Lighter Than You Started is a daily podcast offering gentle reflections on the news, the noise, and the small human moments that shape our days. With wry humour and quiet honesty, it’s not about fixing you, just about ending each day feeling a little lighter than when it began.
Hi I'm Keith and welcome to Lighter Than You Started. It's Saturday and today I'd like to explore a habit that's so common we rarely notice we're doing it. The habit of trying to improve every moment. Perhaps you're sitting with a cup of coffee and your mind starts thinking about what you should be doing next. Perhaps you're out for a walk and you begin wondering whether you should be walking faster perhaps you're reading a book and suddenly you remember something you forgot to do Or perhaps you're simply sitting quietly and almost immediately your mind suggests you ought to be using the time more wisely.
Keith:There's something very understandable about that. We live in a world that celebrates optimisation. Better. Faster. More efficient.
Keith:More productive. We're constantly encouraged to improve ourselves our work our homes our health our routines even our relaxation. And while there's nothing wrong with wanting to grow sometimes we quietly lose something along the way. We lose the ability to simply experience a moment without asking it to become something else. Saturday often gives us opportunities for moments like these.
Keith:A slower breakfast a conversation without looking at the clock a quiet afternoon a trip into town, an hour with no particular plan. Yet it's remarkable how quickly we can start editing those moments. I should really be getting on with something. I could be using this time better. I'll relax properly once everything else is done.
Keith:But perhaps this moment isn't asking to be improved. Perhaps it's just asking to be noticed. Think about some of your happiest memories. Many of them probably weren't extraordinary. They weren't perfectly planned.
Keith:They weren't highly productive. They weren't carefully optimized. They were simply the moments you were fully present for. A conversation that lasted longer than expected. Watching the rain from a window.
Keith:Peering at a rainbow from a window wondering what really sits at the end. Walking beside someone you care about they mattered because you were there. Nobody did you improve them. There's something beautifully freeing about allowing an ordinary moment to simply remain ordinary. Not rushing it.
Keith:Not measuring it. Not asking any more of it than it's already offering. Because ordinary moments have a quiet way of becoming extraordinary when we give them our attention. You don't need to improve this moment. You don't need to make it more productive, more meaningful, more efficient.
Keith:You don't need to turn it into something it isn't. Perhaps this moment is already enough exactly as it is. So if today you notice yourself trying to optimize another quiet Saturday perhaps gently pause look around take a deep slow breath and ask yourself what if this moment doesn't need improving? What if it simply needs experiencing? Today's talk for you.
Keith:You don't need to improve this moment. Thank you for sharing this moment with me and as always I hope you end today feeling lighter than you started. Go gently and I'll see you tomorrow on the flip side. Lighter Than You Started is a think of something publishing production.
