocalist, and they’d like you to conjure up a late night drive through hills and forests with our final cut of tonight’s first fourth.

Part 2
Black Sea Dahu – Not a Man, Not a Woman
Bulgarian Cartrader – Guestlist
Angel Olsen – Greenville
Hojean – Cruel
Seowol – Seowol
Dust Hunny – Ashes in the Medicine Cabinet
R. Missing – How to Slow a Dream

Facts
Black Sea Dahu – Not a Man, Not a Woman
- A band that never fails to impress us here at Drop Central out of Zurich right here.
- This tune is off the band’s new EP titled Orbit, and lead vocalist Janin Catherin state that it’s the heaviest material they have ever put together emotionally-speaking, and that is available everywhere now.
Bulgarian Cartrader – Guestlist
- Something slower from one of our favorite artists out of Eastern Europe or anywhere else over the past year is back with something slower in tow.
- The music is the solo project of Daniel Stoyanov, who’s native to the Bulgarian capital city of Sofia, and we cannot recommend Stoyanov’s debut album from last year titled Motor Songs. Very good stuff.
Angel Olsen – Greenville
- And speaking of very good stuff, Angel Olsen right here with an assist from Meg Duff of Hand Habits.
- The original is a song by Lucinda Williams, which appeared on the artist’s 1998 album Car Wheels On A Gravel Road. The song is part of the Amazon series Atlas Obscura Day Tripper, which first aired back in late July.
Hojean – Cruel
- Our main Korean-American artist in ATL has had a busy docket of late, and for good reason.
- Hojean is out with a new EP later this year, on which this song will appear, but we have yet to get a title or drop date on that, so we’ll just have to play the waiting game.
Seowol – Seowol
- This is a local Korean band who we had to give a shout to on this tune.
- And that is because the quartet just released their debut album A Spacetime Odyssey last Monday, so go give some love if you like what’s on the way.
Dust Hunny – Ashes in the Medicine Cabinet
- (disamb. sp.) This is the solo project of Ivory Jane Snow, and Dust Hunny was started as a side projet of the alt rock band Snow is part of called Sungaze.
- This song is part of an upcoming double EP due out next year in the spring.
R. Missing – How to Slow a Dream
- Fast becoming a regular here on Tuesday nights, the Brooklyn-based collab band of Toppy and Sharon Shy just dropped this standalone single right on the back of another just weeks prior.
- This is the band’s 13th original song of the year, and we’d previously played Take Your Pleasure Sadly, so certainly an interesting project to keep tabs on.

Part 3
ADOY – In Love
Goofy Geese – Bam Bam
Suck Face – Just The Other Day
junodream – Death Drive
LITE – Crushing
Split System – Alone Again
L’Rain – Pet Rock

Facts
ADOY – In Love
- Korea’s very own Oh Joo-hwan and company are back with this very smooth cut which we commence the 3rd stanza of our radiological orchestra tonight with. In Love appears on the band’s latest album titled Pleasures, so go and check it out.
- The continually on the rise band have been getting some exposure abroad this year as well, with a tour of Europe which is always a big thing for any group.
Goofy Geese – Bam Bam
- One of the more recent arrivals in the Bergen Sound scene of Norway, an ever-expansive and famous indie nexus in that country.
- Just a standalone for now, but you can check out the band’s EP from last year called Bouquet if you wanna get more of a taste.
Suck Face – Just The Other Day
- Obviously, this is our moniker of the week, hands down.
- This latest tune from the band, which is a budding bedroom project out of Nashville.
junodream – Death Drive
- This is a UK-based quintet, a band of high school friends that came together from their love of spacey bands like Pink Floyd, AIR, and Spiritualized.
- Try out their 2021 EP Travel Guide for more.
LITE – Crushing
- For those unaware, this is a post-rock math band out of Tokyo, and this instrumental joint is their latest.
- A very veteran band, they have in the 16 years together released five albums and six EP’s, and have proven popular beyond Japan, touring tirelessly all over the world.
Split System – Alone Again
- Interesting band right here to go full punk & end the next block.
- The band states that they cover all things punk, from proto to post, in their sound.
L’Rain – Pet Rock
- This is from an album titled I Killed Your Dog, which is rather unfortunate.
- Despite the title, this song certainly goes places all over the map in the process of play, and the band is Taja Cheek’s experimental project, eschewing song structure for something freer.

Part 4
Charli Adams – how do u know how to love me
Carla Geneve – Euthymia
Nature TV – Frida
La Force – how do you love a man
Soccer Mommy – I’m Only Me When I’m With You
Ben Jansz – Divine
Secret B – She Loves

Facts
Charli Adams – how do u know how to love me
- This is an artist we’ve been paying attention to for several years now who hails from Nashville.
- The past weekend saw Adams release a new EP titled nothing to be afraid of, which is available every-where now, so give that mini record a whirl if you liked that first cut of part 4.
Carla Geneve – Euthymia
- For those unaware of the meaning of this title, it simply means a normative, peaceful state of mind.
- This would be the latest single from the Aussie artist’s upcoming album titled Hertz (as in note sp., like the car rental co), and that is out in full on Oct 27.
Nature TV – Frida
- One of our favorite Brighton exports at the moment, this latest tune is an extra smooth joint that features on the band’s Mid Flight EP.
- The mini record will drop later this year, with three tracks already out so far.
La Force – how do you love a man
- If not so initiated, this is the project of Ariel Engle, who’s mostly a known commodity through the band Broken Social Scene.
- The single is the latest teaser to Engle’s upcoming album titled XO SKELETON (note sp.), due out Sept 29.
Soccer Mommy – I’m Only Me When I’m With You
- A cover of this Taylor Swift original by t/n Sophia Allison, and this is taken from an upcoming EP also due out on the 29th.
- The new EP is called Karaoke Night and also features covers of Sheryl Crow, Slowdive, R.E.M. and Pavement originals.
Ben Jansz – Divine
- A new tune from the Western Aus native, a very talented artist who was one of the finalists to last year’s inaugural Buskers World Cup held here in Gwangju.
- Just a standalone for now, but thankfully we have the 2nd edition of the Buskers World Cup coming up next month, starting on October 3 and running through the 9th.
Secret B – She Loves
- To finish tonight, a bit of a mystery as to where this solo project is from or who’s behind it, but a lovely tune we really liked upon release last week.
- As we usually do, lacking any deeper information on this, we’ll let the tune speak for itself.
